This detailed crochet pattern recreates the distinguished beagle botanist shown in the reference image. The finished character features an oversized beagle head, long brown ears, a white facial blaze, glossy eyes, a silver-gray monocle, a striped bow tie, a textured olive tweed field suit, brown lace-up shoes, a library satchel, a miniature explorer hat, a bird field guide, and a tiny dogwood flower booklet.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern uses US crochet terminology. Most character pieces are worked in continuous spiral rounds unless the instructions specifically say to turn or join. Use a stitch marker to identify the first stitch of every round.
The finished beagle measures approximately 17 to 18 inches tall when made with medium-weight yarn and a 3.25 mm crochet hook. The large head, short body, oversized shoes, and long ears create the same charming proportions visible in the image.
Materials
- Medium-weight yarn: approximately 250 yards warm chestnut brown for the head, ears, shoes, and satchel.
- Medium-weight yarn: approximately 180 yards dark olive tweed or olive-brown marled yarn for the jacket, trousers, and sleeves.
- Medium-weight yarn: approximately 90 yards creamy white for the blaze, muzzle, paws, shirt, and eye patch.
- Small amounts: taupe, light gray, charcoal, black, rust, muted red, teal, sage green, beige, pale blue, and off-white.
- 3.25 mm crochet hook for the main character.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for small accessories and book details.
- One pair of 30 to 32 mm glossy black safety eyes.
- One 24 to 28 mm black safety nose, or black yarn for a crocheted nose.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle and fine embroidery needle.
- Stitch markers and straight pins.
- Four small brown buttons measuring approximately 8 to 10 mm.
- Thin silver-gray embroidery thread for the monocle and satchel buckle.
- Beige embroidery thread for the shoe laces and decorative topstitching.
- Red embroidery thread for freckles and mouth details.
- Small pieces of white or cream felt for the name badge and book labels.
- Fabric-safe fine-tip pen for miniature lettering.
- Thin plastic canvas or firm craft felt for reinforcing the satchel, hat brim, and miniature books.
- Optional fabric glue for securing tiny labels after stitching.
Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring.
- ch: chain.
- sl st: slip stitch.
- sc: single crochet.
- hdc: half double crochet.
- dc: double crochet.
- inc: work 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch.
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease over the next 2 stitches.
- BLO: back loop only.
- FLO: front loop only.
- FO: fasten off.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
Gauge: 22 single crochet stitches and 23 rounds should measure approximately 4 inches. Exact gauge is less important than producing a dense fabric that does not reveal the stuffing.
- Overall height from shoes to top of head: approximately 17 to 18 inches.
- Head width excluding ears: approximately 7 inches.
- Each ear: approximately 6 inches long and 3 inches wide.
- Torso length: approximately 5 inches.
- Leg length including shoes: approximately 6 inches.
- Satchel body: approximately 3.5 inches wide and 3 inches tall.
- Explorer hat brim: approximately 5 inches across.
- Miniature books: approximately 1.5 inches tall.
Important Construction Notes
Stuff the head firmly enough to preserve its rounded shape, but do not overstuff the muzzle, ears, or clothing details. The ears should remain soft and flexible. The body should be firm at the neck because the oversized head requires stable support.
The facial blaze, muzzle, eye patch, and monocle ring are made separately and sewn onto the finished head. Pin every facial element in place before sewing. Small changes in eye spacing can significantly alter the expression.
Use a dark olive tweed yarn when possible. A marled or heathered yarn containing brown, tan, gray, and muted green flecks gives the jacket and trousers the textured field-suit appearance shown in the image.
Large Brown Head
Main Head Shape
Use chestnut brown yarn and the 3.25 mm hook. Work continuously and place the beginning of each round at the center back of the head.

- Position the shirt insert, lapels, collar, pockets, buttons, and bow tie before attaching the head.
- Center the head over the neck opening and sew around the full 30-stitch neck circumference twice.
- Reinforce the back of the neck with several hidden vertical stitches between the head and upper torso.
- Confirm that both ears hang evenly and reach approximately to the bottom of the muzzle.
- Check that the eyes are level and that the white eye patch remains visible around the left eye.
- Secure the monocle ring and cord without pulling the right eye inward.
- Add the nose, mouth, red freckles, and small lower-lip stitch.
- Place the satchel strap diagonally across the chest and secure it at the shoulder.
- Arrange the miniature hat and books beside the finished character for the complete display.
For the seated pose shown in the image, gently bend the legs forward at the upper seam and place the beagle on the edge of a shelf or bench. The shoes should hang freely while the torso remains upright.
Care Notes
- Spot-clean the character with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Do not soak the felt labels, printed book titles, safety eyes, or reinforced satchel.
- Reshape the ears, hat brim, bow tie, and jacket lapels while damp.
- Allow the entire piece to air-dry naturally away from direct heat.
- Store the miniature books separately when transporting the character.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Remove loose dust with a soft makeup brush or clean microfiber cloth. Support the ears and accessories while brushing so the stitches are not stretched.
For a small stain, dampen a white cloth with cool water and mild soap. Press the cloth against the stained area without rubbing. Blot with a second damp cloth and then with a dry towel.
Do not machine-wash the completed display because the reinforced books, felt labels, hat brim, safety eyes, and satchel structure may become damaged or distorted.
Keep the beagle away from prolonged direct sunlight, which may fade the dark olive tweed, brown ears, red embroidery, and printed labels. Display it in a dry location with good air circulation.
For long-term storage, wrap the figure loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Place the hat and books in a separate small box so they do not press against the face, ears, monocle, or bow tie.
Before redisplaying the character, gently reshape the ears, lapels, shoes, and hat brim by hand. Fluff compressed areas with light fingertip pressure rather than pulling directly on the crocheted stitches.
