Crochet Tutorial: Garden Duck in Chevron Vest with Oversized Glasses and Mushroom Sun Hat – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful garden duck features a softly shaped cream body, long seated legs, an orange bill, oversized mint glasses, purple flower decorations, an embroidered chevron vest, olive shorts, floral sandals, and a mushroom crossbody bag. The coordinating coral sun hat, tiny striped bee, caterpillar, and miniature open book complete the detailed garden-inspired display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction

Using the suggested yarn and hook sizes, the seated duck measures approximately 20 to 22 inches tall from the top hair tuft to the bottom of the sandals. The head measures about 7 inches wide, while the removable sun hat measures approximately 8 inches across the brim.

The duck is constructed from separate crocheted components. The head, neck, body, arms, legs, bill, clothing, glasses, sandals, bag, hat, bee, caterpillar, flowers, and book are completed individually and assembled at the end.

Insert the safety eyes between Rounds 20 and 21. Position them 13 visible stitches apart. The oversized glasses will surround the eyes, but accurate eye spacing remains important.

Add enough stuffing to create a smooth oval head. Do not close the opening. Leave a long yarn tail for attaching the neck.

Cheek Shaping

Thread a long strand of cream yarn through the head. Enter behind the future left glasses frame, pass beneath the stuffing, and exit beside the left lower cheek. Reinsert one stitch away and return to the starting point.

Pull gently to round the cheek. Repeat on the right side. Make only a subtle indentation so the face remains soft and wide rather than sharply sculpted.

Using orange yarn, sc through both layers along the sides and front edge. Leave the straight back edge open. Add a very thin layer of stuffing, keeping the bill flat.

Sew the bill between Head Rounds 22 and 28. Center it directly beneath the eyes. The upper edge should sit approximately two rounds below the eyes.

Embroider two small nostrils on the upper bill with dark orange or brown yarn. Place them four stitches apart.

Eyebrows and Eye Highlights

Use one strand of black yarn to embroider gently arched eyebrows above the eyes. Position each eyebrow between Head Rounds 17 and 18.

The inner eyebrow ends should sit slightly higher than the outer ends, creating the curious expression visible in the finished duck.

Add one tiny white yarn highlight to the upper outer portion of each black safety eye. Secure all yarn ends inside the head.

  1. Row 1: Ch 16. Beginning in the second ch, sc across. Ch 1 and turn. 15 stitches.
  2. Rows 2 to 8: Sc across. Ch 1 and turn. 15 stitches.

FO. Stack the two page rectangles on the cover. Fold all layers in half and sew down the center fold.

Open the book and tack the outer page corners to the cover. Embroider several short brown lines on the pages to represent writing.

Place the caterpillar across the open pages and sew two body segments to the book so it remains in position.

Optional Small Green Waist Button Detail

To reproduce the small decorative side accents visible near the shorts and sandals, make two additional 12-stitch green circles following the sandal button instructions.

Sew them to the outer thigh area of the shorts. Add four small brown stitches to each circle to create the appearance of sewn wooden buttons.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Pull the finished shorts over the lower body and center the waistband.
  2. Pull the vest over the upper body with the chevron pattern centered at the front.
  3. Sew the neck to the 24-stitch opening at the top of the body.
  4. Sew the head opening to the top of the neck with cream yarn.
  5. Check that the bill points directly forward before tightening the final head stitches.
  6. Sew the arms beneath the vest armholes between Body Rounds 27 and 31.
  7. Angle the arms downward approximately 35 degrees.
  8. Sew the flattened thigh edges to the lower front of the body.
  9. Position the legs approximately 2 inches apart.
  10. Angle the thighs forward so the duck remains naturally seated.
  11. Secure each thigh to the shorts with several hidden olive stitches.
  12. Attach the sandals to the feet with dark beige yarn.
  13. Sew the bag strap diagonally across the vest.
  14. Tack the bag body to the left hip with two hidden stitches.
  15. Sew the glasses securely around the eyes.
  16. Add the two purple glasses flowers.
  17. Attach the bee beside the top feather tuft.
  18. Place the finished hat, caterpillar, and book beside the seated duck.

After assembly, inspect the face from the front, both sides, and above. Adjust the glasses so each eye sits near the center of its frame.

The eyebrows should remain visible above the frames. The bill must remain centered beneath the bridge and should project forward without drooping.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For routine care, remove loose dust with a soft clean brush. Brush in the direction of the crochet stitches and use very light pressure around the glasses flowers, bee wings, mushroom spots, and caterpillar antennae.

For spot cleaning, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Blot the affected area without rubbing. Use a second damp cloth to remove soap residue.

When deeper cleaning is necessary, remove the hat, book, and unattached accessories. Hand wash the main doll briefly in cool water. Do not twist, wring, or stretch the fabric.

Press the duck gently between clean towels to remove moisture. Reshape the head, cheeks, bill, neck, arms, legs, vest, shorts, and sandals while damp.

Allow every piece to air dry completely on a flat towel. Keep the project away from direct heat, tumble dryers, hair dryers, and strong sunlight.

Store the duck in a dry, ventilated space. Place acid-free tissue around the glasses and hat brim when storing for long periods so the crocheted shapes remain smooth and correctly positioned.
