Crochet Tutorial: Summer Chick in Striped Overalls with Watermelon Bag and Flower Sandals – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful summer chick features a plump yellow body, oversized white eyes, an orange beak, rosy cheeks, a red comb, and a playful fried-egg headpiece. The chick wears yellow-and-white striped overalls with turquoise trim, a matching turquoise scarf, flower-decorated sandals, a watermelon-shaped bag, and a small floral satchel. A miniature picnic basket and striped bee complete the sunny garden scene.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using the recommended yarn and hook, the finished chick measures approximately 14 to 15 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the comb. The widest part of the head measures approximately 7 inches. Finished dimensions may vary depending on yarn thickness, hook size, stuffing, and personal tension.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. The main shapes use single crochet, increases, decreases, color changes, simple embroidery, and basic sewing. Take time to count every round carefully and use stitch markers to keep the shaping symmetrical.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Exact gauge is less important than producing a firm fabric that does not allow stuffing to show. A useful approximate gauge is 6 single crochet stitches and 6 rounds per inch. Use a smaller hook if your stitches look loose or if gaps appear after stuffing.

Work in continuous spiral rounds unless the instructions specifically say to join or turn. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. Stuff gradually, adding small pieces of fiberfill to prevent lumps and uneven areas.

Color changes should be made on the final yarn-over of the stitch before the new color begins. Leave short yarn tails inside the garment or weave them securely along the wrong side. Do not carry dark yarn behind white areas where it may show through.

Chick Head

Use chick yellow yarn. The head is a large rounded shape with a gently narrowed lower section. Keep the top firmly stuffed, but avoid overstuffing the lower face because the eye whites and beak need to sit against a smooth surface.

Stuff the head firmly and evenly. Shape it into a broad dome with a flatter facial area. Leave a long yarn tail for sewing the head to the body. The final opening contains 36 stitches and should remain open.

White Eye Pieces

Make two identical eye whites using white yarn. These pieces are slightly oval rather than perfectly round. Insert each safety eye before attaching the eye whites to the head.

  1. Foundation: Ch 5.
  2. R1: Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 3 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain, sc in the next 2 ch, inc in the final ch. (10)
  3. R2: Inc in the next st, sc in the next 2 sts, inc in each of the next 3 sts, sc in the next 2 sts, inc in each of the final 2 sts. (16)
  4. R3: Repeat 1 sc, inc once, sc in the next 2 sts, repeat 1 sc, inc three times, sc in the next 2 sts, repeat 1 sc, inc twice. (22)

FO and leave a long tail. Insert a 10 mm safety eye through each white oval, positioning it slightly below and inward from the center. Secure the washers only after checking that both pupils face forward evenly.

Place the eye whites side by side over head R17-R22. Allow their inner edges to touch slightly. The safety-eye centers should be approximately 5 stitches apart. Sew the white pieces around their outer edges without flattening the raised oval texture.

Orange Beak

Use orange yarn. The beak is a softly stuffed oval with a visible horizontal mouth line.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc in an MR. (6)
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)
  4. R4-R5: Sc in each st around. (18)
  5. R6: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. (12)

Add a small amount of stuffing. Flatten the opening horizontally and sew through both layers with 6 sc. FO and leave a long tail.

Position the beak directly beneath the eyes, covering approximately head R21-R24. Sew the back edge securely to the face. Use orange yarn to make one horizontal straight stitch across the center of the beak, forming the separation between the upper and lower sections.

Rosy Cheeks

Use soft pink yarn. On each side of the beak, make five short horizontal satin stitches between head R22 and R24. Each cheek should cover approximately 3 stitches in width. Keep the pink stitches light and slightly uneven to imitate the softly blended cheek color in the image.

Red Comb

Make two matching panels using red yarn. The comb is a tall, narrow, softly padded piece positioned vertically at the center of the head.

  1. Row 1: Ch 10. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc across. (9)
  2. Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (9)
  3. Row 5: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc in the next 5 sts, dec. (7)
  4. Row 6: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc in the next 3 sts, dec. (5)
  5. Row 7: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc in the next st, dec. (3)
  6. Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (3)

FO the first panel. Do not fasten off the second panel. Place both panels together and sc evenly around the sides and rounded top. Add a very small amount of stuffing before closing the lower edge.

Using a darker red strand, embroider three short curved vertical lines on the front of the comb. Sew the comb over the center of head R1-R6, leaning it back by approximately 10 degrees.

Fried-Egg Headpiece

White Egg Base

Use white yarn. The final round intentionally mixes stitch heights to create the soft, irregular fried-egg edge shown in the image.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc in an MR. (6)
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)
  4. R4: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. (24)
  5. R5: Repeat sc, hdc, 2 dc in one st, hdc, sc, sl st four times around.

FO and weave in the yarn tail. Gently block the white base with the raised and lowered sections forming an uneven edge.

Egg Yolk

Use flower yellow yarn.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc in an MR. (6)
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)
  4. R4: Sc in each st around. (18)
  5. R5: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. (12)

Add a small amount of stuffing. Sew the yolk onto the center of the white base. Place the completed egg on the upper right side of the chick’s head, partially behind and beside the comb. Sew it over approximately head R4-R10 at a slight diagonal.

  7. R18: Repeat 3 sc, dec three times. (12)
  8. R19-R21: Sc in each st around. (12)

Add light stuffing to the lower two-thirds. Flatten the final opening and sc through both layers with 6 sc. FO and leave a long tail.

Pin each arm to body R7-R10. Angle the arms approximately 35 degrees downward and slightly toward the center front. The lower ends should meet near the watermelon bag. Sew the upper flattened edge and the inner upper side to prevent the arms from turning outward.

Orange Legs

Make two using orange yarn.

  1. R1: Work 8 sc in an MR. (8)
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. (16)
  3. R3-R12: Sc in each st around. (16)

Stuff each leg firmly enough to support the doll while keeping the tubes straight. Flatten the top opening and sew through both layers with 8 sc. FO and leave a long tail.

  9. R9: Sc in each st around. (16)

Stuff the toe and center firmly. Insert the lower end of one leg into the 16-stitch foot opening and sew the pieces together stitch by stitch. Repeat for the second leg.

Sew the tops of the legs beneath the body, placing them approximately 8 stitches apart. Angle each leg forward by about 5 degrees so the sandals remain visible when the chick is seated or displayed near the edge of a shelf.

Striped Overall Shorts

The striped lower garment is constructed from two separate trouser legs joined at the crotch. Join each round with a slip stitch and begin the next round with ch 1. The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

First Trouser Leg

  1. R1 with turquoise: Ch 30, join, ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to the first sc. (30)

FO and weave in all ends. Slide the shorts over the feet and legs, then pull them over the lower body. Position the turquoise waistband around body R10-R11. Secure the waistband to the body with small hidden stitches.

Arrange the two trouser-leg openings evenly around the orange legs. Sew the inner crotch chains together neatly if a small gap remains. The turquoise lower cuffs should sit above the orange ankles and form a rounded opening around each leg.

Front Overall Bib

Use chick yellow yarn.

  1. Row 1: Ch 25. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc across. (24)
  2. Rows 2-10: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (24)

Change to turquoise. Sc evenly down the first side, across the bottom edge, and up the second side. Do not work turquoise across the top edge. FO and leave a long tail.

Using white yarn, join at the upper right corner. Work the following across the top edge: sl st in the first st, 3 hdc in the next st, sl st in the next st. Repeat this sequence 8 times to create a small scalloped white trim.

Position the bib at the center front, beginning immediately above the turquoise waistband. Sew the bottom and side edges to the body. Leave the scalloped top edge free so it remains slightly raised.

Turquoise Overall Straps

Make two. Ch 46 with turquoise yarn. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sl st in each ch across. FO and leave long tails at both ends.

Sew one end of each strap to the upper corners of the bib. Take the straps over the shoulders, cross them at the upper back, and sew the opposite ends to the back waistband. Keep both straps flat and evenly tensioned.

  2. Rows 2-6: Ch 2, turn, BLO hdc across. (80)

FO and weave in the ends. Wrap the scarf around the base of the head, covering the head-to-body seam. Cross the ends on the left side and secure the overlap with several hidden stitches.

Allow one scarf end to extend almost horizontally and the second end to hang diagonally downward. Curve the longer end slightly by sewing its underside to the scarf for approximately 1 inch.

Flower Sandals

Yellow Outer Soles

Make four identical pieces using yellow yarn. Two pieces are used for each sandal.

  1. Foundation: Ch 8.

Sc through both layers around the entire sole. Before closing, insert the plastic canvas if used. FO and weave in the ends.

White Insoles

Make two with white yarn by repeating R1 and R2 of the yellow sole. FO after R2. Sew one white insole onto the upper surface of each yellow sole, centering it so a yellow border remains visible.

Yellow Toe Bands

Make two. Ch 18 with yellow yarn. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, hdc across. (17)

FO and leave long tails. Place each band over the top of an orange foot, approximately 1 inch behind the toes. Sew the ends securely to the sides of the yellow sole.

Yellow Back Straps

Add a yellow French knot to the center. Sew one flower to the outer edge of each toe band. Place the flowers on opposite sides so both are visible from the front.

Watermelon Bag

The watermelon bag consists of two matching semicircular panels. Work in turned rows without joining. The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

First Watermelon Panel

  1. Row 1 with red: Work 6 hdc in an MR. Tighten the ring and turn. (6)
  2. Row 2 with red: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st across, turn. (12)

FO. Make a second matching panel. Using black embroidery thread, sew five elongated seed stitches across the red section of the front panel. Place two seeds near the upper area and three seeds in a lower curved row.

Place both panels together with the embroidered sides facing outward. Using dark green yarn, sc through both layers around the curved rind edge only. Leave the straight red edge open while working the seam.

Join red yarn at one upper corner and sc through both panels across the straight edge to close the top. FO and weave in all tails.

Watermelon Bag Strap

With turquoise yarn, ch 96. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sl st across. (95)

Sew one end to each top corner of the watermelon. Place the strap over the chick’s right shoulder so the watermelon rests at the center front, directly beneath the arms. Add one hidden stitch under each arm to keep the bag in position.

Satchel Strap

With turquoise yarn, ch 102. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sl st across. (101)

Sew the ends to opposite upper corners of the satchel. Arrange the strap diagonally across the chick’s body so the satchel hangs at the lower right side.

Satchel Flower

Using turquoise yarn, work 5 sc in an MR. In each stitch, work ch 2, 2 hdc, ch 2, and sl st in the same stitch. Add a yellow French-knot center. Sew the flower to the lower center of the satchel flap.

For the small pink item, work 6 sc in an MR using pink yarn. Work one round of 6 sc, stuff lightly, and close. Place it in the center of the white cloth.

Miniature Striped Bee

Bee Body

Begin with yellow yarn. Stuff the bee as the decrease rounds are completed.

  1. R1 with yellow: Work 6 sc in an MR. (6)
  2. R2 with yellow: Inc around. (12)
  3. R3 with yellow: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)

  10. R10 with yellow: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. (12)
  11. R11 with yellow: Dec around. (6)

FO and close the opening. Insert 6 mm safety eyes between R2 and R3 before the body is closed, spacing them approximately 3 stitches apart. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes with black yarn instead.

Bee Wings

Make two with white yarn.

  1. Foundation: Ch 5.
  2. R1: Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 3 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, sc in the next 2 sts along the opposite side, inc in the final ch. (10)
  3. R2: Sc in each st around. (10)

FO and flatten each wing. Sew the narrow ends side by side to the upper center of the bee body, positioning them across the first black stripe.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Confirm that the head is centered above the body and that the beak points straight forward.
  2. Secure the scarf around the neck without pulling it tightly enough to distort the head.
  3. Position the overalls waistband evenly around the body and keep the striped trouser legs symmetrical.
  4. Check that both overall straps lie flat and cross neatly at the back.
  5. Place the arms over the watermelon bag, with the lower rounded ends touching the upper red section.
  6. Arrange the yellow floral satchel at the chick’s lower right side without covering the striped overalls.
  7. Check that the orange legs are equal in length and that both sandals face forward.
  8. Sew the comb upright and place the fried-egg headpiece slightly to the chick’s right.
  9. Hide all visible yarn ends inside the doll or beneath attached accessories.

To emphasize the expression, use a short strand of dark brown or black embroidery thread to make one tiny curved eyebrow above the outer upper edge of each eye. Keep the eyebrows very thin and place them approximately one stitch above the white eye pieces.

Gently shape the finished chick with your hands. Press inward beneath the cheeks, round the sides of the head, and distribute the body stuffing so the overalls remain smooth and evenly filled.

Care Notes

Keep the finished chick away from direct sunlight for long periods because strong light may fade yellow, turquoise, and red yarn. Display the miniature basket and bee separately when the toy is handled by young children.

Safety eyes, small flowers, and miniature accessories may present a choking hazard. For a toy intended for a child under three years old, embroider all facial details and omit detachable decorations.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For light cleaning, remove loose dust with a clean, soft brush or a lint roller used with very gentle pressure. Spot-clean small marks using cool water and a tiny amount of mild liquid soap.

Blot the damp area with a clean towel. Do not rub aggressively because rubbing can create fuzz and distort embroidered details. Avoid bleach, strong detergents, fabric softener, and hot water.

For a deeper wash, place the chick inside a mesh laundry bag and hand-wash it in cool water. Support the head, body, and accessories while lifting the toy from the water.

Press excess water out gently between two towels. Do not twist or wring the crochet fabric. Reshape the head, body, arms, sandals, scarf, bags, comb, and egg headpiece while the fibers are still damp.

Air-dry the chick flat in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Turn it occasionally so the lower body and back dry completely. Do not place the toy in a tumble dryer or directly on a heater.

Store the finished piece in a dry location with enough room to prevent the comb, scarf, straps, and flower decorations from being crushed. A breathable fabric storage bag is preferable to an airtight plastic container for long-term preservation.
