This detailed playset recreates a tall hollow tree stump home with open rooms, rounded balconies, curved stairs, side branches, leafy tips, a perched owl, a badger gardener, a squirrel with a basket, a carrot patch, benches, mushrooms, flowers, a blue pond, a stream, and a small arched bridge. The design is worked in sturdy amigurumi-style pieces and assembled onto a green base mat.
Pattern Overview
This project is designed as a decorative woodland scene with many separate small parts. The main tree is a cylindrical stump with a hollow front opening and three visible interior levels. The outside has textured bark ribs, roots at the bottom, branches on both sides, and leafy clusters.
The instructions use US crochet terms. Work tightly so the tree keeps its shape. For the main structure, use two strands of worsted yarn held together or one bulky yarn. For the small animals and accessories, use one strand of worsted yarn unless noted.
Finished Size
- Base mat: about 21 in wide and 16 in deep.
- Main tree stump: about 12 in tall and 6 in wide.
- Owl: about 3.5 in tall.
- Badger: about 4 in tall.
- Squirrel: about 4.5 in tall, not including tail curve.
- Pond: about 5.5 in wide.
Skill Level
Intermediate to advanced beginner. Most pieces use basic amigurumi rounds, but the project has many parts. Beginners can still make it by working one section at a time and checking stitch counts carefully.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in bark brown, dark brown, tan, beige, cream, green, dark green, leaf green, blue, light blue, white, black, gray, orange, rust orange, red, pink, yellow, purple, teal, and small accent colors.
- Bulky yarn or two strands of worsted yarn for the tree stump and sturdy branches.
- 3.5 mm crochet hook for most amigurumi pieces.
- 4.5 mm crochet hook for the tree stump if using two strands.
- 2.75 mm crochet hook for tiny details such as carrots, mushrooms, flowers, and railing posts.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Cardboard, plastic canvas, or foam sheet for tree floors and base support.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Small black safety eyes or black embroidery thread.
- Optional: fabric glue for securing tiny interior props, though sewing is recommended for durability.

Important Construction Notes
- Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
- Stuff the animals firmly, but do not overstuff tiny limbs.
- For the hollow tree, insert plastic canvas or firm cardboard between double-layer floors so the rooms stay flat.
- The tree opening faces forward. The branches should extend left and right at slightly upward angles, matching the display image.
- Small props may be sewn into place for a display piece. For a child-safe version, avoid tiny detachable parts and replace safety eyes with embroidery.
Green Woodland Base Mat
The base mat is an oval-rectangle shape with rounded corners and an uneven garden outline. It supports the tree, pond, stream, animals, benches, mushrooms, and vegetable patch. Use green yarn and a 4.5 mm hook for a firm but flexible mat.

- Place grass tufts mostly near the pond, mushrooms, and tree roots.
Main Hollow Tree Stump
The stump is built as a sturdy open-front cylinder. The back and sides are crocheted as one bark wall, while the front has a large vertical opening. Three floor discs are added inside. The top is a flat bark cap with a slightly wider rim.

Sew the cushions into the lower room along the back wall. Add one tiny cream basket beside them using the small basket method from the squirrel section, but stop after R4.
Small Ladder and Side Details
A simple ladder is visible inside the upper room and small bark details appear on the tree exterior. These tiny pieces help the stump look full and handmade.
Interior Ladder

Tree Swing-Like Hanging Vine
A long vine curves from the left side of the trunk toward the lower area, similar to the rope-like strand visible beside the staircase.
- With dark brown yarn, ch 70.
- R1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and across. FO.
- Make 3 small leaves using the leaf pattern.
- Sew the vine starting near the left branch base and curve it downward beside the staircase.

Tree House Exterior Texture
After the structural pieces are sewn, add texture. This step makes the tree look like the ridged stump in the image instead of a plain cylinder.
- Use dark brown yarn to surface slip stitch 8 vertical lines from the top cap to the bottom ring.
- Keep some lines straight and some slightly wavy.
- Use tan yarn to add 4 shorter highlight lines on the front bark edges.
- Use dark brown embroidery to outline the three floor edges visible in the opening.
- Use bark brown yarn to sew any open gaps between the floor discs and the inside wall.
Assembly Order
Because this design has many pieces, assemble it in a fixed order. This keeps the large tree centered and prevents small props from getting in the way while sewing.
- Sew the green base mat flat and block it lightly if needed.
- Build the tree wall, top cap, bottom ring, and interior floors.
- Sew the tree to the center back of the base mat, leaving enough space for pond and stream in front.
- Attach roots around the lower trunk and sew root tips to the mat.
- Add branches, forks, and leaf clusters.
- Attach the staircase to the left front side of the trunk.
- Sew the middle balcony rail and right side basket balcony.
- Add windows, interior furniture, ladder, and wall details.
- Sew the owl onto the left branch.
- Sew the pond and stream to the front of the mat.
- Add bridge, benches, mushrooms, flowers, pebbles, and grass tufts.
- Sew the carrot patch to the left side.
- Assemble and attach the badger and squirrel last so they face the scene naturally.
Placement Guide
- Main tree: centered slightly toward the back of the mat.
- Opening: faces forward so all three rooms are visible.
- Left branch: extends to the left at about 8.5 in high with the owl sitting near the outer third.
- Right upper branch: extends upward and right from the top third of the trunk.
- Lower right branch: extends from the middle-lower trunk toward the squirrel side.
- Stairs: begin at front left base and curve upward to the middle balcony.
- Badger: left front near the carrot patch.
- Squirrel: right side near the bench and basket balcony.
- Pond: right front corner.
- Stream: left front corner curving toward the bridge.
- Bridge: placed between stream and pond, angled slightly diagonally.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check that the tree stands straight before sewing small decorations permanently. Add extra stitches through the bottom ring, roots, and base mat if the tree leans. The front opening should remain wide enough to show the rooms clearly.
For the owl, keep the eyes large and close together. For the badger, the white center stripe must be straight and bold. For the squirrel, curve the tail upward and slightly behind the body so it looks full from the front.
- Use black embroidery for all noses and mouths.
- Add tiny white eye highlights with one short stitch if you want a brighter expression.
- Trim all yarn tails carefully after securing them inside the piece.
- Steam lightly only if your yarn label allows it. Do not press the stuffed animals flat.
Care Notes
This piece is best used as a decorative display or gentle playset. Because it includes many tiny mushrooms, flowers, pebbles, carrots, and interior pieces, supervise young children if the parts are not permanently sewn down.
- Spot clean with a damp cloth.
- Do not machine wash if cardboard or paperboard is used inside the tree floors.
- Use plastic canvas instead of cardboard if you want a more washable structure.
- Let the project dry flat in a well-ventilated area.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The tree opening faces forward and shows three rooms.
- The top cap is flat with a raised bark rim.
- The stairs curve from the base to the middle level.
- The owl is securely perched on the left branch.
- The badger sits near the carrot patch.
- The squirrel holds a basket near the right bench.
- The pond, stream, bridge, mushrooms, stones, and flowers are sewn down neatly.
- All small details are secure and yarn ends are hidden.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the tree house gently with a soft brush. Start at the top branches and work downward so loose dust does not settle into finished areas. Avoid pulling on the leaves, railings, stair ropes, or tiny flowers.
For small stains, dab the spot with cool water and mild soap. Do not scrub the bark texture. Blot with a clean towel and reshape the piece with your hands while damp. Keep the hollow rooms open as the tree dries.
Store the playset upright in a dry place. Place tissue paper inside the rooms if storing for a long time. This helps the front opening and floors keep their shape. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight to reduce fading.
