This detailed amigurumi play mat features a deep green woodland base with a brown walking path, a glowing-style campfire ring, stacked logs, pebble stones, a patchwork tent, sleeping bags, a teddy bear, a fox, an owl in a tree, cone trees, round topiary trees, mushrooms, flowers, cattails, rolled blankets, and small forest details arranged just like a cozy handmade camping scene.
Skill Level
Intermediate. A confident beginner can follow this pattern if they are comfortable with working in the round, changing colors, making flat panels, sewing small parts, and shaping amigurumi pieces. Most pieces use basic stitches, but the project has many separate details.
Finished Size
- Play mat: about 24 in wide by 28 in long after blocking.
- Tent: about 8 in wide, 6 in tall, and 8 in deep.
- Bear: about 5 in tall when seated.
- Fox: about 5 in tall when seated.
- Campfire: about 5.5 in across including stone ring.
- Tall trees: about 6 to 8 in tall depending on stuffing.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in dark forest green, moss green, olive green, light green, brown, tan, cream, gray, charcoal, rust orange, bright orange, yellow, red, white, blue, teal, soft pink, lavender, and small floral colors.
- 3.5 mm crochet hook for most amigurumi pieces.
- 4.0 mm crochet hook for the play mat base if you want a softer drape.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Scissors.
- Two 8 mm safety eyes for the bear, two 7 mm safety eyes for the fox, and two 6 mm safety eyes for the owl, or black embroidery thread for a child-safe version.
- Optional: one small battery tea light for display only. Do not use real flame or heat near yarn.
Gauge
Using worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, 6 single crochet stitches and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in. Gauge does not need to be exact, but your stitches should be tight enough so stuffing does not show through.

Important Construction Notes
Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless a row instruction is given. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stuff firmly enough for shape, but not so tightly that the stitches stretch.
The play mat is made as a large flat rectangle with softly rounded corners. The campfire circle, paths, trees, animals, tent, logs, stones, flowers, and mushrooms are made separately and sewn on. This makes the finished scene dimensional and close to the image layout.
Large Woodland Play Mat Base
The base is a rounded rectangle in dark forest green with a raised brown border. The front edge is slightly curved, and the upper left side includes a brown path area. Use a 4.0 mm hook for the base.
Main Green Mat

Sew this narrow mound behind the campfire, curving it gently from the left tree area toward the tent. Add tiny flowers and mushrooms along its top edge.
Placement Layout
Before sewing everything permanently, lay all pieces on the mat and compare the layout to the image. The campfire should be central, the tent should sit at the upper right, and the animal sleeping area should sit left of the fire.
- Sew the green mat base and brown edge first.
- Sew the curved brown path on the left side.
- Sew the raised green mound behind the fire area.
- Sew the campfire glow circle slightly below center.
- Add logs, flames, and stones to the campfire.
- Sew the tent to the upper right, opening facing the fire.
- Sew the sleeping bags to the left of the campfire.
- Attach the bear and fox onto their sleeping bags.
- Sew the owl tree at the back left.
- Sew cone trees around the back and sides.
- Add the right topiary tree near the right edge.
- Attach mushrooms, flowers, pebbles, rolled blankets, cattails, and the front log last.
Detailed Sewing Positions
- Campfire: center it about 10 in from the front edge and 11 in from the left edge.
- Bear sleeping bag: place left of the fire, angled slightly upward toward the back left corner.
- Fox sleeping bag: place just above the bear sleeping bag, angled toward the fire.
- Tent: place on the upper right, with the front opening facing diagonally toward the fire.
- Owl tree: place at the upper left, behind the sleeping bags.
- Tall cone tree: place behind the campfire, slightly right of center.
- Front log: place in front of the campfire, angled diagonally across the lower right side.
- Rolled blankets: place right of the campfire, between the fire and tent.
- Front mushroom patch: place on the lower right corner patch.
- Left flowers: place on the brown path and left green edge.
Surface Embroidery Details
Use surface embroidery to create the quilt-like, detailed look shown in the image. Keep stitches small and neat so the piece stays soft and handmade.
- Add cream running stitches around sleeping bag edges.
- Add blue and teal lines on the tent ridge and front opening.
- Add tiny yellow dots to patchwork squares.
- Add dark green short stitches to the mat for grass texture.
- Add white dots to each red mushroom cap.
- Add brown bark lines to the tree trunks and logs.
- Add small black eyes and noses with embroidery if avoiding safety eyes.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew the bear’s muzzle firmly before embroidering the nose so the face stays centered. The bear should have a simple oval nose and a short straight mouth. Keep the expression soft and neutral.
For the fox, keep the white face patch slightly oval and centered low on the face. The pointed ears should sit high on the head. Add dark brown paw tips if you want the small paws to match the image more closely.
The owl should face forward from the branch. Sew the owl slightly above the branch line so it looks perched, not hanging. Add a tiny yellow beak between the cream eye circles.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not use hot water, bleach, or high heat.
- Press gently with a towel to remove extra moisture.
- Reshape the tent, trees, animals, and stones while damp.
- Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The campfire has a yellow-orange glow circle, 6 logs, layered flames, and a full stone ring.
- The tent has a triangular A-frame shape, patchwork outside, green inside, and blue lining.
- The bear and fox are attached to separate quilted sleeping bags.
- The owl is sewn onto a branch in the left tree.
- There are cone trees, round trees, mushrooms, flowers, rolled blankets, pebbles, cattails, and a front log.
- All small parts are sewn securely with no loose tails.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For long-term display, keep the play mat on a clean dry shelf or table. Avoid placing heavy objects on the tent or trees because the stuffed shapes may flatten over time.
If dust collects on the scene, use a soft brush to clean around the fire stones, flowers, and mushrooms. Do not pull on the small decorations. When storing, wrap the whole piece loosely in tissue paper and keep it in a breathable cotton bag.
