Tithonia Sunset Market Caravan – Crochet

Tithonia Sunset Market Caravan – Crochet

This warm little caravan scene combines a mini crochet camper, a market stall, a cozy sleeping nook, and two character dolls into one collectible display. It has the charm of a handmade amigurumi décor piece, the appeal of a cottagecore caravan gift, and the detail many shoppers look for in artisan crochet home accents.

The finished set is designed for makers who love a crochet caravan display, a miniature market stand, and character dolls that feel ready for a handmade shop listing. From the raccoon vendor to the tiny bicycle, every section is sized to create a polished boutique-style piece that looks rich, playful, and carefully finished.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Design Overview

This pattern recreates the full sunset-toned caravan scene shown in the image.

The caravan is open at the side so the interior stays visible. The left front section becomes a market counter with a striped awning and pennant bunting. Inside, the wall holds shelves, jars, a painting, a clock, utensils, and a tiny chick on a shelf.

The right side contains a bed with a striped sunset blanket and a flower pillow. The center holds a compact stove and cooking area. Outside the caravan are potted flowers, produce, a pie, a honey jar, a bean basket, a stool, a chick figure, a raccoon vendor, and a bicycle.

Color placement matters. The cream shell should dominate. Sunset orange and clay-coral are used on the lower caravan band, awning, bicycle accents, blanket stripes, flowers, and stall details. Brown shades ground the furniture. Golden yellow is reserved for the chick and small decorative accents.

Yarn and Hook Plan by Section

Caravan Floor Platform

Main Floor Base

Using 3.0 mm hook and cream, ch 31.

  1. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, 30 sc.
  2. Rows 2 through 20: ch 1, turn, sc across, 30 sc.
  3. Fasten off cream.

Change to clay orange and work 3 rows of sc evenly around the outer edge of the rectangle to create the lower sunset band visible along the caravan base.

Cut plastic canvas slightly smaller than this rectangle and whipstitch a second matching rectangle behind it, sandwiching the insert. This makes the base flat and sturdy.

Step Platform

Using 3.0 mm hook and tan, make a rectangle 8 sc by 3 rows. Make two. Join around three sides, insert a small plastic canvas piece, close, and sew to the lower doorway opening on the right front side.

Caravan Side Walls

Back Wall

Using 3.0 mm hook and cream, ch 31.

  1. Rows 1 through 15: sc across, 30 sc.
  2. Rows 16 through 20: shape the roof curve by decreasing 1 stitch at each end of every row.
  3. Rows 21 through 24: continue decreasing only at the beginning of each row for a gentle rounded top profile.

Make two mirror pieces. Join them around plastic canvas or use one thickened panel if you prefer a single back wall. Sew upright at the rear edge of the base.

Front Half Wall and Stall Opening

The image shows a lower wall at the front left with an open serving area above it. Create this in two pieces.

Lower front wall: Using cream and 3.0 mm hook, make a rectangle 14 sc wide and 8 rows tall. Add 2 rows in clay orange around the bottom edge only.

Door-side front support: Make a narrow rectangle 4 sc wide and 15 rows tall in cream. This becomes the right front vertical support near the bed side.

Sew both to the floor, leaving the center open so the market counter remains visible. The left side should feel like a stall opening, not a closed wall.

Right Side Partial Wall

Using cream and 3.0 mm hook, make a rectangle 20 sc wide and 13 rows tall. Round the upper front corner over 4 short rows. Sew this to the right edge of the floor. It frames the bed section and supports the roof.

Curved Roof and Outer Shell

The caravan roof is the main visual feature. It curves from front to back and slightly overhangs the opening.

Using 3.0 mm hook and cream, ch 33.

  1. Rows 1 through 30: sc across, 32 sc.
  2. Do not fasten off. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the rectangle.

Steam block lightly. Curve the panel over a pre-cut plastic canvas arch. Sew one long edge to the left top wall line and the other edge to the right wall and front supports. Let the roof extend forward slightly to match the image.

For the lower outer trim on the right side and lower rear side, add narrow clay orange edging with surface slip stitches. This gives the soft striped caravan band visible in the photo.

Doorway Curtain Flap

On the right front exterior, the image shows a small rolled cream flap. Make a tiny rectangle in cream, 6 sc by 5 rows, roll it once, and stitch it to the doorway edge as a decorative side flap.

Market Counter and Exterior Bench

Counter Block

Using 3.0 mm hook and tan, make two rectangles 14 sc by 5 rows and one long strip to wrap the sides. Join into a shallow box. Insert plastic canvas. Top with a sage green cover made as a separate flat piece sewn only along the back edge so it drapes softly.

Upper Shelf Board

Make a flat strip in cream, 14 sc by 2 rows. Sew across the stall opening. This is the white ledge holding the flower pots.

Awning

Using 3.0 mm hook and clay orange, ch 16.

  1. Rows 1 through 6: sc across.
  2. Rows 7 and 8: increase 1 stitch at each end to create a slight overhang.

Add a cream underside row in FLO along the front edge so the awning lip looks thicker. Insert a thin curved plastic canvas strip and sew the back edge above the stall opening, angling it downward slightly.

Pennant Bunting

Using 1.75 mm hook, chain a long cream strand. Make 7 tiny triangle flags in cream, clay orange, terracotta, and soft coral.

Each flag: ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next, turn, dec. Sew or crochet directly onto the chain strand. Drape under the awning.

Interior Shelves

Make two shelves with 2.5 mm hook in light brown.

  • Top shelf: 18 sc by 2 rows.
  • Middle shelf: 12 sc by 2 rows.

Stitch the longer shelf near the top left wall. Place the shorter shelf below it. Leave space between them for mini jars and produce.

Kitchen Area

Stove Body

Using 2.5 mm hook and gray, make a small cuboid box.

  • Front and back panels: 6 sc by 7 rows.
  • Sides: 4 sc by 7 rows.
  • Top: 6 sc by 4 rows.

Join with very light stuffing or a plastic insert. Add black knobs as French knots or tiny beads. Embroider an oven opening. Sew in the center back area.

Pots and Pan

Use 2.0 mm hook.

  • Large lidded pot: gray. Work 6 sc in MR, then 12, then 18. Work 3 plain rounds. Add one round in BLO, then a short straight wall. Make a flat lid and tiny knob.
  • Frying pan: black. Work a flat circle to 12 sts, then one round even. Add a chain handle and stiffen lightly.
  • Small pot: black or charcoal. Work to 12 sts, then 2 rounds even.

Hanging Towel

Using 2.0 mm hook and warm orange, ch 8. Work 5 rows of sc. Fold into a triangle, stitch one corner to the wall beside the utensils.

Utensils

With 1.75 mm hook or embroidery, make one ladle, one spatula, and one spoon in gray. Stitch them flat to the wall. A short chain and tiny oval head are enough at this scale.

Bed Frame, Mattress, Blanket, and Pillow

Bed Base

Using 3.0 mm hook and light brown, make a rectangular box 10 sc long, 8 sc deep, and 7 rows tall on each vertical side. Insert plastic canvas in the top and bottom panels so the bed holds its shape.

Sew the bed into the right rear corner, flush against the wall.

Mattress

Using 2.5 mm hook and tan, make two rectangles 10 sc by 8 rows. Join with light stuffing. Keep it thin.

Sunset Blanket

This striped blanket is important for the look of the scene.

Using 2.5 mm hook, ch 15.

  1. Rows 1 and 2: rust.
  2. Rows 3 and 4: orange.
  3. Rows 5 and 6: mustard.
  4. Rows 7 and 8: coral.
  5. Rows 9 and 10: berry red.
  6. Rows 11 and 12: plum.

Fasten off. Drape over the mattress so the stripes run horizontally. Stitch lightly at the back edge only, letting the front hang naturally.

Flower Pillow

Using 2.0 mm hook and mustard or tan, make two circles of 8 sc in MR, then 16 sc. Join with a touch of stuffing.

Add a flower on the front with rust petals and a yellow center. Use 1.75 mm hook for the petals if you want crisp points.

Clock

With 2.0 mm hook and cream, make 6 sc in MR, then 12 sc. Add a brown outline and embroider simple hands.

Mini Jars for the Top Shelf

Use 2.0 mm hook and make 8 small jar shapes.

For each jar, start with 4 sc in MR, increase to 8 sc, work 2 rounds even, then add a contrast lid with one round in BLO. Use red, cream, orange, mustard, brown, and black accents to imitate preserves and pantry jars.

Sew them close together along the top shelf. Vary heights slightly by adding or removing one plain round.

Produce for the Middle Shelf

Make tiny pieces with 2.0 mm hook.

  • 2 carrots in orange with green tops.
  • 2 green vegetables shaped like cucumbers or zucchini.
  • 3 berry jars or jam pots in red and cream.

These should be small enough to sit neatly without covering the shelf boards.

Front Signboard

Make a tiny cream rectangle, 5 sc by 8 rows, and stitch short vertical lines with fine gray or black thread to suggest handwritten menu text. Sew it inside the stall opening near the left side.

Little Chick Figure

The yellow chick appears twice in the scene: once as a standing exterior doll and once as a tiny shelf ornament. Make one large chick and one mini chick.

Shorts

Using 2.5 mm hook and denim blue, make a small waist tube of 18 sts for 3 rounds. Split into two leg openings and work 2 rounds on each side. Add a tiny tan belt and center buckle.

Bicycle

This piece needs structure, so use 1.75 mm hook and thin yarn wrapped over wire.

Wheels

Make 2 flat circles in gray or black.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR.
  • Rnd 2: inc around, 12.
  • Rnd 3: 1 sc, inc around, 18.

Seat and Basket

Make a tiny brown seat as a 4 sc oval. For the front basket, crochet a very small tan cup shape and stitch to the handlebars. Add a tiny support bar to the rear if desired.

Lean the bicycle against the right side of the caravan for display.

Final Placement of Exterior Props

  • Place three flower pots on the left shelf ledge.
  • Place one flower pot on the table surface at lower left.
  • Set the produce crate, pie, and honey jar on the green-covered bench.
  • Place the bean basket and stool in front.
  • Stand the large chick on the front left ground area.
  • Stand the raccoon in the center front.
  • Lean the bicycle on the right.

Assembly Order

  1. Complete the floor platform.
  2. Sew back wall, partial side wall, and front supports.
  3. Attach and shape the curved roof.
  4. Add lower trim and doorway flap.
  5. Install bed, stove, shelves, and interior décor.
  6. Build the front counter, awning, and bunting.
  7. Make and place all mini props.
  8. Make the raccoon, chick, and bicycle last so you can size them against the caravan.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Pin every major part before sewing permanently. Keep the raccoon eyes low enough to create the gentle expression seen in the image. Add a small white muzzle highlight, a centered black nose, and short eyebrow stitches only if needed.

Shape the caravan roof with your hands after assembly so the curve feels soft, not sharp. Arrange the blanket with a relaxed drape. Tilt the flower heads slightly outward so the stall looks full and lively.

Care Notes

Keep this piece for display rather than rough play. Because it includes wire, inserts, and many tiny sewn items, it should be handled gently. Store away from direct sunlight to protect the warm sunset shades.

If gifting, attach the small accessories securely or display them in a shallow tray beside the caravan.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Is the roof evenly curved and centered?
  • Does the stall awning angle downward slightly?
  • Are the jars and produce balanced across the shelves?
  • Does the raccoon stand steadily in front?
  • Is the blanket striped in the correct sunset order?
  • Are the flower pots varied in height and placement?
  • Is the bicycle narrow and delicate, not oversized?

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust with a soft dry brush or cool air on low setting. Do not soak the full assembled scene. For spot cleaning, dab gently with a barely damp cloth and let dry completely before moving the accessories.

Store flat in a covered box with tissue support around the bicycle, awning, and dolls. Avoid crushing the roof curve or bending the flower stems during storage.
