Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is designed to recreate the dachshund amigurumi shown in the image as closely as possible. The finished dog has a large rounded head, a short neck, a slightly pear-shaped body, slim arms, short legs, long hanging dachshund ears, and a soft sailor summer outfit.

The body is crocheted in firm amigurumi stitches using a small hook. The overalls are worked directly around the body and legs so the striped pants look neat and fitted. The accessories are made separately and sewn or placed around the doll for a full display set.

Finished Size

  • Dog height: about 9.5 inches from top of head to sandal sole.
  • Head width: about 3.2 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 3.7 inches from neck to bottom of shorts.
  • Ear length: about 2.8 inches each.
  • Hat diameter: about 3.4 inches.
  • Bag height: about 2.2 inches, not including strap.
  • Sunflower pot height: about 2 inches.
  • Watering can width: about 2.4 inches including spout and handle.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The main stitches are simple, but the pattern includes shaping, color changes, small appliques, embroidery, and assembly. A confident beginner can complete it by following each round carefully.

Materials

  • Sport weight or light DK cotton yarn in warm medium brown for dog body.
  • Small amount of darker brown yarn for muzzle shading and ear details.

Gauge Notes

Gauge is important because the outfit and accessories are fitted. With the main hook, 8 sc and 8 rounds should measure about 1 inch in firm amigurumi tension. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook so the stuffing does not show.

The dachshund in the image has tight, visible crochet rows with smooth curves. Stuff the head and body firmly, but do not overstuff the ears, arms, bag, hat, pot, or watering can. These smaller details should stay neat and slightly flat where needed.

Color Placement Guide

  • Dog body: warm medium brown.
  • Face: brown head, black oval nose, black safety eyes, pink cheeks.
  • Ears: brown, long, hanging down beside the face.
  • Top: yellow short-sleeve shirt visible at chest and arms.
  • Overalls: blue bib and blue-and-white striped shorts.
  • Straps: blue, vertical, with small beige buttons.
  • Bag: blue crossbody sailor bag with black anchor.

Important Construction Notes

Work most pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round. For the striped shorts, carry yarn loosely inside the work or cut yarn cleanly and weave ends after each color change.

When sewing, use small hidden stitches. The image has a clean handmade finish, so keep seams at the back or underside whenever possible. Pin every part before sewing permanently to check the angle and balance.

Head

Use brown yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. The head is round and slightly wider at the cheek area, with the face looking forward. Stuff firmly as you go, especially around the muzzle and back of the head.

  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)

  18. R26: repeat 3 sc, dec around. (24)
  19. R27: repeat 2 sc, dec around. (18)

Insert the safety eyes between R15 and R16, about 10 stitches apart. The eyes should sit slightly above the center of the face. Do not place them too low because the muzzle and nose need space beneath.

Stuff the head firmly. Leave a long tail for sewing to the neck. Do not close the bottom opening completely; it should fit over the neck area later.

Muzzle

The muzzle is a small oval on the lower center of the face. Use the same brown yarn or a slightly lighter brown if you want a soft raised snout like the image.

  1. Ch 6.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, 3 sc, 3 sc in last ch, work on opposite side of chain, 3 sc, inc in last st. (12)
  3. R2: inc, 3 sc, inc in next 3 sts, 3 sc, inc in next 2 sts. (18)

  5. R4: sc in each st around. (24)

FO with a long tail. Lightly stuff the muzzle. Sew it between R16 and R22 of the head, centered below the eyes. The top edge should sit about 2 rounds below the eyes, and the bottom edge should end near R22.

Nose and Mouth Embroidery

Use black embroidery thread. Stitch a horizontal oval nose over the center top of the muzzle. Make the nose about 6 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall. Fill it with satin stitches until it looks rounded and slightly raised.

  • Add one short vertical black stitch from the center bottom of the nose down 1 round.
  • Add a tiny curved smile on each side if desired, but keep it subtle.
  • Add one tiny white embroidery stitch on each safety eye to create a glossy highlight if your eyes are plain black.

Pink Cheeks

Make two small pink circles for the cheeks. They should sit on the lower face, outside the muzzle, directly under the eyes.

  1. Use pink yarn and 2.00 mm hook.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  4. Sl st to first st and FO with a long sewing tail.

Sew one cheek on each side of the muzzle between R17 and R20. Flatten them gently as you sew so they look like soft blush patches instead of large buttons.

Long Dachshund Ears

Make two ears in brown yarn. Each ear is long, floppy, rounded at the bottom, and slightly tapered at the top. Do not stuff the ears. They should hang flat against the sides of the head.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)
  4. R4: repeat 2 sc, inc around. (24)

  14. R23-R24: sc in each st around. (18)
  15. R25: repeat 4 sc, dec around. (15)
  16. R26: sc in each st around. (15)

Flatten the opening so the ear forms a soft oval flap. Work 7 sc through both layers to close. FO with a long tail. Sew each ear to the side of the head between R10 and R13, slightly behind the eyes. Angle the ears downward so they frame the face.

Body with Yellow Shirt Base

The body is short and rounded, with a narrow neck and a wider lower belly hidden by the overalls. Begin with brown for the lower body connection, then switch to yellow for the shirt area.

  1. Use brown yarn. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: repeat 1 sc, inc around. (18)
  4. R4: repeat 2 sc, inc around. (24)

  13. R19: sc in each st around. (24)
  14. R20: repeat 2 sc, dec around. (18)
  15. R21: sc in each st around. (18)

Stuff the body firmly. Leave a long tail for sewing. The yellow area should look like a short-sleeve shirt under the blue overalls.

Yellow Shirt Rib Edge

To make the shirt edge visible above the overalls, join yellow yarn to one front loop from R10 of the body.

  1. Work 36 sl st around the unused front loops of R10.
  2. Sl st to the first stitch and FO.
  3. Weave in the tail neatly inside the body.

Legs

Make two short brown legs. These legs are partly covered by blue-and-white striped overall shorts and blue sandals. Stuff them firmly at the foot and lightly at the upper leg.

First Leg

Second Leg

  1. Repeat R1-R10 of the first leg.

  1. Change to blue at the end of the second leg.
  2. Ch 4, join to the first leg with sc in any stitch. This creates the crotch bridge.
  3. R1: sc 14 around first leg, sc 4 across one side of chain, sc 14 around second leg, sc 4 across opposite side of chain. (36)
  4. R2: with blue, sc in each st around. (36)
  5. R3: change to white, sc in each st around. (36)
  6. R4: change to blue, sc in each st around. (36)
  7. R5: white, sc in each st around. (36)
  8. R6: blue, sc in each st around. (36)
  9. R7: white, sc in each st around. (36)
  10. R8: blue, repeat 10 sc, dec around. (33)
  11. R9: white, sc in each st around. (33)
  12. R10: blue, repeat 9 sc, dec around. (30)

FO white. Keep blue attached if you want to crochet the bib directly. Stuff the joined leg and shorts section firmly. The stripes should look narrow and even, like the image.

Attach Body to Shorts

Place the yellow-shirt body on top of the striped shorts. Match the 30-stitch top of the shorts to the lower body around R7-R9 area. Sew the shorts to the body using blue yarn, leaving the yellow shirt visible above the waist.

For a cleaner finish, sew through only the inner loops of the top stripe. This keeps the waistline smooth and makes the overalls look like fitted clothing instead of a separate bulky piece.

Sewing the Head to the Body

Place the head on top of the neck with the muzzle centered over the bib. The dachshund should look forward, not upward. Pin the head first and check from the front, side, and back.

Use the brown tail from the head to sew around the neck twice. Add extra stitches at the front and back so the head does not wobble. The ears should hang freely and not be caught in the neck seam.

Adding the Outfit Details

The overalls should look bright and playful. The blue bib sits over the yellow shirt, while the striped shorts cover the lower body and legs. Keep the white stripe rounds clean and straight so they match the sailor style in the image.

  • Sew the sun applique to the bib before placing the bag if the bag overlaps the lower front.
  • Sew the cloud applique slightly to the other side for balance.
  • Keep the buttons even and placed at the top corners of the bib.
  • Make sure the straps lie flat over the shoulders.
  • Use tiny stitches when tacking the bag strap so it does not slide.

Facial Placement Guide

The face is the most important part of this dachshund. The image has a sweet expression with large shiny eyes, a soft black nose, and pink cheek circles. Take time with placement before fastening anything permanently.

  • Eyes: between R15 and R16, about 10 stitches apart.
  • Muzzle: centered below eyes, from about R16 to R22.
  • Nose: centered on upper muzzle, about 6 stitches wide.
  • Cheeks: on both sides of muzzle, between R17 and R20.
  • Ears: attached from R10 to R13, hanging downward.
  • Flowers: on top left side of headband.

Optional Texture for Ears

The ears in the image show clear crochet ridges. To enhance this look, you can surface crochet a few vertical lines on each ear using the same brown yarn. Keep the lines subtle so they do not look striped.

  1. Thread a yarn needle with brown yarn.
  2. Work 3 long running stitches from the ear top to the lower half.
  3. Space the lines evenly across the front of each ear.
  4. Pull gently so the ear remains flat.

How to Make the Doll Sit Flat

The dog is shown lying or sitting neatly with the legs pointing downward. To help your doll sit flat, do not overstuff the upper thighs. The lower feet should be firmer than the hip area.

  • Press the leg tops inward before closing the body connection.
  • Keep the sandals flat at the bottom.
  • Sew the shorts evenly around both legs.
  • Balance the head before final sewing.

Beginner Tips for Clean Color Changes

For the blue-and-white striped shorts, change color on the final yarn-over of the last stitch of the previous round. This gives a cleaner transition and prevents the new color from starting too low.

If you do not like carrying yarn inside the shorts, cut each color after every round and weave in the ends. This takes longer, but it creates a neater inside and keeps white stripes bright.

Beginner Tips for Sewing Small Pieces

Use sewing pins before stitching. Small accessories can shift while sewing, especially the cheeks, flowers, bag, and appliques. Pinning allows you to compare both sides and adjust the expression.

When sewing with cotton yarn, split the yarn tail into fewer plies if the seam looks bulky. This is helpful around the face and bib where the surface should remain smooth.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the full doll from the front. The eyes should be even, the ears should hang at the same height, and the muzzle should sit centered above the bib. Add a few extra stitches at the back of the ears if they flare outward too much.

  • Brush away loose fibers with your fingers.
  • Tighten any visible yarn tails and weave them inside.
  • Shape the hat brim flat with gentle pressure.
  • Make sure the bag hangs diagonally like a crossbody sailor pouch.
  • Confirm the sunflower pot and watering can are small enough to look like props, not oversized toys.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished amigurumi with cool water and a soft cloth. Avoid soaking if you used safety eyes, buttons, or embroidered details. Let the doll air dry fully before storing.

Do not machine dry. Heat can change the shape of cotton yarn and may loosen glued or sewn details. Keep the doll away from rough play if it is intended as a display piece.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and securely sewn to the body.
  • The muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • The black nose is oval and fully embroidered.
  • The pink cheeks are even on both sides.
  • The long ears hang downward beside the face.
  • The yellow shirt is visible under the blue overalls.
  • The shorts have clear blue-and-white stripes.
  • The bib has both the sun and cloud appliques.
  • The straps have two beige buttons.
  • The sandals have white trim and tiny anchor details.
  • The blue bag has a black anchor and diagonal strap.
  • The yellow hat has a blue ribbon and small bow.
  • The sunflower pot and watering can are finished as matching props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the dachshund in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Strong sunlight can fade the blue overalls, yellow hat, and pink cheeks over time. If displaying it on a shelf, rotate it occasionally so one side does not fade faster.

For dust removal, use a clean soft makeup brush or a small dry cloth. Brush gently around the face, flowers, bag strap, and sunflower petals. Do not pull on embroidered anchors, button threads, or applique edges.

If the doll becomes misshapen, gently reshape it by hand. Press the ears flat, round the head with your palms, and smooth the hat brim. Avoid heavy steam unless you are experienced with blocking cotton amigurumi.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Keep the hat, sunflower pot, and watering can in the same box so the full sailor dachshund set stays together.
