Crochet Tutorial: Rainbow Patchwork Puppy Amigurumi – Free Crochet Pattern

This rainbow patchwork puppy amigurumi is a cheerful garden-style crochet doll with a cream head, lavender muzzle, mismatched pastel ears, yellow and green arms, blue and pink legs, denim-blue overalls, flower embroidery, sandals, a tiny crossbody bag, and a matching blue sun hat. The finished look is soft, playful, and full of handmade details, just like the puppy shown in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi project. The puppy is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds, with separate pieces sewn together at careful angles to match the seated plush shape in the photo.

The finished puppy has a large rounded head, a protruding oval muzzle, floppy ears in two different colors, long soft arms, dangling legs, rounded sandal feet, and a structured pair of blue overalls. The hat, flower pots, watering can, and small bag are included as decorative accessories.

  • Finished puppy height: about 13 inches from top of head to bottom of sandals when seated.
  • Head width: about 4.75 inches across.
  • Body height: about 4.5 inches before legs.
  • Leg length: about 5 inches including foot and sandal.
  • Hat diameter: about 5.5 inches across brim.
  • Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in cream, lavender, sky blue, pastel pink, pastel yellow, pastel green, denim blue, brown, beige, white, yellow, mint, teal, dark green, light gray, terracotta, and small flower colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the puppy and accessories.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for flowers, bag details, hat trim, and small embroidery-style appliqués.
  • 12 mm black safety eyes.
  • 18 mm black safety nose or a large oval black plastic nose.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.

  • One tiny tan button for the bag flap.
  • Black embroidery thread for eyebrow arcs and foot details.
  • White and yellow embroidery thread or yarn scraps for daisy details.
  • Optional: cardboard or plastic canvas for the base of the flower pots.

Gauge and Stitch Texture

Use a tight amigurumi gauge so the stuffing does not show through. In the image, the stitches are small, even, and compact, creating a smooth plush surface. A 3.0 mm hook with worsted weight yarn should give a firm fabric.

  • Gauge guide: 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 inch.
  • Stuffing style: firm in the head, muzzle, body, and feet; lighter in the ears and arms.
  • Joining style: sew pieces with matching yarn and small mattress stitches.
  • Visible stitch direction: most pieces are worked in spirals with the right side facing outward.

Important Construction Notes

The puppy is built from a rounded cream head and a smaller rounded body. The head should be slightly larger than the body, giving the toy the soft, childlike proportions seen in the image.

The muzzle is lavender and sits on the lower front of the face. It is not flat. It should be stuffed firmly and sewn as a rounded oval dome so the nose projects forward.

The ears are mismatched. The left ear from the viewer’s side is pink and curls downward. The right ear from the viewer’s side is aqua blue and droops outward. The arms and legs also use different pastel colors to create the patchwork effect.

Color Placement Guide

  • Head: cream.
  • Muzzle: lavender.
  • Left ear: pastel pink.
  • Right ear: aqua blue.
  • Left arm: pastel yellow.
  • Right arm: pastel green.
  • Left leg: pale blue.
  • Right leg: pastel pink.
  • Body base: cream, mostly covered by overalls.

FO with a long sewing tail. Stuff firmly. Flatten the back slightly with your fingers, keeping the front rounded. Pin the muzzle to the lower face, centered between the eyes. The top edge should sit around R15 of the head, and the bottom edge around R24.

Sew around the muzzle with small stitches. Add extra stuffing before closing the final inch. Attach the black safety nose or oval nose at the upper center of the muzzle, between R8 and R9 of the muzzle piece.

Subtle Muzzle Spiral Detail

The image shows visible circular rounds on the muzzle. To emphasize this, use lavender yarn and surface slip stitch loosely around the front spiral, following the natural crochet rounds from the center outward for 3 to 4 circles.

  • Start near the center of the muzzle.
  • Insert hook under surface bars only.
  • Work loose sl sts around the natural spiral.
  • Stop before the outer edge so the detail remains soft.

Left Pink Ear

Use pastel pink yarn. This ear is long, floppy, and curves downward. Do not overstuff. The ear should bend softly like the one on the left side of the image.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)

Before sewing everything permanently, pin the head, body, arms, and legs together. The puppy in the image sits with the legs dangling forward and the arms resting along the sides of the overalls.

  1. Sew the body to the bottom center of the head. The neck should tuck under the head and not appear long.
  2. Sew the arms to the upper body at R21-R23 of the body, just below the head.
  3. Angle the arms downward so they touch the sides of the overalls.
  4. Sew the legs under the shorts, about 6 stitches apart at the front bottom of the body.
  5. Make sure both feet point forward and rest evenly.
  6. Sew the overalls in place after the limbs are attached, adjusting the shorts around the legs.

Facial Embroidery

The face should stay simple and sweet. The glossy black eyes and large black nose are the strongest features. The embroidered brows add expression without making the face too busy.

  • Use black embroidery thread for the curved eyebrow lines.
  • Place each brow about 3 rounds above each eye.
  • Make each brow 4 to 5 stitches long.
  • Curve the brow slightly upward toward the outside of the face.
  • Do not add a mouth unless desired; the image focuses on the nose and muzzle.

Optional Cheek Shaping

For a more sculpted face, use cream yarn to gently pull the eyes inward. Insert the needle at the bottom back of the head, come out beside one eye, go back beside the same eye, and exit at the starting point.

Repeat for the other eye. Pull gently, not tightly. This creates a soft indentation that helps the eyes sit naturally above the rounded lavender muzzle.

Patchwork Balance Tips

  • Keep the cream head and body neutral so the pastel patches stand out.
  • Make the ears soft and floppy, not stiff.
  • Keep the lavender muzzle centered and rounded.
  • Use denim blue consistently for overalls, bag, and visible garment details.
  • Add flowers in small clusters rather than covering every surface.
  • Let the mismatched arms and legs remain clearly visible.

Detailed Assembly Order

  1. Crochet the head and attach the eyes.
  2. Crochet and sew the lavender muzzle.
  3. Add the black nose to the muzzle.
  4. Crochet both ears and sew them to the head.
  5. Crochet the body and attach it to the head.
  6. Crochet the arms, legs, feet, and sandals.
  7. Attach feet to legs, then attach legs to the body.
  8. Sew the arms to the body.
  9. Crochet and fit the denim overalls.
  10. Add straps, buttons, bag, and daisy embroidery.
  11. Add head flowers and eyebrow embroidery.
  12. Make the hat, flower pots, and watering can.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the puppy from the front before finishing. The head should sit upright, the muzzle should face forward, and the overalls should be centered. Adjust with extra hidden stitches if anything tilts too far to one side.

Sew all accessories securely if the toy will be handled often. The hat may remain removable, but the flowers, bag, and sandals should be firmly attached with several small stitches.

For the final face, trim all loose yarn ends and gently smooth the muzzle with your fingers. The nose should sit centered near the top of the lavender muzzle, with the eyes evenly spaced above it.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak if using safety eyes, plastic nose, buttons, or cardboard inserts.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded area.
  • Reshape the ears, hat brim, and sandals while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The lavender muzzle is centered and firmly stuffed.
  • The pink and aqua ears droop at soft angles.
  • The yellow and green arms hang evenly beside the body.
  • The blue and pink legs are equal in length.
  • The sandals are wrapped securely around both feet.
  • The overalls have two straps, two buttons, and daisy details.
  • The crossbody bag sits diagonally across the front.
  • The head flowers are balanced around the ears.
  • The blue hat has a wide brim and floral band.
  • The garden pots and watering can are small enough to sit beside the puppy.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the puppy in a dry place away from direct sunlight to keep the pastel colors bright. If displayed on a shelf, dust it gently with a soft brush every few weeks.

If the toy becomes flattened, reshape it by hand. Add a small amount of fresh stuffing only if a seam can be opened safely and sewn closed again.

Keep the flower appliqués and buttons away from rough handling. These small decorative details create the charm of the design, so checking them occasionally will help the finished puppy stay beautiful for a long time.
