Crochet Tutorial: Baby Green Dragon with Sunflowers – Free Crochet Pattern

This sweet baby green dragon is crocheted as a soft amigurumi doll with a rounded head, tiny cream horns, side ears, little wings, and a curled tail. The dragon wears blue-and-yellow striped overalls with button straps, flower embroidery, bee details, sunflower sandals, and a crossbody daisy bag. The full scene also includes a straw sun hat with bees, a small watering can, and a golden beehive accessory.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed to recreate the baby dragon shown in the image as closely as possible. The finished dragon has a large square-rounded head, a smaller body hidden inside striped overalls, short arms, chunky feet, white claw details, small cream horns, a sunflower on the head, white wings, and several tiny garden-themed accessories.

The toy is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round. Stuff firmly enough to hold the shape, but do not overstuff the head or body because the finished look should stay soft, rounded, and slightly chubby.

Finished Size

  • Dragon height: about 9.5 inches tall when made with sport or light worsted cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
  • Head width: about 4.25 inches across after stuffing.

Gauge and Construction Notes

For a neat amigurumi finish, keep your stitches tight enough that stuffing does not show. The image has a clean, compact crochet texture with visible horizontal rows on the head and body. A 2.25 mm hook with cotton yarn gives the right dense look.

The baby dragon is built from separate pieces. The head and body are made separately, then sewn together. The overalls are crocheted around the body and legs. Accessories are attached last, so you can adjust placement before sewing permanently.

The dragon’s head is larger than the body and has a soft square shape. To achieve this, stuff the head firmly at the lower sides and gently flatten the front with your fingers while sewing on the muzzle and cheeks.

Main Head

Use moss green yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. The head should be broad, rounded, and slightly boxy, like the dragon in the image.

Insert the safety eyes between R18 and R19, about 12 stitches apart. The eyes should sit low on the face, giving the dragon a baby-like expression. Begin stuffing the head now. Push more stuffing into the cheeks and lower sides.

  1. R30: sc 4, dec; repeat 6 times. (30)
  2. R31: sc 3, dec; repeat 6 times. (24)
  3. R32: sc 2, dec; repeat 6 times. (18)

Finish stuffing. FO, leaving a long tail. Close the remaining opening with a yarn needle. Shape the head by gently pressing the front flat and rounding the upper corners.

Short Dragon Muzzle

Use moss green yarn. The muzzle is subtle and soft, not long. It should sit just below the eyes, with two tiny nostril curves and a gentle smiling mouth.

  1. R1: ch 6. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain, sc 3, inc in last ch. (12)
  2. R2: inc, sc 3, inc in next 3 sts, sc 3, inc in next 2 sts. (18)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 4, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 4, sc 1, inc, sc 1. (22)
  4. R4: sc around. (22)

FO with a long tail. Stuff lightly. Sew the muzzle across the lower face between R20 and R25 of the head. Keep the top edge just under the eyes. Do not overstuff, because the image shows a low, rounded snout.

Mouth and Nostril Embroidery

  • With dark green thread, embroider two tiny curved nostrils on the muzzle, each about 2 stitches wide.
  • With the same thread, make a small curved smile below the center of the muzzle.
  • Use one short horizontal stitch on each cheek to create the soft cheek lines shown in the image.
  • With black thread, embroider two short sleepy eyebrow lines above the eyes, angled slightly downward toward the center.
  • Add a tiny white highlight stitch on each black eye if using plain safety eyes.

Dragon Body

Use moss green yarn. The body is pear-shaped and smaller than the head. It will be mostly covered by the striped overalls, but the neck and upper arms remain visible.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)

  13. R21: sc 3, dec; repeat 6 times. (24)
  14. R22: sc around. (24)

Stuff the body firmly, especially at the lower belly. FO with a long tail. Sew the body to the bottom center of the head after the legs and overalls are prepared, or sew it now if you prefer a fixed base.

This joined section becomes the bottom of the overalls. Continue directly into the overalls pattern below.

  15. R36-R38: with light blue, sc around. (24)

Stuff the joined legs and lower body as you work. The overalls should be snug around the dragon’s belly. Do not make the torso too tall; the image shows a compact body with the head sitting close to the straps.

Overall Bib

The front bib is light blue and sits on the chest. Work it directly onto the front of R38, centered between the arms.

  1. Find the center front 12 stitches of the upper body.

  6. R9-R13: sc around. (10)
  7. R14: sc 3, dec; repeat 2 times. (8)

Stuff the lower hand lightly. Leave the upper arm almost flat so it sews smoothly against the body. FO with a long tail. Sew arms to the sides of the body at R35-R38, angled slightly forward.

With white yarn, embroider three short claw stitches on each hand. Each claw should be about 2 rounds long and placed near the lower front edge of the hand.

  7. Attach arms at the sides of the upper body, angled slightly down toward the overalls.
  8. Sew the sandal soles under the feet and the blue straps across the feet.
  9. Add the tiny sunflower decorations to the outer sides of the sandals.
  10. Place the crossbody strap diagonally across the front and sew it at the shoulder and hip.
  11. Sew the daisy bag to the lower end of the strap. Add the tiny bee on the flower.
  12. Embroider the cheeks, nostrils, smile, eyebrows, claws, and overall flowers last.

Take your time shaping the face. The baby dragon in the image has a calm and sweet expression. Keep the eyebrows short, the smile tiny, and the cheeks subtle. Small details are what make the finished toy look close to the reference.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, embroidery, or small sewn accessories are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the head, wings, feet, and hat while damp.
  • Keep small accessories away from children under 3 years old unless all parts are embroidered and securely attached.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid soaking the dragon in water. Use a damp cloth and gently press over the surface instead of rubbing. Rubbing can loosen embroidered flowers, bee stripes, and the small facial stitches.

Store the finished dragon upright or lying flat in a dry place. Do not place heavy objects on top of the head, wings, hat, or daisy bag. These pieces are small and may flatten if stored under pressure for a long time.

If the sunflower petals or daisy petals curl after storage, lightly mist them with water, shape them with your fingers, and let them dry naturally. Do not use high heat, because cotton yarn and acrylic yarn can lose texture or become stiff.

For display, keep the dragon away from direct sunlight for long periods. Yellow, blue, green, and brown yarn may fade over time when exposed to strong light. A shaded shelf or craft display box is best for keeping the colors bright.

Check the buttons, bees, flowers, and strap attachment points from time to time. If any piece feels loose, reinforce it with matching yarn and a yarn needle. Small decorative parts look best when they are firmly sewn and neatly hidden at the back.
