Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a soft amigurumi dinosaur doll with a cute square-rounded face, a small dinosaur tail, short arms, rounded feet, and detailed garden accessories. The finished doll is worked mostly in continuous rounds using single crochet stitches, with carefully shaped increases and decreases to match the plump form in the image.

The dinosaur has a large head compared with the body, giving it a friendly baby-dinosaur look. The body is shorter and wider than the head, with blue overalls built over a yellow striped shirt. Decorative appliques are added to match the small daisy, cloud, and mountain patches shown on the outfit.

Finished Size

  • Dinosaur doll: about 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall when using DK or sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across the widest cheek area.
  • Body with overalls: about 4 inches tall from neck to shorts hem.
  • Sun hat: about 4.75 inches wide across the brim.
  • Watering can: about 2 inches long.
  • Potted flower: about 2.25 inches tall.

Your finished size may vary depending on yarn brand, hook size, and personal tension. For the firm rounded shape shown in the photo, keep your stitches tight enough that stuffing does not show through the fabric.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The main doll uses basic amigurumi stitches, shaping, color changes, sewing, and small decorative details. The accessories are small but simple when worked slowly.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight cotton yarn in soft pink for the dinosaur body.
  • Blue yarn for the overalls.
  • Yellow yarn for shirt stripes, sandals, bag, sun hat ribbon, and details.
  • White yarn for daisy petals, cloud patch, eye highlights, and flower details.
  • Green yarn for leaves and flower stem.
  • Tan or beige yarn for the sun hat and watering can.
  • Brown yarn for the small flower pot.
  • Bright pink yarn for the flower accessory.
  • Peach or light orange yarn for sandal buckles.
  • Black embroidery thread for mouth, eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial outlines.
  • Pink embroidery thread or darker pink yarn for cheek spirals.
  • Two safety eyes, 18 to 20 mm, green if available.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for the main doll.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for appliques and tiny details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Two small tan buttons, about 6 to 8 mm, for overall straps.
  • Optional: fabric glue for securing tiny patches after sewing.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 single crochet in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • R = round
  • FO = fasten off

Important Construction Notes

Work the dinosaur in continuous rounds unless the instructions say otherwise. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. Stuff the head firmly, but do not overstuff the cheeks so much that the face becomes sharp or stretched.

The head should look wider at the cheek line than at the top. To create the face from the image, the head is shaped like a rounded cube with soft corners. The eyes are placed low and wide, giving the dinosaur its adorable expression.

The body is crocheted separately from the head. The overalls are made directly onto the lower body shape, then straps, patches, buttons, and bag are added at the end. This gives the outfit a layered look without making the doll too bulky.

Gauge

  • Using 2.5 mm hook and DK cotton: 7 sc x 7 rounds equals about 1 inch.
  • Gauge is not critical, but your stitches must be tight and even.
  • If holes appear between stitches, use a smaller hook.
  • If the fabric feels stiff and hard to work into, use a slightly larger hook.

Small Dinosaur Snout and Cheek Shape

The dinosaur in the image has a soft, flat, smiling lower face. This is created with light sculpting rather than a separate muzzle. Use pink yarn tail or matching sewing thread to shape the lower face.

  1. Thread a long strand of pink yarn through a needle.
  2. Insert the needle at the bottom center of the head.
  3. Bring it out below the left eye, around R20.
  4. Insert again 1 stitch inward and come out below the right eye.
  5. Pull gently to create a soft cheek dip.
  6. Repeat once, keeping the shaping subtle.
  7. Knot securely at the bottom of the head.

The face should remain rounded and plush. Avoid pulling too tightly, because the doll should look gentle and soft like the photo.

Body

The body begins in pink at the neck and changes into the yellow shirt, then blue overalls. The shape is short, rounded, and slightly wider at the belly.

Start with pink yarn.

Optional Green Eye Detail

If you cannot find green safety eyes, use black safety eyes and add green yarn rings around them. This creates a similar bright-eyed look.

  1. With green embroidery thread, stitch a ring around the outside edge of each eye.
  2. Add a tiny white stitch near the upper side of each eye for a highlight.
  3. Keep the stitches close to the eye so they do not look too heavy.

Head and Body Assembly

Place the body upright on a flat surface. Position the head so the face points forward and the cheeks sit evenly over the shoulders. The head should be larger than the body but balanced.

  1. Pin the head to the neck and body.
  2. Check the eyes from the front and both sides.
  3. Sew around the neck opening using small, strong stitches.
  4. Go around the join twice for durability.
  5. Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the final gap.
  6. Weave in the yarn tail securely.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, inspect the doll from the front. The face should look cheerful, with the mouth centered and the eyes level. Adjust the eyelashes and eyebrows with a needle if they need slight shaping.

Use small stitches to secure loose accessories. The bag strap should lie flat across the chest. The overalls should sit close to the body, and the straps should meet the buttons evenly.

Add blush lightly to the cheeks if desired. A small amount creates the soft pink glow shown in the image. Do not over-apply blush, especially if the doll will be handled often.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or blush are used.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from high heat, direct sunlight, and damp storage spaces.
  • For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and avoid small buttons.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly sewn and does not wobble.
  • The eyes are even and securely attached.
  • The bow and daisy are placed on opposite sides of the head.
  • The overalls have a front bib, straps, buttons, and patches.
  • The bag hangs diagonally across the body.
  • The sandals are attached neatly to both feet.
  • The tail is sewn to the back and points slightly outward.
  • The hat, watering can, and potted flower are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid soaking the doll. Use a damp cloth and gently dab the surface instead of rubbing. If the yarn becomes flattened, let it dry fully and reshape the head, cheeks, and feet with your fingers.

Store the doll upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Keep the hat brim flat so it does not curl. Small accessories such as the watering can and flower pot can be stored beside the doll in a small pouch.

If the doll is used for display, dust it gently with a soft brush. Check the sewn areas occasionally, especially the bag strap, bow, flower, and buttons. Reinforce any loose stitches with matching yarn.
