This sailor lion amigurumi is a seaside-inspired crochet doll with a soft beige lion face, chunky brown mane, navy floral overalls, striped sailor shirt sleeves, yellow sandals, a small crossbody beach bag, a navy sailor hat with red ribbon, anchor details, life rings, and a tiny starfish prop.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
Using medium weight yarn and a 2.75 mm hook, the finished lion measures about 10.5 inches tall from sandals to top of head, not including the removable sailor hat. Your final size may change depending on yarn thickness, hook size, and stuffing firmness.
Skill Level
This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. The body parts are simple amigurumi shapes, while the mane curls, sandals, small bag, floral overalls, and sailor accessories require careful counting and neat sewing.
Materials
- Medium weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in beige for the lion’s head, arms, legs, muzzle, and ears.
- Dark brown yarn for the mane curls and tail tuft.
- Navy blue yarn for the overalls, shirt trim, hat, bag, and lower outfit details.
- White yarn for muzzle, sailor stripes, daisies, bag top, hat anchor, and life rings.
- Red yarn for ribbon, small anchor applique, bag stripe, and life ring bands.
- Mustard yellow yarn for sandal straps, daisy centers, bag trim, and crossbody cord.
- Small amount of black yarn or embroidery thread for nose, mouth, and eyelashes.
- Pair of 10 mm black safety eyes.
- Two small wooden or tan buttons, about 10 to 12 mm wide, with anchor decoration if available.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- 2.75 mm crochet hook for the main doll.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for flowers, anchor, bag details, and life ring bands.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and fabric glue if preferred for tiny appliques.
Abbreviations Used
- MR = magic ring

- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 single crochet in the same stitch
- dec = invisible decrease over the next 2 stitches

- FLO = front loop only
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- FO = fasten off
- R = round or row
Gauge and Crochet Style
Work tightly enough that stuffing does not show between stitches. A firm amigurumi fabric is important because the lion has a round head, smooth muzzle, shaped outfit, and many sewn-on decorations. If your stitches look loose, use a smaller hook.
Most parts are worked in continuous spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Stuff the head and body firmly, but keep the arms, legs, muzzle, and ears softer so the finished toy keeps a cuddly handmade look.
Important Pattern Notes
- The lion is made from separate head, body, legs, arms, ears, muzzle, mane curls, tail, overalls, sandals, bag, hat, and decorations.
- The face in the photo has a large round head, small rounded ears, a white oval muzzle, shiny eyes, and a deep black triangular nose.
- The mane sits like a thick curly frame around the head, starting behind the ears and continuing under the chin.
- The navy overalls cover the body and legs. White daisies are sewn randomly across the front and legs.
- The sailor hat is separate and sits beside the lion in the photo, but you may sew it to the head if making the toy for a child.
- Use pins before sewing. The exact look depends on placing the eyes, muzzle, mane, straps, and flowers symmetrically.
Head
Use beige yarn and the 2.75 mm hook. The head is rounded, slightly wider at the cheeks, and softly flattened at the front where the muzzle will be attached.

Muzzle
Use white yarn. The muzzle is a wide oval made from an oval foundation chain. It covers the lower center of the face and should sit just below the eyes.
- R1: Ch 7. Starting in second ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Work along the other side of the chain, sc in next 4 ch, inc in last ch. 14 sts.
- R2: Inc, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next 3 sts, sc in next 4 sts, inc in next 2 sts. 20 sts.
- R3: Sc in next st, inc, sc in next 5 sts, repeat sc in next st, inc 3 times, sc in next 5 sts, repeat sc in next st, inc 2 times. 26 sts.
- R4: Sc in each st around. 26 sts.
- R5: Sc in next 2 sts, inc, sc in next 7 sts, repeat sc in next 2 sts, inc 3 times, sc in next 7 sts, repeat sc in next 2 sts, inc 2 times. 32 sts.
- R6: Sc in each st around. 32 sts. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
Lightly stuff the muzzle before sewing. Place it between R18 and R25 of the head. The top edge should almost touch the lower edges of the eyes. Sew around slowly, adding a little stuffing at the center to make the muzzle gently raised.
Nose and Mouth
- With black yarn, embroider a rounded triangle nose across the top center of the muzzle, about 5 stitches wide and 4 rows tall.
- Fill the triangle with horizontal satin stitches until it looks solid and plush.
- Bring the yarn down from the bottom point of the nose and sew one straight vertical line to the lower center of the muzzle.
- Make a small curved mouth by stitching one short line to the left and one short line to the right.
- For the tiny eyelashes shown in the image, add one short black stitch beside the outer corner of each eye.
Ears
Make 2 with beige yarn. The ears are round, slightly cupped, and placed at the upper sides of the head in front of the mane.
- R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3: Repeat sc in next st, inc around. 18 sts.
- R4: Repeat sc in next 2 sts, inc around. 24 sts.
- R5-R6: Sc in each st around. 24 sts.
- R7: Repeat sc in next 2 sts, dec around. 18 sts.
- R8: Sc in each st around. 18 sts. FO, leaving a long tail.
Flatten each ear gently without stuffing. Fold the bottom edge slightly inward to create a cupped ear shape. Sew ears to the head between R10 and R16, about 18 stitches apart across the top front.
Inner Ear Detail
Make 2 with beige yarn using the same color or a slightly lighter beige. These small semicircles add the soft raised inner-ear look seen in the image.
- R1: Make 6 sc in MR, but do not close into a full circle. Ch 1 and turn.
- R2: Inc in each st across. 12 sts. Ch 1 and turn.
- R3: Repeat sc in next st, inc across. 18 sts. FO, leaving a tail.
Sew one inner ear piece inside each ear, keeping the curved side toward the top. Use small stitches so the inner detail sits flat and does not hide the ear’s rounded edge.
Curly Mane Frame
The mane is built from many crocheted curls sewn around the head. This creates the thick, bouncy brown frame shown in the image. Make the curls full and close together so very little beige head shows behind the ears.
Long Mane Curl
Make 18 to 22 curls with dark brown yarn. Use more curls if your yarn is thin or if you want a fuller mane.
- Ch 18.
- Work 3 sc in the second ch from hook.
- Work 3 sc in each remaining ch across.
- The chain will twist naturally into a tight curl.
- FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
Short Chin Curls
Make 7 short curls for the lower chin area.
- Ch 12.
- Work 3 sc in the second ch from hook.
- Work 3 sc in each remaining ch across.
- FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
Pin the long curls around the head from one lower cheek, up behind the ear, across the top back, behind the other ear, and down to the opposite cheek. Pin the short curls under the chin like a thick beard edge.
Sew each curl at its starting end and again at the middle if needed. Let the curled tips remain raised and textured. The mane should look chunky, soft, and irregular rather than perfectly flat.
Body
The body is worked in navy because it forms the base of the overalls. It is rounded, wider at the belly, and narrower at the neck. The beige arms and legs are attached separately.
- R1: With navy yarn, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3: Repeat sc in next st, inc around. 18 sts.
- R4: Repeat sc in next 2 sts, inc around. 24 sts.
- R5: Repeat sc in next 3 sts, inc around. 30 sts.
- R6: Repeat sc in next 4 sts, inc around. 36 sts.
- R7: Repeat sc in next 5 sts, inc around. 42 sts.
- R8-R16: Sc in each st around. 42 sts.
- R17: Repeat sc in next 5 sts, dec around. 36 sts.
- R18-R19: Sc in each st around. 36 sts.
- R20: Repeat sc in next 4 sts, dec around. 30 sts.
- R21: Sc in each st around. 30 sts.
- R22: Repeat sc in next 3 sts, dec around. 24 sts.
- R23: Sc in each st around. 24 sts.
- R24: Repeat sc in next 2 sts, dec around. 18 sts. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Stuff the body firmly at the bottom and medium-firm at the neck. The body should be round enough to fill the overalls but not so hard that the legs splay outward too much.
Striped Sailor Shirt Yoke
The visible shirt area sits above the overalls and around the shoulders. It uses navy and white stripes, matching the sleeves in the photo.
- Join white yarn to any front loop of R22 of the body.
- Stripe R1: Ch 1, sc around in the exposed surface stitches at the upper body. Sl st to close.
- Change to navy yarn.
- Stripe R2: Ch 1, sc around. Sl st to close.
- Change to white yarn.
- Stripe R3: Ch 1, sc around. Sl st to close.
- Change to navy yarn.
- Stripe R4: Ch 1, sc around. Sl st to close and weave in ends.
If you prefer a cleaner finish, embroider the white shirt stripes across the top of the body after assembly instead of surface crocheting. Keep the stripes narrow and even so they look like the photo.
Legs
Make 2. Start with beige for the feet, then switch to navy for the pant legs. The feet are rounded and visible inside the yellow sandals.
- R1: With beige yarn, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3: Repeat sc in next st, inc around. 18 sts.
- R4: Sc in next 5 sts, inc in next 4 sts, sc in next 9 sts. 22 sts.
- R5-R7: Sc in each st around. 22 sts.
- R8: Sc in next 5 sts, dec 4 times, sc in next 9 sts. 18 sts.
- R9: Sc in next 4 sts, dec 3 times, sc in next 8 sts. 15 sts.
- R10-R12: Sc in each st around. 15 sts.
- Change to navy yarn.
- R13: BLO sc in each st around. 15 sts.
- R14-R21: Sc in each st around. 15 sts.
Stuff the foot firmly and the upper leg lightly. Flatten the top of the leg so it can be sewn neatly to the lower body. FO the first leg. Make the second leg the same way.
Sew both legs to the lower front of the body between R3 and R8 of the body. The feet should point forward and sit close together, with the sandals touching slightly like the image.
Arms
Make 2 with beige yarn. The arms are short, rounded, and positioned downward beside the overalls. Add simple paw lines at the ends.
- R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3: Repeat sc in next 3 sts, inc around. 15 sts.
- R4-R6: Sc in each st around. 15 sts.
- R7: Sc in next 3 sts, dec around. 12 sts.
- R8-R15: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R16: Flatten the opening and sc through both layers across 6 sts. FO, leaving a long tail.
Stuff the paw and lower arm lightly. Sew arms to the sides of the body at R20 to R22. Angle them slightly downward so the paws rest beside the rounded belly.
With dark beige or brown embroidery thread, sew two short vertical lines on each paw. These lines should sit near the lower front of each arm and imitate the soft paw details in the image.
Overall Bib Front
The overalls in the photo have a high navy bib with two straps and buttons. This front panel is crocheted separately and sewn to the body for a layered outfit look.
- With navy yarn, ch 13.
- Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. 12 sts. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 2-7: Sc across. 12 sts. Ch 1, turn after each row.
- Row 8: Dec, sc in next 8 sts, dec. 10 sts. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 9: Sc across. 10 sts. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 10: Dec, sc in next 6 sts, dec. 8 sts. FO, leaving a long tail.
Place the bib on the front upper body, centered under the striped shirt area. The bottom of the bib should overlap the belly, and the top should sit just below the neck. Sew around the sides and lower edge only.
Overall Straps
Make 2 with navy yarn. These straps run from the bib up to the shoulders and are decorated with anchor buttons.
- Ch 18.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across. 17 sts.
- Ch 1, turn, sc across again. 17 sts.
- FO, leaving a sewing tail.
Sew one end of each strap to the top corners of the bib. Cross the straps slightly over the shoulders or sew them straight upward depending on your preferred look. Attach the back ends to the upper back of the body.
Sew one small tan or wooden anchor button to each strap where it meets the bib. If you do not have anchor buttons, embroider a tiny navy anchor on plain tan buttons.
Overall Waist and Cuffs
The overalls have a neat fitted waist and pant cuffs. These small details help separate the body from the legs and make the outfit look tailored.
- With navy yarn, surface crochet a line of sl sts around the waist where the body meets the leg area.
- With navy yarn, surface crochet around the lower edge of each pant leg at the color-change line above the beige foot.
- Use small hidden stitches to secure any loose areas so the pants look smooth.
- Do not make the cuffs too bulky because the yellow sandals must remain visible.
White Daisy Appliques
Make 10 to 12 small daisies. The photo shows white daisies with yellow centers scattered across the navy overalls and pant legs. Make some daisies slightly tilted for a natural handmade look.
Daisy Center
- With mustard yellow yarn and 2.25 mm hook, make 5 sc in MR.
- Sl st to the first sc. FO.
📌Thank you for reading the article
Daisy Petals
- Join white yarn to any stitch of the yellow center.
- Ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st into the same center stitch.
- Repeat one petal in each center stitch until you have 5 small petals.
- FO, leaving a sewing tail.
Sew daisies to the front bib, belly, and pant legs. Place 2 daisies on the bib area, 4 to 5 across the belly, and 3 to 4 on the legs. Keep them flat and secure so the petals do not curl too much.
Yellow Sandals
Make 2 sandals. The sandals have yellow soles and straps with a light shell-like side accent. They sit around the beige feet and should be sewn on after the legs are attached.
Sandal Sole
- With mustard yellow yarn, ch 8.
- R1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc in next 6 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Work along the other side, sc in next 5 ch, inc in last ch. 16 sts.

- R3: Sc in next st, inc, sc in next 6 sts, repeat sc in next st, inc 3 times, sc in next 6 sts, repeat sc in next st, inc 2 times. 28 sts.
- FO, leaving a long tail.
Front Sandal Strap
- With mustard yellow yarn, ch 9.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. 8 sts.
- Ch 1, turn, sc across. 8 sts.
- FO, leaving a tail.
Ankle Sandal Strap
- With mustard yellow yarn, ch 14.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. 13 sts.
- FO, leaving a tail.
Place one sole under each beige foot and sew around the edge. Sew the front strap across the top front of the foot. Sew the ankle strap around the back lower leg, just above the foot, leaving the front foot visible.
Small Shell Accent
Make 2 with pale peach or beige yarn. These imitate the small shell-like decorations visible near the sandals.
- Make 6 sc in MR, pull tight, and sl st to close.
- Ch 1, work 2 hdc in each st around. 12 hdc.
- FO, leaving a tail.
Fold each circle slightly and sew one to the outer side of each sandal. Add two tiny yellow stitches across the shell to create a textured beach sandal detail.
Tail
The tail is beige with a small brown tuft. It peeks out from the side behind the overalls in the image.
Tail Cord
- With beige yarn, ch 14.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sl st in each ch across.
- FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
Tail Tuft
- With dark brown yarn, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R3-R4: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
- R5: Dec around. 6 sts.
- Stuff very lightly, FO, and close.
Sew the tuft to one end of the beige tail cord. Sew the other end to the back side of the body at lower hip level. Position it so the brown tuft rests beside the navy pant leg.
Crossbody Beach Bag
The small bag is navy with a yellow rim, red stripe, white top, and a diagonal yellow strap. It hangs at the lion’s right hip in the photo.

Sew the dome to the top of the bag. Add two or three red vertical stitches on the white top to match the red nautical accent in the image.
Yellow Crossbody Strap
- With mustard yellow yarn, ch 55.
- Starting in second ch from hook, sl st across.
- FO, leaving tails at both ends.
Sew one end of the strap to the left upper edge of the bag and the other end to the right upper edge. Place the strap diagonally across the lion’s chest from left shoulder to right hip. Tack it with a few hidden stitches so it stays in place.
Navy Sailor Hat
The hat is worked separately. In the photo, it is navy blue with a round crown, flat brim, red ribbon, bow, and a small anchor on the front. You may display it beside the lion or attach it to the head.
Hat Crown

Wrap the ribbon around the hat above the brim and sew the ends at one side. Keep the seam on the side where the bow will sit. The red band should be smooth and bright against the navy hat.
Red Bow
- With red yarn, ch 10.
- Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. 9 sts. Ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2-4: Sc across. 9 sts.
- FO and weave in ends.
- Wrap red yarn around the center 6 to 8 times to pinch the rectangle into a bow.
- Secure with a knot and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew the bow to the side of the hat over the ribbon seam. Add two short red yarn tails hanging from the bow if you want it to look closer to the photo.
Hat Anchor Applique
Use white or pale pink yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. This tiny anchor is sewn on the front side of the hat.
- Ch 7.
- Sl st in second ch from hook and in next 5 ch to make the anchor stem.
- Ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sl st back into the lower stem.

- Ch 3, sl st into the top of the stem to make a tiny loop.
- FO, leaving a sewing tail.
Sew the anchor to the hat front. Use a few extra stitches to shape the bottom arms so they curve slightly upward.
Red Anchor Hair Applique
The lion has a small red anchor decoration on the upper head near one ear. Make it with red yarn and sew it on after the mane and ears are attached.
- Ch 8.
- Sl st in second ch from hook and in next 6 ch to create the vertical stem.
- Ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sl st into the lower stem.

- Ch 4, sl st back into the top of the stem to make the upper ring.
- FO, leaving a long tail.
Sew the red anchor to the upper front of the head, slightly above one eye and close to the ear. Keep it flat and secure because this small detail strongly matches the nautical look in the image.
Life Ring Props
Make 2 life rings. In the image, the rings are white with four red bands and are displayed around the lion. They can be used as photo props or sewn to a mobile or display mat.
📌Thank you for reading the article
White Ring
- With white yarn, ch 24.
- Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
- R1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. 24 sts.
- R2: Repeat sc in next 3 sts, inc around. 30 sts.
- R3: Sc in each st around. 30 sts.
- R4: Repeat sc in next 3 sts, dec around. 24 sts.
- Stuff lightly as you work, then FO and sew the opening neatly if needed.
Red Bands
- With red yarn, wrap around the ring in four equal sections.
- For each band, make 6 to 8 wraps around the white ring.
- Secure the yarn at the back with a knot and weave the end through the inside of the ring.
- Place bands at the top, bottom, left, and right to match a classic life preserver.
Starfish Prop
The small starfish is made in tan yarn. It has five arms and sits near the lion as a beach accessory.
- With tan yarn, make 5 sc in MR. Sl st to close.
- Arm 1: Ch 5, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sl st into the next center stitch.
- Repeat the arm instruction 4 more times until there are 5 arms.
- FO, leaving a tail.
- Use the tail to sew tiny shaping stitches between arms if you want the starfish to stay flat.
Add small tan or brown French knots to the center if desired. Keep the prop simple so it does not distract from the lion’s sailor outfit.
Optional Rope Texture for Bag Strap
The photo shows a cord-like yellow strap. For a thicker rope effect, make two mustard yellow chains of 55 stitches each, twist them together, and knot both ends before sewing them to the bag.
- Make sure the strap runs from the lion’s left shoulder to the right hip.
- Do not pull the strap too tight across the body.
- Tack the strap at the shoulder and opposite hip so it keeps the diagonal angle.
Joining the Head and Body
Place the head on the body with the muzzle facing forward and the overalls centered below. The lion in the image has a large head compared with the body, so do not push the head too low onto the neck.
- Pin the head to the body, checking from the front, sides, and back.
- Use the long body tail to sew through the neck opening and the bottom of the head.
- Sew around the neck twice for strength.
- Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the final stitches.
- Make sure the head sits upright and does not wobble.
Facial Balance and Mane Placement
Before final sewing, check that both eyes are level, the muzzle is centered, and the mane frames the face evenly. The brown curls should begin near the lower cheeks, rise around the ears, and continue around the back of the head.
- The ears should sit slightly in front of the mane.
- The top mane curls should not cover the red anchor applique.
- The lower chin curls should form a soft beard-like edge under the muzzle.
- The mane should look full but not hide the white muzzle.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the muzzle to the front of the head and embroider the nose and mouth.
- Sew the ears to the head, then add inner ear pieces.
- Sew the mane curls around the head, filling gaps with shorter curls as needed.
- Sew the head to the body firmly and check that the face looks forward.
- Sew arms to the upper sides of the body, angled downward.
- Sew legs to the lower body and attach sandals to the feet.
- Add the overall bib, straps, buttons, waist line, and pant cuffs.
- Sew daisies across the overalls, spacing them naturally.
- Add the tail to the back side of the body.
- Sew or tack the crossbody bag so it hangs at the right hip.
- Place the sailor hat beside the lion or sew it slightly tilted to the head.
- Add the life rings and starfish as separate photo props.
Care Notes
Spot clean the finished lion with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used wooden buttons, safety eyes, glue, or delicate appliques. Reshape the mane curls and hat brim with your fingers while the toy is still slightly damp.
If making this toy for a small child, replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes and sew every decoration very securely. Do not leave long loose straps, buttons, or small removable props with babies or toddlers.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
- The white muzzle is centered directly below the eyes.
- The brown mane fully frames the head with thick curls.
- The navy overalls have visible straps, buttons, cuffs, and daisy appliques.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the sailor lion in a dry place away from direct sunlight to protect the navy, red, and yellow colors from fading. Keep the hat brim flat by storing the hat beside the doll rather than underneath heavier items.
To refresh the mane, gently twist each curl around your finger. If the curls flatten during storage, lightly mist them with water, reshape them, and allow them to air dry completely before displaying again.
For long-term display, place the lion on a clean shelf or inside a clear display box. Keep the small life rings and starfish together in a labeled pouch so the complete sailor set stays organized.
