Crochet Tutorial: Yellow Dinosaur with Blue Wings – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful yellow dinosaur amigurumi wears striped blue overalls, green garden sandals, a tiny crossbody satchel, a blue bow, and a daisy flower on the head. The design also includes blue wings, a spiky tail, sleepy white eye patches, embroidered flowers, a carrot motif, a watering can, a sun hat, a carrot basket, and a tiny garden gnome for a complete playful display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using medium weight yarn and a 3.0 mm crochet hook, the standing dinosaur measures about 13 inches tall from feet to bow, about 7 inches wide across the body, and about 5 inches deep from snout to tail. The accessories are small display pieces made to match the proportions in the photo.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. Most pieces use single crochet in spiral rounds. The special look comes from shaping, color changes, neat sewing, and careful placement of small details.

Materials

  • Yellow yarn: main dinosaur body, head, snout, arms, legs, feet, tail, and toes.
  • Turquoise blue yarn: overalls, hat, bow, wing lining, and some stripe rows.

  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and embroidery needle.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring.
  • ch: chain.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch.
  • dec: invisible decrease over the next 2 stitches.
  • BLO: back loop only.
  • FLO: front loop only.
  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • R: round or row.
  • FO: fasten off.

Gauge and Tension

For the dinosaur, 6 single crochet stitches and 7 rounds should measure about 1 inch when worked firmly with medium weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. The fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

If your stitches are loose, go down a hook size. If your fabric is too stiff to shape, go up slightly. Keep the same hook throughout the body pieces so the proportions remain balanced.

Important Notes Before Starting

  • Work most pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff gradually and firmly, especially in the snout, feet, body, neck, and head.
  • For a neat toy, use invisible decreases and sew with matching yarn tails.
  • Pin every piece in place before sewing. The sleepy eyes, large snout, overalls, wings, and sandals create the character of this dinosaur.

Main Dinosaur Body

The body is worked from the lower belly upward. It should be rounded and pear-shaped, wide at the hips and narrower at the shoulders. The overalls will cover most of the lower body, but the yellow sides should remain visible.

  4. Sew the legs to the lower body, then sew the feet to the legs if not already attached.
  5. Sew three toes to each foot.
  6. Fit the overalls around the lower body and sew them in place discreetly at the back and side seams.
  7. Add the front bib, shoulder straps, and cream buttons.
  8. Sew the arms to the sides, letting them rest naturally over the overalls.
  9. Sew the tail to the back, then attach the blue tail spikes.
  10. Sew the wings to the upper back, one on each side of the spine.
  11. Add the sandals, straps, and ladybugs to the feet.
  12. Add the bow, head daisy, embroidered flowers, carrot motif, and satchel.
  13. Place the watering can, sun hat, carrot basket, and gnome around the finished dinosaur for display.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before making final knots. The large snout should be centered, the eye patches should angle down softly, and the green eyes should sit low on the white patches. This creates the gentle sleepy expression seen in the photo.

Use yellow yarn to shape the snout if needed. Insert the needle from the underside of the head to one nostril, pull gently, then move to the other nostril and repeat. This creates a soft sculpted muzzle without changing the friendly shape.

For the final face, add tiny white highlights to the black pupils. Add short yellow shaping stitches around the mouth area only if needed. Keep the expression simple and sweet.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak the toy if you used buttons, safety eyes, or wire-free shaped accessories.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Keep the toy away from high heat because it can affect shaping and stuffing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The neck is firmly stuffed and supports the head.
  • The snout is centered and securely sewn.
  • The eye patches are even and angled downward.
  • The overalls sit smoothly around the round belly.
  • The straps have two cream buttons at the front.
  • The satchel strap crosses the chest diagonally.
  • The wings are attached evenly on the upper back.
  • The tail points backward and slightly upward.
  • Each sandal has a green strap and a red ladybug.
  • The small garden accessories are shaped and stable for display.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the dinosaur upright or lying on its back with the snout supported. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the head, wings, bow, or hat brim.

If dust gathers on the stitches, use a soft dry brush and brush in the direction of the crochet rounds. For the tiny flowers and carrot details, dab gently instead of rubbing.

If the overalls or accessories flatten over time, reshape them with your fingers after lightly misting with water. Let everything dry completely before storing.

For long-term display, keep the dinosaur away from direct sunlight. Strong sunlight may fade the yellow body, blue overalls, green sandals, and red ladybugs.

Finishing Message

Your yellow dinosaur with blue wings is now complete. With its garden outfit, flower details, tiny satchel, sandals, hat, watering can, carrot basket, and gnome friend, this project makes a cheerful handmade display piece for spring, summer, or any cozy crochet collection.
