Crochet Tutorial: Cute Turtle in a Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

This cute turtle crochet pattern is designed to match the garden-style amigurumi in the photo: a soft green turtle with a rounded head, shiny black eyes, white face details, a straw hat with a blue bow, a yellow and blue striped dress, a brown shell, brown shoes, small flowers on the dress, a large daisy bouquet, plus matching accessories including a second sun hat, a sunflower purse, a watering can, and a tiny butterfly.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is worked mainly in continuous spiral rounds. The finished turtle has a large rounded head, a narrow neck, a soft pear-shaped body, a flared dress skirt, short arms, sitting legs, rounded brown shoes, and a curved shell attached to the back.

The accessories are intentionally included because they are important to the full look of the photo. You will make a large daisy held in the turtle’s hand, a straw hat on the turtle’s head, a second flat sun hat, a sunflower purse with a long strap, a small watering can, and a tiny butterfly.

Finished Size

  • Turtle height: about 9.5 inches from shoes to top of head, not including the hat brim.
  • Head width: about 3.75 inches across.
  • Body height: about 4 inches from neck base to bottom of dress.
  • Dress skirt width: about 4.5 inches across at the lower blue edge.
  • Large daisy: about 2.25 inches wide with a 4.5 inch stem.
  • Watering can: about 2.25 inches wide including handle and spout.
  • Sunflower purse: about 2.25 inches wide with a long shoulder strap.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in sage green for the turtle head, neck, arms, legs, and face base.
  • Worsted weight yarn in light yellow for the bodice, skirt stripes, flower centers, and sunflower petals.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for the skirt stripes, hat bands, bows, and small dress accents.
  • Worsted weight yarn in tan or straw beige for the hats.
  • Worsted weight yarn in dark brown for the shell, shoes, sunflower centers, and embroidered mouth.
  • Worsted weight yarn in white for the face patches and daisies.
  • Small amounts of peach, pink, green, cream, and dark purple for dress flowers and butterfly.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the turtle and most accessories.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for small flowers, bow details, butterfly, purse strap, and face patches.
  • 10 mm black safety eyes or glossy black sew-on buttons.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle, stitch marker, scissors, sewing pins.
  • Optional: thin floral wire or pipe cleaner for the daisy stem, covered safely with crochet.
  • Optional: a tiny amount of fabric glue only for securing thread ends, not for main construction.

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch

  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row

Gauge and Stitch Texture

Use a tight amigurumi gauge so the stuffing does not show through. With a 3.0 mm hook and worsted weight yarn, 6 sc rounds should measure about 1 inch in height, and 7 sc should measure about 1 inch across. The stitches in the photo look compact, even, and firm, so do not use a loose gauge.

If your stitches are too open, switch to a smaller hook. If your turtle becomes too stiff to shape, loosen your tension slightly but keep the fabric firm. The head should be rounded and smooth, while the dress skirt should flare outward softly.

Important Notes Before Starting

  • Work most pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff the head firmly, the neck very firmly, and the body moderately firmly.
  • The shell should be lightly stuffed so it curves outward without becoming bulky.
  • When changing colors, finish the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color.
  • For a cleaner dress stripe, join each color-change round with a sl st and ch 1 if preferred.
  • Leave long yarn tails on small pieces for sewing.

Turtle Head

The turtle has a large rounded head that is wider than the neck and body. The head should sit slightly forward, giving the turtle a sweet garden character. Use sage green yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

  16. R24: sc 4, dec, repeat around. 30 sts.

Insert the safety eyes between R15 and R16, about 8 stitches apart. The eyes should sit low enough to look gentle and high enough to leave space for the small embroidered mouth. Do not close the head yet.

  1. R25: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  2. R26: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.

Stuff the head firmly. Shape it with your hands so the front is softly rounded, not pointed. Leave the opening at 18 stitches because the neck will be sewn directly into it.

White Face Patches Around the Eyes

The photo shows soft white patches around both eyes, giving the turtle a bright, cute face. Make two small oval patches with white yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.

Make 2

  1. Ch 7.
  2. R1: Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain: sc 4, inc in last ch. 14 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 4, inc in next 3 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. 20 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 5, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 26 sts.
  5. FO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Place one patch around each eye. The inner edges should almost touch near the center of the face, and the outer edges should curve softly upward. Sew with small invisible stitches, keeping the safety eye centered on each patch.

Facial Embroidery

  • Use black embroidery thread to stitch two short curved eyelashes above each eye.
  • Use dark brown yarn or embroidery thread to stitch a tiny curved smile between R19 and R20.
  • Use a small amount of pink or peach yarn to make one tiny cheek stitch under each eye if desired.
  • Keep the expression delicate, because the eyes in the image are large, glossy, and sweet.

Neck

The neck is narrow and upright. It supports the large head and is visible above the yellow bodice. Use sage green yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

  1. R1: 8 sc in MR. 8 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 16 sts.
  4. R4 to R12: sc in each st around. 16 sts for 9 rounds.
  5. R13: sc 6, dec, sc 6, dec. 14 sts.
  6. R14: sc in each st around. 14 sts.
  7. FO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Stuff the neck firmly. The top of the neck should fit into the 18-stitch opening of the head. Pin before sewing so the head tilts just slightly forward.

Body Base

The body is hidden under the dress but should be pear-shaped, wider at the bottom, and narrow at the top. Use sage green yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.

  8. R12: sc 10, dec, repeat 3 times. 33 sts.
  9. R13: sc in each st around. 33 sts.
  10. R14: sc 9, dec, repeat 3 times. 30 sts.
  11. R15: sc in each st around. 30 sts.
  12. R16: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  13. R17: sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  14. R18: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.
  15. R19: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  16. FO and leave a long tail.

Stuff the body moderately. The lower body should be rounded but not hard, because the dress needs to sit over it naturally.

Yellow Bodice

The turtle wears a simple yellow sleeveless bodice above the striped skirt. Work this as a separate fitted piece and sew it around the upper body after the neck is attached.

  1. With yellow yarn, ch 31.
  2. R1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 30. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2 to R7: sc 30 across. Ch 1, turn after each row.
  4. R8: sc 5, ch 6, skip 5 sts, sc 10, ch 6, skip 5 sts, sc 5. Ch 1, turn. These chain spaces form the armholes.
  5. R9: sc 5, sc 6 into chain space, sc 10, sc 6 into chain space, sc 5. 32 sts.
  6. FO and leave a long tail.

Wrap the bodice around the upper body with the seam at the back, directly under the shell. Sew the back edges together. The neckline should sit at the base of the neck, and the armholes should be placed evenly at the sides.

Striped Dress Skirt

The skirt in the photo is rounded and flared, with yellow and blue horizontal stripes. It starts just below the bodice and widens toward the lower blue edge. Use joined rounds for clean stripes.

  19. R13: Ch 1, reverse sc around for a firm decorative edge, or sc around if reverse sc is difficult. Join and FO.

The skirt should flare outward gently and cover the lower body. If it curls too much, block it lightly with your fingers and let it dry flat.

Arms

The arms are short and curved, with one arm resting near the body and the other holding the daisy stem. Use sage green yarn.

Make 2

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3 to R5: sc in each st around. 9 sts.
  4. R6: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 6 sts.
  5. R7 to R14: sc in each st around. 6 sts.
  6. Stuff only the hand lightly. Leave the upper arm unstuffed so it can bend naturally.
  7. Flatten the opening and sc 3 across both layers. FO and leave a long tail.

Sew the arms to the sides of the bodice at a slight downward angle. The right arm should curve forward to hold the daisy stem. The left arm may rest against the dress.

Legs

The legs are short, rounded, and visible below the dress. Use sage green yarn for the legs and dark brown yarn for the shoes.

Make 2 Legs

  1. With sage green yarn, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

  6. R5: sc 4, dec 3 times, sc 4. 11 sts.
  7. R6: sc in each st around. 11 sts.
  8. FO and leave a long tail.

Insert each green leg slightly into each brown shoe and sew around. Sew the legs under the front of the dress so the turtle sits with both shoes facing forward.

Brown Turtle Shell

The shell is dark brown, rounded, and placed behind the body. It should be visible from both sides, rising behind the shoulders and curving down behind the skirt.

  1. With dark brown yarn, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.

  9. R13: sc 5, dec, repeat around. 36 sts.
  10. R14: sc 4, dec, repeat around. 30 sts.
  11. FO and leave a long tail.

Lightly stuff the shell. Flatten the open side slightly against the back of the turtle. Sew it from the upper back down to the skirt line, keeping the bottom edge tucked behind the dress.

Shell Ridge Lines

  • Use a slightly lighter brown yarn to embroider 5 vertical curved lines from the top center toward the lower edge.
  • Keep the lines shallow and evenly spaced so the shell still looks soft.
  • Do not over-tighten the embroidery, or the shell may pucker.

Sew two wings on each side of the body. Keep the upper wings slightly larger-looking by placing them higher and outward.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the neck firmly into the head opening. The head should tilt slightly forward.
  2. Sew the lower neck to the top of the body. Add extra stitches around the back for support.
  3. Wrap and sew the yellow bodice around the upper body, then attach the striped skirt beneath it.
  4. Sew the arms into the bodice armholes. Position one hand around the daisy stem.
  5. Sew the legs and shoes under the skirt so the turtle sits naturally.
  6. Sew the shell to the back, keeping the top visible behind the shoulders.
  7. Sew the hat onto the head at a gentle angle, with the blue bow on one side.
  8. Add the small head daisy, dress flowers, and leaves.
  9. Embroider eyelashes, brows, and the small curved mouth last so the expression stays balanced.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, wire stems, or tiny sewn accessories are used.
  • Press out extra water with a towel and reshape by hand.
  • Let the turtle dry flat in a shaded, airy place.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and slightly larger than the body.
  • The white eye patches are even and placed around the black eyes.
  • The neck is strong enough to hold the head upright.
  • The dress has a yellow bodice and blue-yellow striped flared skirt.
  • The shell is visible behind the body and lightly rounded.
  • The turtle has brown shoes, a straw hat with blue bow, and a small head flower.
  • The daisy bouquet, purse, watering can, second hat, and butterfly are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid soaking the finished turtle for long periods. The shell, hat brim, dress hem, and daisy petals can lose shape if they are heavily soaked or twisted.

For dust, use a soft brush and gently brush along the crochet stitches. For small stains, dab with a damp cloth and a tiny amount of mild soap. Avoid rubbing the embroidered face.

Store the turtle upright or lying on its back with the hat supported. Keep the accessories in a small breathable bag if they are not displayed with the turtle. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, especially on the blue and yellow dress stripes.
