Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi-style project. The finished duck measures about 14 to 16 inches tall when made with worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. The final size may vary depending on your yarn, hook size, stuffing amount, and personal tension.

The doll is worked mostly in continuous rounds. Clothing pieces are crocheted separately and sewn onto the body so the layered outfit looks like the image. The sailor jacket, bag, shoes, cap, crab, starfish, lighthouse, and fish are included as decorative parts.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced beginner. The pattern uses simple stitches, shaping, color changes, embroidery, surface slip stitches, and small appliqué details. Beginners can complete it if they work slowly and use stitch markers carefully.

Finished Measurements

  • Total height: about 14 to 16 inches from shoes to top crab.
  • Head width: about 5 inches across the cheeks.

  • Leg length: about 4 inches before shoes.
  • Sailor bag: about 3 inches wide.
  • Lighthouse prop: about 4 inches tall.

Gauge Notes

Gauge is not extremely strict for amigurumi, but your stitches should be tight enough so stuffing does not show through. If gaps appear, switch to a smaller hook. For the rounded head and smooth bill, firm tension is important. Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firm, and the limbs lightly enough to sit naturally.

Main Duck Head

Use white yarn. Work in continuous rounds. The head is large, round, and slightly wider at the cheek area. This creates the cartoon-style silhouette seen in the image.

  • Repeat five times.

Facial Shaping

To make the face more expressive, use a long strand of white yarn to gently sculpt the eye area. Insert the needle at the back lower head, come out near the inside lower corner of one eye, move across to the outer corner, and pull lightly. Repeat for the second eye. Do not pull too hard, or the face will pucker.

  • Keep the blue eye panels tall and smooth.
  • Keep the pupils low and slightly outward for a sweet expression.
  • Keep the bill centered and wide, extending past both eye panels.
  • Add a tiny black curved smile line on the bill if desired.

Body Assembly

  1. Sew the neck firmly to the body first.

  4. Sew the shoes onto the legs and angle the toes slightly outward.
  5. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body.
  6. Place the sailor jacket over the body and sew it in place around the shoulders, side seams, and lower back.
  7. Add the bag strap diagonally across the body.
  8. Sew the crab and starfish securely to the top of the head.
  9. Place the sailor cap, lighthouse, and fish props around the doll for the full nautical display.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the full silhouette before sewing every piece permanently. The head should be large and rounded, the bill should be wide and layered, and the legs should be long enough to dangle over an edge. The jacket should sit open so the pale blue striped shirt remains visible.

Use small hidden stitches to secure the bag strap, jacket lapels, sleeve cuffs, and shoe sides. Add final embroidery only after the doll is fully assembled, because the face and clothing may shift slightly while sewing.

  • Add white highlights to the pupils.
  • Add a curved mouth line to the bill.
  • Add tiny anchor details to the jacket and cap.
  • Add gold trim slowly with surface slip stitches.
  • Steam-block only the clothing pieces lightly if needed, never pressing the stuffed head or bill flat.

Care Notes

This crochet doll is best used as a decorative handmade item. Because it includes small appliqués, buttons, bag details, and tiny props, it is not recommended for babies or children under three years old unless all parts are embroidered and securely attached.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if you used felt, buttons, wire, or glued details.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the yarn colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and round.
  • The blue eye panels are even and symmetrical.
  • The bill is centered, layered, and slightly curved outward.
  • The striped shirt is visible beneath the jacket.
  • The sailor jacket has gold trim, buttons, and an anchor appliqué.
  • The arms hang naturally at the sides.
  • The long legs sit evenly and fit into the boat shoes.
  • The bag crosses the body diagonally and rests at the hip.
  • The crab and starfish are secure on top of the head.
  • The cap, lighthouse, and fish props complete the nautical scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the doll in a dry, dust-free area. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the jacket, hat, shoes, and tiny props. Avoid soaking the doll, because the stuffing may hold moisture and change the shape of the head, bill, and body.

If the doll becomes flattened during storage, gently reshape it with your hands. Add tissue paper around the bill and shoes while storing to help them keep their shape. Store small props such as the cap, lighthouse, fish, and starfish in a labeled pouch so they do not get lost.

When gifting the finished crochet doll, include a simple care note. Mention that the piece is handmade, should be spot cleaned only, and contains small sewn details. This helps the recipient enjoy the nautical duck display safely and beautifully for years.
