This whimsical carrot market fairy stand features a large carrot-shaped cart with round wheels, a scalloped green canopy, tiny vegetable baskets, paper-style crochet bags, a bunny shopkeeper, a small animal customer, mushrooms, sunflowers, a garden fence, stone path, crates, scale, flower trellis, and a grassy display base. The finished scene is detailed, playful, and perfect as a handmade spring market centerpiece.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Notes
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The project is made in many small parts, then assembled into one display. Work tightly so the stuffing does not show. For the cleanest result, use a smaller hook than your yarn label suggests.
The sample size is designed as a tabletop display. With sport or fine DK cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook, the finished base measures about 16 in long by 12 in wide. The carrot cart is about 12.5 in long, and the bunny shopkeeper is about 4.75 in tall.
Materials
- Sport weight cotton yarn in carrot orange, leaf green, grass green, dark green, brown, tan, cream, white, pink, red, yellow, gray, black, burgundy, and small amounts of extra flower colors.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for main pieces.
- 1.75 mm crochet hook for tiny vegetables, flowers, labels, and facial details.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Four 6 mm black safety eyes for the bunny and small customer, or embroidered eyes.
- Pipe cleaners, floral wire, or wooden skewers for canopy poles and flower stems.
- Cardboard or plastic canvas for the grassy base, carrot cart floor, canopy support, and crates.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, scissors, and fabric glue for tiny signs if desired.
- Optional: thin brown embroidery thread for wood lines, basket texture, and price tags.
Abbreviations
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec = invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- st = stitch
- rnd = round
- FO = fasten off
Gauge and Tension
Gauge is important because the market pieces need to sit correctly inside the carrot cart. In single crochet, 10 stitches and 11 rounds should measure about 1 inch with the 2.25 mm hook. If your carrot becomes soft or floppy, go down a hook size.
Stuff the carrot body firmly, but do not overstuff the pointed nose. The cart should look rounded and full, with a gentle hollow opening across the top. The baskets and vegetables are lightly stuffed or left flat depending on size.
Grass Display Base
The base is a rectangular green mat with a slightly raised edge. It supports the carrot cart, flower fence, mushroom patch, stone walkway, crates, and animals. Insert plastic canvas inside if you want the display to stay flat.
Base Panel
- With grass green yarn and 2.25 mm hook, ch 61.
- Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 60 sc.
- Rows 2-48: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 60 sc.
- Do not fasten off. Rotate to work around all four edges.

- Border rnd 2: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st around, placing 3 BLO sc in each corner center st. Join.
- Border rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join and FO, leaving a long tail to stitch around inserted plastic canvas if used.
Raised Grass Texture
- Attach grass green yarn to random front loops across the top surface.
- Make small tufts by working ch 4, sl st in same space.
- Repeat 35-45 tufts around the cart area, path edges, and fence corners.
- Keep the center under the carrot cart flatter so the cart sits level.
Large Carrot Cart Body
The carrot is the main structure. It is long, thick at the leafy end, and pointed at the front. The upper center is left open to hold baskets. The lower body remains stuffed and rounded like the photo.

Open Cart Top
The image shows an open carrot cart, not a fully closed carrot. To create this, shape an oval opening on top while keeping the sides high enough to hold the market baskets.
- Flatten the carrot lightly and mark the top center 22 stitches across from rnd 28 to rnd 40.
- Cut the working yarn after rnd 42, leaving a long tail.
- Using scissors, carefully open the marked top only if you are comfortable with cutting crochet. For a safer method, crochet the opening as described below.

- Rows 2-13: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 22 sc.

Assembly Order
- Block the grass base lightly by hand and let it dry flat.
- Sew the carrot cart to the center-left of the base, angled slightly from front-left to back-right.
- Attach the wheels to both sides of the carrot. The visible wheels should sit just above the grass.
- Sew the cart handle to the carrot nose and tack the lower curve to the base.
- Insert the four canopy poles. Sew their bottoms securely through the carrot and into the base.
- Curve the canopy gently and sew it to the pole tops. The scalloped edge should face the front.
- Sew baskets into the carrot opening before adding loose vegetables.
- Arrange carrots, tomatoes, beets, cabbages, leafy greens, and pumpkin inside the cart.
- Add price tags along the carrot front and basket rims.
- Place the bunny behind the left side of the cart, with the head visible under the canopy.
- Sew the small customer near the front path, facing the cart.
- Add crates, sign, scale, mushrooms, flowers, fence, trellis, birds, and stones around the base.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check every sewn part before trimming yarn tails. The bunny should have even black eyes, a small pink nose, and ears angled upward. The customer should face the market with the tote visible. Add tiny cheek stitches only if they do not crowd the face.
For the most accurate scene, keep the carrot cart slightly raised by the wheels, but still anchored to the grass base. The canopy poles should be vertical, while the canopy itself curves softly over the vegetable baskets.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with a damp cloth.
- Do not machine wash because the display includes wire, cardboard, and many sewn details.
- Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
- Store upright in a box with tissue around the canopy and flowers.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Carrot cart: pointed nose, rounded body, open top, rear leaves, handle, and wheels are secure.
- Canopy: four wrapped poles, scalloped green roof, and stable corners are finished.
- Market goods: baskets, carrots, tomatoes, beets, cabbage, pumpkin, greens, bags, and price tags are attached.
- Characters: bunny shopkeeper and small animal customer have clear faces and balanced bodies.
- Garden scene: fence, path stones, mushrooms, sunflowers, trellis, crates, sign, scale, and tiny animals are placed neatly.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Use a soft makeup brush to remove dust from the canopy, baskets, flowers, and vegetables. For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen a white cloth with cool water and press gently on the stained area. Do not rub small embroidered details.
To preserve the shape, place tissue inside the canopy curve and around the carrot cart during storage. Avoid stacking heavy objects on top of the display. If a pole bends, straighten it slowly with your fingers rather than pulling on the crochet fabric.
For long-term display, rotate the piece occasionally so one side does not receive all the light. Keep the project dry, especially around cardboard-supported sections. With careful handling, your Carrot Market Fairy Stand will stay bright, sturdy, and charming for many seasons.
