Crochet Tutorial: Princess Frog Garden Picnic Doll – Free Crochet Pattern.

This Princess Frog Garden Picnic Doll is a cheerful amigurumi project featuring a round green frog head, large white eyes, a golden crown with tiny flowers, a yellow striped shirt, blue overalls with red heart appliqués, long dangling legs, sandals, a red picnic backpack, a decorated blue sunhat, and a small garden picnic set with a basket and blanket.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm crochet hook, the finished seated doll measures about 12.5 inches from the crown tip to the sandal sole. The frog head is intentionally oversized, round, and expressive, while the body is smaller and dressed in fitted overalls. The accessories are scaled to sit beside the doll, just like a tiny garden picnic scene.

  • Doll height seated: about 12.5 inches including crown
  • Head width: about 4.25 inches
  • Body length: about 4.5 inches from neck to romper hem
  • Leg length: about 4 inches each
  • Red backpack: about 2.5 inches tall
  • Blue sunhat: about 4.5 inches wide across brim
  • Picnic blanket: about 4 inches square

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. Most pieces use single crochet in continuous rounds, simple increases, invisible decreases, and careful sewing. The details are small, but each piece is made with clear stitch counts so you can build the doll step by step.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in frog green, light green, white, black, golden yellow, pale yellow, sky blue, denim blue, red, tan, brown, cream, leaf green, flower blue, flower red, flower yellow, and sandal beige
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the doll
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for flowers, crown points, hearts, and small details
  • 8 mm black safety eyes for the large white eye pieces, or black embroidery/safety buttons

  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch

Gauge and Fabric Notes

For amigurumi, exact gauge is less important than firm fabric. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. With sport weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 6 sc across and 6 rounds high should measure about 1 inch. If your fabric looks loose, go down one hook size.

The doll in the image has smooth, compact crochet stitches with a firm rounded shape. Stuff the head and body evenly, but do not overstuff the arms, legs, sandals, backpack, or hat. Slightly softer limbs help the doll sit naturally on a bench or shelf.

General Construction Notes

  • Work in continuous spiral rounds unless a piece says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff each piece gradually as you crochet.
  • Use invisible decreases for a smooth amigurumi finish.
  • Leave long yarn tails on pieces that will be sewn on later.
  • The frog head is large and round. The body is narrower, with the overalls crocheted as a fitted outer layer.
  • The eyes sit high on the front of the head and touch each other slightly.
  • The crown sits centered between the eyes, slightly toward the back top of the head.
  • The arms hang down at the sides and the legs dangle from the romper hem.

Color Placement Guide

The main frog skin is soft olive green. Use a slightly lighter green for the belly or inner details if you want subtle contrast. The eyes are bright white with glossy black pupils. The shirt is pale yellow with white stripes, and the overalls are medium denim blue. The crown is golden yellow, the hearts and backpack are red, and the sunhat is sky blue with a narrow pale yellow band.

Frog Head

Use frog green yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. The head is a large oval sphere, wider through the cheeks and slightly narrowed at the neck opening.

Stuff the head firmly, keeping the cheeks round and the front smooth. Do not close the head yet. Leave a long tail for sewing to the neck and body later. The opening will attach directly to the body, so keep the last round flat and even.

Large White Eyes

Make 2 with white yarn. These eye pieces are oversized circles that create the wide surprised princess frog expression. Use the 2.25 mm hook.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4: (sc 2, inc) repeat 6 times. 24 sts.

  6. R6: sc in each st around. 30 sts.
  7. R7: (sc 3, dec) repeat 6 times. 24 sts.

Insert one black safety eye between R3 and R4 of each white eye circle, slightly below the center so the pupils look forward and a little downward. Stuff each white eye lightly. FO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Sewing the Eyes

Pin the eyes to the upper front of the frog head between R11 and R22. The inner edges should touch or overlap slightly, and the pupils should face forward. Sew around each eye using the white yarn tail. Keep the bottom edge gently raised so the eyes look rounded and alert.

Frog Mouth and Brow Details

The face in the image has a small concerned mouth and two curved brow lines above the snout area. Use black embroidery thread or black sport yarn split into thinner strands.

  • Place the mouth between R24 and R27 of the head, centered under the eyes.
  • Embroider a short shallow curve about 1 inch wide, shaped like a soft frown.
  • Add two tiny vertical stitches at each end of the mouth if you want a puckered look.
  • For the brow marks, embroider two curved lines above the mouth and below the eyes, each about 0.5 inch long.
  • Keep the expression gentle, not angry. The doll should look surprised and sweet.

Round Open Mouth Detail

The frog has a small black oval open mouth below the frown-like line. Make this as a separate black oval and sew it onto the face.

  1. With black yarn, ch 5.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 2, 3 sc in last ch, continue on other side of chain, sc 2, inc in last st. 10 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 2, inc 3 times, sc 2, inc 2 times. 16 sts.
  4. R3: sc in each st around. 16 sts.

FO and leave a tail. Sew the oval vertically between R27 and R31 of the head, centered below the embroidered line. Do not stuff. Stitch around the oval neatly so it lies flat and looks like a small surprised mouth.

Body Base

The frog body is slimmer than the head and mostly covered by the shirt and overalls. Start with pale yellow for the shirt area. Change colors as directed to create the yellow and white striped top visible above the blue overalls.

  1. R1: With pale yellow, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  4. R4: (sc 2, inc) repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
  5. R5: (sc 3, inc) repeat 6 times. 30 sts.
  6. R6: (sc 4, inc) repeat 6 times. 36 sts.
  7. R7: BLO sc in each st around. 36 sts.
  8. R8: With white, sc in each st around. 36 sts.

  11. R11: With pale yellow, sc in each st around. 36 sts.
  12. R12: With pale yellow, (sc 4, dec) repeat 6 times. 30 sts.
  13. R13: With white, sc in each st around. 30 sts.
  14. R14: With pale yellow, (sc 3, dec) repeat 6 times. 24 sts.
  15. R15: With pale yellow, sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  16. R16: (sc 2, dec) repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  17. R17: sc in each st around. 18 sts.

Stuff the body firmly at the bottom and lightly near the neck. FO, leaving a long tail. The neck opening should fit inside the head opening. The head is intentionally much larger, so sew slowly and evenly to keep it centered.

Blue Overalls Main Romper

The overalls sit over the shirt and cover the lower body. Use denim blue yarn. You will crochet a fitted romper shell from the waist downward, then add bib, straps, leg cuffs, and heart patches.

Overall Waist and Shorts

  1. Ch 36, sl st to first ch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist.
  2. R1: ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc. 36 sts.

  5. R7-R20: sc in each st around. 6 sts.

Stuff only the hand area lightly. Leave the upper arm mostly unstuffed so it hangs naturally. Flatten the top and sc through both layers with 3 sc. FO, leaving a tail for sewing.

Sew the arms to the sides of the body at R14-R16 of the shirt, just below the neck area. Angle them downward so the hands rest near the sides of the blue shorts.

Blue Sandal Strap

Make 2 with denim blue yarn.

  1. Ch 11.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across. 10 sts.
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 10 sts.

Red Check Lines

Using red yarn and a yarn needle, embroider vertical lines every 4 stitches and horizontal lines every 4 rows. Keep the lines straight but not too tight. This creates the red picnic check pattern shown on the blanket.

Small Picnic Basket

The basket is tan with a rounded body and a handle. It holds tiny fruit pieces, including a red strawberry-like piece and small green leaves.

Basket Body

  1. With tan yarn, ch 9.
  2. R1: sc in second ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch, continue on other side, sc 6, inc in last st. 18 sts.

FO and weave in the end. Stuff very lightly or leave hollow. Flatten the base so it sits upright on the blanket.

Basket Handle

  1. With tan yarn, ch 21.
  2. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and across. 20 sts.

Sew one end of the handle to each side of the basket. Curve it upward like a picnic handle. For a stiffer handle, hold a thin floral wire along the chain and crochet around it.

Tiny Strawberry

  2. R2: (sc 1, inc) repeat 3 times. 9 sts.
  3. R3: sc in each st around. 9 sts.

Picnic Daisy Appliqué

The blanket has a small white daisy detail with a yellow center. Make one daisy and sew it to a corner of the blanket.

  1. With yellow yarn, make 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO.
  2. Join white yarn to any stitch.
  3. Petal: ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, hdc, dc, sl st into next yellow st.
  4. Repeat until you have 6 petals.
  5. FO and sew the daisy to the blanket corner.

Optional Garden Leaf Sprig

The accessories have a soft garden feeling. A small leaf sprig can be sewn near the picnic blanket, hat flowers, or basket.

  1. With leaf green, ch 12.
  2. Sl st in second ch from hook.
  3. Ch 5, sl st in second ch, sc, hdc, dc, sl st back into main chain.
  4. Sl st 2 along the main chain.
  5. Ch 5, sl st in second ch, sc, hdc, dc, sl st back into main chain.
  6. Continue to the end and FO.

Sew the sprig wherever you want extra garden detail. Keep it small so it does not compete with the crown flowers or sunhat flowers.

Joining the Head and Body

Place the body neck opening inside the head opening. The head should face forward with the eyes centered over the bib. Use green yarn and sew through both layers around the neck. Go around twice for strength because the head is large.

After the first sewing round, check that the doll can sit without the head leaning too far forward. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck if needed. The finished pose should look upright but relaxed, like the frog is seated on a garden bench.

Attaching the Overalls and Clothing Details

  • Pull the blue romper up around the lower body and align the bib to the front.
  • Tack the romper waist to the body with small hidden blue stitches.
  • Sew the bib flat against the shirt.
  • Attach the straps from the bib over the shoulders and down to the back waist.
  • Sew tan buttons to the front strap ends.
  • Add the red hearts after the overalls are firmly positioned.
  • Make sure the yellow striped shirt remains visible at the shoulders, sleeves, and upper chest.

Positioning the Arms and Legs

Sew the arms on after the overalls are in place. The sleeves should sit between the arms and the body, with the green hands pointing downward. The arms should not stick outward. They should hang softly beside the frog, matching the calm seated pose.

Sew the legs under the romper openings. Add a few hidden stitches between the inner thighs if the legs spread too widely. The feet and sandals should point forward, with the toe bumps visible over the sandal soles.

Adding the Crown, Hat, Backpack, and Picnic Set

The crown is sewn directly to the head. The hat and backpack are separate props that sit beside the doll. This keeps the display flexible and helps the accessories look natural in a garden picnic scene.

  • Sew the crown to the top center of the frog head, slightly behind the eyes.
  • Add the crown flowers on the right side from the viewer’s perspective.
  • Place the blue sunhat beside the backpack, brim tilted slightly.
  • Set the red backpack upright near the doll’s hand.
  • Place the picnic blanket to the opposite side with the basket on top.
  • Arrange the daisy appliqué and fruit pieces so the blanket looks full but not crowded.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face from the front before securing any final knots. The white eyes should be large, close together, and slightly raised. The black pupils should look balanced. The embroidered brow marks and mouth should sit centered beneath the eyes, with the black oval mouth below.

Use small shaping stitches if needed. Insert the needle at the back of the head, come out near the inner side of one eye, pull gently, then return to the back. Repeat on the other eye. This can create a subtle eye socket and help the expression look more like the image.

Trim no yarn tails until you are happy with the full pose. Once everything is aligned, weave all tails deeply inside the body and head. Gently roll the head between your palms to smooth the stuffing.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the doll has buttons, cardboard supports, wire, or a metal charm.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep away from strong sunlight to protect the yarn colors.
  • This doll is intended as a decorative handmade item, especially if small buttons are used.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, large, and firmly stuffed.
  • The white eyes touch slightly and sit high on the face.
  • The golden crown is centered and decorated with small flowers and leaves.
  • The shirt stripes are visible above the overalls.
  • The blue overall bib has a red heart at the center.
  • The shorts have a second small red heart near the lower front.
  • The arms hang downward naturally.
  • The legs dangle evenly and the sandals face forward.
  • The red backpack has a flap, button, pocket, straps, and bee charm.
  • The blue sunhat has a wide brim, yellow trim, and flower cluster.
  • The picnic blanket, basket, fruit, and daisy complete the garden picnic scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the doll’s rounded shape, avoid soaking it for long periods. If dust collects on the crown, flowers, hat brim, or backpack charm, use a soft dry brush first. For small stains, dab gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, then blot with a clean towel.

Store the doll sitting upright, not compressed in a tight box. Place tissue paper around the crown points, backpack flap, and hat brim if storing for a long time. Keep the picnic accessories together in a small fabric pouch so the tiny fruit and flowers do not get lost.

If the doll is displayed outdoors for photos, bring it back inside afterward. Cotton yarn can absorb moisture from wooden tables, grass, or garden benches. Let the doll dry fully in a shaded area before placing it back on a shelf.

Finishing Thought

Your Princess Frog Garden Picnic Doll is complete when the frog sits sweetly with her crown, overalls, sandals, picnic blanket, basket, red backpack, and blue flowered sunhat arranged around her. The charm of this project comes from the oversized eyes, gentle expression, and many tiny handmade garden details.
