Crochet Tutorial: Frog Lily Pad Potion Shop Suitcase – Crochet.

This free crochet pattern creates a tiny pond potion shop inside a soft suitcase display. The scene includes a brown crochet suitcase, turquoise pond floor, upright shop wall, round moonlit pond window, shelves of colorful potion bottles, a friendly green frog wearing a lavender apron, a small worktable, cauldron, candle, recipe book, lily pads, pink water lilies, mushrooms, vines, fireflies, and the “Tiny Pond Potions” sign.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This project is worked as a structured amigurumi diorama. The suitcase base is made first, then the upright back panel is attached so the piece opens like a little display shop. The frog, furniture, potion bottles, lily pads, flowers, and small accessories are made separately and sewn into place.

Use tight stitches so the suitcase walls stand firmly and the small accessories keep their shape. For the cleanest result, block the flat panels lightly before assembly and use plastic canvas or thin cardboard inside the suitcase panels.

Skill Level

Intermediate. Confident beginners can complete this project if they are comfortable with single crochet, increasing, decreasing, sewing amigurumi pieces together, working flat panels, and embroidering small details.

Finished Size

  • Suitcase open display: about 10.5 in wide, 8 in deep, and 8.5 in tall.
  • Frog doll: about 4.75 in tall.
  • Worktable: about 3.5 in wide and 2 in tall.
  • Largest lily pad: about 3 in across.
  • Potion bottles: about 0.75 to 1.25 in tall.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in warm brown, tan, aqua, dark teal, green, light green, olive green, lavender, gray, cream, white, yellow, pink, magenta, purple, orange, blue, and cork beige.
  • Small amounts of black embroidery thread for the frog mouth.
  • White embroidery thread for the sign lettering and recipe book lines.
  • Yellow embroidery thread or small yellow yarn scraps for fireflies.
  • 3 mm crochet hook for the main pieces.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for tiny bottles, flowers, labels, and fine details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas, thin craft foam, or clean cardboard for the suitcase base, lid, shelves, and table top.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes for the frog eye domes.
  • Small yarn needle and sewing pins.
  • Optional: two tiny metal latches, one small suitcase clasp, and two metal rings for the handle.
  • Optional: fabric glue for securing miniature accessories after sewing.

Gauge

With 3 mm hook and worsted yarn, 8 sc and 8 rows should measure about 1 in. Gauge is not critical for the tiny accessories, but the suitcase must be firm. If your stitches look loose, go down a hook size.

  • Stuff the frog firmly, but do not overstuff the tiny bottles or mushrooms.
  • For the suitcase, work with a tight, even tension and insert plastic canvas before closing the panels.
  • Leave long tails on small decorations so they can be sewn securely to the pond floor.

The suitcase exterior and inner walls are warm brown. The pond floor is bright aqua. The round window scene is dark teal with green hanging vines and small yellow fireflies. The frog is light green with darker green arms and legs. The apron is pale lavender with a small front pocket. Shelves and table are tan-brown. 📌Thank you for reading the article

Cut a piece of plastic canvas to match the inside of the bottom panel. Place it against the wrong side. Crochet a second identical brown panel if you want a completely covered underside. Sew or sc the two panels together around the edge with the plastic canvas inside.

Suitcase Side Walls

The walls are worked upward from the bottom tray to create the raised suitcase rim visible around the pond floor.

  1. Join warm brown yarn in any corner of the bottom panel.
  2. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 1 sc in BLO of each border stitch around. Join with sl st. This creates the sharp fold line.
  3. Rnds 2-10: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join each rnd with sl st. Keep the corners square by gently pinching them as you work.
  4. Rnd 11: Ch 1, reverse sc around the top edge for a firm rounded lip. Join and fasten off.

The finished tray should look like a shallow open suitcase bottom. The front edge is closest to the viewer. The back edge will later hold the upright lid panel.

Turquoise Pond Floor Insert

Use aqua yarn and 3 mm hook.

  1. Ch 47.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. You will have 46 sc.
  3. Rows 2-32: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
  4. Border: Ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join and fasten off.

Place the aqua floor inside the suitcase tray. Sew it down with small stitches around all four sides. Leave the raised brown rim visible, just like the picture.

Front Handle

Use warm brown yarn.

  1. Ch 24.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. You will have 23 sc.
  3. Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc across.
  4. Fold the strip lengthwise and sc through both long edges to form a padded handle.
  5. Sew one end to the front left side of the suitcase and the other end to the front right side, leaving a soft arch in the middle.

Add two small brown tabs behind the handle by crocheting two rectangles: ch 5, sc 4 across for 4 rows. Sew one tab over each handle end.

  • Make 2 small latch bases: ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across for 6 sc. Work 3 rows. Fasten off.
  • Make 1 center clasp base: ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across for 5 sc. Work 4 rows. Fasten off.
  • Sew the two latch bases near the handle tabs and the clasp base at the front center.
  • Use tan yarn to add tiny straight stitches as metal highlights.

  4. Border: Ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join and fasten off.

Make a second identical panel. Cut plastic canvas slightly smaller than the crocheted panel. Place the canvas between the two panels and sew them together around all edges. This creates the firm upright suitcase lid.

Rounded Lid Edge

Join warm brown yarn at the lower left corner of the lid panel.

  1. Rnd 1: Sc evenly around the entire panel, placing 3 sc at each corner.
  2. Rnd 2: Sc around again. At each corner, work sc, hdc, sc into the center corner stitch to soften the shape.
  3. Rnd 3: Reverse sc around the outside edge for the raised suitcase border.

Sew the lower edge of the lid panel to the back wall of the suitcase tray. Sew through both layers several times so the lid stands upright at a 90-degree angle.

  3. Sew the two shelves to the left side of the lid. Add all shelf bottles.
  4. Sew the frog to the left-center of the pond floor, slightly in front of the shelves.
  5. Sew the table to the right-center floor, under the round window.
  6. Attach the cauldron, clear bottle, candle, recipe book, and stirring cord to the tabletop.
  7. Sew the large lily pads to the front left and the medium pad to the front right.
  8. Sew one water lily on the left lily pad and one on the right lily pad.
  9. Sew mushroom clusters to the front corners and near the table legs.
  10. Add the front handle, latch tabs, and center clasp to the suitcase exterior.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the frog’s head position before final stitching. The eyes should sit high on the head, with the black safety eyes facing forward. The mouth should be a gentle curved line, not too low. Add two tiny dark green stitches at the cheeks if you want extra expression.

Sew all accessories securely, especially the bottles, candle, mushrooms, and table. The diorama should be able to sit open without loose pieces shifting. Add extra hidden stitches behind the frog and under the table legs for strength.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash because the suitcase contains stiff inner supports.
  • Keep away from heavy moisture, direct sunlight, and rough handling.
  • Let the piece air dry fully before storing.

  • The round pond window is centered on the right side of the lid.
  • The shelves hold colorful bottles on the left side.
  • The frog wears the lavender apron with pocket and straps.
  • The table includes the cauldron, clear bottle, candle, recipe book, and stirring cord.

  • The front suitcase handle and latch details are attached firmly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft dry brush to remove dust from the shelves, frog face, lily pads, and tabletop accessories. Work slowly around the tiny bottles and flowers so the stitches do not stretch.

For small stains, dampen a clean cloth with cool water and gently press the stained area. Do not rub the surface. After cleaning, reshape the damp crochet with your fingers and allow it to dry naturally.

Store the suitcase open on a shelf or inside a breathable storage box. Avoid crushing the frog, table, and window vines. If storing long term, place acid-free tissue around the flowers and mushrooms to protect their shape.

Your Frog Lily Pad Potion Shop Suitcase is now complete, with a cozy pond floor, a tiny potion-making table, glowing window fireflies, shelves of colorful bottles, and a sweet apron-wearing frog ready to welcome visitors to the miniature shop.
