This cheerful crochet suitcase diorama features a soft yellow hamster wearing an olive green cardigan, standing inside a brown portable grocery shop. The scene includes a blue and white checkered floor, wall shelves filled with milk bottles, eggs, bread, jam, apples, cereal boxes, carrots, vegetables, paper bags, a tiny checkout counter, cash register, shopping basket, receipt, and a miniature rolling grocery cart.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Free Crochet Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi and miniature diorama project. The finished piece recreates a small open suitcase grocery market with a hamster shopper, a tiny cart, store shelving, checkout area, and many removable or stitched-in grocery details.
The suitcase is worked as a sturdy brown base with softly rounded corners. The back wall stands upright and holds the market shelves. The floor uses a blue and white checker pattern to match the picture. Most small objects are crocheted separately, then sewn or glued in place after blocking and shaping.
Finished size: approximately 10 in wide, 7 in deep, and 8 in tall when using worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. The hamster is about 4.5 in tall. The tiny cart is about 3 in long, 2 in wide, and 2.5 in high including the handle.
Skill Level
Intermediate. A confident beginner can make this project by working slowly and checking stitch counts. The project uses basic amigurumi shaping, flat panels, color changes, tiny applique pieces, simple embroidery, and careful assembly.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in warm brown for the suitcase shell and handle.
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in cream for the back wall.
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in light blue and white for the checkered floor.
- Worsted weight yarn in pale yellow, cream, pale pink, olive green, black, gray, tan, beige, red, orange, green, dark blue, and small amounts of assorted food colors.
- 3.0 mm crochet hook for firm amigurumi stitches.
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for small grocery details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Plastic canvas or thin cardboard for suitcase, shelves, cart basket, and counter support.
- Two 8 mm black safety eyes for the hamster.
- Black embroidery thread for clock numbers, cart holes, facial details, and price tags.
- Pink embroidery thread for nose and mouth.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, sewing pins, and fabric-safe glue if desired.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec = invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- st = stitch
- R = round or row
- FO = fasten off
Gauge and Texture Notes
Gauge is not critical, but firm stitches are important. For amigurumi pieces, use a hook small enough that stuffing does not show. For the suitcase panels, the stitches should be dense and slightly stiff. This helps the diorama stand open like the picture.
For the image-like texture, keep the brown suitcase border thick and rounded. The wall and floor should look like flat crochet fabric. Shelves should be narrow but strong. Food pieces should be small, bright, and slightly oversized for a cute miniature grocery market style.
Color Plan
- Suitcase: medium warm brown with darker brown edge optional.
- Back wall: cream.
- Floor: light blue and white checkers.
- Hamster: pale yellow head and body, cream muzzle and belly, pink paws and ears.
- Cardigan: olive green.
- Cart: light gray basket, black wheels, pale tan handle.
- Checkout counter: tan front, pale blue top, gray register, navy register base.
Suitcase Base
The suitcase base is the brown lower box that holds the market floor. It has high sides, rounded front corners, and a soft handle centered on the front. Work tightly so the base keeps its shape.

- Place one red apple or tomato near the front right.
- Place one cream round vegetable near the center.
- Use small hidden stitches so the cart still looks neat from the front.
Extra Small Shelf Details
To make the diorama match the image, add small fillers between the main items. Use tiny crocheted balls, short rectangles, and embroidered labels. These details make the grocery wall look busy and realistic without needing complicated shaping.

- Make 1 tiny green bunch by tying three leafy pieces together at the base.
Assembly Layout
Before sewing everything permanently, place all pieces inside the suitcase and check the balance. The hamster should stand on the left front side. The cart should sit in the center, angled slightly to the right. The checkout counter should be on the right side.
- Sew the checkered floor into the suitcase base first.
- Sew the cream back wall to the rear edge of the suitcase base.
- Sew the shelves to the wall in three horizontal lines.
- Add the Mini Market sign, clock, price tags, and paper bags above the shelves.
- Sew grocery items onto shelves, keeping heavier pieces low.
- Sew the checkout counter on the right side of the floor.
- Attach the cash register, basket, and receipt to the counter.
- Sew the hamster feet to the floor if you want the figure fixed in place.
- Position the cart in front of the hamster and sew the wheels lightly to the floor.
- Sew the hamster paws to the cart handle for the pushing pose.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew the hamster head to the body with the face angled slightly downward toward the cart. Add several strong stitches through the neck so the large head does not wobble. The ears should face forward and slightly outward.
Use pink thread to deepen the nose and mouth. Add two tiny blush stitches under the eyes if desired. With black thread, add a small shine stitch beside each safety eye only if the eyes need extra expression.
Check the cardigan after the arms are attached. The front opening should frame the cream belly. If the cardigan lifts away from the body, add two hidden stitches at the lower sides, but do not close the front.
Care Notes
Spot clean only. This project includes tiny pieces, cardboard support, embroidery, and shaped panels. Do not machine wash. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the shelves, groceries, and suitcase rim.
Keep the diorama away from direct sunlight for long periods. Bright colors like red apples, orange carrots, blue floor squares, and olive cardigan yarn may fade if stored near a sunny window.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The brown suitcase base stands flat and the handle is centered on the front.
- The cream wall is upright and framed with a thick brown border.
- The blue and white floor is sewn flat with neat checker squares.
- The Mini Market sign, clock, paper bags, and price tags are visible.
- The shelves hold milk, eggs, bread, jam, cereal, apples, carrots, and leafy greens.
- The hamster has a round head, cream muzzle, pink nose, tiny ears, cardigan, paws, and feet.
- The cart has a gray basket, handle, black wheels, and groceries inside.
- The checkout counter has a pale blue top, register, basket, and hanging receipt.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the project with a dry makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Work from the top wall downward so loose dust does not settle on finished areas. For small stains, dab gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, then press with a dry towel.
Store the suitcase open in a dry display area. If you need to pack it away, place tissue paper around the hamster, cart, register, shelves, and groceries. Do not press the lid wall down onto the miniatures unless the items are removable.
For long-term display, check the sewn joints every few months. Tighten the shelf stitches, cart wheels, and hamster paws if they loosen. Tiny handmade pieces stay beautiful longer when they are handled gently and supported from the base.
