Crochet Tutorial: Squirrel Acorn Post Office Suitcase – Crochet.

This cozy crochet suitcase diorama features a tiny autumn post office inside a brown travel case with cream walls, a front counter, red mailbox, hanging letters, mushrooms, acorns, string lights, scattered fall leaves, and a standing squirrel mail helper. The squirrel wears a green acorn cap, yellow scarf, and crossbody mail satchel filled with miniature envelopes.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Open suitcase: about 9.5 in wide, 7 in deep, and 7.5 in tall when open.
  • Squirrel: about 5.25 in tall, not including the raised ear tufts.
  • Front counter: about 6.5 in wide and 1.75 in tall.
  • Red mailbox: about 1.4 in wide and 2.4 in tall.
  • Scale: miniature amigurumi diorama, made with firm tension.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern uses simple amigurumi shapes, flat panels, surface crochet, embroidery, small appliques, and structured assembly. A confident beginner can make it slowly by finishing one section at a time. Most pieces are worked in single crochet with clear stitch counts.

Materials

  • Sport weight or DK cotton yarn in warm brown, dark brown, cream, tan, caramel, rusty orange, mustard yellow, olive green, moss green, red, black, white, beige, and small amounts of leaf colors.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the suitcase, panels, squirrel, and accessories.
  • 2.00 mm crochet hook for tiny leaves, envelopes, mushrooms, acorns, and facial details.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Plastic canvas, thin craft foam, or firm cardboard for the suitcase base, wall, counter, mailbox, shelf, and mail cart.
  • Two 7 mm black safety eyes or black beads for the squirrel.
  • Black and dark brown embroidery thread.
  • White sewing thread for sewing tiny appliques.
  • Yarn needle, sewing needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors.
  • Optional: fabric glue for flat decorations and tiny warm LED fairy lights for display only.

Yarn Colors Used in the Sample

  • Suitcase outside: medium warm brown.
  • Suitcase trim and handles: darker chocolate brown.
  • Interior walls and floor sides: cream.
  • Counter and baskets: tan and caramel.

  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not as important as firm tension. For the neat miniature look shown in the image, crochet tightly enough that stuffing and inner structure do not show through. As a guide, 10 sc and 10 rows should measure about 1.5 in with a 2.25 mm hook.

If your pieces are floppy, use a smaller hook. If your suitcase panels curl too much, block them lightly before assembly. The suitcase must be sturdy, because the wall decorations, counter, mailbox, and squirrel all need a firm base.

Construction Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless a row instruction is given.
  • Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
  • Stuff the squirrel firmly, but do not overstuff the arms, legs, ears, or tail.
  • For the suitcase, crochet panels first, then sandwich plastic canvas or craft foam between matching panels.
  • The diorama is decorative. If made for a child, omit beads, wire, glue, lights, and any small detachable pieces.

  • 1 tied parcel for the front center floor.
  • 2 small envelopes for the satchel.
  • 3 envelopes for the wall shelf.
  • 1 tied bundle inside the rolling cart.

Counter Stamp Pieces

The counter has small colorful stamp-like pieces. They are very tiny, so you can crochet them or embroider them directly onto the counter.

  1. For each stamp, ch 4 with red, green, or cream yarn.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 3 sc.
  3. Work 2 rows total.
  4. FO and sew to the counter.
  5. Use dark thread to add one small line on each stamp.
  6. Place 3 stamps near the left center of the counter.

String Lights

The image shows warm glowing lights along the upper wall. For a fully crocheted version, use tiny yellow knots sewn to a thin cream chain. For display only, you may also lay a battery LED strand around the lid edge.

Crocheted Light Cord

  1. Use cream yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Ch 70.
  2. FO, leaving tails at both ends.
  3. Pin the chain in a gentle curve across the upper cream wall.
  4. Sew down every 8 to 10 chains with tiny stitches.

  2. For each light, make 5 sc in MR, sl st to join, FO.
  3. Make 7 small light dots.
  4. Sew them evenly along the cord.
  5. For a glowing look, use one strand of pale yellow embroidery thread to stitch a small star shape around each dot.

Back Wall Placement Guide

Before sewing permanently, place every wall decoration on the cream lid. Use pins and step back to check the balance. The red mailbox should sit near the center-right, while the shelf should sit center-left. The squirrel will stand in front of the right wall.

  • Place the light cord near the top edge, slightly curved.
  • Sew the large rust leaf to the upper left wall.
  • Sew one acorn near the upper left, below the lights.
  • Sew the wall shelf to the left of the red mailbox.
  • Sew the red mailbox in the center, slightly lower than the shelf top.
  • Sew the calendar to the right upper wall.
  • Sew the stamp frame above or beside the calendar.
  • Sew the wall mushroom to the upper right area.
  • Add one small orange leaf between the mailbox and mushroom.

Floor Leaf Carpet

The bottom of the suitcase is filled with autumn leaves. Sew some flat and leave some edges loose for texture. Keep the center front area full, because the image shows a thick leafy floor under the counter, cart, and squirrel.

  1. Arrange the crocheted leaves across the cream floor, mixing colors randomly.
  2. Place darker leaves near the back and brighter mustard leaves near the front.
  3. Sew each leaf with 2 or 3 small stitches through the center vein only.
  4. Overlap a few leaves under the squirrel’s feet.
  5. Add one rust leaf partly under the rolling cart.
  6. Add one tan leaf near the front right corner.

Large Wall Leaf

The large orange leaf on the upper left wall is more detailed than the small floor leaves. It looks like a maple leaf with embroidered veins.

  1. Use rust-orange yarn and make one maple-style leaf, but start with ch 11 instead of ch 7.
  2. Work along the chain: sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sl st.
  3. Add three points on each side by working ch 3, sl st back, and sl st into nearby base stitches.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.
  5. With dark orange thread, embroider one center vein and four diagonal veins.
  6. Sew to the upper left wall.

Mini Postal Tags

Small white labels appear on the cart and parcels. These tags are simple but important because they make the scene read clearly as a post office.

  1. Use white yarn. Ch 5.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 4 sc.
  3. Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 4 sc.
  4. FO and weave in ends.
  5. With brown thread, embroider two tiny horizontal address lines.
  6. Sew one tag to the front of the rolling cart.
  7. Sew one tag to the tied parcel if desired.

Assembling the Squirrel

  1. Sew the head to the body with the muzzle facing forward and slightly downward.
  2. Sew the ears to the top sides of the head, then add ear tufts.
  3. Sew the arms at Round 15 of the body, angled gently downward.
  4. Sew the legs to the lower front body so the squirrel can stand with support.
  5. Sew the tail firmly to the back. Curve it upward and to the squirrel’s right side.
  6. Sew the green acorn cap onto the head at a diagonal angle.
  7. Wrap and secure the yellow scarf around the neck.
  8. Add the crossbody satchel and secure the strap at the shoulder.
  9. Place tiny letters inside the satchel after the bag is attached.

Installing the Squirrel in the Suitcase

The squirrel stands on the right side of the bottom tray, in front of the calendar and red mailbox. The tail should rest toward the back wall. Use strong stitches through the feet and lower body so the figure does not lean forward.

  1. Place the squirrel on the right side of the leaf-covered floor.
  2. Pin both feet to the floor.
  3. Check that the tail does not push the lid backward.
  4. Sew through each foot and into the suitcase floor 5 to 6 times.
  5. Add one hidden stitch from the back of the body or tail to the wall for extra stability.
  6. Adjust the satchel so it faces the viewer.

Arranging the Counter Area

The counter should sit in front of the wall decorations but behind the scattered floor objects. This creates the deep suitcase-room effect shown in the image. Keep the top of the counter neat, with just a few letters and a small basket.

  • Place the green basket on the left side of the counter.
  • Sew two tiny stamps near the front middle of the counter.
  • Add one white envelope near the center right.
  • Sew the rolling mail cart on the lower left floor, slightly in front of the counter.
  • Place the tied parcel near the front center of the leaves.
  • Place one loose white letter between the squirrel and the counter.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use dark brown embroidery thread to refine the squirrel’s face after the head is fully attached. Add a small triangular nose, one short mouth line, and two tiny cheek stitches if desired. Keep the expression soft, friendly, and slightly curious.

  • Check that both eyes are level before finishing the face.
  • Add a tiny white highlight beside each eye with white thread if you did not use glossy safety eyes.
  • Brush loose fibers away from the muzzle.
  • Secure all wall decorations with hidden stitches.
  • Make sure the suitcase lid can stay open without pulling the bottom tray.

Care Notes

This crochet suitcase diorama is best used as display decor. Keep it away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heavy handling. If you added LED lights, remove batteries when not in use and never wash the project with the lights attached.

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape the squirrel, tail, leaves, and handles gently with your fingers.
  • Store upright so the lid and handle do not flatten.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Suitcase bottom tray is firm and evenly shaped.
  • Back lid stands upright and is securely joined to the base.
  • Dark brown piping is visible around the edges.
  • Top and front handles are curved and padded.
  • Counter is sewn straight across the back of the floor.
  • Red mailbox has a black slot and black base.
  • Wall shelf contains tiny envelopes.
  • Calendar grid is embroidered clearly.
  • Squirrel has cap, scarf, satchel, tail, and facial details.
  • Leaves, mushrooms, acorns, parcels, stamps, and lights are attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the miniature details, dust the piece with a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Work gently around the string lights, wall shelf, and tiny letters. Avoid pulling loose leaf edges because they are meant to create layered texture.

If the diorama becomes misshapen during storage, place clean tissue inside the suitcase tray and behind the squirrel for a few hours. This supports the shape without flattening the stitches. Keep the project in a dry box when not displayed.

For long-term display, avoid strong sunlight because red, green, and yellow yarns can fade. If the suitcase has a plastic canvas structure, do not place heavy objects on top of it. A clear display case is ideal for keeping dust away while showing the post office scene.

Finishing Thought

Your Squirrel Acorn Post Office Suitcase is complete when the scene feels full but not crowded: a warm brown suitcase, cream post office wall, red mailbox, autumn floor, and one cheerful squirrel ready to deliver tiny woodland letters.
