This cozy crochet scene creates a round garden reading nook with a hollow tree cottage, leafy green roof, white flowers, glowing round window, hanging lanterns, bookshelves, ferns, mushrooms, stepping stones, a tiny table, and two sweet owl friends. One owl sits in a soft armchair reading a book with round glasses, while the second owl carries a tray with tea and cookies.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished piece is designed as a detailed tabletop cottage garden display. With sport or DK cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook, the finished base measures about 11 inches wide, and the cottage stands about 7 inches tall before the roof flowers.
The pattern uses tight amigurumi stitches, flat appliqué pieces, joined rounds, and small sewn details. Most pieces are worked in continuous rounds unless stated otherwise. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round, stuff firmly but not harshly, and shape the cottage as you sew.
Skill Level
- Level: Intermediate amigurumi with many small accessories.
- Best for: Crocheters comfortable with magic rings, increases, decreases, sewing, embroidery, and small shaped pieces.
- Main techniques: Single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, back-loop work, front-loop texture, flat circles, oval shaping, and tiny appliqué construction.
Finished Size
- Garden base: About 11 inches across.
- Tree cottage: About 5 inches wide and 6.5 inches tall without flowers.
- Leaf roof: About 7.5 inches across after shaping.
- Brown reading owl: About 3 inches tall seated.
- Gray tea owl: About 2.75 inches tall.
- Bookshelves: About 3.25 inches tall each.
- Chair: About 2.75 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall.

Gauge
Gauge is not strict, but tight stitches are important. With DK cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 10 sc should measure about 1 inch. If your stitches show stuffing, go down a hook size. If the cottage becomes too stiff to shape, go up slightly.
Important Construction Notes
- Work the garden base first so you can place all pieces correctly.
- The tree cottage is a tall cylinder with a slightly wider lower body and a dark shadow line under the roof.
- The roof is made from a domed green cap plus layered individual leaves around the edge.
- The glowing window is made with a yellow circle and brown crossbars. Add a battery light behind it only if the piece will be displayed safely.
- All tiny accessories are sewn to the base after the main cottage, owls, shelves, chair, ferns, mushrooms, and stones are complete.
1. Round Garden Base
Use dark forest green yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. The base should look like a thick crochet grass mat with a slightly raised edge. Work in joined rounds if you want a very flat circle, or continuous rounds if you prefer a softer amigurumi look.

- Place the open book on the grass in front of the chair.
- Place the stacked books near the gray owl and right mushroom group.
- Hang lanterns from the left and right underside of the roof.
22. Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the tree cottage firmly to the base using warm brown yarn. Stitch around the bottom edge twice so the cottage does not wobble.
- Sew the roof to the top of the cottage, making sure the scalloped leaf edge covers the dark shadow band slightly.
- Sew all roof leaves and white flowers securely. Keep flowers raised by sewing only through their centers.
- Sew the chair to the left front area. Then secure the brown owl into the chair.
- Sew the gray owl on the right side. Attach the tray to its wings and body so it sits level.
- Sew shelves behind the owls. Add a few hidden stitches from shelves to cottage sides for strength.
- Sew ferns, mushrooms, framed circles, stones, books, and table to the base.
- Use black thread to refine owl pupils, mouth dots, and glasses position.
- Add tiny brown straight stitches on the cottage body to create bark texture.
- Add short green stitches on the base around the cottage for grass texture.
Facial detailing tip: Keep both owls gentle and symmetrical. The eyes should be large and round, the beaks small, and the wings angled forward. This gives the same quiet reading-nook feeling as the image.
23. Optional Warm Window Light
For a glowing window like the picture, place a tiny warm battery light inside or behind the cottage before sewing it fully to the base. Keep the switch accessible from the back or underside. Use only low-heat battery lights and never leave the display unattended while lit.
- Do not use plug-in lights inside the crochet piece.
- Do not use hot bulbs.
- Keep batteries removable.
- Turn the light off before storing the cottage.
Care Notes
Spot clean only. Use a slightly damp cloth and gentle pressure. Do not soak the cottage because the cardboard or plastic canvas inserts may bend. Let the piece air dry fully before placing it back on a shelf.
Keep the garden cottage away from direct sunlight for long periods. Green, brown, and pink yarns can fade if displayed in strong sun. If the piece includes battery lights, remove the batteries before long-term storage.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The garden base lies flat and the outer rim is even.
- The cottage stands upright at the back center of the base.
- The tan round door is centered under the glowing window.
- The green roof is rounded, leafy, and slightly wider than the trunk.
- White flowers are grouped across the roof, with one small flower on the trunk vine.
- Both lanterns hang evenly from the roof edge.
- The brown owl has glasses, a book, wings, feet, and a speckled belly.
- The gray owl has a tray, teacup, cookies, wings, and large pale eyes.
- Bookshelves are filled with colorful tiny books.
- Ferns, mushrooms, stones, table, open book, and stacked books are sewn securely.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the piece with a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Work from the roof downward so dust does not settle into the flowers and leaves. For small spaces around bookshelves and lanterns, use gentle taps instead of rubbing.
If a flower, leaf, or tiny book becomes loose, repair it with matching yarn and a small yarn needle. Avoid glue when possible, because sewn details last longer and keep the soft handmade texture of the design.
Store the cottage in a breathable cotton bag or a clean box with tissue paper around the roof flowers. Do not press heavy items on top. The roof, ferns, lanterns, and mushrooms should have enough space to keep their shape.
Your Owl Reading Nook Garden Cottage is complete. The finished display should feel like a tiny woodland library scene, with two cozy owl friends, glowing cottage warmth, soft flowers, leafy roof texture, and many miniature garden details to discover from every angle.
