Crochet Tutorial: Fox Woodland Mail Delivery Suitcase – Free Crochet Pattern

This charming crochet project creates a woodland mail delivery scene inside an open suitcase. The design features a tiny fox post carrier wearing a green vest, matching cap, cream scarf strap, and golden mail satchel. The suitcase includes a mail counter, parcels, envelopes, red mailbox, rolling mail cart, wall calendar, clock, map, hanging bag, leaves, pencil case, and warm fairy-light edging.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate amigurumi and miniature scene pattern. Confident beginners can follow it by working slowly, counting every round carefully, and pinning each piece before sewing. Most pieces use single crochet, increases, decreases, flat rows, simple embroidery, and shaped appliques.

Finished Size

  • Open suitcase: about 10 in wide, 7 in deep, and 7 in tall when opened.
  • Fox mail carrier: about 4.75 in tall.
  • Mail counter: about 3.75 in wide and 1.75 in tall.
  • Rolling mail cart: about 2.25 in wide.
  • Small accessories: about 0.5 to 2 in each.

Materials

  • Sport or DK cotton yarn in warm brown, dark brown, cream, beige, rust orange, white, black, olive green, mustard yellow, red, tan, gray, pale blue, pale green, and small accent colors.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the suitcase and furniture.
  • 2.00 mm crochet hook for the fox and tiny accessories.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas or firm cardboard for the suitcase panels and mail counter.
  • 8 mm safety eyes for the fox.
  • 4 mm black safety nose or black embroidery thread.
  • Embroidery thread in black, brown, green, red, and white.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, scissors.
  • Optional warm micro LED string lights for display only.
  • Optional small buttons, 6 to 8 mm, for bag closures and handle accents.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

With a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc and 8 rows should measure about 1 inch. Gauge matters for this scene because the accessories need to fit inside the suitcase. Use tight, even stitches so the panels stay firm and the small pieces keep their shape.

Pattern Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the instruction says to turn.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff the fox head, body, muzzle, tail, and feet firmly but not so tightly that the stitches stretch.
  • Flat suitcase pieces are worked in rows and reinforced with plastic canvas or firm cardboard.
  • Leave long yarn tails on small items for sewing them into the scene.
  • For a neat miniature display, block flat pieces lightly before assembly.

Color Layout

The main suitcase is warm brown with cream edging and darker brown interior sides. The inside back wall is beige, giving it a soft cork-board look. The fox is rust orange with a white muzzle, white cheeks, black paws, a green vest, green cap, and mustard mail satchel.

The mailroom details are small and colorful. The red standing mailbox sits on the right back wall area. A tan mail basket and a brown wall pocket hold letters. The counter is light beige. The rolling cart is rust brown with cream mail, black wheels, and tan handles.

Open Suitcase Base

Bottom Suitcase Panel

Use warm brown yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. This piece forms the flat floor where the fox, desk, cart, parcels, leaves, and stationery sit.

  1. Ch 59.
  2. R1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 58 sc.
  3. R2-R44: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 58 sc.
  4. R45: Ch 1, sc in each st across. FO, leaving a long tail.

Cut one piece of plastic canvas slightly smaller than the crocheted rectangle, about 7.1 in by 5.4 in. Place it behind the panel later, before closing the underside. This gives the suitcase floor the sturdy, flat look seen in the image.

Bottom Outer Cover

Make a second rectangle exactly the same as the bottom suitcase panel in warm brown. Do not fasten off after R45. Place the two rectangles wrong sides together with the plastic canvas between them.

  1. Ch 1, sc evenly through both layers around all four sides.
  2. Work 3 sc in each corner to keep the rectangle square.
  3. Join with sl st to the first sc.
  4. FO and weave in the end.

Bottom Raised Side Wall

The front and side rim of the suitcase should stand about 1.25 in high. Use warm brown yarn.

  1. Join yarn in the back left corner of the bottom panel.
  2. R1: Work 58 sc across the front long edge, 42 sc along the right short edge, 58 sc along the back edge, and 42 sc along the left short edge. Join with sl st. 200 sc.
  3. R2: Ch 1, BLO sc in each st around. Join. 200 sc.
  4. R3-R10: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. 200 sc.
  5. R11: Ch 1, reverse sc around for a corded rim. Join and FO.

The suitcase edge in the image is thick and rounded. If your wall feels soft, cut narrow strips of plastic canvas and slide them inside the wall before sewing the inner lining. The side wall should lean only slightly outward, not collapse.

Cream Front Lip Edging

Use cream yarn to make the raised cream border around the open suitcase lip.

  1. Join cream yarn at the left back corner.
  2. R1: Surface sl st around the top edge of the suitcase wall.
  3. R2: Ch 1, sc in each surface sl st around, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join.
  4. R3: Sl st in each st around for a firm braided look. FO.

Back Suitcase Wall and Lid

Back Wall Panel

Use beige yarn. This is the upright mailroom wall with the words Forest Mail, the clock, calendar, map, hanging mailbag, and wall basket.

  1. Ch 61.
  2. R1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. 60 sc.
  3. R2-R48: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 60 sc.
  4. R49: Ch 1, sc in each st across. FO.

Cut plastic canvas about 7.3 in wide and 6 in tall. Make a second beige rectangle the same size. Sandwich the canvas between both beige pieces and sc around through both layers with beige yarn, placing 3 sc in each corner.

Brown Lid Frame

The outer lid is warm brown and wraps around the beige wall like a suitcase shell. Use warm brown yarn.

  1. Ch 69.
  2. R1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 68 sc.
  3. R2-R56: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 68 sc.
  4. R57: Ch 1, sc in each st across. FO.

Place the reinforced beige wall centered on the brown lid frame. There should be a brown border visible on the top and sides. Sew the beige wall to the brown lid using small whip stitches around the edge.

Cream Lid Border

Use cream yarn to create the soft raised trim around the upright lid.

  1. Join cream yarn at the bottom left corner of the lid.
  2. R1: Sc evenly around the lid edge, placing 3 sc in each corner.
  3. R2: Ch 1, sc in each st around.
  4. R3: Sl st in each st around. FO.

Joining Lid to Base

Place the lid behind the bottom suitcase base, with the beige wall facing forward. The lid should stand open at about a 95 degree angle. Use a long strand of warm brown yarn to sew the bottom edge of the lid to the back edge of the base.

  1. Pin the center first.
  2. Sew from the center to the left corner using tight whip stitches.
  3. Return to the center and sew to the right corner.
  4. Reinforce the seam with a second pass through the same stitches.

To help the lid stay upright, sew two short cream side hinges from the inside side wall to the lid, one on each side. Each hinge is made by chaining 18, working 17 sc back across, and sewing it diagonally in place.

Suitcase Handle

The handle is cream and sits centered on the front outside wall. It arches softly and has round attachment tabs at both ends.

Handle Strap

  1. Use cream yarn. Ch 35.
  2. R1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 34 sc.
  3. R2-R4: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 34 sc.

Assembly Layout

Before sewing everything permanently, place every item inside the suitcase and compare the layout with the image. The mail counter belongs on the left floor area. The fox stands slightly right of center. The red mailbox is on the right back wall. The cart sits at the front right.

  1. Sew the mail counter to the left side of the floor, leaving space in front for the large parcel.
  2. Sew the fox to the floor at the center-right. Use stitches through both feet and the tail base.
  3. Sew the red mailbox to the right back wall.
  4. Sew the wall basket under the map and slightly left of the mailbox.
  5. Sew the hanging mail bag near the center-left wall.
  6. Sew the small pocket under the calendar.
  7. Sew the chalkboard sign in front of the fox.
  8. Sew the cart to the front-right floor area.
  9. Add loose envelopes, leaves, pencil case, twine, stool, and paper last.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the fox head to the body with the muzzle facing forward and the hat brim centered above the eyes. Add small black eyebrow stitches if desired. Use white yarn to add cheek points along the lower sides of the face. Keep the expression soft and friendly.

Check the satchel strap after the head is attached. It should cross cleanly from shoulder to hip without covering the muzzle. Tack the letter to one paw and sew the paw lightly to the body so the fox looks like it is ready for delivery.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if cardboard, plastic canvas, glue, or lights are used.
  • Let the piece air dry fully before closing or storing.
  • Keep the suitcase open while drying so the wall and floor remain flat.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The suitcase lid stands upright at a neat open angle.
  • The cream edging is sewn smoothly around the rim.
  • The fox is firmly attached and does not tip forward.
  • The wall decorations are balanced: calendar left, clock center, map right.
  • The red mailbox, cart, parcels, envelopes, leaves, and tiny stationery are all visible.
  • The words Forest Mail are centered and readable.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished crochet suitcase in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Cotton yarn can fade if it sits in a bright window for many weeks. If you use real micro lights, remove batteries before storing and never leave the lights on unattended.

To preserve the miniature shape, place tissue paper under the suitcase lid during storage. Avoid stacking heavy items on top. If the fox or accessories bend slightly, reshape them gently with your fingers and allow the piece to rest open.

For dust removal, use a soft makeup brush or a low-suction handheld vacuum held several inches away. Brush around the envelopes, leaves, and wall details carefully so the tiny sewn pieces stay secure.
