Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as an amigurumi-style duck doll with firm shaping, rounded cheeks, a short orange bill, visible striped dress rows, separate accessories, and neat sewn details. Work tightly so the stuffing does not show through the stitches.

The finished doll is about 11 to 12 inches tall when made with light worsted yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. The size can change depending on your yarn, hook, and tension. Keep the same hook throughout the doll for matching proportions.

Skill Level

  • Advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • You should know how to work in continuous rounds, join rounds, increase, decrease, change colors, sew pieces, and make small appliques.
  • The dress uses simple color stripes, scallop edging, and small sunflower decorations.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: light worsted or DK cotton blend.
  • Main duck color: soft pale yellow.
  • Bill and legs: bright orange.
  • Dress blue: medium sky blue.

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not critical, but tight tension is important. A 2 inch square in single crochet should measure about 10 to 11 stitches across and 11 to 12 rounds tall. If gaps appear after stuffing, use a smaller hook.

The doll in the image has a smooth rounded head, thick compact stitches, and a firm body. Do not overstuff the neck area. The head should sit upright, and the bill should stay horizontal across the lower face.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work the head, body, arms, legs, bill, and accessories separately, then sew them together.
  • The dress is crocheted as a removable-looking garment, but it is sewn onto the body for stability.
  • Use pins before sewing every piece. Small angle changes affect the expression.
  • The eyes sit wide apart with long lashes, giving the duck a sweet garden doll look.
  • The sunflower dress appliques should be sewn evenly on the blue stripes.

Head

Use pale yellow yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds. Stuff gradually and firmly, especially around the cheeks and crown. The head should be large, round, and slightly wider than the body.

Insert the eyes between R15 and R16, about 12 stitches apart. The lower edge of each eye should sit slightly above the bill placement. Add blue eye rings before securing the eyes if your safety eyes are black.

Stuff the head firmly until it is round but not stretched. Leave the last 18 stitches open for sewing to the neck. Fasten off with a long tail. Do not close the head completely.

Blue Eye Rings

Use blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. Make two rings.

  1. Ch 12, join with sl st to form a ring.
  2. R1: ch 1, 18 sc evenly around the chain ring, sl st to first sc.
  3. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Place each blue ring behind the safety eye before locking it, or sew it around the eye if the eyes are already attached. The blue ring should show clearly around the black center.

Eyelashes and Eyebrows

Use black embroidery thread. For each eye, embroider 5 long lashes starting at the outside edge of the eye and sweeping outward. Make the top lash longest and the bottom two slightly shorter.

Embroider one curved eyebrow above each eye between R11 and R12. Each eyebrow should be about 5 stitches long, lightly arched, and placed with a soft friendly angle.

Duck Bill

Use orange yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. The bill is oval, slightly raised, and has a visible lower lip line. Work tightly but do not overstuff.

Upper Bill

  1. Ch 9.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the other side of the chain, sc 6, inc in last st. (18)

  5. R4 to R5: sc in each st around. (30)
  6. R6: sc 5, dec, sc 8, dec, sc 8, dec, sc 3. (27)

FO, leaving a long tail. Add a small amount of stuffing. Flatten the back edge slightly. Sew the upper bill centered between R17 and R21 of the head, directly below the eyes.

Lower Bill Line

Use orange yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

  1. Ch 10.
  2. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st 9.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

Sew this small chain under the upper bill as the curved lower mouth line. Position it along the lower front edge so the bill looks open and rounded like the image.

Body

Use pale yellow yarn. The body is short and rounded because the dress covers most of it. Work in continuous rounds and stuff firmly. The neck opening must support the oversized head.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) 6 times. (18)

  12. R19: (sc 2, dec) 6 times. (18)
  13. R20 to R21: sc in each st around. (18)

Stuff the body firmly, keeping the bottom rounded and the top narrow. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew the head to the body using the 18 stitches of the head opening and the 18 stitches of the body neck.

Legs

Make two legs in orange. The legs are slim and straight, visible below the dress. Stuff lightly so they remain flexible enough to sit over the edge of a table.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: (sc 3, inc) 3 times. (15)
  4. R4 to R18: sc in each st around. (15)

Stuff lightly. Flatten the top of each leg and close with 7 sc through both layers. FO, leaving a tail. Sew the legs to the bottom front of the body, 5 stitches apart, angled straight downward.

Feet

Make two orange feet. They should look rounded and duck-like inside the yellow sandals.

  1. Ch 7.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side, sc 4, inc in last st. (14)
  3. R2: inc, sc 4, inc 3 times, sc 4, inc 2 times. (20)

  7. R6: sc in each st around. (12)

Stuff the toe area lightly. FO, leaving a long tail. Sew one foot to the bottom of each leg, pointing forward. The flat underside should sit neatly inside the sandal sole.

Arms

Make two arms in pale yellow. The arms are simple rounded tubes that hang beside the dress. They are slightly tapered at the wrist.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: (sc 1, inc) 3 times. (9)
  3. R3 to R5: sc in each st around. (9)
  4. R6: (sc 1, dec) 3 times. (6)
  5. R7 to R17: sc in each st around. (6)

Stuff only the lower half very lightly. Flatten the top and close with 3 sc through both layers. FO, leaving a tail. Sew the arms to the sides of the body between R18 and R20 of the body, angled slightly downward.

Blue and White Sunflower Dress

The dress is made directly from the upper chest downward, then sewn lightly to the body. It has blue and white horizontal stripes, a fitted bodice, a flared skirt, ruffled sleeves, a white collar edge, and sunflower appliques.

Dress Bodice

Use blue yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. Chain loosely so the bodice fits around the body just below the neck.

  1. R1: Ch 31. Join with sl st to first ch without twisting. Ch 1, sc in each ch around. (30)
  2. R2: sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (30)
  3. R3: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, sl st to first hdc. (30)

  5. R5: Change to blue. Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat around. (36)
  6. R6: hdc in each st around. (36)

Place the bodice around the body under the head. The top should sit like a little dress neckline. Leave the back join centered at the back of the doll.

Skirt

Continue from the bodice. The skirt flares outward and alternates blue and white stripes. Use joined rounds for clean color changes.

  1. R7: Change to white. Ch 2, (hdc 5, inc hdc) 6 times, sl st to first hdc. (42)
  2. R8: hdc in each st around. (42)

White Scallop Hem

Use white yarn. Attach at the back seam of the skirt.

  1. R18: Ch 1, sc in first st, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, repeat around. Adjust the final repeat with sc or sl st if needed so the scallops sit evenly.
  2. FO and weave in the end.

The hem should look like a soft white wavy trim under the blue stripe. Steam lightly with your hand only, never with direct heat, to shape the scallops outward.

White Neckline Trim

Attach white yarn to the top edge of the bodice.

  1. R1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the neckline, placing 30 sc total.
  2. R2: Sl st in each st around for a neat raised edge.

FO and weave in the ends. This makes the white collar line visible at the top of the blue dress.

Ruffled Sleeves

Make two blue ruffled sleeves. They sit at the shoulders over the pale yellow arms. Use the 2.75 mm hook.

  1. Ch 13.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (12)
  3. R2: ch 2, 3 dc in each st across. (36)
  4. R3: ch 1, sc in each st across. (36)

FO, leaving a long tail. Curve each ruffle into a short sleeve cap. Sew one sleeve over each arm join with the ruffle edge pointing outward and slightly upward.

Sunflower Appliques for Dress

Make five small sunflowers for the dress: three across the bodice and two on the lower skirt. Use brown centers and golden yellow petals.

Small Sunflower Center

Use dark brown yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. Make five.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to first sc. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around, sl st to first sc. (12)

Small Sunflower Petals

Change to golden yellow.

  1. R3: Ch 2, dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in same st, sl st in next st. Repeat around to make 12 small petals.
  2. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew three flowers across the blue bodice stripe, spacing them evenly. Sew two flowers on the lower blue skirt stripe. Keep the flowers flat and secure the petals with tiny stitches if they lift too much.

Orange Headband

The headband is a thin orange band around the crown, with a spiral rose placed on the upper right side of the head. Use orange yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

  1. Ch 62, or enough to fit around the head from one side of the neck, over the crown, to the other side.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across.
  3. R2: ch 1, sl st in each st across for a firm raised cord.

  2. R1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in each ch across. (60)
  3. R2: ch 2, dc in first st, 2 dc in each st across. The strip will curl naturally.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Roll the strip into a rose, keeping the center tight and the outer petals looser. Sew through the base several times. Attach the rose to the right side of the headband, slightly above the right eye.

  1. Place front and back together with wrong sides touching.
  2. Ch 1, sc through both layers down the side, across the bottom, and up the other side.
  3. Leave the top open.
  4. FO and weave in ends.

For a firmer bag, insert a small rectangle of plastic canvas or thin cardboard before closing the second side. Do not make the bag too thick; it should rest flat against the dress.

Bag Flap

  1. Attach yellow yarn to the back top edge.
  2. R1: sc 14 across the top back edge.
  3. R2 to R5: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. (14)
  4. R6: ch 1, turn, dec, sc 10, dec. (12)

  1. Ch 68, or long enough to cross the doll from left shoulder to right hip.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across.
  3. FO, leaving tails at both ends.

Sew one strap end to the upper left back of the bag and the other to the upper right back of the bag. Place the strap diagonally over the doll after the dress is sewn in place.

  4. Change to yellow.
  5. R4: ch 3, dc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sl st in next st of center. Repeat in each st around to make 18 petals.

FO, leaving a sewing tail. Sew the sunflower to the lower right front of the bag flap, slightly off center, matching the image.

Yellow Sandals

Make two sandals with yellow soles, yellow straps, and small blue flowers. The orange duck feet should remain visible at the toe and heel.

Sandal Sole

Use yellow yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. Make two.

Use dark gray thread to make three tiny straight stitches on the sprinkle head to suggest holes.

Tiny Bee Accent

The small bee sits near the watering can. It adds the garden theme seen in the image. Use yellow, black, and white yarn with the 2.25 mm hook.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Bee Body

  1. With yellow, R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

  7. Change to yellow, R7: (sc 1, dec) 4 times. (8)
  8. R8: dec 4 times. (4)

Stuff lightly before closing. FO and close the remaining hole. Embroider two small black eyes on the yellow face.

Bee Wings

Use white yarn. Make two.

  1. Ch 5.
  2. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, 3 hdc in last ch.
  3. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew both wings to the top of the bee, slightly angled outward. Keep them flat and small.

Facial Shaping

Use pale yellow yarn and a long needle for gentle eye sculpting. Insert the needle at the bottom of the head opening, come out beside the first eye, go across under the eye, and return to the bottom. Repeat for the second eye.

Pull gently until the eyes sit slightly into the face. Do not pull too tightly, because the duck should keep a soft round expression. Tie the sculpting yarn securely inside the neck area before sewing the head to the body.

Dress Placement and Sewing

Slide the dress onto the body before attaching the head if you prefer easier placement. The neckline should sit high, just below the duck’s chin. The skirt should flare over the legs and end just above the orange feet.

  • Sew the upper bodice to the body with small blue stitches hidden along the neckline.
  • Sew the back seam closed if there is a gap.
  • Tack the skirt lightly at the left and right hip so it does not rotate.
  • Keep the front skirt free and flared, matching the image.

Head and Body Assembly

Place the head on the neck opening with the bill centered over the front of the dress. Use pins to check that the eyes face forward and the head does not tilt backward.

  1. Use the long pale yellow tail from the head.
  2. Sew one stitch from the head opening to one stitch of the neck opening.
  3. Continue around the neck twice for strength.
  4. Add extra stuffing into the neck before closing the last small gap.
  5. Weave in the end inside the body.

Accessory Placement

Place the yellow bag strap over the left shoulder and across the chest to the right hip. The bag should rest on the lower right front of the dress, partly covering the blue and white stripes.

Place the hat to the side as a separate display prop. Position the watering can and bee near the duck’s left side. These accessories help recreate the garden tabletop scene in the image.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Sew the bill centered between the eyes, with the upper bill covering R17 to R21 of the head.
  • Attach the lower bill chain directly under the upper bill for a soft smiling shape.
  • Sew the headband across the crown and attach the rose on the duck’s upper right side.
  • Sew arms under the ruffled sleeves so the sleeves cover the shoulder joins.
  • Sew legs evenly under the body, then attach the orange feet and yellow sandals.
  • Embroider eyelashes last so they stay clean and smooth.

Check the face from the front, side, and slightly above. The doll should have a rounded head, wide blue eyes, curved lashes, a centered orange bill, and a bright garden outfit with visible sunflower details.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, cardboard inserts, or glued details are used.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the hat, watering can, and bee in a small bag when not displayed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and larger than the body.
  • The bill is centered and slightly raised.
  • The eyes are even, wide apart, and framed with blue rings and lashes.
  • The dress has clear blue and white stripes with a white scallop hem.
  • The sunflower appliques are sewn flat and evenly spaced.
  • The bag strap crosses diagonally from shoulder to hip.
  • The sandals show orange feet with yellow straps and blue flower accents.
  • The blue hat has a flat brim and white bow.
  • The watering can and bee are small enough to remain accessory props.

To preserve the doll’s shape, avoid soaking it. Use a damp cloth to clean the yellow head, orange bill, dress, and accessories. Press gently instead of rubbing, especially around the eyelashes, sunflower petals, and headband rose.

Store the doll upright in a dry place away from direct sunlight. If the skirt flattens during storage, gently reshape the scallop hem with your fingers. Keep the small bee and watering can separate from heavy items so they do not bend.

For long-term display, dust the doll with a soft brush once a week. Check sewn accessories occasionally and reinforce loose stitches with matching yarn. This keeps the sunflower dress doll neat, bright, and ready for a garden-themed crochet display.
