This woodland bakery cottage is a full crochet diorama with a red mushroom roof, cream cottage walls, an open bakery front, glowing round window, arched door, shelves of tiny breads, cakes, cookies, a badger baker in a striped apron, a squirrel customer, a hedgehog with baguettes, a bunny bread cart, flowers, stepping stones, a pond, bridge, and mushrooms on a green oval base.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Skill Level
Intermediate-friendly amigurumi and diorama crochet. The project uses mostly single crochet, increases, decreases, color changes, sewing, and small appliqué pieces. The tiny bakery items are simple, but there are many of them, so work slowly and label each finished piece before assembly.
Finished Size
- Complete oval display base: about 16 in / 40.5 cm wide and 13 in / 33 cm deep.
- Mushroom bakery cottage: about 10 in / 25.5 cm tall to the top of the cap.
- Badger baker: about 3.5 in / 9 cm tall.
- Squirrel customer: about 3.25 in / 8 cm tall.
- Hedgehog chair scene: about 2.75 in / 7 cm tall.
- Bunny bread cart: about 3 in / 7.5 cm long.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in grass green, cream, red, white, dark brown, tan, caramel, golden yellow, black, gray, rust orange, soft pink, lavender, blue, beige, and small scraps for flowers.
- 3.0 mm crochet hook for the cottage, base, animals, and furniture.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for pastries, flowers, window bars, and tiny details.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Cardboard or plastic canvas for stiffening the base, door, shelves, signs, and bridge.
- 6 mm black safety eyes for the squirrel, hedgehog, and bunny.
- 5 mm black safety eyes for the badger, or black embroidery knots.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and fabric-safe craft glue if desired.
- Optional warm yellow felt or yarn backing for the interior glow behind the front opening and round window.
Abbreviations Used
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec = invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- st / sts = stitch / stitches
- R = round or row
- FO = fasten off
Gauge and Texture
Use tight amigurumi tension so the cottage walls and characters stand firmly. With a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc x 6 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. The mushroom roof should look dense and rounded, not floppy. If stuffing shows through, go down one hook size.
Important Construction Notes
- Work the animals in continuous rounds unless a row instruction says to turn.
- The cottage wall is worked as a curved cylinder with a large open front so the bakery interior is visible.
- The red mushroom cap is slightly flattened and wide, with a soft overhang like the image.
- Use pins before sewing the scene together. The final charm comes from accurate placement.
- Stuff the cottage wall lightly only around the side columns. The open front should remain hollow.
Part 1: Green Oval Woodland Base
The base is an oval grass mat. It holds the mushroom cottage at the back center, the bunny cart on the left, the path in the middle, the squirrel in front, the hedgehog chair on the right, and the pond with bridge at the front right.
Oval Base
- With grass green yarn and 3.0 mm hook, ch 41.
- R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 39, 3 sc in last ch. Continue along the opposite side of the chain, sc 38, inc in last ch. 82 sts.
- R2: inc, sc 38, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc 38, inc in each of next 2 sts. 88 sts.
- R3: sc 1, inc, sc 38, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 38, repeat sc 1, inc twice. 94 sts.
- R4: sc 2, inc, sc 38, repeat sc 2, inc three times, sc 38, repeat sc 2, inc twice. 100 sts.
- R5: sc 3, inc, sc 38, repeat sc 3, inc three times, sc 38, repeat sc 3, inc twice. 106 sts.
- R6: sc 4, inc, sc 38, repeat sc 4, inc three times, sc 38, repeat sc 4, inc twice. 112 sts.
- R7: sc around evenly. 112 sts.
- R8: BLO sc around to form a neat edge. 112 sts.
- R9: sc around, placing 1 sl st at the end. FO, leaving a long tail.
Cut a matching oval from cardboard or plastic canvas, slightly smaller than the crochet base. Make a second plain green oval by repeating R1 to R7 only. Place stiffener between the two ovals and sew edges together through the unused loops of R8. This makes the base flat enough to support the cottage.

Raised Grass Border
- Join green yarn anywhere on the outer edge.
- Work one round of sl st loosely around the base edge.
- Work one round of repeat ch 2, sl st in next st around to create a tiny grassy ridge.
- FO and weave in ends underneath.
Part 2: Blue Pond and Small Bridge
Pond
- With blue yarn and 3.0 mm hook, ch 13.
- R1: Sc 11, 3 sc in last ch, sc 10 along opposite side, inc in last ch. 26 sts.
- R2: inc, sc 10, inc in each of next 3 sts, sc 10, inc in each of next 2 sts. 32 sts.
- R3: sc 1, inc, sc 10, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 10, repeat sc 1, inc twice. 38 sts.
- R4: sc around. 38 sts.
- FO and sew the pond to the front right of the green base, angled slightly from lower center toward the right edge.
Bridge
- With beige yarn, ch 11.
- R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 10 sts.
- R2-R6: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 10 sts.
- R7: Ch 1, turn, sc 2, hdc 6, sc 2. 10 sts.
- R8: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 10 sts.
- FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
Cut a tiny rectangle of plastic canvas and place it under the bridge if you want a curved look. Sew only the two short ends over the pond so the center arches upward. Add brown sl st lines across R2, R4, and R6 to imitate wooden planks.
Part 3: Stepping Stone Path
The path uses many small flat stones in gray, beige, and light blue. Make different sizes so the path looks natural.
Small Stone
- With gray, beige, or pale blue and 2.25 mm hook, make a magic ring.
- R1: 6 sc in ring. 6 sts.
- R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
- Sl st to finish, FO, leaving a sewing tail.
Oval Stone
- Ch 5.
- R1: Sc 3, 3 sc in last ch, sc 2 along opposite side, inc in last ch. 10 sts.
- R2: sc 1, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 2, inc. 14 sts.
- FO, leaving a tail.
Make 18 stones total. Sew them from the front center of the base toward the bakery door. Curve the path slightly left, then back to the door, matching the image. Place a few smaller stones near the squirrel basket.
Part 4: Mushroom Bakery Cottage Wall
The cottage wall is cream, rounded, and open at the front. The side columns lean slightly inward under the mushroom cap. The front opening should be wide, with the arched door on the left side and a bakery display on the right side.
Cottage Wall Body
- With cream yarn and 3.0 mm hook, ch 54. Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
- R1: Ch 1, sc around. 54 sts.
- R2-R6: Sc around. 54 sts.
- R7: Sc 10, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 10. 52 sts.
- R8-R12: Sc around. 52 sts.
- R13: Sc 9, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 9. 50 sts.
- R14-R19: Sc around. 50 sts.
- R20: Sc 8, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 8. 48 sts.
- R21-R25: Sc around. 48 sts.
- R26: Sc 7, dec, sc 30, dec, sc 7. 46 sts.
- R27-R30: Sc around. 46 sts.
- FO, leaving a long tail.
Flatten the front area and mark a 24-stitch-wide opening from the lower front center up to R23. Carefully cut no yarn; instead, fold the marked front section inward and sew it flat against the inside wall to create a clean open bakery front. The side edges should become two cream columns, each about 6 stitches wide.
Front Opening Edge
- Join cream yarn at the lower left edge of the front opening.
- Sc evenly up the left edge, across the top arch, and down the right edge. Place 2 sc in corner turns.
- Work one more row of sc back around the opening for thickness.

- R16: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc 20, dec. 22 sts.
- R17: Ch 1, turn, dec, sc 18, dec. 20 sts.
- FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew this panel inside the cottage at the back wall. It gives the bakery the warm glowing look seen in the picture. Keep the lower edge flat against the base and the top edge tucked below the mushroom roof.
Part 5: Red Mushroom Roof
The roof is broad, red, rounded, and flattened underneath. It overhangs the cream cottage wall by about 1 in / 2.5 cm on all sides. Stuff it lightly so it has a soft dome shape but still sits level.
Top Mushroom Cap
- With red yarn and 3.0 mm hook, make a magic ring.

Part 16: Side Wall Baskets and Hanging Flowers
Wall Basket
- With tan yarn and 2.25 mm hook, ch 6.
- R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 5 sts.
- R2-R3: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 5 sts.
- Sc around the edge. FO.
Make 2 wall baskets. Sew one to each outer cream wall. Add tiny white and green flower knots inside each basket. The baskets should sit just below the mushroom roof rim.
Part 17: Attaching the Cottage to the Base
Place the cream cottage wall on the back center of the green base. The open front should face the stepping stone path. Pin the wall in place, making sure the door has room to swing open on the left and the display shelf remains visible on the right.
- Sew the bottom round of the cottage wall to the green base using cream yarn.
- Pass the needle through the base and the lower wall every 2 stitches.
- Stuff the side columns lightly as you sew so the walls stand straight.
- Keep the back wall rounded. Do not flatten it.
- Place the mushroom cap on top with equal overhang left and right.
- Sew the underside of the cap to the top of the cream wall using cream yarn.
- Add extra stitches at the front columns so the roof does not tilt forward.
Part 18: Scene Placement Guide
- Back center: mushroom cottage with red cap and cream wall.
- Top front wall: round glowing window centered under the roof.
- Left opening: arched door sewn open at a 60-degree angle.
- Inside left: counter with badger baker holding cookie tray.
- Inside right: display shelves stacked with bread and cakes.
- Front center: stepping stone path leading to the open door.
- Left front: bunny bread cart and bakery sign.
- Front center-right: squirrel holding basket.
- Right side: hedgehog sitting in chair with baguette.
- Front right edge: blue pond with beige bridge.
- Around base: flowers, leaves, and red mini mushrooms.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all large pieces are attached, sew the small figures into place with matching yarn. Add the badger’s black eye patches, the squirrel’s tiny nose, the hedgehog’s fringe spikes, and the bunny’s soft mouth line last. These final details should be small and gentle so the cottage remains the main focus.
Use black embroidery yarn for noses and mouths. For a soft handmade look, make one short vertical stitch for each nose and a tiny V-shaped mouth below it. Do not overfill the faces with details, because the image has a cute miniature style.
Care Notes
Spot clean only. Use a slightly damp cloth and gently dab the surface. Do not soak the cottage because cardboard or plastic canvas may bend inside the base, door, shelves, and bridge. Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The mushroom roof is wide, red, rounded, and has uneven white spots.
- The cream cottage has an open front with a warm yellow interior.
- The door is dark brown, arched, and sewn open on the left.
- The round window is centered above the opening with crossbars.
- The badger baker stands inside holding a cookie tray.
- The shelves, table, cart, and oven are filled with tiny baked goods.
- The squirrel, hedgehog, bunny cart, pond, bridge, flowers, mushrooms, and stones are all attached securely.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Keep the finished bakery away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially the red mushroom cap and tiny flowers. Store it in a dust-free display case or on a shelf where it will not be pressed from above.
If dust gathers between the small pastries or flowers, use a soft makeup brush to lift it away. Avoid pulling on the small pieces. If a pastry loosens, reattach it with a few sewing stitches rather than heavy glue.
For long-term storage, wrap the cottage loosely in acid-free tissue and place it in a sturdy box. Do not stack heavy items on top. The mushroom cap should remain rounded, the open door should keep its angle, and the tiny animals should stay upright.
