Gauge and Tension
Use tight amigurumi tension so stuffing does not show. With worsted yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, 6 sc rounds should measure about 1.25 in / 3 cm across. Gauge is less important than firmness, but all matching pieces should use the same tension.
The cottage body must stand upright, so do not crochet loosely. If the fabric feels floppy, go down one hook size. If the cottage leans after stuffing, add a firmer base insert and stuff the lower third more densely.
Important Construction Notes
- The cottage is worked from the bottom up as a rounded corn granary shape.
- The kernel texture is made with bobbles placed in repeated vertical columns.
- The roof is made from separate long green husk panels sewn around the top opening.
- The door, windows, sign, steps, cornfield, wagon, mice, and harvest props are sewn on after the cottage is stuffed.
- Use pins before sewing to match the pictured arrangement: cottage centered, cornfield on the left, cart and hanging corn on the right, pumpkins in the front right, and mice in front.
Oval Grass Base
Use olive green yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds around both sides of the foundation chain. This base should be firm, flat, and slightly oversized so all accessories sit on top like a small harvest yard.

Attaching the Cottage to the Base

Sew the cottage to the base through the bottom BLO ridge of the cottage and the top stitches of the base. Use cream yellow yarn and small stitches. Sew around twice for stability. Do not pull so tightly that the base curls.

Detailed Sewing Order
- Sew the cottage body firmly to the green base.
- Sew the roof husks around the top, then sew the collar over the roof seam.
- Sew the small corn topper to the roof collar.
- Sew the door to the front, then add the door sign and knob.
- Sew the steps below the door.
- Sew both windows in place.
- Sew the cornfield stalks on the left side.
- Sew the left sign in front of the cornfield.
- Sew stepping stones to the front path.
- Sew the cart on the right side, then add the vegetables inside.
- Sew the clothesline posts behind the cart and attach the hanging corn.
- Sew the tiny hanging mouse beside the line.
- Sew the front mice, basket, bottle, sack, pumpkins, mushrooms, hay bundle, leaves, and loose kernels.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check each mouse face before sewing the mice permanently. The eyes should be level, the ears should sit high and open, and the nose should be small. Add two short whiskers on each side of each front mouse for a gentle handmade look.
For the farmer mouse, sew the straw hat after the ears are attached. Tilt the hat slightly forward, but keep the eyes visible. For the plain mouse, angle the arms around the basket so it looks like the mouse is holding the harvest kernels.
Shape the roof husks by gently curving the tips upward. The front two husks should frame the door like open leaves. The side husks should drape down the rounded cottage wall without hiding the windows.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash because the cottage, cart, signs, and tiny pieces may bend or loosen.
- Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
- Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to prevent yarn fading.
- This is a decorative crochet display, not a toy for babies or pets.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The cottage stands straight and does not wobble.
- The roof husks overlap evenly around the top.
- The small corn topper is centered.
- The arched door is centered under the front roof opening.
- The door sign reads Harvest Granary.
- The left sign reads Corn Harvest Day.
- Both mice have ears, tails, feet, arms, eyes, noses, and whiskers.
- The cart contains corn, carrots, and leafy greens.
- The hanging corn line has 6 mini cobs.
- Pumpkins, mushrooms, hay, stones, baskets, and loose kernels are sewn securely.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Use a soft dry brush to remove dust from the roof husks, bobble kernels, and grass base. Brush gently in the direction of the stitches. For small stains, dab with a damp cloth instead of rubbing.
If the cottage is stored seasonally, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Avoid crushing the roof tips, corn stalks, and clothesline. Store the piece upright in a box with enough space above the roof topper.
After storage, reshape the roof husks, mouse tails, corn stalks, and hanging corn by hand. If wire was used inside any parts, bend slowly and carefully. Do not force sharp bends, because repeated bending can weaken the support.
