Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished piece is designed as a detailed display diorama. The main base is a firm circular garden, the cottage is worked as a separate cylinder with a wide mushroom roof, and the small decorations are sewn on after blocking and shaping.
The pattern uses tight amigurumi-style stitches for structure. Work most pieces with a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests. Stuff the cottage, mushroom stems, fairy heads, and small forms firmly, but keep the pond, stones, flowers, fence, and sign flat or lightly padded.
Finished size with DK yarn and a 2.5 mm hook is approximately 12 inches wide and 10 inches tall including the chimney. Size will vary depending on yarn, hook, stuffing, and tension.
Materials
- DK weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in grass green, moss green, dark green, cream, red, white, tan, light brown, dark brown, gray, blue, pale pink, lavender, mint, peach, yellow, and black.
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for most amigurumi pieces.
- 2.0 mm crochet hook for fairies, tiny flowers, dots, and embroidery details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Cardboard, plastic canvas, or foam board circle, about 11 inches wide, for the hidden base insert.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Small amount of floral wire or pipe cleaners for fern stems, fence shaping, swing ropes, and fairy arms if desired.
- Two 6 mm safety eyes or embroidered eyes for each fairy.
- One tiny wooden bead or crocheted yellow knob for the cottage door.
- Optional craft glue for securing flat spots, sign letters, and pond flowers.
Abbreviations
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- inc = 2 stitches in the same stitch
- dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- st = stitch
- sts = stitches
- R = round or row
- FO = fasten off
Gauge and Working Notes
Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. For the cottage wall, 6 sc should measure about 1 inch. For the red mushroom roof, the fabric should be firm but flexible enough to curve downward over the cottage wall.
Work in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. For flat circles, lightly steam block or pin the pieces flat before sewing. For small decorative pieces, leave long tails so each piece can be attached securely.
To match the photographed shape, the roof should be wider than the cottage wall and should sit low, like a broad mushroom cap. The fence should stand around the front edge of the garden and include a rounded gate on the right front side. The sign should be placed on the left front fence.

Bottom Circle
Repeat R1 to R32 only in grass green. Do not make the side edge. FO and weave in the tail.
Join the Base
- Cut a firm circle slightly smaller than the crocheted base, about 10.5 inches wide.
- Place the insert between the top and bottom circles, wrong sides together.
- Using the long tail from the top circle, sc through both layers around the edge.
- Before closing completely, add a thin layer of stuffing above the insert if you want a soft garden mound.
- Close the final gap with sc, sl st to the first joining stitch, and FO.
- With dark green and moss green yarn, surface crochet short uneven lines across the top to imitate garden moss.
Moss Texture for the Garden
The photographed garden has soft, uneven greenery. Add this after the base is complete. Do not cover the full circle evenly. Leave open areas where the cottage, pond, path, and fence will sit.
- With moss green, join yarn anywhere on the top surface. Ch 5, sl st into the base, ch 7, sl st into the base, ch 4, sl st into the base. FO.
- Repeat 18 to 24 times around the front and sides.
- With dark green, make small loop clusters: ch 3, sl st in same spot, ch 4, sl st in same spot, ch 3, sl st in same spot. FO.
- Sew or knot a few dark green strands near the pond and fence to create a woodland floor.
Mushroom Cottage Wall
The cottage body is a cream cylinder, slightly taller than it is wide. It sits toward the back center of the garden, leaving room at the front for the pond, path, fairies, and fence sign.
Cottage Cylinder
Use cream yarn and 2.5 mm hook.

Sew each shell to a body. Add two antennae with ch 4 strands or embroidery stitches. Sew snails near the front garden edge.
Extra Flowers and Ground Details
The garden includes small flowers near the pond, fence, and cottage. Use short pieces of yarn and tiny crocheted motifs so the top surface looks full but not crowded.
Tiny Five-Petal Flowers, Make 12

Sew flowers in small groups of 2 or 3 near the pond and fence. Add leaves around them. Keep the path open so the stones remain visible.
Optional Cottage Side Mushroom Cluster
The right side of the scene has several mushrooms of different heights near the fence and cottage. Make one medium red mushroom and two beige mushrooms for this cluster.
Medium Mushroom Stem

Add white dots and place this medium mushroom on the right back side of the garden, behind the pond.
Placement Map
Use this placement guide before sewing pieces permanently. Pin all parts first. Check the cottage from the front, side, and top so the composition looks balanced like the image.
- Place the cottage slightly behind center, not directly in the middle.
- Place the door facing the front opening of the fence.
- Place the pond at the front right of the cottage.
- Place the stone path from the door to the gate.
- Place the swing mushroom at the front left side.
- Place the mint fairy on the swing.
- Place the lavender fairy between the pond and the cottage path.
- Place tall ferns behind the swing and on both sides of the cottage.
- Place the sign on the left front fence section.
- Place the gate on the right front fence section.
- Place mushroom clusters near the gate, pond, swing, and right side fence.
- Place snails near the front edge where they can be seen.
How to Sew the Cottage to the Base
Use cream yarn and a long needle. Sew through the bottom round of the cottage and into the green base. Go around the cottage twice for strength. Pull firmly, but do not distort the cylinder.
After the cottage is attached, add extra moss stitches around its base. This hides the seam and makes the cottage look planted into the garden.
How to Attach the Roof Securely
The roof is large, so it needs a strong seam. Pin it to the cottage first. The white rim should sit evenly above the ruffle, and the red edge should overhang the wall on all sides.
- Use the long red tail inside the roof.
- Sew through the underside of the roof and through the top rounds of the cottage wall.
- Work around the full circle once.
- Work around a second time, catching the ruffle edge in a few places.
- Shape the roof with your hands so the front lip curves slightly downward.
Door and Window Attachment
Sew the door to the front center of the cream wall after the roof is attached. The top of the arched door should sit just under the ruffle, and the bottom should almost touch the grass base.
Sew one round window to the left of the door and one to the right side. The side window should be partly visible when looking from the front, as in the image. Add the basket under the right window after the window is secure.
Fence Attachment
Sew the fence posts directly onto the outer side edge and top edge of the base. Angle the posts slightly so they follow the round garden. The rails should sit across the posts, not behind them.
For a sturdy fence, sew each post at the bottom first, then sew the rails across the posts. Leave the gate opening clear. Sew the rounded gate at the front right, with its curved top rising above the rails.
Fairy Assembly Details
Both fairies are tiny, so use small neat stitches. Stuff heads lightly, but do not overstuff the bodies. The dresses should flare slightly at the bottom, creating a soft fairy-doll silhouette.
For faces, use one strand of black embroidery thread or thin black yarn. Make two short horizontal stitches for the eyes. Add a tiny pink smile below. Keep the face simple so it stays sweet and handmade.
Creating the Fairy Ring Look
To make the full scene feel like a fairy ring, arrange mushrooms and ferns in a loose circle around the cottage. Do not make the circle perfectly even. The charm comes from small height changes and natural spacing.
- Use taller mushrooms toward the back and sides.
- Use smaller mushrooms near the front edge.
- Let ferns lean over the fence.
- Use stones to lead the viewer’s eye to the door.
- Keep the pond open and visible.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Pin all pieces before sewing. Start with the cottage, roof, door, windows, pond, and stone path. Add the fence next, then mushrooms, ferns, fairies, flowers, snails, and the sign.
For the fairies, embroider small eyes, soft smiles, and hair details after the heads are sewn on. Add wings last so they remain clean and properly angled. Check that the swing fairy sits securely before trimming yarn tails.
Care Notes
This project is best used as a decorative display. Keep it away from moisture, direct sunlight, pets, and very young children. The tiny pieces, wire supports, beads, and sewn decorations may not be safe for babies or toddlers.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The cottage is firmly sewn to the base.
- The red roof overhangs evenly and sits above the brown ruffle.
- White roof spots are scattered naturally.
- The door is centered under the front roof edge.
- The pond and stone path are visible.
- The fence curves around the base and leaves a gate opening.
- The sign reads Fairy Ring Cottage.
- Both fairies have faces, wings, arms, and legs.
- Ferns, mushrooms, snails, and flowers are securely attached.
- All loose yarn ends are woven in or hidden inside the work.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the cottage gently with a soft brush or cool hair dryer on a low setting. Do not machine wash, soak, twist, or scrub the finished scene. If a small area becomes dirty, spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry fully.
Store the piece in a clean box with tissue around the roof and fence. Keep heavy items away from the mushroom cap, chimney, fairies, and ferns. If the roof flattens, reshape it gently with your hands and let it rest upright.
