Crochet Tutorial: Nutty Nook Woodland Cafe – Free Crochet Pattern.

This woodland crochet scene features a round mossy base, a cozy tree-stump cafe with an arched service window, a tiny squirrel barista, a large squirrel guest, a seated badger, cafe tables, chairs, cups, cakes, mushrooms, ferns, flowers, berries, vines, autumn leaves, and a small rope bridge. The finished display is designed as a detailed amigurumi-style cafe diorama.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The design is made from separate crochet pieces that are sewn and shaped together to match the picture: a circular forest floor, a hollow stump cafe, a raised counter, small woodland animals, outdoor seating, mushrooms, flowers, leaves, and cafe dishes.

For the closest result, keep your stitches firm, use a hook smaller than the yarn label recommends, and stuff each animal and stump piece gradually. The cafe should look rounded, soft, and handmade, with visible textured stitches like bark and moss.

Finished Size

  • Whole display: about 13 in wide and 10 in tall.
  • Tree cafe: about 5.5 in wide and 7 in tall.
  • Large squirrel: about 4.5 in tall including ears and tail.
  • Badger: about 3.5 in tall while seated.
  • Small barista squirrel: about 3 in tall inside the window.
  • Tables: about 2.25 in wide.
  • Chairs: about 2.25 in tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced beginner. Most pieces use simple amigurumi stitches, but the project has many small details. Work slowly, pin pieces before sewing, and check the shape from the front often.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in medium brown, dark brown, tan, cream, moss green, grass green, leaf green, rust orange, golden yellow, red, burgundy, lavender, blue, pink, white, black, gray, aqua, and beige.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for animals and small accessories.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the base, stump, roof, and counter.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • 6 mm safety eyes for the large squirrel and badger.
  • 4 mm safety eyes or black embroidery knots for the small squirrel.
  • Black embroidery thread for noses, mouths, and tiny details.
  • Tan embroidery thread for the cafe sign lettering.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small piece of plastic canvas or cardboard for the base and roof support.
  • Optional floral wire for flower stems and the rope bridge railing.
  • Fabric glue for tiny leaves, berries, cups, and cakes if desired.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

With a 3.0 mm hook and worsted yarn, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in. With a 2.5 mm hook, stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. Exact gauge is less important than firm structure.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work animals in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of each round.
  • Stuff the cafe wall lightly so it stays cylindrical, not puffy.
  • Flatten tiny leaves and petals with your fingers after fastening off.
  • Sew every accessory with matching yarn so the final scene looks neat from every angle.
  • The front of the cafe has a large arched opening. The back remains closed and rounded like a stump.

Join grass green yarn through both layers.

  1. R1: Sc through both layers around. 176 sts.
  2. R2: Ch 1, reverse sc around for a corded edge. Join with sl st and FO.

Moss Texture

Using moss green, grass green, and dark green, add scattered surface texture across the base. Insert the hook into any front-loop or surface space.

  • Make 30 tiny moss tufts: ch 4, sl st back down the chain, sl st into the base.
  • Make 20 thicker tufts: ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sl st in next 3 ch, sl st into the base.
  • Make 15 low soil bumps in dark brown: 4 sc in MR, sl st to join, sew flat to the base.

Part 2: Tree-Stump Cafe Body

The cafe is a wide, hollow-looking stump with a soft cylindrical wall, bark texture, a large arched service window, and a rounded top. The opening is made by crocheting a flat panel first, then building the wall around it.

Back Wall and Side Body Panel

Use medium brown yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. Work in rows.

  • Sew the right window column to the right front edge of the back panel.
  • Sew the arched window top across the top of the opening.
  • Lightly stuff the side wall as you sew, keeping the front opening hollow.
  • The bottom edge should sit flat on the forest base.

Bark Ridges

Use dark brown and tan yarn. Surface crochet vertical lines onto the stump wall.

  • Make 12 dark brown vertical slip-stitch lines from the top to the bottom of the cafe.
  • Make 8 tan short lines between them, each about 10 to 16 stitches long.
  • Place lines unevenly so the stump looks natural.
  • Around the arched window, add one row of cream sc as trim.

The roof is flat, round, and slightly wider than the stump. It has spiral stitch texture on top and leaf garlands around the rim.

Round Roof Disk

Use beige yarn and a 3.0 mm hook.

Care Notes

Care Notes: This crochet cafe is a decorative display, not a toy for babies or pets. Many pieces are small and firmly attached, but tiny cups, berries, leaves, and flowers can still loosen with rough handling.

  • Spot clean only with a lightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash.
  • Do not twist or soak the base.
  • Let the display air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to reduce fading.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The round base is flat and firm.
  • The cafe body stands upright without leaning.
  • The arched window is open and framed neatly.
  • The roof is centered and slightly overhanging.
  • The sign reads Nutty Nook Cafe.
  • The barista squirrel is visible behind the counter.
  • The large squirrel holds the tray in front.
  • The badger sits at the right table.
  • Both tables have cups, cakes, and plates.
  • Mushrooms, flowers, ferns, leaves, and berries are evenly scattered.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines: Store the finished cafe in a dry place, preferably inside a display box or on a shelf where it will not be pressed. If dust collects on the roof leaves or flowers, use a soft makeup brush to remove it gently.

For long-term preservation, avoid heavy moisture and strong heat. If a small part bends during storage, reshape it with your fingers and let it rest. Do not iron the animals, roof, flowers, or moss texture, because the raised stitches give the cafe its woodland charm.
