Finished Look and Proportions
The bear has a large round head, a smaller pear-shaped body, short tapered arms, and sturdy legs with rounded shoes. The head is visually the widest area. The body is dressed rather than left plain, so shaping must stay neat and symmetrical under clothing.
The outfit is very important to the final look. The dress is soft peach with floral embroidery-like crochet appliqué across the chest. Over it sits a cream apron skirt with suspenders, two front buttons, a centered cloud pocket, pink and blue flowers near the lower front, and a blue scalloped hem.
The hat is a bucket-style hat in peach, with rounded ear openings hidden under the brim line. A tiny flower cluster sits on one side. The squirrel companion is slim, petite, and dressed in a matching outfit. The backpack and bird are separate display accessories.
Skill Notes
- This design is best for confident beginners to intermediate makers.
- Keep stitches tight and even to match the smooth, refined appearance in the image.
- Stuff gradually. Overstuffing will distort the gentle rounded silhouette.
- Invisible decreases help keep the face and clothing neat.
- Sew all pieces with careful pinning before final attachment.
Abbreviations
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase
- dec = invisible decrease
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- rep = repeat
General Construction Notes
Work in continuous rounds unless a section says otherwise. Mark the first stitch of each round. The bear should stand with a gentle, slightly front-weighted balance because of the head. To keep it stable, pack the lower legs and feet firmly, and stuff the body more softly above the waist.
The photo shows refined shaping rather than dramatic sculpting. Keep increases and decreases evenly spaced. The face should remain calm and open, with the muzzle projecting just enough to create a sweet plush expression without becoming pointy or oversized.

At this stage the head should look generously rounded and slightly tall, not flat. If your tension is loose, add one extra plain round before shaping down.
Eye Placement
Insert the bear’s safety eyes between rounds 15 and 16, leaving a soft, calm space between them. The image shows the eyes fairly centered on the face, with the muzzle sitting below and between them. Do not place them too high.

Bear Muzzle
The muzzle is a separate rounded oval in cream. It should be softly padded and stitched low enough that the lower edge sits just above the neckline. The muzzle in the image is not huge. It covers the center lower face without hiding the cheeks.
- With color B, ch 7.
- Round 1: starting in second ch from hook, 5 sc, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work on opposite side, 4 sc, 2 sc in last ch. 14
- Round 2: inc, 4 sc, 3 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc. 20

- Round 4: sc around. 26
- Round 5: 10 sc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 10 sc. 26
Fasten off with a long tail. Add a tiny amount of stuffing only in the center so the muzzle remains neat and not puffy. Stitch it to the head centered below the eyes.
Nose and Mouth
Embroider a triangular nose in medium brown across the upper center of the muzzle. From the bottom tip of the nose, embroider one short vertical line downward. Add a tiny split mouth if desired, but keep it minimal. The image shows a very simple, gentle mouth treatment.
Eyebrows
Use dark brown embroidery thread to stitch two softly arched brows above the eyes. Each brow is short and slightly angled upward toward the outer side. This small detail gives the bear a sweet, attentive expression.
Bear Ears
The ears are rounded half-cups in the main peach tone. They are stitched to the upper sides of the head and partly framed by the hat. Keep them modest in size so the hat still appears dominant.

- Inc around. 12
- Rep 1 sc, inc around. 18
- Rep 2 sc, inc around. 24
- Rounds 5 to 6: sc around. 24
Flatten each ear and sew the open edge lightly closed so it curves naturally. Attach between the upper side and upper back area of the head.
Bear Body
The body is smaller than the head and slightly tapered upward. It should feel cuddly and compact, not cylindrical. Most of the visible upper body will later be covered by the peach bodice panel of the dress, so keep shaping smooth.

Stuff firmly at the base and moderately through the chest. Leave the very top edge slightly softer so the head can settle nicely when sewn on. Fasten off with a long tail.
Bear Arms
The arms are short, slightly tapered, and gently curved inward. The upper edge sits under the sleeve ruffle. The hands are not strongly shaped; they end in rounded tips.
- With color B, make 6 sc in MR. 6
- Inc around. 12
- Round 3: sc around. 12
- Change to color A.
- Rounds 4 to 11: sc around. 12
- Round 12: rep 4 sc, dec twice. 10
- Rounds 13 to 15: sc around. 10
Stuff the lower half only. Flatten the opening and sew closed. Make two. Attach them at the sides of the body so they angle slightly downward and inward.
Sleeve Ruffles
Join color A around the arm opening edge after attachment, or make separately and sew on. Work a simple ruffle line: rep 2 dc in one stitch, sl st in next stitch around the upper arm edge. Keep it soft and delicate. The image shows a small gathered sleeve, not a dramatic frill.
Bear Legs
The legs are sturdy and slightly short, with a smooth transition into the shoes. The standing posture in the photo suggests firm stuffing in the feet and lower legs. Make sure both legs match in height exactly.
Foot Base
- With color B, ch 8.
- Round 1: starting in second ch, 6 sc, 3 sc in last ch, 5 sc on opposite side, 2 sc in last ch. 16
- Round 2: inc, 5 sc, 3 inc, 5 sc, 2 inc. 22
- Round 3: 1 sc, inc, 5 sc, rep 1 sc, inc three times, 5 sc, rep 1 sc, inc two times. 28
- Round 4: BLO sc around. 28
- Rounds 5 to 6: sc around. 28
- Round 7: 8 sc, 6 dec, 8 sc. 22
- Round 8: 7 sc, 4 dec, 7 sc. 18
Stuff the toe firmly. Continue the leg upward.
Leg Shaft
- Rounds 9 to 14: sc around. 18
- Round 15: rep 7 sc, dec twice. 16
- Rounds 16 to 18: sc around. 16
Fasten off on first leg. On second leg, do not fasten off.
Join Legs and Form Lower Body Base
- Ch 4 from second leg and join to first leg.
- Sc around first leg, sc across chain, sc around second leg, sc across opposite side of chain. Total count should be adjusted evenly to about 40 stitches.
- Work 2 rounds even to stabilize the join.
If your leg count differs slightly because of tension, distribute one or two increases or decreases evenly during the joining round so the lower body remains centered and balanced.
Shoes
The shoes are built into the feet visually, but the front edge looks slightly raised. You can create this by adding one surface round at the shoe opening with slip stitches in the front half only. Keep the line subtle.
The soles should be softly flattened before final assembly so the bear can stand or sit evenly. Use a small insert of plastic canvas if you want a display finish.
Neck Join
Sew the head to the body with the muzzle facing forward and the chin just above the top of the bodice area. Because the head is large, add extra stuffing into the neck if needed before fully closing the seam. A wobbling head will change the likeness significantly.
Dress Bodice Panel
The visible upper outfit is a peach chest panel with cream flowers and sage leaves. This can be made as a fitted front panel sewn neatly onto the torso. It should cover the front chest from neckline to just above the apron line.
- With color A, ch enough to span the front chest width.
- Work rows of sc until the panel reaches from neckline to waistline.
- Shape the upper corners slightly inward with one dec at each side on the last 2 rows.
📌Thank you for reading the article
Sew the panel centered on the torso front.
Chest Flowers and Leaves
Make three cream flowers for the chest: one larger center flower and two smaller side flowers. Add sage leaves beneath and around them. In the image, the flowers sit high on the chest and feel integrated into the outfit rather than scattered randomly.
Small Flower
- With color B, make 5 sc in MR.
- In each stitch work: sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st.
Larger Center Flower
- With color B, make 6 sc in MR.
- Work 6 petals around: sl st, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st in each stitch space.
- Add a tiny center in color G if desired.
Leaves
- With color E, ch 5.
- Starting in second ch: sl st, sc, hdc, sc.
Make several leaves and sew beneath the flowers in mirrored placement.
Apron Skirt
The apron is a cream overskirt that wraps the lower body. It is slightly flared and ends above the feet. The front is smooth and structured enough to support the cloud pocket. A blue scalloped edging finishes the hem.
- With color B, make a waist chain that fits around the lower torso.
- Join carefully without twisting.
- Round 1: sc around.
- Round 2: rep 4 sc, inc around for gentle flare.
- Rounds 3 to 8: sc around.
- Round 9: rep 5 sc, inc around if more flare is needed.
- Rounds 10 to 13: sc around.
Test fit often. The apron should sit smoothly over the body, not cling tightly.
Blue Scalloped Hem
Join color C to the lower edge.
- Rep sl st in first stitch, skip one stitch, 5 dc in next stitch, skip one stitch, sl st in next stitch around.
This produces the soft blue scallop seen at the bottom edge.
Apron Suspenders
The suspenders are narrow cream straps running from the front apron top over the shoulders to the back. They attach with two visible buttons on the front. Keep them straight and evenly spaced.
- With color B, ch to desired strap length.
- Work 2 rows of sc for each strap.
Sew the lower ends to the apron front and the upper ends over the shoulders to the back. Stitch the two small buttons at the lower front ends.
Cloud Pocket
The cloud pocket is centered on the apron front. It is one of the key visual features, so take time with the shape. It should be softly rounded on top, flatter on the bottom, and large enough to dominate the middle of the apron without covering the floral garland.
- With color B, ch 11.
- Row 1: starting in second ch, 10 sc.
- Rows 2 to 4: ch 1, turn, sc across.
- Row 5: 2 sc in first stitch, 8 sc, 2 sc in last stitch.
- Rows 6 to 7: sc across.
Now shape the top bumps.
- Work 3 rounded cloud sections across the top by using combinations of hdc and dc in groups, then return to sc at the edges.
- Add one final border round of sc around the entire pocket for a clean outline.
📌Thank you for reading the article
Sew only the side and lower edges to the apron so the top remains visually pocket-like.
Apron Flowers and Leaves
At the lower front of the apron, place blush flowers on both sides of the cloud, with blue rosettes near them and sage leaves tucked underneath. The arrangement should feel balanced but not identical. The picture shows a handcrafted organic placement.
Blue Rosette
- With color C, ch 16.
- Work 2 dc in each chain across.
- Roll into a spiral and stitch the base.
Pink Spiral Flower
- With color D, ch 18.
- Work rep 2 dc in each chain across.
- Roll slightly looser than the blue rosette and stitch in place.
Make enough flowers to create a cluster under each side of the cloud pocket. Add leaves around each cluster.
Hat
The hat is a soft bucket hat in the same peach tone as the dress bodice and sleeves. It sits low on the forehead, with the brim angling outward slightly. The ears peek from beneath the sides, so the crown must not be too deep.
- With color A, make 6 sc in MR. 6
- Inc around. 12
- Rep 1 sc, inc around. 18
- Rep 2 sc, inc around. 24
- Rep 3 sc, inc around. 30
- Rep 4 sc, inc around. 36
- Rep 5 sc, inc around. 42
- Rep 6 sc, inc around. 48
- Rounds 9 to 13: sc around. 48
- Round 14: rep 7 sc, inc around. 54
- Rounds 15 to 17: sc around. 54
- Round 18: rep 8 sc, inc around. 60
- Rounds 19 to 20: sc around. 60
Fasten off. Steam lightly if needed to shape the brim. Do not flatten the crown.
Hat Flower Accent
Make one tiny cream flower, one tiny blue rosette, and two or three sage leaves. Stitch them near one side of the brim. This detail should be small and delicate, matching the image rather than overwhelming the hat.
Blue Backpack
The little backpack is soft blue with a cream cloud pocket on the front. It is a separate display accessory and does not need to open. Keep it boxy with rounded edges and a flap at the top.
- With color C, make a rectangular front panel by chaining a width that suits the bear.
- Work rows of sc to create front and back panels.
- Make one narrow side strip and sew around to join front and back.
- Add a short flap at the top of the back panel with a rounded lower edge.
Add a cream cloud to the front using the same shaping idea as the apron cloud, scaled down. Add simple chain straps or narrow sc straps to the back.
Tiny Bird
The tiny bird is sky blue with a cream beak area and a very compact rounded body. It should look decorative and sweet rather than anatomically detailed.
- With color C, make 6 sc in MR.
- Inc around. 12
- Rep 1 sc, inc around. 18
- Rounds 4 to 5: sc around. 18
- Insert tiny eyes or embroider eyes.
- Round 6: rep 1 sc, dec around. 12
- Stuff lightly.
- Round 7: dec around. 6
For the beak, embroider or add a tiny yellow triangle. Add very small side wings by stitching a few surface loops or sewing flat wing pieces.

Floral Ground Embellishment
The separate flower cluster shown near the bear consists of layered flowers in cream, blush, and pink, with sage leaves. Make one larger cream flower, one larger blush flower, one smaller pink flower, and a few leaves. Stitch them together into a loose arrangement for display.
Layered Flower Method
- Make a small ring center.
- Work one round of petals.
- Behind the first petal round, work a second round of slightly larger petals.
This creates the dimensional garden-like look visible in the image.
Squirrel Friend
The squirrel companion is slim, upright, and dressed to echo the bear’s outfit. The body is narrower, the muzzle is smaller, and the tail is large and textured. The hat and apron should closely match the bear set so the whole arrangement looks coordinated.
Squirrel Head
- With color F, make 6 sc in MR.
- Inc around to 12.
- Rep 1 sc, inc around. 18
- Rep 2 sc, inc around. 24
- Rep 3 sc, inc around. 30
- Rounds 6 to 10: sc around. 30
- Insert small eyes at the front.
- Begin decreasing evenly back down to 18, stuffing as you go.
Close the head neatly. Add a tiny lighter muzzle if desired, or embroider the nose directly onto the brown head with a short muzzle shape stitched in surface yarn.
Squirrel Ears
Make two tiny pointed ears. Start with 4 sc in MR, then work one increase round and one plain round. Fold lightly and sew to the top sides of the head.
Squirrel Body
- With color F, start with 6 sc in MR.
- Increase gradually to 24 stitches.
- Work several even rounds.
- Decrease slightly toward the neck.
Keep the body slim and upright. Stuff moderately.
Squirrel Arms and Legs
Use the same general shaping style as the bear but smaller and slimmer. The limbs should be delicate and proportional. The legs should support a standing or leaning display pose.
Squirrel Tail
The tail is a large curved piece that rises behind the body. It should be visually taller than the squirrel’s head. To achieve the textured ribbed look, work the tail in rows or rounds using BLO sections.
- Ch a short base and work oval rounds, increasing into a curved teardrop shape.
- Continue upward, adding extra stitches on the outer curve side to create bend.
- Work several BLO rounds or rows to create visible texture.
- Lightly stuff or leave mostly flat with only a little padding at the base.
Sew the tail securely to the back so it curves up and outward.
Squirrel Outfit
Make a tiny peach bodice panel, cream apron skirt, tiny suspenders, and matching peach hat. Add miniature flower accents in the same color palette. Keep every element simplified but clearly related to the larger bear’s outfit.
Assembly Order
- Sew muzzle to bear head.
- Add nose, mouth line, and brows.
- Sew ears to head.
- Make legs and join lower body.
- Complete body and attach head.
- Attach arms.
- Sew chest panel and floral appliqués.
- Add apron skirt and suspenders.
- Sew cloud pocket and apron flowers.
- Place buttons.
- Fit hat and stitch lightly if desired.
- Make all accessories and the squirrel companion.
Color Placement Guide
- Bear head and visible upper limbs: peach-beige
- Muzzle and apron: cream
- Hem trim, backpack, bird: dusty sky blue
- Apron flowers: blush and blue with sage leaves
- Chest flowers: cream with sage leaves
- Squirrel: warm cinnamon brown with matching peach and cream outfit details
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Pin every major piece before sewing. Check the head tilt from the front and side. The face should look calm, centered, and slightly childlike. Keep the muzzle low, the brows soft, and the nose modest. Place floral accents only after the clothing is fully attached.
For the best likeness, keep the hat low on the forehead and let the ears sit slightly under the brim line. The apron must stay centered so the cloud pocket remains the focus of the lower outfit.
Care Notes
- Store away from direct sunlight to protect pastel shades.
- Dust gently with a soft dry brush.
- Handle floral appliqués and small accessories with care.
- If gifting to a child, embroider features instead of using safety eyes where appropriate.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Head is centered and secure
- Muzzle is symmetrical
- Brows match in angle and length
- Apron sits evenly around the body
- Cloud pocket is centered
- Both front buttons align with the straps
- Hat brim is smooth and balanced
- Squirrel tail is firmly attached
- Backpack, bird, and flower cluster match the set colors
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Spot clean first using a lightly damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the doll unless absolutely necessary, especially if buttons or structured inserts were used. If washing is needed, support the shape by hand, rinse gently, press in a towel, and dry flat away from heat.
Do not hang the bear to dry because the large head may pull on the neck seam while wet. Reshape the hat brim, apron, pocket, and flowers while damp. Once dry, smooth the surface gently with clean fingers and store in a breathable container.
