Crochet Tutorial: Sunny Daisy Monkey Doll – Free Crochet Pattern

This sunny daisy monkey doll is a cheerful garden-style amigurumi with a dusty pink monkey head, rounded cream muzzle, black safety eyes, a yellow daisy dress, embroidered flowers, tiny bees, sandals, a crossbody bag, a small honey pot, and a removable sun hat. The finished doll is designed to sit upright with long arms, dangling legs, soft rounded ears, and a sweet handmade expression.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates one seated monkey doll with the same soft proportions shown in the image: a large round head, short neck, slim upper body hidden inside a flared yellow dress, long narrow arms, short dangling legs, cream hands and feet, pink limbs, and garden accessories. The face is built with a cream oval muzzle sewn onto the lower front of the head. The dusty pink head cap frames the face like a monkey hood, with round side ears attached at eye level.

The doll is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds using single crochet. The dress is crocheted directly around the body, then widened into a skirt with a gentle flare. Small details such as daisies, green leaves, bees, sandals, bag flap, and hat trim are added last with embroidery and small crochet pieces.

Finished Size

  • Finished seated height: about 10.5 to 11.5 inches from top of head to bottom of feet.
  • Total height if standing straight: about 13 inches.
  • Head width including ears: about 6.5 inches.
  • Dress width across bottom hem: about 6 inches.
  • Bag size: about 1.5 inches wide and 1.75 inches tall.
  • Sun hat diameter: about 4.75 inches.
  • Gauge: 6 sc and 6 rounds equal about 1 inch using the recommended hook and yarn.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate amigurumi project. A confident beginner can also complete it by working slowly and counting every round carefully. The main shapes use basic stitches, while the detailed look comes from neat assembly, firm stuffing, embroidery, and small decorative pieces.

Materials

  • Sport or light DK cotton yarn in dusty pink for head, ears, arms, legs, and monkey body.
  • Sport or light DK cotton yarn in warm cream for face, muzzle, hands, feet, and hat.

  • Small amount of brown yarn for bag, bag strap, honey pot base, sunflower center, and facial mouth detail if desired.
  • Small amount of white yarn for daisies and sandal flowers.
  • Small amount of green yarn for leaves and vine embroidery.

  • Fiberfill stuffing.

  • Stitch markers.
  • Small scissors.
  • Sewing pins.
  • Optional: fabric glue for securing tiny flower centers, but sewing is recommended.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase, make 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over next 2 stitches

  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches

Important Crochet Notes

Work the main amigurumi parts in continuous rounds unless a pattern section says otherwise. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round and move it up as you work. Stuff the head and body firmly, but keep the arms and lower legs slightly softer so the doll can sit naturally.

Use a tight tension so no stuffing shows through the stitches. If your stitches are loose, go down one hook size. For a smooth doll like the image, avoid overstuffing the muzzle and ears. These pieces should look rounded but not bulky.

Finish stuffing firmly. FO with a long tail and close the remaining hole by weaving through the front loops of the last 12 stitches. Pull closed and secure.

Cream Face Panel

The face panel is a soft oval placed on the lower front of the head. It begins near the forehead and ends under the muzzle. Use cream yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. Work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: ch 9. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain, sc 6, inc in last ch. 18 sts.

FO with a long sewing tail. Pin the panel to the front of the pink head. The top edge should sit around R10 of the head and the lower edge around R22. Shape the panel so it looks like a rounded monkey face opening. Sew around the edge with small whip stitches.

Eye Placement

Place the eyes through the cream face panel and pink head before fully securing the panel if using safety eyes. Position the eyes between head rounds R15 and R16, about 7 visible stitches apart. They should sit above the muzzle area, evenly spaced, with a gentle cute expression.

If the safety washers are difficult to attach because the head is already stuffed, use black yarn eyes instead. Make each eye with 6 tight satin stitches over 2 stitches, then add one tiny white stitch at the upper side for shine.

Rounded Cream Muzzle

The muzzle is puffy and oval, sitting on the lower half of the cream face panel. Use cream yarn and the 2.25 mm hook.

  1. R1: ch 7. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side, sc 4, inc in last ch. 14 sts.

FO with a long tail. Lightly stuff the muzzle so it rises gently from the face. Pin the muzzle centered below the eyes, with its top edge about 2 rounds below the eyes. Sew neatly around the edge, adding a little stuffing before closing the last inch.

Nose and Mouth Embroidery

  • Use blush pink yarn or embroidery floss for the nose.
  • Make a small vertical triangle centered on the upper middle of the muzzle.
  • Work 8 to 10 satin stitches across 3 stitches wide and 3 rounds tall.
  • Bring the yarn down from the bottom point of the nose and make one straight vertical stitch about 2 rounds long.
  • Add a tiny split mouth if desired with two short diagonal brown or pink stitches.
  • Do not make the mouth too dark; the image has a soft, gentle expression.

Monkey Ears

The ears are round, slightly cupped, and attached to the sides of the head. Make two in dusty pink. Use the 2.25 mm hook.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.

  6. R6: sc 2, dec, repeat 6 times. 18 sts.
  7. R7: sc in each st around. 18 sts.

Do not stuff. Fold the ear slightly into a shallow cup, keeping the open edge curved. FO with a long tail. Attach one ear to each side of the head between R13 and R20. The upper edge should align slightly above the eyes, and the lower edge should sit near the top of the muzzle.

Body Base

The body is small compared with the head and is mostly covered by the yellow dress. Use dusty pink yarn for the inner body. Work from the bottom up.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.

  12. R17: sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  13. R18: sc 1, dec, repeat 6 times. 12 sts.

Stuff the body firmly but not as hard as the head. FO with a long tail. Sew the body under the head so the front of the body lines up with the muzzle. The doll should have a short hidden neck.

Yellow Dress Bodice

The dress is made over the body so it hugs the chest and flares into a skirt. Use sunny yellow yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. Start at the neckline.

  • For each flower, make 6 white petal stitches around one center point.
  • Add a yellow French knot or small satin stitch center.
  • Place 2 flowers on the left front, 3 across the center front, and 2 on the right front.
  • Use green yarn to embroider pairs of leaves between flowers.

  2. Repeat around for 18 petals.
  3. FO and weave in ends.

Optional Tail

The image focuses on the front of the doll, so the tail is not visible. If you want a monkey tail while keeping the front view accurate, make a soft curved tail and attach it at the back under the skirt.

  1. With dusty pink yarn, ch 31.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 30.
  3. Ch 1, turn, sc 30 again.
  4. FO with a long tail.

Fold the strip lengthwise and whip stitch it closed into a narrow tube. Sew one end to the back of the body at skirt level. Curl the tail slightly and tack the curve with a few stitches if desired.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish the pink head and sew the cream face panel onto the front.
  2. Place or embroider the eyes evenly above the muzzle position.
  3. Sew the stuffed muzzle onto the lower face panel.
  4. Embroider the pink nose and small mouth line.
  5. Sew ears to both sides of the head, slightly cupped forward.
  6. Make the body and sew it firmly beneath the head.
  7. Place the yellow dress over the body and secure the neckline.
  8. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body.
  9. Sew the legs under the body so they hang below the skirt.
  10. Add sandal straps and sandal flowers to the feet.
  11. Embroider daisies, leaves, and bees on the skirt.
  12. Sew the bag together, attach the strap, and position it diagonally across the body.
  13. Add the daisy to the bag flap.
  14. Make the honey pot and tack it near one hand.
  15. Make the head daisy and sew it near the right ear.
  16. Make the sun hat and place it beside the doll or lightly tack it to the head.
  17. Make the loose sunflower motif for display.

Detailed Facial Shaping

For the most accurate expression, shape the face gently after the muzzle is sewn on. Thread a long needle with cream yarn. Insert the needle at the lower back of the head, come out under the left eye, go back in one stitch beside it, and return to the starting point. Pull very lightly to indent the eye area. Repeat for the right eye.

Do not pull too tightly. The face should stay soft and rounded. The eye dimples should be subtle, just enough to make the black eyes sit naturally inside the cream face panel.

How to Keep the Doll Sitting Upright

  • Stuff the bottom of the body firmly before attaching the legs.
  • Do not overstuff the upper legs.
  • Sew the legs to the front underside of the body, not directly underneath the center.
  • Let the skirt flare forward slightly so it rests on the surface.
  • If needed, place a small flat plastic insert inside the bottom of the body before closing.
  • Keep the head centered over the body so the doll does not lean backward.

Decoration Placement Map

The flower decorations should look natural and balanced. Keep the largest white daisy on the head. Place the smaller white daisies across the skirt hem and on the bag. The sunflower motif should remain separate and lie near the doll, echoing the garden setting.

  • Head flower: upper right side, beside the ear.
  • Dress flowers: lower front skirt, uneven garden scatter.
  • Green leaves: between and around the white flowers.
  • Bees: two small bees on the skirt front.
  • Bag daisy: centered on the bag flap.
  • Sandal flowers: one on each outer foot.
  • Hat flowers: around yellow ribbon band.

Helpful Tips for Beginners

Count stitches at the end of every round. Amigurumi shapes depend on accurate increases and decreases. If your head becomes uneven, check that each increase round has the correct final stitch count before continuing.

When sewing parts, use pins first. Pin the ears, muzzle, arms, legs, bag, and flower before sewing permanently. Look at the doll from the front, side, and top. Small changes in angle can make the finished doll look much closer to the reference image.

  • Use invisible decreases for smooth shaping.
  • Stuff slowly in small pieces instead of large clumps.
  • Keep embroidery knots hidden inside the doll whenever possible.
  • Use the same yarn weight for all main parts.
  • Use a smaller hook for tiny accessories to keep them crisp.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the front view carefully. The head should be large and round, the cream muzzle should be centered, and the eyes should sit evenly above the nose. The ears should be balanced on both sides and slightly cupped forward.

Brush the doll lightly with your fingers to smooth the stitches. Add one or two tiny blush stitches beside the muzzle if desired, but keep the face clean and simple. Tighten any loose embroidery on the dress, especially the bee wings and small daisy centers.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean gently with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, embroidered accessories, or glued details.
  • Press water out with a towel; do not wring.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the yellow and pink colors.

  • The head is firmly stuffed and smoothly round.
  • The cream face panel is sewn flat with no puckering.
  • The muzzle is softly raised and centered.
  • The ears are attached evenly at both sides of the head.
  • The dress flares outward and covers the body neatly.
  • The skirt has daisies, leaves, and two tiny bees.
  • The sandals have yellow straps and white flowers.
  • The bag sits diagonally across the chest and rests on the skirt.
  • The honey pot is small and secure near the hand.
  • The sun hat has a cream brim, yellow ribbon, bow, and tiny daisies.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll in a dry place away from dust and moisture. If displaying it on a shelf, gently shake off dust once a week or use a soft makeup brush to clean around the face, dress embroidery, and small flowers.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue paper or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the head, ears, or hat brim. Keep the hat and loose sunflower motif in the same storage box so the full set stays together.

If the dress hem curls over time, dampen only the skirt edge with a small amount of water, shape it outward with your fingers, and let it dry flat. Avoid ironing the doll directly, because heat can flatten the soft amigurumi texture.

Check sewn accessories occasionally. If a flower, bag strap, or sandal strap becomes loose, use matching yarn and a yarn needle to stitch it back into place. Small handmade details stay beautiful longer when repaired early and handled gently.
