Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed for a decorative amigurumi doll. The finished doll is approximately 12.5–13.5 inches tall when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. The butterfly wings add width, so the final display size is about 12 inches wide from wing tip to wing tip.

The doll is worked mostly in continuous rounds, with the dress panels, ruffles, lace trims, wings, handbag, and tea accessories made separately and sewn on. The skirt is intentionally full and layered, with scalloped cream ruffles and blue floral panels to match the image.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The doll uses simple stitches, but the project has many small parts. Take your time with sewing, shaping, and surface details. The final look depends heavily on neat placement, even tension, and careful color changes.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: about 12.5–13.5 inches from shoes to top of head.
  • Head width: about 2.8 inches.
  • Dress width at hem: about 7–8 inches.
  • Wing span: about 11–12 inches.
  • Handbag height: about 2.2 inches without handle.
  • Teapot height: about 2 inches.
  • Teacup with saucer: about 1.5 inches tall including steam.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in peach skin tone.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in dusty blue.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in dark denim blue.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in cream.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in white.
  • Small amounts of medium blue, pale blue, and green for flowers and leaves.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for the doll and clothing.
  • 2.00 mm crochet hook for trims, flowers, facial details, and tea set.
  • 6 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small scissors.
  • Sewing pins.
  • Blush powder or pink yarn for cheeks.
  • Optional thin craft wire for wing shaping, handbag handle, and teapot spout.
  • Optional narrow blue satin ribbon for bows, or crochet the bows using the instructions below.

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring.
  • ch = chain.
  • sl st = slip stitch.
  • sc = single crochet.
  • hdc = half double crochet.
  • dc = double crochet.
  • tr = treble crochet.
  • inc = 2 stitches in the same stitch.
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease.
  • BLO = back loop only.
  • FLO = front loop only.
  • st = stitch.
  • sts = stitches.
  • R = round or row.
  • FO = fasten off.

Gauge

Using a 2.25 mm hook and sport weight cotton, 8 sc and 9 rounds should measure about 1 inch. Gauge is important because the doll needs firm shaping. If your fabric has gaps, use a smaller hook. If the doll becomes too stiff and difficult to work, loosen your tension slightly.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work the head, body, arms, and legs tightly so stuffing does not show.
  • The head should be larger than the body, with a soft rounded amigurumi face.
  • The dress is layered over the body, so keep the body slim and firm.
  • The wings are made in four panels, then outlined with blue edging and sewn behind the shoulders.
  • Hair is built from a fitted cap plus individual long curls and front bangs.
  • The skirt must flare outward. Do not over-tighten the hem ruffles.
  • Use pins before sewing all major pieces. This keeps the fairy balanced and symmetrical.

Stuff the torso firmly. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew the neck to the bottom center of the head, placing the head straight and slightly tilted forward. The fairy should look gentle and upright, not leaning backward.

Legs

Make 2 legs. Start with cream for the socks and shoes, then use peach for the legs. The shoes are pale blue and cream, with tiny blue flower rosettes on top.

Shoes and Legs

  1. R1: With cream yarn, ch 6. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 4, 3 sc in last ch, work on opposite side, sc 3, inc. (12)

Stuff the shoe and lower leg lightly. Keep the upper leg flexible so the doll can sit or stand with support. FO the first leg. Make the second leg but do not fasten off if joining directly to the body base.

Joining the Legs

  1. From the second leg, ch 3, join to the first leg with sc.
  2. Work 12 sc around first leg, 3 sc across the chain, 12 sc around second leg, 3 sc across opposite side of chain. (30)
  3. Work 2 rounds of sc around. (30)
  4. FO and sew this hip section under the body, centering the legs below the skirt.

The legs will be partly hidden by the layered skirt. Position the feet so they peek out under the front ruffle, with toes pointing slightly outward like the image.

Arms

Make 2 arms using peach yarn. The arms are slender and gently curved downward. Add cream lace cuffs later.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: sc 1, inc around. (9)

Slide each cuff over the hand before sewing the arm fully in place, or wrap around the wrist and stitch closed. The ruffle should flare outward over the hand.

Blue Puff Sleeves

Make 2 puff sleeves using dusty blue yarn. These sit at the shoulders and cover the upper arm join.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)

  1. Ch 26.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 25.
  3. Ch 2, sl st in next st, repeat across.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Attach dusty blue yarn and sc evenly around the panel. On the bottom edge, work a scallop trim: skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sl st in next st, repeat across. Sew the apron panel to the front center of the skirt, leaving the scalloped bottom edge free.

Lower Cream Ruffle

The bottom of the dress has a large cream ruffle that peeks out under the blue skirt. Use cream yarn and keep the stitches loose enough to ripple.

  1. R1: Ch 90, join with sl st.
  2. R2: Ch 2, hdc around. Join. (90)
  3. R3: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (180)

  1. With dusty blue yarn, ch 78.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 77. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2: hdc 77. Ch 1, turn.
  4. R3: sc 77. FO.

Edge the band with dark denim blue using sl st across the top and bottom. Sew it around the lower skirt, about 1 inch above the cream ruffle. Leave a small gap at the back if needed.

Small Blue Flowers for Skirt and Accessories

Make 18–24 small flowers. Use dark denim blue or medium blue yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. These flowers decorate the skirt panels, handbag, shoes, teapot, and teacup.

  1. R1: In MR, ch 1, sc, ch 2, repeat 5 times.
  2. Pull ring tight to form a 5-petal flower.
  3. Sl st to first sc and FO, leaving a sewing tail.

For flower centers, use pale blue or cream yarn. Make one tiny stitch in the center of each flower after sewing it in place. Add green leaves beside selected flowers using small straight stitches.

Blue Side Dress Panels

The dress has two visible blue side panels with cream edging and floral accents. Make 2 panels and place them at the left and right front sides of the skirt.

  1. R1: With dusty blue yarn, ch 18. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 17. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2: inc, sc 15, inc. Ch 1, turn. (19)

Upper Skirt Scallop Trim

Use dusty blue yarn for the scalloped trim under the cream apron. This trim appears as a row of rounded blue scallops across the upper ruffle area.

  1. Ch 52.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 51.
  3. Ch 2, 4 dc in same st, skip 2, sl st in next st, repeat across.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the scallop trim across the front of the skirt, just under the cream apron panel. The scallops should point downward and remain visible over the floral band.

Blue Waist Bows

The image has soft blue bows at the bodice and side skirt panels. You may use narrow satin ribbon, or crochet the bows below.

Crochet Bow

  1. With dusty blue yarn, ch 12.
  2. R1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 11. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2–R4: sc 11. FO.
  4. Wrap yarn tightly around the center 8–10 times to pinch the bow.
  5. Secure with a knot and leave a tail for sewing.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Make 4 bows: one small bow at the neckline, one on each side skirt panel, and one on the handbag if desired. For dangling ribbon ends, ch 16, sl st back along the chain, and attach two tails under each bow.

Hair Cap

The doll has long textured blue hair with a fitted cap, center-parted strands, curled side locks, and soft bangs. Use dark denim blue yarn with a 2.25 mm hook.

Place the hair cap on the head like a wig. The front hairline should sit around R10 of the head, slightly above the eyes. Sew around the cap edge carefully. Do not sew through the face stitches where bangs will cover the forehead.

Long Hair Strands

Make 28–34 long strands. The hair in the image is thick, ribbed, and wavy. Each strand is made as a chain with stitches back across it. Use dark denim blue yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

  1. For long back strands, ch 34, starting in second ch from hook, work 2 sc in each ch back. FO.

Side Hair Flowers

The side of the hair has small blue floral decorations. Make 3 small rolled flowers in pale blue and medium blue.

  1. Ch 12.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, work 2 sc in each ch across.
  3. Roll the spiral into a small rose shape.
  4. Sew through the base several times to secure.

Attach the flowers on one side of the hair, slightly behind the ear area. Add 2 tiny green leaf stitches if desired. Keep the flowers small so they do not overpower the butterfly wings.

Butterfly Wings

The wings are the main feature of this design. They are cream inside with blue outlines and vein details. Make two upper wings and two lower wings. Use cream yarn for the inner panels and dusty blue for the edges.

Upper Wing Panel

Make 2. Work in rows with cream yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.

  14. R17: dec, sc 7, dec. Ch 1, turn. (9)
  15. R18: dec, sc 5, dec. FO. (7)

Attach dusty blue yarn at the bottom inner corner. Sc evenly around the entire wing. At the top outer point, work sc, ch 2, sc in the same edge space to sharpen the tip. Work a second round of sc in dusty blue for a thicker border.

Lower Wing Panel

Make 2. The lower wings are smaller and rounded, placed below the upper wings.

  1. R1: With cream yarn, ch 8. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 7. Ch 1, turn.

Edge each lower wing with dusty blue in the same way as the upper wing. Shape one lower wing so it curves to the left and the other to the right. If using craft wire, place it under the second edging round and crochet over it carefully.

Wing Veins

Use dusty blue yarn and a yarn needle. Embroider curved vein lines on each cream wing panel. The image has delicate blue lines radiating from the inner wing base.

  • On each upper wing, stitch one long curved line from the inner base to the outer tip.
  • Add 3 shorter lines branching downward from the long line.
  • Add one rounded oval curve near the inner lower section.
  • On each lower wing, stitch one center curve and 2 short branches.
  • Keep the veins smooth and symmetrical on both sides.

Joining the Wings

Lay one upper wing and one lower wing together on each side. The upper wing should overlap the lower wing slightly at the inner base. Sew them together with dusty blue yarn. Then sew both wing sets to the back of the doll, starting behind the shoulders and ending near the waist.

The wings should angle upward and outward. Do not sew the outer wing edges to the dress. They need to stand freely behind the doll. Add extra stitches through the inner wing base for stability.

Handbag

The handbag is cream and blue, with a rounded handle and blue flower decorations. Use cream yarn for the bag body and dusty blue for the flap, trim, and handle.

Bag Body

Sew the flap to the back top edge and fold it over the front. Add cream edging with sl st around the flap. Sew 3 tiny blue flowers to the front of the bag and one flower to the flap. Add small green leaves with straight stitches.

Bag Handle

  1. With dusty blue yarn, ch 34.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st back along the chain.
  3. FO, leaving tails at both ends.

Sew both ends of the handle to the sides of the bag. For a firmer handle, make another chain and sew both chains together, or crochet around thin craft wire.

Teacup

The teacup is small, blue and cream, with a handle and white steam. Work tightly with a 2.00 mm hook.

  1. R1: With cream yarn, 6 sc in MR. (6)

  5. R5: Change to cream, sc around. (24)
  6. R6: sl st around. FO.

Sew or glue the teacup lightly to the center of the saucer if this is a display piece. If making for a child, sew securely and avoid small loose parts.

Steam Curl

Use white yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. The steam in the image rises in a soft spiral from the teacup.

  1. Ch 22.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, work 2 sc in each ch across.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

Twist the curl into a vertical steam shape. Sew the bottom of the steam to the tea surface inside the cup. Add a few hidden stitches higher up if you want the steam to stand upright.

Teapot

The teapot is a rounded miniature accessory in blue and cream, decorated with blue flowers. Use a 2.00 mm hook and stuff lightly.

  3. R3: BLO sc around. (12)
  4. R4: sc around. FO.

For the knob, make 5 sc in MR with dark denim blue, sl st to close, and sew to the top of the lid. Sew the lid to the top of the teapot body.

Teapot Spout

  1. With dusty blue yarn, ch 9.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 8.
  3. Ch 1, turn, sc 8 again.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Roll the strip slightly and sew along the side to form a narrow spout. Attach it to one side of the teapot, angled upward. Shape the tip gently outward.

Teapot Handle

  1. With dusty blue yarn, ch 15.
  2. Starting in second ch from hook, sl st across.
  3. FO, leaving tails.

Sew the handle to the opposite side of the spout in a rounded C shape. Add 3 small blue flowers to the lower front of the teapot and tiny green leaf stitches beside them.

Shoes Flower Details

The shoes have small blue rosettes on top. Use pale blue yarn for the rosette and dark blue for the center.

  1. Ch 8 with pale blue yarn.
  2. Work 2 sc in each ch back across.
  3. Roll into a tiny rose and stitch through the base.
  4. Sew one rose to each shoe.
  5. Add a dark blue center stitch and one small green leaf stitch beside each rose.

Facial Details

The face in the image is simple and sweet. Do not add too many details. The eyes should be small, dark, and calm. The mouth should be a short peach-pink line, not a large smile.

  • Place eyes between R16 and R17, 8 stitches apart.
  • Embroider one short mouth line between R20 and R21.
  • Add light blush under each eye with powder or pale pink yarn.
  • Add 2 tiny black eyelashes on the outside of each eye if desired.
  • Keep the nose optional; if added, make only one tiny peach stitch between the eyes and mouth.

Dress Floral Embroidery

Use the small blue flowers made earlier. Place them on the side panels, lower band, handbag, teapot, teacup, and shoes. The flowers should look scattered but balanced, matching the garden tea party theme.

  • Place 3 flowers on the left side skirt panel.
  • Place 3 flowers on the right side skirt panel.
  • Place 5–7 flowers across the lower blue band.
  • Place 3 flowers on the handbag front.
  • Place 3 flowers on the teapot body.
  • Place 1 flower on the teacup.
  • Place 1 flower on each shoe.

For leaves, use green yarn and stitch small V shapes beside selected flowers. Do not add leaves to every flower, or the design may look crowded. The image has blue flowers as the main accent, with green kept subtle.

Lace-Style Hem Edging

To create the delicate lace effect along the dress edges, use cream yarn and a 2.00 mm hook. Work this edging around the lower skirt, side panels, apron, and sleeve cuffs where extra detail is desired.

  1. Join cream yarn at any edge stitch.
  2. Ch 1, sc in same stitch.
  3. Ch 3, skip 1 stitch, sc in next stitch.
  4. Repeat across the edge.
  5. For corners, work sc, ch 3, sc in the same corner stitch.
  6. FO and weave in ends neatly.

The lace should look light and open. Avoid pulling the chain loops tight. A soft edge will make the dress look more like the image, especially around the apron and lower skirt.

Back Dress Bow Option

If you want the back to look finished behind the wings, add a small blue bow at the waist. This will be partly hidden, but it helps the dress look complete from the side.

  1. Ch 14 with dusty blue yarn.
  2. Sc 13 across. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Work 3 more rows of sc 13.
  4. FO, wrap yarn around the center to form a bow.
  5. Sew to the back waist under the wing base.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head firmly to the neck and body. Add extra stitches around the back of the neck for support.
  2. Sew the arms to the upper body and cover the joins with puff sleeves.
  3. Attach the main skirt around the waist, making sure the front center is aligned with the face.
  4. Sew the cream apron panel to the center front of the skirt.
  5. Add the blue side panels and lower floral band.
  6. Sew on the lower cream ruffle so it shows evenly under the blue hem.
  7. Attach the bodice panel and neckline trim.
  8. Sew the hair cap to the head, then attach long curls, side strands, and bangs.
  9. Add the small hair flowers on one side.
  10. Sew the wings to the back at the shoulder line and waist line.
  11. Add bows to the neckline, side skirt panels, and handbag.
  12. Place the handbag beside the doll or stitch it lightly to one hand for display.
  13. Arrange the teacup, saucer, steam, and teapot near the doll.
  14. Check the face. Add blush last so it stays clean and soft.

When the assembly is complete, gently shape the skirt outward with your fingers. Adjust the wings so they sit evenly behind the hair and shoulders. The doll should look like a blue butterfly fairy ready for a garden tea party.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not soak the doll because the layers, flowers, and wings may lose shape.
  • Keep away from strong sunlight for long periods to protect the blue yarn color.
  • Do not pull the hair curls; reshape them gently with your fingers.
  • If using wire inside the wings or accessories, this doll should be treated as a decorative item.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is centered and firmly attached.
  • Eyes are even and placed low on the face.
  • Hair cap covers the back of the head smoothly.
  • Dress layers are centered and not twisted.
  • Side panels match in height and angle.
  • Flowers are balanced across the skirt and accessories.
  • Wings are symmetrical and angled upward.
  • Tea set pieces are stuffed lightly and shaped neatly.
  • All yarn tails are woven in or hidden inside the work.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape of the fairy doll, store it upright in a dust-free display area. If the skirt becomes flattened, gently lift the ruffles by hand and let the doll rest on a flat surface. Do not iron the yarn directly.

For dust removal, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush lightly over the wings, hair, flowers, and tea set. For small stains, dab with cool water and mild soap, then press dry with a clean towel.

If the doll must be stored for a long time, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Avoid sealed plastic bags in humid areas, because trapped moisture can affect the yarn and stuffing. Keep the wings flat and supported so they do not bend.

Your Blue Tea Party Butterfly Fairy Doll is now complete, with her layered blue dress, butterfly wings, floral handbag, tiny shoes, and matching tea party set ready for a charming handmade display.
