Crochet Tutorial: Sunflower Poodle Puppy – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful sunflower poodle puppy is a soft amigurumi design with a fluffy white loop-stitch head, floppy ears, a striped sunflower sweater, yellow-trimmed shoes, a brown shoulder bag, and tiny garden accessories. The finished puppy is designed to look like the image: sweet black eyes, a small black nose, pink tongue, curly poodle texture, and warm sunflower details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern makes a seated-style poodle puppy with a rounded head, compact body, straight legs, short arms, fluffy ears, and removable-looking accessories. The body is worked in firm amigurumi stitches, while the head and ear surface use loop stitches to create the soft curly poodle texture shown in the photo.

The sweater is crocheted directly around the body in yellow and dark brown stripes. The garden set includes a sunflower hat, a brown flower bag, a tiny potted sunflower, and a small watering can. Each piece is sized to match the puppy and should not overpower the main doll.

Finished Size

  • Puppy height: about 8.5 in / 21.5 cm from feet to top of head.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm across the fluffy cheeks.
  • Body width: about 3 in / 7.5 cm across the sweater.
  • Bag: about 2 in / 5 cm tall.
  • Hat: about 3.25 in / 8 cm wide.
  • Potted sunflower: about 2.25 in / 5.5 cm tall.
  • Watering can: about 2.25 in / 5.5 cm long.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The basic body uses simple amigurumi shaping. The curly head texture requires loop stitch, but the stitch is repeated in short sections so beginners can practice slowly. The small accessories use tight stitches and careful assembly.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in white for puppy body, head, ears, arms, legs, and paws.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sunflower yellow for sweater stripes, shoe trim, flowers, and hat.
  • Worsted weight yarn in dark brown for sweater stripes, bag, flower centers, and shoe bows.
  • Small amount of pink yarn for tongue.
  • Small amount of green yarn for leaves and flower stem.
  • Small amount of terracotta orange yarn for flower pot.
  • Small amount of beige yarn for watering can.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the puppy and most accessories.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for flowers, tongue, leaves, and small details.
  • 10 mm black safety eyes.
  • 12 mm black safety nose or embroidered black nose.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Long sewing pins for positioning.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over 2 stitches
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • LOOP: loop stitch
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches
  • R: round
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Texture

Use tight stitches so stuffing does not show. With worsted weight yarn and a 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook.

The puppy head should look round and full, not flat. The loop stitches create the fluffy poodle coat. Keep each loop about 0.5 in / 1.2 cm long. Shorter loops look dense and neat; longer loops may hide the face too much.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says otherwise.
  • Stuff the legs and body firmly, but do not overstuff the arms or ears.
  • The head is attached with the face looking slightly upward, matching the sweet puppy expression in the image.
  • The ears are sewn low on the sides of the head, angled downward and outward.
  • The sweater is part of the body colorwork, not a separate removable garment.
  • The bag strap is sewn over one shoulder and rests diagonally at the puppy’s side.

How to Crochet the Loop Stitch

Insert hook into the next stitch. Wrap the working yarn around your finger to form a loop on the outside of the fabric. Yarn over, pull through the stitch while keeping the loop at the back, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook.

For this pattern, the fluffy loop side should face outward. After each loop round, gently pull the loops to even them. Do not cut the loops. The poodle texture in the image is made from rounded uncut loops, not brushed yarn.

Stuff the body firmly. The belly should be rounded, and the sweater should sit across the upper body like the image. FO with a long tail for sewing the head.

Neck Stability Insert

To keep the large fluffy head upright, make a small white neck plug. This prevents wobbling and helps the puppy look balanced.

  1. R1: With white, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3-R5: Sc around. 12 sts each round.

Fluffy Cheek Puffs

The image shows a rounded poodle muzzle and fluffy cheeks. These small surface pieces help create that soft, cloud-like face without hiding the eyes.

  3. FO with long tails.

Sew one end of the handle to the upper back of the can and the other end to the lower back. Curve it into a soft C shape.

Facial Embroidery

The face should be simple and sweet. The black eyes are glossy and round. The nose is small, centered, and slightly triangular. The pink tongue adds the playful puppy expression.

  • Use black embroidery yarn to add a tiny vertical line from the bottom of the nose to the top of the tongue.
  • Use white yarn to add one small highlight stitch beside each eye if desired.
  • Keep the mouth very small so the face stays gentle.
  • Do not add heavy eyebrows; the poodle expression should remain soft and cheerful.

Head-to-Body Assembly

Pin the head to the neck before sewing. The head should be centered, with the face looking forward and slightly upward. Because the head is larger than the body, sew securely around the neck opening at least two times.

  1. Insert the neck stability piece into the body opening.
  2. Place the head on top, covering the neck plug completely.
  3. Use the long body tail to sew through the head base and body neck stitches.
  4. Go around once with firm stitches.
  5. Go around a second time to prevent wobbling.
  6. Hide the yarn tail inside the head.

Positioning the Arms

Place the arms on each side of the sweater, just below the dark brown shoulder stripe. The arms should angle downward, with the white paws visible. The right arm can sit slightly away from the body, while the left arm rests near the bag.

  1. Pin each arm between R17 and R19 of the body.
  2. Check that both arms are even from the front.
  3. Sew around the top edge of each arm.
  4. Add two small stitches under each arm to keep it close to the body.

Adding the Shoulder Bag

Place the strap over the puppy’s right shoulder and let the bag rest along the left side. The bag should sit beside the body, not directly in front of the sweater flower.

  1. Pin the strap at the right shoulder and left side waist.
  2. Sew the strap lightly to the shoulder so it stays in place.
  3. Sew the bag side to the puppy body with two hidden stitches.
  4. Keep the front flower visible.

Adding the Hat and Garden Accessories

The hat may be displayed beside the puppy, as in the photo, or lightly placed on top of the fluffy head. If you want it fixed on the head, sew it with only three tiny stitches so the brim remains natural.

  • Place the hat slightly to one side for a casual garden look.
  • Place the potted sunflower upright beside the puppy’s arm.
  • Place the watering can near the feet, angled sideways.
  • Keep all accessories smaller than the puppy’s head so the main character remains the focus.

Optional Surface Fluff Adjustment

After finishing the head and ears, use your fingers to separate and arrange the loops. Push loops away from the eyes and nose so the face remains visible. The loops should create a rounded poodle cloud effect, not cover the expression.

  • Trim no more than 0.25 in / 0.6 cm from any uneven loop.
  • Do not brush the loops unless you want a fuzzier look.
  • Use a yarn needle to pull hidden loops forward around the cheeks.
  • Keep the top of the head full and rounded.

Exact Visual Matching Notes

To match the image closely, pay attention to the balance between the oversized fluffy head and the smaller sweater body. The head should be the widest part of the puppy. The ears should blend with the curls and sit low enough to frame the cheeks.

The sweater must show alternating dark brown and sunflower yellow stripes. Keep the yellow sections wider than the brown lines. The lower white legs should remain plain, with yellow slipper-style trim at the feet.

The sunflower details should be small and bright. One flower belongs on the sweater chest, one on the bag, one on the hat, and two tiny flowers near the ears. This repeated motif creates the same cheerful garden style shown in the image.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the head firmly to the body with the muzzle centered over the sweater front.
  2. Sew ears low on both sides of the head, angled down and slightly outward.
  3. Attach the cheek puffs and muzzle so the face looks round and soft.
  4. Sew the tongue under the nose and add a tiny black mouth line.
  5. Attach the arms to the upper sweater area.
  6. Place the bag strap diagonally across the puppy and secure it with hidden stitches.
  7. Add the sweater sunflower, shoe bows, ear flowers, and hat flower.
  8. Arrange the hat, potted sunflower, and watering can beside the puppy.

Care Notes

Spot clean the puppy with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the head because the loop stitches may lose their rounded shape. Let the toy air dry fully before storing or displaying.

If this item is made for a child, embroider the eyes and nose instead of using safety parts. Sew all accessories securely and avoid long loose straps for very young children.

  • The eyes are even and not hidden by the curls.
  • The nose is centered above the small pink tongue.
  • The ears hang softly on both sides of the head.
  • The sweater has yellow and dark brown horizontal stripes.
  • The chest sunflower is sewn to the front of the sweater.
  • The yellow shoe trim sits around both feet.
  • The brown shoulder bag rests at the puppy’s side.
  • The hat is flat, round, yellow, and decorated with a sunflower.
  • The potted sunflower and watering can are small and balanced beside the puppy.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished puppy away from direct sunlight to protect the yellow and brown yarn colors. Keep it in a dry place so the stuffing stays fresh and the white yarn remains bright.

To refresh the poodle curls, gently lift the loop stitches with your fingers. Do not comb aggressively. If a loop becomes stretched, use a yarn needle to pull the extra length toward the inside of the head.

For long-term display, place the puppy on a clean shelf or fabric mat. Keep the small garden accessories together in a shallow basket or display tray so they are not misplaced.
