This Mushroom Windmill Fairy Garden is a detailed crochet display piece with a soft round grassy base, a cream mushroom house, a red spotted cap roof, purple windmill blades, tiny windows, a yellow arched door, a bunny holding a carrot, a leafy tree, a blue pond with two ducklings, tall garden plants, stepping stones, bushes, and many small flowers.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Garden base: about 9.5 in / 24 cm wide and 2.25 in / 5.5 cm tall.
- Mushroom house with roof: about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm tall before windmill blades.
- Total display height: about 8.5 to 9 in / 21.5 to 23 cm including the tallest leaves and windmill blades.
- Bunny: about 2.5 in / 6.5 cm tall.
- Ducklings: about 1.25 in / 3 cm tall each.
Skill Level
Intermediate amigurumi. A confident beginner can make this project slowly because every piece is built from simple single crochet shapes. The detailed look comes from careful assembly, neat sewing, and small decorative pieces.
Materials
- Sport or DK weight cotton yarn in grass green, light green, dark green, cream, red, white, lavender purple, yellow, sky blue, brown, tan, orange, pink, soft pink, lilac, and a small amount of black.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
- 2.0 mm crochet hook for small flowers, spots, leaves, windows, and facial details.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Sharp scissors.
- Four 4 mm black safety eyes for bunny and ducklings, or black embroidery thread.
- Thin craft wire for tall plant stems and the tree trunk, optional but helpful.
- Plastic canvas or firm cardboard circle for base support, optional.
- Hot glue is optional, but sewing is recommended for a soft handmade finish.
Abbreviations Used
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO: back loops only
- FLO: front loops only
- FO: fasten off
- R: round or row
- st: stitch
Gauge and Tension
Use a tight amigurumi tension so the stuffing does not show through. With 2.25 mm hook and DK cotton yarn, 8 sc and 8 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. Exact gauge is less important than firm stitches and consistent sizing.
If your base grows too large, go down a hook size. If the house becomes too small for the roof, add one extra even round to the cream wall before starting the top shaping.
Important Pattern Notes
- Work in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
- Stuff pieces firmly, but do not overstuff flat parts such as leaves, stepping stones, windows, or windmill blades.
- Leave long yarn tails on decorative pieces for sewing.
- The display is assembled on the base after all pieces are crocheted.
- The mushroom house sits slightly behind center, the tree sits to the left, the pond sits to the front right, and the bunny sits at the front left holding a carrot.
Part 1: Round Grassy Garden Base
The base is a thick, rounded green cushion with a flat top and soft vertical sides. It should look like a grassy island that can hold the house, pond, tree, plants, flowers, bunny, and stepping stones.
Top Circle
Use grass green yarn and 2.25 mm hook.

Part 16: Sewing the Mushroom House to the Base
Thread a long piece of cream yarn through your needle. Sew around the bottom edge of the house, catching the BLO ridge from the body and the stitches on the grassy base. Keep the house upright and centered.
After one full round of sewing, check that the house does not wobble. Sew around the base a second time if needed. This project has many small decorations, so a strong house attachment is important.
Part 17: Adding the Door Area
Sew the yellow door to the front center of the cream house, with the flat bottom close to the grass base. The lavender door frame should sit around the outside edge and rise in a soft arch.
Sew one or two small green leaves at the bottom sides of the door. Add the tan stepping stones starting directly in front of the door. This creates the same cozy cottage entrance shown in the image.
Part 18: Adding the Windows
Sew the two blue-framed yellow windows on the lower front sides of the house. Place one window slightly left of the door and one slightly right. They should sit at the same height and follow the curve of the house body.
Sew the small upper purple window above the door. Keep it centered under the windmill. The yellow crossbars should be visible after the windmill is attached.
Part 19: Attaching the Windmill
Place the crossed purple blades on the front red roof. The upper blade points upward left, the second points upward right, the third points downward left, and the fourth points downward right. The lower blades overlap the red cap but should not cover the door.
Sew the crossed center securely. Then sew only a few invisible stitches along the underside of each blade so the blade tips still look slightly raised. Finish by sewing the yellow flower center over the crossing point.
Part 20: Building the Pond Scene
Sew the blue pond flat to the right front base. Place the two ducklings facing slightly different directions. Sew through the bottom of each duck body and into the pond several times so they stand firmly.
Add green filler sprigs, a red flower, a purple flower, and light green leaves around the pond edge. This makes the pond look set into the grass instead of simply placed on top.
Part 21: Building the Bunny Scene
Sew the bunny on the front left side of the path. The bunny should face forward and lean slightly toward the carrot. Sew the feet to the grass first, then add a few stitches through the lower body to keep it upright.
Place the carrot diagonally across the bunny body. Sew the carrot to both arms, then sew the arms to the carrot if they need extra support. Add pink cheek details after sewing so the face remains balanced.
Part 22: Building the Tree Scene
Sew the brown trunk to the left side of the base, behind the bunny and flower bed. If using wire, push the wire end into the base stuffing before sewing. Sew firmly around the trunk bottom several times.
Attach the leaf ball cluster to the top of the trunk. The balls should overlap in a rounded tree crown with light green balls toward the top and darker green balls toward the lower side. This gives depth like the photo.
Part 23: Tall Leaves and Garden Height
Arrange the tall stems on the right side. The tallest round bud should sit behind the pond and reach almost as high as the mushroom roof. The oval leaves should spread outward in different directions.
Sew or stitch the bottom of each stem into the base. Cover the stem bottoms with bush puffs and large leaves so the garden looks natural and full.
Part 24: Extra White Dots and Texture
After the roof and windmill are sewn, check the red cap. Add more white spots if the cap looks empty. The image shows a cheerful dotted mushroom roof with many small white circles across the front and sides.
Use a yarn needle to sew each white spot flat. Avoid placing a dot directly under the windmill center because the layers can become bulky.
Part 25: Flower Bed Arrangement
Place pink flowers near the bunny, yellow flowers near the front left, purple flowers near the pond, and a red flower on the right front edge. The flowers should look scattered but balanced.
For a fuller display, sew a small green leaf behind each flower before sewing the flower down. This small step creates the layered floral look shown in the garden.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Bunny face: Embroider a tiny black nose between the eyes. Add a short vertical stitch and a small smile. Add soft pink cheeks with yarn or blush.
- Duck faces: Add black eyes and orange beaks. Keep the beaks small so the ducklings stay round and cute.
- House details: Check that the door, windows, windmill, and roof spots are centered and secure.
- Garden balance: Fill any empty spaces with mini leaves, bush puffs, or small flowers.
- Shape check: Gently press the base bottom flat so the display stands without tipping.
Care Notes
This crochet garden is best used as a decorative piece. Keep it away from rough play because it includes many small sewn details. If making it for a child, embroider all eyes instead of using safety eyes, and sew every small piece very securely.
Do not machine wash the finished garden. The tall stems, small flowers, and windmill blades can lose shape in a washing machine. Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To clean dust, use a soft brush and gently sweep over the roof, flowers, pond, and base. Work slowly around the windmill blades and tall leaves so they do not bend out of shape.
For small stains, dab the area with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the piece. Press with a clean towel and allow it to air dry completely in a shaded place.
Store the garden in a breathable box or on a shelf away from direct sunlight. Long sunlight exposure may fade the red roof, purple blades, yellow ducklings, and flowers.
If the windmill blades or tall leaves flatten during storage, reshape them gently with your fingers. A light steam from a safe distance can help relax the yarn, but do not press the crochet with an iron.
Your Mushroom Windmill Fairy Garden is now complete, with its red spotted mushroom roof, lavender windmill, cozy cottage door, bunny, duck pond, tree, flowers, and tall leafy plants arranged into one sweet handmade fairy scene.
