Crochet Tutorial: Spring House and Duck Pond Diorama – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful crochet diorama creates a full spring farm scene on one soft green base. The design includes a round white cottage with a leafy flower roof, a duck pond with stones, vegetable beds, sunflowers, pumpkins, a swing, sheep, cows, bunnies, a beehive, a winding stepping-stone path, and a white picket fence.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

This is an advanced beginner to intermediate amigurumi and crochet diorama pattern. Most pieces use single crochet worked in continuous rounds. The small flowers, vegetables, animals, and fence pieces require careful counting, firm stuffing, and neat sewing.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Gauge is not critical, but the fabric should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. For the small animals and vegetables, use a hook smaller than the yarn label suggests. The base can be slightly looser because it should lie flat like a soft play mat.

Work most pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round. Stuff the cottage, animals, pumpkins, and small characters firmly, but keep leaves, flowers, fence boards, stones, and garden beds flat.

Main Green Base Mat

The base is a rectangular spring lawn with a rounded border. The image shows a bright green mat with a blue and white bead-like edging around the outer edge. Make the base first, then attach all features on top.

Placement Guide

Before sewing, place every piece on the base and take a photo. The cottage should sit in the upper center. The duck pond and tree belong at upper left. The swing belongs at upper right. The garden beds fill the lower left, while animals and fence fill the lower right.

  • Upper left: pond, stones, duck, umbrella tree, sunflowers.
  • Center: round cottage, flower roof, door, path, pumpkins, bunny character.
  • Lower left: three vegetable beds with cabbages, leafy greens, and carrots.
  • Upper right: green mound, swing, bunny, flower arch, curled vines.
  • Lower right: sheep, lambs, cows, egg basket, beehive, and picket fence.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the yellow path to the green base first, then sew all gray stones on top.
  2. Sew the cottage firmly above the path, making sure the round brown door faces forward.
  3. Add the roof flowers, vines, and leafy roof details after the house is attached.
  4. Sew pond, pebbles, duck, and umbrella tree to the upper left corner.
  5. Attach the three vegetable beds and sew all vegetables upright with small hidden stitches.
  6. Sew the swing arch to the upper right mound. Secure the swing ropes tightly so the bunny sits straight.
  7. Add animals to the right field, then curve the white fence around them.
  8. Use black embroidery thread for tiny eyes. Keep all faces simple with small dots, soft smiles, and pink nose stitches.
  9. Add sunflowers, small flowers, grass tufts, pumpkins, and final vines to cover empty spaces.

Care Notes

Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap. Do not machine wash because the tiny flowers, fence posts, animals, and swing parts may bend or loosen. Gently reshape the pieces with your fingers after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • All yarn tails are woven in or secured inside stuffed pieces.
  • The cottage stands flat and the door faces the path.
  • Animals are sewn down strongly enough for display handling.
  • The swing frame is stable and the bunny is centered on the seat.
  • The pond stones, vegetables, flowers, and fence posts are evenly spaced.
  • No plastic canvas, wire, or safety-eye backs are exposed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the diorama away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Store it flat in a clean box with tissue paper around the swing, tree, and flower arch. If dust collects, use a soft makeup brush or cool air from a hair dryer on the lowest setting.

If a flower, vegetable, or fence post loosens, sew it back with matching yarn rather than glue. Yarn stitches keep the piece flexible and safer for long-term display. For best shape, do not stack heavy items on top of the finished diorama.
