Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn in warm tan for head, body, legs, and arms.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring.

Gauge and Stitch Style

Use tight, even stitches so the stuffing does not show. For the body and head, your fabric should feel firm but not stiff. A good gauge is about 6 sc and 6 rounds per 1 in / 2.5 cm with a 2.75 mm hook.

The image has a dense amigurumi texture with clearly visible spiral rows. Work most pieces in continuous rounds unless the instructions say to join. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.

Color Notes

  • Tan: main capybara fur.
  • Brown: muzzle, inner ears, paws, soles, and hands.
  • Blue and white: sailor sweater and hat stripes.
  • Red: anchor embroidery, hat accent stripe, and life ring sections.
  • Beige: crossbody bag and strap.

Head

The head is the largest feature of the capybara. It should look round, slightly tall, and full, with the muzzle placed low on the front-left side from the viewer’s angle. Stuff the head firmly as you work.

Place the muzzle from approximately R18 to R29 of the head. It should sit low and slightly forward, not centered too high. Stuff it just enough to make it domed, then sew around the edge with small even stitches.

Nose and Mouth Embroidery

  • Use dark brown or black embroidery thread.
  • Make two short vertical nostril stitches near the upper center of the brown muzzle.
  • Add a tiny curved mouth line below the nostrils.
  • Keep the mouth simple so the face matches the soft expression in the image.

Ears

The ears are small, rounded, and sit high on top of the head. The visible ear is brown inside with tan edging. Make two ears and sew them slightly angled outward.

Sew the arms to the sides of the body around R20 to R23. The brown hands should show below the sweater sleeves.

Sailor Sweater Body

The sweater is worked as a removable-looking jacket, but it is sewn onto the capybara for stability. It has blue-and-white horizontal stripes, blue cuffs, a blue lower edge, and a red anchor on the chest.

Work the sweater flat in rows. Chain 1 at the beginning of each row and turn. The chain does not count as a stitch.

Shape the Sweater Opening

Wrap the striped rectangle around the upper body. The front opening should sit slightly off-center, creating a cardigan look. Sew the back seam only from the lower edge up for 6 rows, leaving the upper section open enough for the arms and neck.

Fold the top corners slightly outward to create a small sailor collar. Tack the folded corners down with blue yarn. The collar should sit under the head and frame the chest.

Blue Sweater Edging

  • Join blue yarn at the lower edge of the sweater.
  • Work 1 round of sc evenly around the bottom, front opening, and collar edge.
  • Place 2 sc into each outside corner to keep the edge flat.
  • FO and weave in ends.

Red Anchor Embroidery

The red anchor is centered on the white stripe area of the chest. Use red yarn or embroidery thread and a yarn needle. Keep the stitches bold and simple so they show clearly against the striped sweater.

  1. Make one vertical stitch about 5 rows tall.
  2. Add a small loop at the top using 2 curved stitches.
  3. Add a short horizontal bar across the upper third.
  4. At the bottom, make two curved diagonal stitches going left and right.

  • Cut about 6 in / 15 cm of black craft wire.
  • Wrap the wire around a round object about 1.4 in / 3.5 cm wide to form a circle.
  • Twist the ends neatly at the upper outer side.
  • Shape one end into a small curved bridge over the forehead.
  • Position the ring around the capybara’s right eye.
  • Secure it with a few tiny stitches of black thread at the top and side.

Foot Starfish Applique

The visible foot has a small starfish-like decoration. Make one rust brown flower-star and sew it onto the front sole area.

Using rust brown yarn

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. Join with sl st. (5)
  2. R2: ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st in next st of ring; repeat 5 times.
  3. FO, leaving a tail.

Sew the starfish applique onto one brown foot pad. Add one tiny cream stitch in the center for the small bright detail shown in the image.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the brown muzzle to the lower front of the head first.
  2. Embroider nostrils and mouth before attaching the head to the body.
  3. Sew the ears high on the head, slightly angled outward.
  4. Attach the head to the body with a strong seam, using the body tail.
  5. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body in a seated pose.
  6. Place sleeves on the arms, then sew the arms to the sides of the body.
  7. Wrap the sweater panel around the upper body and secure it neatly.
  8. Add the blue edging and red anchor embroidery.
  9. Attach the crossbody bag and strap.
  10. Add the monocle last so it stays clean and correctly positioned.
  11. Place the hat, fish, and life ring beside the finished capybara as photo props.

Detailed Sewing Placement

For the most accurate look, the head should sit slightly forward on the body. Do not center it too far back. The capybara in the image has a gentle seated posture, with the face looking forward and a little to the side.

The legs should be sewn at the lower front between R5 and R11 of the body. Angle the feet outward so the brown soles and toe bumps are visible. This gives the figure a relaxed sitting pose.

The arms should be placed just under the head, at the upper sides of the sweater. The hands should hang lower than the sleeves. Keep them close to the body rather than stretched outward.

The bag sits on the capybara’s left hip from the viewer’s angle. The strap crosses diagonally over the striped sweater and passes near the anchor, just like the photo.

How to Keep the Shape Accurate

  • Stuff the head more firmly than the arms and ears.
  • Keep the body base slightly flat so the toy can sit.
  • Do not overstuff the muzzle; it should be rounded but not balloon-like.
  • Pin all parts before sewing to check the proportions.
  • The head should be visibly larger than the body.
  • The ears should be small, not tall or floppy.
  • The sweater stripes should remain horizontal after sewing.

Optional Surface Crochet for Stronger Sweater Stripes

If your color changes look uneven, you can add surface slip stitches over selected stripe edges. Use the same color as the stripe and work gently across the sweater rows. Do not pull too tightly, or the sweater will pucker.

  • Use blue surface sl sts along the bottom edge.
  • Use white surface sl sts between blue rows if the stripes need definition.
  • Hide all yarn tails on the inside of the sweater.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the face from the front and side. The safety eyes should look glossy and even. The monocle should frame one eye without covering it. The muzzle should sit low and rounded, with small embroidered nostrils and a soft mouth.

Brush away loose fibers with your fingers. Shape the ears, paws, and sweater collar gently. Add a few hidden stitches anywhere that feels loose, especially around the head, arms, bag strap, and monocle.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only, especially if the monocle is made with wire.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, wire, or shell buttons are used.
  • Keep the toy away from rough handling if it is intended as a display piece.
  • For a child-safe version, replace wire and small shell pieces with embroidered or crocheted details.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head: Large, round, firmly stuffed, and slightly forward.
  • Muzzle: Brown, oval, low on the face, lightly stuffed.
  • Ears: Small, rounded, with brown inner patches.
  • Sweater: Blue-and-white striped with blue edging.
  • Anchor: Red and centered on the chest.
  • Bag: Beige with diagonal strap and shell applique.
  • Feet: Brown soles, toe bumps, and small starfish detail.
  • Props: Striped sailor hat, tiny fish, and red-white life ring.
  • Monocle: Neatly secured around one eye.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the capybara upright in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Long exposure to strong sun may fade the blue, red, and brown yarns. Keep the hat and small props in a small fabric pouch when not displayed.

For dust, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush. For small stains, dab gently with cool water and mild soap. Do not rub the stitches harshly, because amigurumi fabric can become fuzzy with too much friction.

If the toy becomes slightly flattened, reshape it with your hands. Gently press the head back into a round form, smooth the sweater, and adjust the feet so the capybara sits correctly again.
