Crochet Tutorial: Summer Frog in Yellow Striped Garden Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful summer frog crochet doll wears a yellow and white striped garden dress with bright blue straps, a matching blue crossbody purse, blue sandals with yellow flowers, a wide yellow sun hat, and a tiny woven picnic basket. The design also includes raised frog eyes with red details, a red tongue, a small yellow flower by one eye, and two tiny buzzing bees.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

Using the yarn and hook sizes listed below, the finished frog measures about 15 inches from the top of the raised eyes to the sandal toes, not including the long tapered back leg extension. The wide sun hat measures about 5 inches across, and each bee measures about 1.5 inches long.

Skill Level

This pattern is written for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. The body is made with simple amigurumi shaping. The dress, purse, hat, sandals, basket, flowers, eyes, and bees use small detailed parts, color changes, and careful sewing.

Materials

  • Green yarn: worsted weight or soft velvet-style yarn for frog body, about 180 yards.
  • Yellow yarn: worsted weight cotton or acrylic for dress stripes, hat, flowers, and bee bodies, about 120 yards.
  • White yarn: for dress stripes, frog eyes, daisies, and bee wings, about 70 yards.
  • Blue yarn: bright sky blue for straps, trim, purse, sandals, hat band, and flowers, about 80 yards.
  • Red yarn: for the tongue and red eye details, small amount.
  • Black yarn: for pupils, bee stripes, and facial embroidery, small amount.
  • Tan yarn: for picnic basket, about 35 yards.
  • Pink gingham ribbon or pink yarn: small bow for the basket.
  • Small amount of green and yellow scrap yarn: for dress flowers and leaves.
  • Hook for body: US E/4, 3.5 mm.
  • Hook for accessories: US D/3, 3.25 mm.
  • Hook for small details: US C/2, 2.75 mm.
  • Safety eyes are not required: pupils are crocheted and sewn on for a soft toy look.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Pins for positioning.
  • Scissors.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the frog has a fitted dress, sandals, and accessories. With the 3.5 mm hook, 6 single crochet stitches should measure about 1 inch across when worked firmly in continuous rounds.

Use a tight amigurumi tension so the stuffing does not show. If your fabric has gaps, go down one hook size. If your fabric is too stiff to shape, go up one hook size only for the body pieces.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

General Pattern Notes

  • Work most amigurumi parts in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff the head and body firmly. Stuff arms and legs lightly so they remain soft and flexible.
  • Leave long yarn tails on small parts for sewing.
  • The frog is made from separate head, body, arms, legs, eyes, tongue, clothing, and accessories.
  • The dress is removable only if you sew snaps to the back. For the photo-style doll, the dress is sewn lightly in place.

Main Frog Head

The frog has a large rounded green head with a slightly flattened lower edge and a subtle horizontal mouth seam. The raised eyes sit on top of the head, tilted slightly outward. Stuff the head firmly to keep the round shape visible under the dress straps.

Stuff the head firmly. Shape the lower front slightly flatter with your fingers as you stuff. This creates the calm frog expression seen in the image and gives the mouth seam a natural placement.

  1. R31: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 18 sts.
  2. R32: Sc 1, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail. Close the hole with a yarn needle.

Raised Mouth Ridge

The frog has a deep horizontal mouth line across the lower front of the head, with the red tongue coming from the right side. This ridge should sit about one third up from the bottom of the head.

  1. With green yarn, ch 34.
  2. Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 33. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Row 2: Sl st in each st across. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the strip across the front of the head from cheek to cheek. Curve it slightly downward at the center. Sew only the top edge of the strip to the head, leaving the lower edge raised to create the shadowed mouth fold.

Red Tongue

The tongue is small, bright red, and hangs from the right side of the mouth fold. It is rounded at the lower end and sewn under the mouth ridge so it looks tucked inside the frog’s mouth.

  1. With red yarn and 2.75 mm hook, ch 6.
  2. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch. Working on opposite side of chain, sc 3, inc in last ch. 12 sts around oval.
  3. R2: Sc 4, inc in next 2 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. 16 sts.
  4. R3: Sc in each st around. 16 sts.
  5. R4: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. Flatten piece. Sc through both layers across 6 sts to close.
  7. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the tongue under the right side of the mouth ridge, letting it angle slightly downward. Use two small stitches at the top only so the lower part remains slightly raised.

Frog Body

The body is smaller than the head and shaped like a soft rounded torso. It supports the garden dress and should be firm enough that the dress skirt can flare outward from the waist.

Body Pattern

  1. R1: With green yarn and 3.5 mm hook, MR, 6 sc in ring. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5: Sc 3, inc; repeat around. 30 sts.
  6. R6: Sc 4, inc; repeat around. 36 sts.
  7. R7: Sc 5, inc; repeat around. 42 sts.
  8. R8-R13: Sc in each st around. 42 sts each round.
  9. R14: Sc 5, dec; repeat around. 36 sts.
  10. R15-R18: Sc in each st around. 36 sts each round.
  11. R19: Sc 4, dec; repeat around. 30 sts.
  12. R20-R21: Sc in each st around. 30 sts each round.
  13. R22: Sc 3, dec; repeat around. 24 sts.

Stuff the body firmly at the lower half and moderately at the neck area. The top should remain slightly narrow so it can sit neatly below the large head.

  1. R23: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 18 sts.
  2. R24: Sc in each st around. 18 sts.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the body under the head. The body should angle straight downward from the center of the head. Make several strong stitches around the neck because the head is large and the doll needs support.

Long Frog Arms

The arms are slim and long, with mitten-like webbed fingers at the ends. In the image, one arm lies out to the side while the other holds the small basket. Stuff only the upper arms lightly.

Make 2 Arms

  1. R1: With green yarn and 3.5 mm hook, MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3-R7: Sc in each st around. 9 sts each round.
  4. R8: Sc 1, dec; repeat around. 6 sts.
  5. R9-R30: Sc in each st around. 6 sts each round.

Stuff the hand area lightly and leave most of the arm unstuffed. A soft unstuffed arm is easier to pose naturally beside the dress.

  1. Flatten the top opening.
  2. Sc through both layers across 3 sts to close.
  3. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Webbed Fingers for Each Hand

Attach green yarn to the outer edge of the hand. Work each finger directly onto the flattened hand edge.

  1. Finger 1: Ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sc 3, sl st into hand edge.
  2. Finger 2: Ch 6, sc in second ch from hook, sc 4, sl st into next hand stitch.
  3. Finger 3: Ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sc 3, sl st into next hand stitch.
  4. Thumb: Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc 2, sl st into side of hand.
  5. FO and weave in ends securely.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew the arms to the sides of the body at R21 of the head connection area, just below the mouth line. Angle the left arm downward and outward. Angle the right arm downward so it can hold the picnic basket handle.

Long Frog Legs

The frog legs are long, slim, and slightly curved. The feet sit inside blue sandals. The photo shows the legs extending below the dress, close together at the thighs and wider near the sandals.

Make 2 Legs

  1. R1: With green yarn and 3.5 mm hook, MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 3, inc; repeat around. 15 sts.
  4. R4-R6: Sc in each st around. 15 sts each round.
  5. R7: Sc 3, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. R8-R28: Sc in each st around. 12 sts each round.
  7. R29: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 9 sts.
  8. R30-R34: Sc in each st around. 9 sts each round.
  9. Flatten top and sc through both layers across 4 sts.
  10. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Stuff the lower leg and foot lightly. Keep the upper thigh soft so the legs can lie flat under the skirt. Sew both legs to the lower front of the body, about 3 stitches apart.

Toe Bumps for Each Foot

  1. Attach green yarn to the front of the foot.
  2. Toe 1: Ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, sc 1, sl st into foot.
  3. Toe 2: Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc 2, sl st into next stitch.
  4. Toe 3: Ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, sc 1, sl st into next stitch.
  5. FO and weave in the end.

Tapered Back Leg Extension

The photo shows a long tapered green extension behind and between the lower legs. This piece creates a playful frog-like silhouette and helps the doll look long and relaxed on the table.

  1. R1: With green yarn and 3.5 mm hook, MR, 5 sc. 5 sts.
  2. R2: Sc in each st around. 5 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 4, inc. 6 sts.
  4. R4-R6: Sc in each st around. 6 sts each round.
  5. R7: Sc 5, inc. 7 sts.
  6. R8-R10: Sc in each st around. 7 sts each round.
  7. R11: Sc 6, inc. 8 sts.
  8. R12-R15: Sc in each st around. 8 sts each round.
  9. R16: Sc 7, inc. 9 sts.
  10. R17-R22: Sc in each st around. 9 sts each round.
  11. R23: Sc 2, inc; repeat 3 times. 12 sts.
  12. R24-R27: Sc in each st around. 12 sts each round.
  13. Flatten the wide end and sc through both layers across 6 sts.
  14. FO, leaving a long tail.

Stuff only the lower pointed half very lightly. Sew the wide end to the lower back of the body, centered between the legs. Let the pointed end extend downward behind the sandals.

Raised Frog Eyes

The eyes are large white domes sitting on top of the head. Each eye has a red starburst iris and black center. They are tilted outward slightly, giving the frog a handmade garden character.

Make 2 White Eye Domes

  1. R1: With white yarn and 3.25 mm hook, MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5-R7: Sc in each st around. 24 sts each round.
  6. R8: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 18 sts.
  7. Stuff firmly.
  8. R9: Sc 1, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  9. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Red Starburst Detail for Each Eye

  3. Repeat the previous step 5 more times to make 6 pointed red rays.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Black Pupil for Each Eye

  1. With black yarn and 2.75 mm hook, MR, 6 sc.
  2. Join with sl st and FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew one black pupil to the center of each red starburst. Sew the red starbursts onto the white domes, slightly off center toward the front. Sew the finished eyes to the top of the head, about 1.5 inches apart.

Yellow Flower by the Eye

A small yellow flower sits beside one raised eye. It has round petals and a tiny blue center. Place it near the frog’s right eye for the same cheerful garden look shown in the image.

  1. With yellow yarn and 2.75 mm hook, MR, 5 sc. Join with sl st.
  2. Petal: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, ch 3, sl st in same st.
  3. Repeat petal in each of the remaining 4 sts. 5 petals total.
  4. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
  5. With blue yarn, make 3 small embroidery stitches in the center.

Sew the flower at the base of the frog’s right eye, slightly forward, so it overlaps the eye dome and the top of the head.

Yellow and White Striped Garden Dress

The dress has a yellow bodice, blue straps, a blue waist line, and a full skirt with yellow and white horizontal stripes. The lower hem is blue. This section is worked from the top down so it fits the frog body.

Bee Wings

Make 2 wings for each bee.

  1. With white yarn and 2.75 mm hook, MR, ch 2, 5 hdc in ring.
  2. Pull ring tight and join with sl st.
  3. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew two wings to the top of each bee. Embroider two tiny black eyes and a small smile on the yellow face end.

Facial Embroidery

The frog’s expression is simple. The big raised eyes create the main personality, while the mouth ridge and red tongue add a playful summer look. Keep embroidery minimal so the face stays close to the photo.

  • Use black yarn to add one short stitch near the lower center of the face if you want a tiny nostril detail.
  • Use green yarn to tack the mouth ridge at both ends so it stays curved.
  • Use red yarn to secure the tongue at the mouth opening.
  • Do not add large eyelashes or eyebrows because the original frog has a clean, soft face.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the body to the center bottom of the head, keeping the head large and slightly forward.
  2. Sew the raised eye domes to the top of the head, tilting them slightly outward.
  3. Sew the red starbursts and black pupils securely onto the white eye domes.
  4. Sew the green mouth ridge across the lower front of the head.
  5. Sew the red tongue under the right side of the mouth ridge.
  6. Attach the yellow flower beside the right eye.
  7. Sew both arms to the sides of the upper body and shape the fingers outward.
  8. Sew both legs to the lower body, then attach the tapered back leg extension behind them.
  9. Fit the dress around the frog body and close the back seam neatly.
  10. Attach the blue straps over the shoulders and sew the skirt flowers in place.
  11. Place the purse across the body and tack the strap lightly at the shoulder.
  12. Slide the sandals onto the feet and sew them in place if the toy is for display.
  13. Place the basket handle into the frog’s right hand and tack with tan or green yarn.
  14. Set the sun hat beside the frog or lightly sew it to one side of the head if desired.
  15. Place the two bees near the frog as separate decorative pieces.

Care Notes

Spot clean the frog with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking the doll because the eyes, purse, flowers, basket, and sandals include many small sewn details.

Let the doll air dry flat on a towel. Gently reshape the sun hat brim, dress skirt, sandals, and raised eyes while damp. Do not tumble dry.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, large, and firmly stuffed.
  • The mouth ridge sits horizontally across the lower face.
  • The red tongue hangs from the right side of the mouth.
  • The white eyes are raised and topped with red starburst details.
  • The dress has yellow and white stripes with a blue hem.
  • The blue purse crosses the chest diagonally and sits at the hip.
  • The sandals are blue with yellow flower accents.
  • The yellow sun hat has a blue band and blue bow.
  • The basket is tan with a small pink bow.
  • Two small bees are finished with white wings and black stripes.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished crochet frog away from direct sunlight to protect the yellow dress, blue trim, and green body color. If displayed on a shelf, support the head from behind so the neck seam does not stretch over time.

For long-term storage, wrap the frog loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Keep the hat, bees, and basket in the same box so the full summer garden set stays together.

If the skirt becomes flattened, gently lift the hem with your fingers and reshape the flare. If the hat brim curls too much, lightly steam from a distance and press it flat by hand while it cools.

Check small sewn pieces often if the doll is handled by children. Reinforce the flower, purse strap, basket handle, bee wings, and sandal straps with extra stitches whenever needed.
