Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This owl is worked mainly in continuous spiral rounds using US crochet terms. The head and body are made as one soft pear-shaped piece, wider at the lower body and slightly narrower near the face. The striped summer dress is crocheted directly over the lower body so it sits like a rounded A-line dress, matching the full, cheerful shape shown in the image.

The details are added separately and sewn on after stuffing. The eyes are oversized and slightly overlapping in the center. The beak is oval, raised, and vertically placed. The hair tufts are made from short yarn strands attached along the top corners to create the tropical feather look.

Finished Size

  • Finished owl height: about 9.5 inches from sandal base to tallest yarn tuft.
  • Body width: about 6.5 inches across the widest striped dress area.
  • Sunhat diameter: about 5.25 inches.
  • Basket height: about 2.25 inches including handle.
  • Watermelon purse width: about 2.25 inches.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The body shaping is simple, but the pattern includes many small decorative pieces. Beginners can complete it by working slowly, counting every round, and pinning the details before sewing.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work the owl head and body in one continuous piece unless instructed otherwise.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff the owl firmly, especially at the lower body, so the dress area becomes rounded and stable.
  • The dress is worked as a separate skirt band that is sewn around the lower body, allowing the stripes to stay crisp and horizontal.
  • The owl should lean slightly back once seated, with the feet pointing forward and the dress resting over the tops of the legs.
  • Pin all facial pieces before sewing so the expression remains wide-eyed and playful.

Color Placement Guide

The main owl is lime green from the top of the head down to the upper body. The dress starts just below the eyes and wraps around the belly, with a strong turquoise top band and alternating yellow, orange, and turquoise stripes below. The wings are orange and sit partly behind the dress edge.

FO and weave in all stripe ends neatly on the inside. Slide the dress over the owl body so the turquoise upper band sits around Rnds 25 to 30 of the body. The lower edge should flare outward and cover the top of the legs.

Dress Attachment

  • Pin the upper turquoise band around the body in a straight horizontal line.
  • Use turquoise yarn to sew the top edge to the owl with small whipstitches.
  • Do not sew the bottom edge down; leave it slightly loose so the dress keeps its rounded flare.
  • Place the seam at the back.

Orange Wings

Make 2. The wings are slim orange tubes, lightly stuffed, and placed on both sides of the owl. They angle downward and are partly hidden behind the dress, just like the soft orange arms in the image.

Eyelashes

  • Use black embroidery thread or thin black yarn.
  • Add 3 lashes above the outer side of each eye.
  • Each lash should be about 0.5 inch long.
  • Angle the lashes upward and outward.
  • Secure knots inside the head if possible, or hide knots under the eye edges.

Top Yarn Feather Tufts

The top of the owl has two playful tropical feather tufts made from strands of lime, yellow, orange, and green yarn. The tufts are placed at the upper left and upper right corners of the head and spread outward like soft palm leaves.

Cutting the Strands

  • Cut 8 lime green strands, each 5 inches long.
  • Cut 6 bright green strands, each 5 inches long.
  • Cut 5 yellow strands, each 5 inches long.
  • Cut 4 orange strands, each 5 inches long.

Attaching the Tufts

  5. Repeat with 10 to 12 strands on the left corner.
  6. Repeat with the remaining strands on the right corner.

Trim the strands unevenly from 2.5 to 3.5 inches long. Separate the yarn plies slightly with your fingers to make the tufts fluffy. Do not brush too much; the strands should still look like playful crochet feathers.

Blue Face Flowers

Make 2 large turquoise-blue flowers. One flower sits above the left eye, and the other sits above the right eye. Each flower has five rounded petals and a bead or small crocheted center.

Flower Base

  1. With turquoise and 3.0 mm hook, make MR.

  • If you do not use beads, make 5 sc in MR with white yarn and sew the tiny circle to the flower center.

Sew one flower above the left eye, slightly touching the lower edge of the left yarn tuft. Sew the second flower above the right eye, angled toward the strawberry hair accent.

Small Yellow Hair Flower

This small spiral flower sits near the left feather tuft, close to the blue flower. It adds the round yellow accent visible near the top of the head.

  1. With yellow, ch 16.
  2. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 30 sc.
  3. The strip will curl naturally.
  4. Roll it into a small spiral flower.
  5. Sew the base together with the yarn tail.

Attach the yellow spiral flower on the upper left side of the head, slightly above the blue flower. Add a small turquoise stitch at the center if desired.

Strawberry Hair Accent

The right side of the head has a tiny red strawberry attached beside the blue flower and under the yarn tuft. It should look like a cheerful tropical clip.

Mini Strawberry

Optional Ribbon Bows

  • Add a small turquoise ribbon behind the left yellow flower.
  • Add a small pink ribbon behind the strawberry hair accent.
  • Keep each ribbon about 1 inch wide so it does not overpower the crocheted details.
  • Sew ribbons securely with matching thread.

Watermelon Crossbody Purse

The owl wears a small watermelon slice purse across the dress. The green strap runs diagonally from the owl’s left shoulder down to the right side of the dress. The purse sits at the lower front center and has a red watermelon face with black seed stitches.

Watermelon Slice Front

Use red yarn and a 3.0 mm hook. This piece is worked as a half-circle.

  1. Row 1: Make MR, ch 1, work 6 sc into ring. Pull ring closed, turn. 6 sts.

  5. Row 5: Ch 1, sc 3, inc; repeat across. 30 sts.

Place the red front and green back together with wrong sides facing. Using green yarn, sc evenly through both layers around the curved edge and straight top edge. Before closing completely, add a tiny amount of stuffing so the purse is softly padded.

Watermelon Seeds and Smile

  • Use black yarn to embroider 5 small seed stitches on the red front.
  • Place 2 seeds on the upper left, 2 on the upper right, and 1 near the lower center.
  • Embroider a small curved smile with black yarn near the lower middle.

Green Purse Strap

  • With green yarn, ch 76.
  • Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 75 sc.
  • FO, leaving tails at both ends.

Sew one end of the strap behind the purse. Place the strap diagonally across the owl from the upper left shoulder to the lower right dress area. Sew the strap down with tiny green stitches at the shoulder and beside the purse so it stays flat.

Striped Sunhat

The sunhat sits beside the owl as a separate accessory. It has a rounded crown, a wide flat brim, and stripes in lime green, yellow, orange, and turquoise. The hat should look like it belongs with the dress but remain removable.

Hat Crown

Use lime green and a 3.5 mm hook. Work in joined rounds for neat stripes. Ch 1 at the beginning of each round; it does not count as a stitch.

  1. Rnd 1: With lime, make 6 sc in MR. Join. 6 sts.

Optional Tiny Smile on the Owl

The image focuses mostly on the eyes and beak, but a very small smile can be hidden beneath the lower beak if desired. Keep it subtle so the beak remains the main facial feature.

  • Use orange or black embroidery thread.
  • Make one tiny curved stitch under the beak.
  • Do not make the smile wider than 0.5 inch.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish and stuff the lime green owl body.
  2. Slide the striped dress over the lower body and sew the upper band in place.
  3. Sew the yellow legs under the dress.
  4. Sew one sandal to the bottom of each leg.
  5. Sew the orange wings to the sides of the upper body.
  6. Sew the white eyes to the face.
  7. Sew the black pupils onto the eyes.
  8. Sew the orange beak between the eyes.
  9. Add eyelashes and white pupil highlights.
  10. Attach the yarn feather tufts to the top corners of the head.
  11. Sew on the blue flowers, yellow flower, strawberry hair accent, and optional ribbons.
  12. Place the watermelon purse on the dress and sew down the strap.
  13. Make the sunhat, basket, and loose strawberry as separate props.

Placement Details for a Photo-Matching Look

Place the eyes low on the head, not at the very top. The top of each eye should sit around the lower edge of the decorative flowers, while the bottom of each eye should sit just above the turquoise dress band. The eyes should be close together for a sweet tropical owl expression.

The dress should cover about half of the owl’s height. The top band should begin just below the face, and the bottom turquoise band should sit over the tops of the yellow legs. Keep the stripes straight and horizontal while sewing so the dress looks neat from the front.

The wings should be mostly visible at the sides, with their top edges tucked under the dress band. Angle them down slightly. The left wing can point outward a little more, while the right wing can rest closer to the body to match the relaxed handmade look.

The purse strap should travel diagonally across the front from the owl’s left shoulder to the lower center. The watermelon slice should rest over the lower turquoise stripe. Keep the purse small enough that the dress stripes remain visible around it.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After every piece is sewn on, check the face from the front. The eyes should look balanced, the beak should sit centered between them, and the lashes should angle outward. Add extra small stitches only where needed to hold raised details in place.

  • Use lime green yarn to close any gaps around the face pieces.
  • Use orange yarn to reinforce the beak center groove.
  • Use black yarn to refresh seed stitches on the watermelon purse if they disappear into the red yarn.
  • Trim the top tufts after assembly so both sides look full but not identical.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not machine wash if beads or ribbon details are attached.
  • Let the owl air dry fully before storing.
  • Reshape the dress and hat brim gently with your hands after cleaning.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The body is firmly stuffed and stands or sits without collapsing.
  • The dress stripes are straight and evenly placed.
  • The eyes are large, round, and close together.
  • The orange beak is centered and slightly raised.
  • The sandals include toe bumps, straps, and flower accents.
  • The purse strap crosses diagonally and the watermelon sits at the front.
  • The two head tufts are colorful, fluffy, and trimmed unevenly.
  • The sunhat, basket, and strawberry accessories are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the owl away from direct sunlight to keep the lime, turquoise, yellow, and orange colors bright. If dust collects on the yarn tufts, shake them gently with your fingers instead of brushing hard. Keep the bead centers dry and avoid soaking the ribbons.

For long-term storage, wrap the owl loosely in tissue paper and place it in a breathable cotton bag. Do not compress the dress, hat brim, or basket handle. When displaying the owl, support the lower body so the legs and sandals keep their shape.
