Free Crochet Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed decorative amigurumi display. The finished piece is a miniature fairy library garden inspired by a woodland mushroom cottage. Most pieces are worked separately, stuffed lightly where needed, then sewn to a round base.
The pattern uses tight single crochet stitches for the toys and slightly taller textured stitches for the mossy garden floor. A firm gauge is important because the mushroom house, animals, bookshelves, and tiny decorations need to stand upright without collapsing.
For best results, use cotton or cotton-blend yarn. Cotton gives crisp stitch definition for the mushroom spots, books, tiny stones, window frames, and sign letters. Acrylic can also work, but the small accessories may look softer and less structured.
Finished Size
- Garden base: about 14 inches wide.
- Mushroom library house: about 7 inches tall including the cap.
- Large mushroom cap: about 7 inches wide.
- Bunny: about 3.5 inches tall seated.
- Brown woodland reader: about 3.25 inches tall seated.
- Bookshelves: about 3 inches wide and 2.25 inches tall.
- Tree: about 5 inches tall.
Skill Level
Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The main stitches are simple, but there are many small parts. Beginners can complete this project by working slowly, marking every round, and assembling one section at a time.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton yarn in moss green, olive green, cream, red, white, brown, dark brown, tan, gray, light gray, beige, blue, purple, yellow, black, and small book colors.

Gauge
Using a 3.5 mm hook and worsted cotton, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 inch. Using a 2.75 mm hook, 7 sc and 7 rounds should measure about 1 inch.
Gauge does not need to be perfect, but all amigurumi pieces should be firm enough that stuffing does not show through. If your stitches are loose, go down one hook size.
Important Construction Notes
- Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless instructed otherwise.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
- Stuff the mushroom house firmly at the bottom and lightly near the top.
- Stuff the animals lightly so they can sit naturally on the garden base.
- For a display piece that matches the image, sew every accessory securely to the base.
- Do not overstuff the mushroom roof. It should look rounded and dome-like, not pointed.
Color Placement Guide
The garden base is moss green with brown edging. The mushroom house has a cream cylindrical stem, a red dome roof, and many white round spots. The front door is brown and round with a small tan button detail. The path is brown with gray and cream stepping stones.
The left woodland reader is brown with a blue sweater and a red book. The right figure is a white bunny holding an open book. The bookshelves are brown with colorful tiny books. The tree is dark brown with mixed green leaves and a small yellow lantern.

With brown yarn, join anywhere on the edge. Work one round of crab stitch, or reverse single crochet, around the outside. This creates the neat brown border visible around the garden.
Optional Firm Base Insert
Trace the finished crochet circle onto cardboard or plastic canvas. Cut the insert slightly smaller than the crochet base. Make a second plain green circle by repeating Rounds 1 to 20 without texture. Place the insert between both circles and sc the layers together with brown yarn.
This step helps the mushroom house, bookshelves, tree, and animals stand neatly. It also keeps the display flat on a table, similar to the photographed garden scene.

FO. Use the yarn tail to sew a center vein down the leaf. Make 6 to 8 leaves and attach them flat to the garden base.
Small Front Fence Piece
The small curved wooden piece at the front of the path can be made as a tiny rustic sign or fence board.
- With tan yarn, ch 12.
- Sc in second ch from hook and across. 11 sts.
- Rows 2 to 4: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 11 sts.
- FO and border with brown sc around all sides.
Sew this small board near the front of the path, angled slightly upward. It gives the garden a handmade fairy entrance detail.
Extra Tiny Book Stack
Make 4 to 6 small books and stack them near the bookshelves or table. Each book is a simple rectangle.
- Ch 6.
- Sc in second ch from hook and across. 5 sts.
- Rows 2 to 3: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 5 sts.
- FO.
Use different colors for each book. Add a cream line along one edge to look like pages. Sew the books together in a small uneven stack.
Placement Plan
- Place the mushroom house slightly behind the center of the garden base.
- Attach the red mushroom cap so it overhangs the cream stem evenly.
- Sew the round door to the front center of the house.
- Place one arched window on each side of the door.
- Attach the brown path from the door to the front edge.
- Sew gray and cream stones on top of the path.
- Place the Fairy Library sign to the left of the path.
- Place the brown woodland reader on the left side, holding the red book.
- Place the bunny on the right side near the bookshelves.
- Place two bookshelves to the bunny’s left and right, angled slightly toward the viewer.
- Place the tea table near the front right with red mushrooms beside it.
- Place the tree at the back right with the lantern hanging from one branch.
- Add lavender, shrubs, acorns, leaves, and mushroom clusters around the open spaces.
Detailed Assembly Steps
- Block the garden base lightly by steaming from a distance. Do not press the texture flat.
- Pin the mushroom house to the base before sewing. Make sure the door faces the front path.
- Sew the mushroom stem to the base using cream yarn. Stitch around the bottom twice for strength.
- Sew the red cap to the top of the stem. Add a few hidden stitches between the cap and stem so it does not wobble.
- Sew all white spots to the cap. Place the largest spots first, then fill gaps with small spots.
- Sew the door to the mushroom stem. Add the door knob after the door is fully attached.
- Sew the windows to the side walls. Keep them slightly curved to follow the mushroom shape.
- Sew the path to the base. Add the stones one by one after the path is secured.
- Sew the sign post into the garden base. Add a hidden stitch from the sign board to nearby moss if it leans.
- Attach the tree trunk firmly. Sew through the base several times because the branches and lantern add weight.
- Sew leaves to the branches, then sew the lantern under one branch.
- Attach books to the shelves before sewing the shelves to the base.
- Sew the bunny in a seated pose next to the shelves. Add the open book last.
- Sew the brown woodland reader to the left side. Position the red book so it faces upward.
- Sew the table to the right front area. Add the plate, cookies, and cup on top.
- Add mushroom clusters, shrubs, lavender, acorns, and fallen leaves to fill the garden naturally.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Use black embroidery thread for both animal faces. Keep the stitches small and gentle. The bunny should have a sweet tiny smile, while the brown woodland reader should have a calm reading expression.
Check that the animals sit securely and that their books are attached to both arms. Add small hidden stitches from the animals to the garden base so they do not tip forward.
For the mushroom house, add extra shaping stitches under the red cap if the roof edge lifts too much. The roof should look like a smooth rounded mushroom dome with visible white spots from all angles.
Care Notes
- Use this project as a decorative display, not as a baby toy.
- Keep the piece away from moisture because cardboard or plastic inserts may warp.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To clean the finished fairy library garden, use a lint roller very lightly on the flat base and a soft paintbrush around the small accessories. Work slowly around the bookshelves, lantern, flowers, and animal faces.
If a spot needs cleaning, dab it with a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak the crochet. Let the piece air dry completely on a towel, keeping the mushroom house upright and the garden base flat.
For long-term storage, wrap the piece loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Avoid stacking heavy items on top of the mushroom cap, tree, or bookshelves. Store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight to help preserve the bright red roof and green garden colors.
