Crochet Tutorial: Woodland Tree Stump Bakery – Free Crochet Pattern.

This woodland crochet scene features a cozy tree stump bakery with bark-textured walls, a mossy green roof, tiny birds, flower details, hanging lights, pastel bunting, a bakery window, an arched door, a bear baker, a squirrel helper, mushrooms, bread baskets, stepping stones, flowers, berries, and a round forest base. The finished piece is designed as a detailed tabletop amigurumi display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern uses US crochet terms and is worked mostly in continuous rounds. The main bakery is a tall cylindrical tree stump with raised vertical bark lines, a scalloped moss roof, two side branches, and many small woodland bakery accessories arranged around the base.

The design is built in separate pieces, then sewn together. This keeps the stump sturdy, makes the small details cleaner, and allows you to place each flower, mushroom, pastry, and animal exactly where it belongs in the scene.

Finished Size

  • Full display base: about 12 in / 30.5 cm wide.
  • Tree stump bakery: about 8 in / 20 cm tall, not including birds.
  • Bear baker: about 3.25 in / 8 cm tall.
  • Squirrel: about 2.75 in / 7 cm tall.
  • Large bread cart: about 3.75 in / 9.5 cm wide.

Skill Level

Intermediate. Confident beginners can make this project if they work slowly and follow each section in order. The most important skills are magic ring, single crochet, increasing, decreasing, working in the back loop, surface crochet, simple embroidery, and neat sewing.

Materials

  • Sport or DK weight cotton yarn in bark brown, dark brown, moss green, light green, cream, white, tan, beige, red, gray, lavender, yellow, pink, mint, peach, blue-gray, and black.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
  • 2.0 mm crochet hook for tiny flowers, birds, pastries, bunting, and face details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small piece of clear plastic sheet for bakery window.
  • Thin cardboard or plastic canvas for the base, stump floor, window support, and cart support.
  • 6 mm safety eyes for the bear.
  • 4 mm safety eyes or black embroidery knots for birds and squirrel.
  • Brown, black, and white embroidery thread.
  • Optional: two small warm white craft beads for hanging lamps.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge

Exact gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. With DK cotton and a 2.5 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. If your stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
  • Stuff the stump firmly enough to stand straight, but do not overstuff the bark texture.
  • Use cardboard or plastic canvas inside the base and stump to keep the display flat.
  • Pin all details before sewing. This scene depends on careful placement.
  • Use the same hook size throughout if you want a softer look, or use the smaller hook for crisp tiny accessories.

Part 1: Round Woodland Grass Base

The base is a flat green circle with a raised gray stone border. It holds the tree stump, table, mushrooms, flowers, cart, and stepping stones.

Part 20: Placement Guide

Use this guide before final sewing. The stump should sit slightly behind the center of the round base, leaving enough room in front for the path, table, mushrooms, and small decorations.

  • Tree stump bakery: sew to the base center, slightly toward the back.
  • Door: front right side of the stump.
  • Window: front left side of the stump.
  • Bear baker: right of the door, facing forward.
  • Bread cart: far right side beside the bear.
  • Squirrel: front of door, slightly left of the bear.
  • Tea table: front left side.
  • Large red mushrooms: near the tea table and front center.
  • Wood slice path: starts at the door and curves toward the front.
  • Lavender and berries: left back side near the stump.
  • Flowers: spread in small clusters, not evenly spaced.
  • Birds: on top of the moss roof, one left, one center, one right.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the finished tree stump bakery firmly to the grass base. Stitch around the bottom twice so it does not lean.
  2. Attach the moss roof, then add roof leaves, flowers, and birds.
  3. Sew the branches to the stump sides and add hanging lamps under each branch.
  4. Attach the window and door. Make sure the door sits low enough to touch the base.
  5. Sew the bear baker, squirrel, bread cart, mushroom table, red mushrooms, and stepping stones in place.
  6. Add flowers, berries, rocks, acorns, and small mushrooms last. These details should fill empty spaces naturally.
  7. For the bear face, embroider a dark brown oval nose, a short mouth line, and two tiny cheek stitches if desired.
  8. For the squirrel face, use black eye knots, a small nose, and a single cream stitch on each cheek.
  9. For the birds, keep the eyes very small so the faces stay soft and cute.

Care Notes

Keep the finished tree stump bakery as a decorative piece. Because it includes many tiny sewn details, it is not recommended for babies or rough play. Display it on a shelf, desk, craft table, or seasonal woodland display.

To reshape the bakery, gently press the stump upright with both hands. Do not pull the branches, garland, lamps, or small flowers. These parts are decorative and can loosen if handled too often.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • All bark lines are sewn flat and do not snag.
  • The stump stands straight on the base.
  • The moss roof overhangs evenly with a scalloped edge.
  • The window has visible tiny bread and cupcakes inside.
  • The arched door has a knob and bakery sign.
  • The bear has a chef hat, apron, muzzle, and clear face details.
  • The squirrel has a curled tail and bread bag.
  • The cart is filled with baguettes and rolls.
  • The path includes one large wood slice and several smaller slices.
  • Flowers, berries, mushrooms, stones, birds, lamps, and bunting are securely attached.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean only. Use a soft damp cloth with cool water and gently dab the stained area. Do not soak the piece, because cardboard or plastic canvas inside the structure may bend or shift.

Let the display air dry completely in a shaded place. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, especially on the green roof, red mushrooms, and pastel bunting, because bright colors may fade over time.

Store the bakery in a dust-free box when not displayed. Place tissue paper around the branches, birds, bear, squirrel, and cart so the small pieces do not flatten. Keep the piece away from moisture, pets, and heavy objects.
