Crochet Tutorial: Acorn Station Woodland Train Garden – Free Crochet Pattern.

This charming crochet scene recreates a tiny woodland train station shaped like an acorn, set on a soft moss-green garden base. The design includes an acorn-roof station house, oval train track, miniature locomotive with flower and acorn cars, bunny passenger, fox station helper, lamps, bench, clock, fences, mushrooms, tree, ferns, autumn leaves, stones, and small woodland animals.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This project is built as a detailed crochet diorama. Each piece is made separately, stuffed where needed, then sewn or glued to the base in layers. The base is a firm rectangular garden mat with raised edges. The station sits slightly behind center. The track forms an oval around the station, and the train rests at the front curve.

The finished look depends on tight stitches, careful stuffing, and neat shaping. Use a smaller hook than your yarn label suggests. The sample proportions are written for sport weight cotton yarn, but you may use DK yarn for a larger display piece.

Gauge and Stitch Notes

For the garden base, 6 sc x 6 rows should measure about 1 inch using the 2.75 mm hook. For amigurumi parts, the stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. If your piece looks loose, change to a smaller hook.

Most round pieces are worked in continuous spirals unless stated otherwise. Mark the first stitch of every round. Stuff small pieces gradually. For the cleanest look, join decorative appliqués with sewing thread or matching yarn using tiny whip stitches.

Garden Base

The base is a thick rectangular moss mat with raised sides. It should look like a grassy platform sitting on the wooden table in the image.

Main Grass Rectangle

Use moss green and 2.75 mm hook.

  1. Ch 71.
  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 70 sc.
  3. R2-R58: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. 70 sc.
  4. R59: Ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st. Aim for 70 sts on long sides and 58 sts on short sides, plus corner stitches.
  5. R60: BLO sc around to create a firm edge line. Join.
  6. R61-R64: Sc around. Join each round. FO, leaving a long tail.

Cut plastic canvas or cardboard slightly smaller than the base. Place it under the crochet rectangle before closing the bottom if you want a stiff display. For a soft base, skip the insert and lightly stuff the side walls only.

Raised Base Bottom

Make a second rectangle with moss green.

  1. Ch 71.
  2. R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 70 sc.
  3. R2-R58: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 70 sc.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Place this rectangle under the first piece. Whip stitch around the edges, inserting the stiffener before the final side is closed. The finished base should be about 13 inches by 10 inches, with a rounded raised edge.

Acorn Station Building

The station is a short beige cylinder with an arched doorway and a large brown acorn-cap roof. It sits slightly behind the center of the garden, leaving space for the train in front.

Place the basket between the bunny and the yellow train car. Keep it low so it does not hide the bunny.

Assembly Layout

Before sewing permanently, place every item on the base. The station should sit behind the center of the oval track. The front of the door faces the train. The train rests on the front track curve, with the locomotive on the left, flower car in the middle, and yellow acorn car on the right.

  1. Sew the acorn station to the base first. Place it slightly back from center.
  2. Sew the oval track around the station, keeping the front curve wide enough for the train.
  3. Attach the engine and cars on the front curve of the track.
  4. Sew the bench and left lamp near the station door.
  5. Sew the bunny chair and suitcase to the right of the door.
  6. Add the clock and tree behind the right side of the station.
  7. Attach fences along the back left and back right edges.
  8. Add ferns, mushrooms, stones, leaves, basket, and tiny animals last.

Use sewing thread for the tiniest pieces if yarn feels too bulky. Keep all knots hidden underneath the base or inside stuffed pieces. Check the scene from the front often so the station sign, train, bunny, and fox remain clearly visible.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Use black embroidery thread for the fox, bunny, mouse, squirrel, and hedgehog eyes.
  • Add tiny white eye highlights with one small straight stitch if desired.
  • Keep facial features small so the animals stay cute and soft.
  • Brush away loose fibers before final photos or display.
  • Sew the acorn roof securely through the lower rim so it does not tilt.

Care Notes

This crochet garden is best used as a decorative display, not as a baby toy. Many pieces are small and firmly attached, but they can loosen with rough handling. Keep the finished scene away from moisture, direct sunlight, and pets.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The station is centered and standing straight.
  • The acorn roof overhangs evenly on all sides.
  • The sign reads Acorn Station clearly.
  • The track forms a smooth oval around the building.
  • The train cars are connected and filled with flowers, acorns, and mushrooms.
  • The bunny, fox, lamps, bench, clock, tree, fences, ferns, leaves, stones, and animals are all attached securely.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To clean, use a soft dry brush and gently dust the roof, track, train, and garden base. Do not machine wash. For small stains, dab carefully with a slightly damp cloth and let the piece air dry completely.

Store the diorama in a box with tissue paper around the roof, lamps, tree, and fence areas. Avoid pressing heavy objects on top. For long-term display, rotate the piece occasionally so the colors fade evenly and the front details stay fresh.
