Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terminology. The doll is worked mostly in continuous rounds for a clean amigurumi shape. The clothing and accessories are made separately, then sewn onto the body so the final doll has the layered handmade look shown in the reference image.
The finished doll is designed with a large rounded head, compact torso, thin dangling arms and legs, small sandals, and many picnic garden details. Take your time with the sewing stage because the face, eye angle, jacket placement, and accessories create the personality of this doll.
- Finished size: approximately 10.5 to 12 inches tall when made with sport or DK weight yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
- Skill level: intermediate, but confident beginners can follow slowly.
- Construction: head, body, limbs, clothes, wings, and accessories are crocheted separately and assembled at the end.
- Style: firm amigurumi crochet with visible tiny stitches, soft shaping, and decorative embroidery.

Gauge and Crochet Notes
Gauge is not extremely strict, but your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. The fly head and body need firm shaping, while the jacket, shorts, hat, tote bag, and basket can be slightly softer.
- Use a smaller hook for the amigurumi body.
- Use a slightly larger hook for clothes if they feel too tight.
- Stuff the head firmly, especially around the eye placement area.
- Do not overstuff the arms and legs. They should remain slim and flexible.
- Pin all large pieces before sewing to check the angle and proportions.
Main Doll Body
Large Round Gray Head
The head is the most important shape in this doll. It should look like a large rounded fly head, wider than the body, with a slightly flattened front where the eyes sit. Work in continuous rounds with gray yarn.

FO, leaving a long tail. Close the hole securely. Do not trim the tail yet if you want to use it for extra shaping. Use a needle to pass through the head and pull gently to round the head evenly.
Indented Face Lines
The head in the image has soft, slightly uneven crochet texture. To create the same handmade look, use gray yarn and a long needle to make gentle shaping lines near the sides of the face.
- Insert the needle at the lower back of the head.
- Bring it out near the left eye area.
- Pull gently, then return to the back.
- Repeat near the right eye area.
- Do not pull too tightly. The head should stay round, not pinched.
Body Torso
The body is smaller than the head and hidden partly by the shirt, jacket, and shorts. Use gray yarn for the base body. Work from the neck downward.

Stuff the body firmly enough to hold the head. Leave the bottom slightly rounded. FO with a long tail for sewing. The top of the body should be centered under the head, but the doll should look relaxed, not stiff.
Long Slim Legs
The legs are thin and dangling in the photo. Make two with gray yarn. Stuff very lightly or leave mostly unstuffed so the legs hang naturally from the bench.

Gray Feet
Make two feet in gray. The sandals will be added later, so the foot shape should be small and oval.

Stuff lightly. FO, leaving a tail. Sew one foot to the end of each leg. Angle the feet slightly outward, as shown in the image, so the sandals will sit naturally.
Thin Arms
Make two long, slim arms with gray yarn. The arms come out from the jacket sleeves and hang down gently.

Do not overstuff. Flatten the top and crochet 4 sc through both layers. FO with a long tail. Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body after the shirt is in place or sew them first if you prefer the jacket to cover the shoulder seams.
Large Fly Eyes
Cream Eye Circles
The eyes are oversized and round, almost like two cream-colored domes on the front of the head. Make two with cream yarn.

Stuff each eye lightly so it becomes a raised dome. FO with a long tail for sewing. The eyes should be placed high on the front of the gray head, touching or nearly touching at the center.
Pupils
Use small black safety eyes or crochet small black circles. If crocheting, make two.
- R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
- Sl st into first sc and FO.
Sew each black pupil slightly toward the inner lower area of each cream eye. This gives the fly a curious garden character rather than a blank stare.
Red Vein Embroidery
Use red embroidery thread or thin red yarn to stitch the fine lines on each cream eye. These lines should radiate gently from the center, similar to the reference.
- Make 6 to 8 short red stitches on each eye.
- Do not make the lines perfectly symmetrical.
- Keep the lines slightly curved when possible.
- Secure the thread behind the eye before sewing the eye to the head.
Sewing the Eyes to the Head
Pin both eyes before sewing. They should sit side by side on the front of the head, with the outer edges extending toward the sides. Sew around the base of each eye with cream yarn, keeping the domes raised.
- Place the eyes between head rounds 10 and 21.
- Leave only a tiny gap between the two eyes.
- Angle the eyes slightly outward to create the fly face.
- Add extra stuffing under the eyes before closing the final stitches if needed.
Red Proboscis
The long red proboscis hangs down from between the eyes. It is narrow, slightly curved, and reaches toward the jacket. Use red yarn.
- Ch 16.
- R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (15)
- Ch 1, turn.
- R2: sc across. (15)
FO, leaving a long tail. Roll the strip lengthwise into a narrow tube and sew the long edge closed. Attach the top between the two eyes, slightly below the center point. Let the bottom hang naturally. Add one or two small shaping stitches if you want it to curve gently to the left.
Striped Shirt
The shirt is visible under the open jacket. It has narrow pale stripes in white, yellow, and warm beige. Work flat and sew it around the body. Use a slightly larger hook if needed.
Shirt Body Panel

FO, leaving a long tail. Wrap the shirt panel around the body with the opening at the back. Sew the back seam. The lower edge should tuck slightly into the shorts, while the upper edge sits below the head.
Shirt Neck Trim
Join white yarn at the top edge of the shirt. Work 24 sc evenly around the neckline. Sl st to join, FO, and weave in ends. This small trim keeps the shirt neat below the large fly head.
Blue Shorts
The shorts are bright turquoise blue and sit high at the waist. They have two short leg openings visible beneath the jacket and shirt.
Shorts Waist

Slide the shorts onto the body before attaching the legs if possible. If the legs are already attached, leave the back seam open and sew it closed around the waist. Add a small tan button at the front center.
Denim Jacket
The jacket is the main clothing feature. It is medium denim blue with a collar, sleeves, front panels, little buttons, and a tiny bee patch. Work the jacket flat so it stays open in front.

Basket Weave Texture
To create a handmade woven look, use brown yarn and stitch short horizontal lines across the basket body. Place the lines on alternating rounds so the basket looks textured without becoming bulky.
- Make short stitches over 2 crochet stitches at a time.
- Skip one stitch between each woven mark.
- Use 3 or 4 rows of embroidery around the basket.
- Keep the handles plain so they remain neat.

Fold the straight top edge slightly and sew a few stitches to keep the wedge firm. Embroider 5 small black seed stitches on the red section.
Optional Small Picnic Details
The reference image includes many tiny handcrafted touches. These extra details help the doll feel complete and photo-ready.
- Add a few tan stitches on the jacket as decorative seams.
- Add a small yellow shirt stripe visible at the neckline.
- Use brown embroidery to create a tiny pocket button on the tote bag.
- Add gray stitches at the ankles to blend the legs into the sandals.
- Add small black stitches at the wing base to make the wings easier to see.
Assembly Order
Assembly is where the doll gains its final look. Work slowly, pin everything first, and compare the overall silhouette as you sew.
- Sew the gray body to the bottom of the large gray head. The head should look oversized compared with the body.
- Attach the legs to the lower body so they hang down from a seated position.
- Sew the feet to the legs, angled slightly outward.
- Put the striped shirt on the body and sew the back seam closed.
- Put the blue shorts on the lower body and secure the waist with a few hidden stitches.
- Place the denim jacket around the body and slide the arms through the sleeves.
- Sew the arms to the body under the jacket shoulder area.
- Attach the jacket lightly at the shoulder and side seams so it stays open in front.
- Sew the large cream eyes to the head.
- Add pupils and red vein embroidery if not already finished.
- Sew the red proboscis between the eyes.
- Sew the wings to the back of the jacket.
- Add the flower and leaves to the top of the head.
- Place the crossbody tote bag over the doll and tack the strap at one shoulder if needed.
- Sew sandals securely to the feet.
- Place the hat, basket, and watermelon slice as separate picnic props.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all pieces are attached, check the face from the front and side. The eyes should be large, raised, and slightly uneven in a charming handmade way. The red proboscis should hang from the center, and the gray head should remain rounded.
- Add extra red eye veins only if the eyes look too plain.
- Use black thread to secure the pupils firmly.
- Use gray yarn to hide any visible sewing gaps around the eye bases.
- Check that the flower headpiece sits above one eye area, not directly in the center.
- Make sure the wings are visible behind the jacket but not too stiff.
For the clothing, adjust the jacket collar so it folds outward. The jacket should remain open enough to show the striped shirt. The shorts should sit just below the shirt, and the legs should hang freely.
Care Notes
This doll has many small stitched details, so gentle care is best. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the doll because the jacket, wings, buttons, and embroidered details can shift or lose shape.
- Do not machine wash if using tulle wings or wooden buttons.
- Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
- Reshape the hat brim and wings while damp if needed.
- Keep away from pets if small buttons are used.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, store the doll sitting upright or lying flat in a dry place. Avoid crushing the eyes, wings, hat brim, and basket handles. If the doll is used for display, dust it gently with a soft brush.
If the stitches loosen over time, use a yarn needle to tuck the tail back inside the piece. For embroidered eye veins, secure any loose thread with a tiny hidden knot behind the eye or under the nearest cream stitch.
- Keep the doll out of long direct sunlight to reduce fading.
- Store small props in a breathable fabric bag.
- Do not hang the doll by the wings or bag strap.
- Refresh the jacket shape by smoothing it with your fingers.
- Keep the watermelon slice and hat flat when stored.
Your Garden Fly Picnic Doll is now complete, with its oversized fly eyes, garden outfit, tiny picnic props, and cheerful handmade details ready for display.
