Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi-style project. The finished doll is built with firm single crochet fabric, visible rounded shapes, soft stuffing, and sewn-on accessories so the final result looks like a handmade garden giraffe doll sitting on a wooden table.

The doll in the photo has a long seated body, thin legs hanging down, a large smiling face, and many small decorative garden details. Work slowly, pin pieces before sewing, and keep your stitches tight so the stuffing does not show through.

  • Finished size: about 12 to 14 inches tall when seated, depending on yarn and tension.
  • Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: separate head, muzzle, neck, body, limbs, clothing, bag, shoes, flowers, hat, pot, and watering can.
  • Main technique: continuous rounds for amigurumi, joined rows for clothing, and surface embroidery for details.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in golden yellow, mustard yellow, brown, dark brown, white, pink, blue, light blue, denim blue, beige, tan, cream, green, red, black, purple, lavender, and small amounts of orange.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for firm amigurumi pieces.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook for jacket, skirt, bag, hat, and watering can if you want slightly softer accessories.
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing.
  • Two 12 mm safety eyes, or black yarn and felt if making for a young child.
  • Black embroidery thread for smile lines, teeth divisions, eyelashes, and ladybug details.
  • White embroidery thread for eye highlights.
  • Two small wooden or brown crochet buttons for the jacket.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and optional blush.
  • Optional pipe cleaner or craft wire for the sunflower stem only, not for a toy intended for small children.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Important Gauge and Shape Notes

The exact look depends on firm tension. For the head, neck, legs, and hands, use the smaller hook and stuff firmly. For the blue jacket, skirt, bag, and hat, use the larger hook only if your fabric feels too stiff. The image shows clear crochet texture, so avoid making the stitches too loose.

When shaping the giraffe head, the large white smile muzzle is the main feature. The muzzle should sit across the lower front of the head and project outward. The pink gum strip sits above the white muzzle like a curved scalloped band, while the black smile lines divide the teeth.

Main Giraffe Head

Use golden yellow yarn. Work in continuous rounds. The head is shaped like a rounded giraffe head with a large lower front area, slightly wider cheeks, and a smooth crown hidden partly by the yellow head cap.

Pause and stuff the head firmly. The lower front should be rounded but not flat, because the white muzzle will be sewn over it. Keep the opening at the bottom neat for attaching the neck.

  1. R24: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.
  2. R25: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.

FO with a long tail. Do not close the bottom completely if you prefer to sew the neck into the opening. The face side will be chosen after the muzzle is pinned.

Large White Smile Muzzle

Use white yarn. This piece is a wide oval panel that covers most of the lower face. It must be large because the photo shows a huge toothy grin taking up the front of the head.

  1. R1: ch 9. Starting in the second ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of the chain, sc 6, inc in last st. 18 sts.
  2. R2: inc, sc 6, inc 3 times, sc 6, inc 2 times. 24 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 6, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 6, repeat sc 1, inc two times. 30 sts.

  5. R5: sc around. 36 sts.
  6. R6: sc 12, hdc 12, sc 12. 36 sts.
  7. R7: sc around. 36 sts.

FO with a long sewing tail. Lightly stuff only the center of the muzzle so it curves outward. Pin it to the lower front of the head, with the long oval placed horizontally. Sew around the edge, adding a little extra stuffing before closing.

Pink Gum Band Above the Teeth

Use soft pink yarn. This curved strip sits directly above the white muzzle and slightly overlaps the top edge. The lower edge should look gently wavy like the pink gum line in the photo.

  1. R1: ch 19, starting in second ch from hook, sc 18. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2: sc 2, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 2, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 2. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R3: sc across all 18 sts.

FO with a long tail. Pin the straight edge across the top of the muzzle. Let the slightly curved edge point downward. Sew with small stitches so the band looks smooth and secure.

Smile and Tooth Embroidery

Use black embroidery thread or split black yarn. The photo has a very wide curved grin with vertical tooth lines and one long curved smile line at the bottom. Embroider after the muzzle is sewn on.

  • Stitch one large curved smile line from the left cheek edge to the right cheek edge across the lower white muzzle.
  • Add one vertical line down the center from the pink gum band to the smile curve.
  • Add two shorter vertical tooth lines on each side, spacing them evenly.
  • Add a small curved line at each side of the mouth to create the joyful raised grin.
  • Keep the lines thin and clean. Do not pull too tightly or the muzzle will pucker.

Eyes

The eyes in the image are large, raised, white circles placed high on the head above the pink gum band. Each eye has a bright blue iris, black pupil, and tiny white highlight. Make two.

White Eye Bases

Use white yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5: sc around. 24 sts.

FO with a long tail. Lightly stuff each eye so it becomes slightly domed.

Blue Iris and Black Pupil

Use light blue yarn for the iris.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO.

Use black yarn for the pupil.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO.

Sew the blue iris onto the white eye base, then sew the black pupil slightly toward the lower center of the iris. Add a small white embroidered stitch at the top edge of each pupil for the shiny highlight. Sew both eyes onto the upper front of the head, close together, with a playful slightly crossed look.

Giraffe Ears

Make two with golden yellow yarn. The ears are rounded and leaf-shaped, wider at the center and slightly pointed at the tip.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 12 sts.
  4. R4: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 15 sts.
  5. R5-R6: sc around. 15 sts.
  6. R7: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.
  7. R8: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 9 sts.

Do not stuff. Flatten each ear. FO with a long tail. Sew one ear to each side of the upper head, angled outward and slightly upward like the photo. Add a few stitches at the base to cup the ear gently.

Ossicones

Make two. Each ossicone has a yellow stem and brown rounded top. Start with brown yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3-R4: sc around. 12 sts.
  4. R5: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 9 sts.

Change to golden yellow yarn.

  1. R6-R11: sc around. 9 sts.

Stuff the brown tip firmly and the yellow stem lightly. FO with a long tail. Sew the ossicones upright on top of the head, between the ears. Place them close together, with the brown tops visible above the eyes.

Small Daisy on the Head

The photo shows a white daisy beside one ossicone. Use yellow for the center and white for the petals.

Daisy Center

  1. R1: With yellow, 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO.

Daisy Petals

Join white yarn into any stitch of the yellow center.

  1. Petal round: ch 4, starting in second ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, sl st into next center stitch. Repeat 6 times total.

FO and weave in the back ends. Sew the daisy near the right ossicone, slightly overlapping the head and horn, just like a little garden hair clip.

Neck

Use golden yellow yarn. The neck is long and narrow. Stuff firmly as you go so it can support the large head.

  1. R1: 8 sc in MR. 8 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 16 sts.
  4. R4-R22: sc around. 16 sts.
  5. R23: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 20 sts.
  6. R24-R26: sc around. 20 sts.

FO with a long tail. Add extra stuffing at the top and bottom. Sew the narrow top into the bottom opening of the head. The head should tilt slightly forward so the wide smile faces the viewer.

Brown Neck Spots

Make five or six small spots using brown yarn. These spots are placed randomly on the giraffe neck and upper body.

  1. Small spot: 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO with tail.
  2. Medium spot: 6 sc in MR, inc around to 12 sts, sl st to close. FO with tail.

Sew two medium spots on the front and side of the neck, one small spot near the shoulder, and one or two spots partly hidden by the jacket. Keep the arrangement uneven and natural.

Body

The body is mostly hidden by the striped skirt and blue jacket. Use golden yellow yarn for the upper torso because the neck and arms match the giraffe body.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.
  6. R6: sc 4, inc, repeat around. 36 sts.
  7. R7-R13: sc around. 36 sts.
  8. R14: sc 4, dec, repeat around. 30 sts.
  9. R15-R18: sc around. 30 sts.
  10. R19: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  11. R20-R21: sc around. 24 sts.

Stuff firmly. Sew the neck to the top center of the body. The body should sit upright under the jacket, with the skirt attached around the lower half.

Arms

Make two. Start with dark brown for the hands, then change to golden yellow for the arms. The photo shows long thin yellow arms with brown rounded hands peeking out from the blue jacket sleeves.

  1. R1: With dark brown, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3-R5: sc around. 12 sts.
  4. R6: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 9 sts.
  5. R7: Change to golden yellow, sc around. 9 sts.
  6. R8-R20: sc around. 9 sts.

Stuff the hand firmly and the arm lightly. Flatten the top. FO with a long tail. Sew the arms to the upper body at shoulder height, angled downward so they rest naturally along the sides of the jacket.

Legs

Make two long legs with golden yellow yarn. These legs hang straight down from the seated body and are visible below the striped skirt.

  1. R1: 7 sc in MR. 7 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 14 sts.
  3. R3-R5: sc around. 14 sts.
  4. R6: sc 5, dec, sc 5, dec. 12 sts.
  5. R7-R27: sc around. 12 sts.

Stuff the foot and lower leg firmly, then stuff the upper leg more lightly so it can bend at the table edge. FO with a long tail. Sew both legs to the lower front of the body, leaving a small gap between them. The legs should dangle below the skirt.

Striped Skirt

The skirt in the image is yellow and brown striped, slightly flared, and sits below the blue jacket. It looks like a garden dress or skirt with rounded crochet rows. Work from the waist downward.

Use mustard yellow and brown yarn. Join each round with a sl st and ch 1 at the beginning of the next round. Do not turn unless stated.

  1. R1: With mustard yellow, ch 36, join to form a ring. Sc around. 36 sts.
  2. R2: sc 5, inc, repeat around. 42 sts.
  3. R3: Change to brown, sc around. 42 sts.
  4. R4: Change to mustard yellow, sc 6, inc, repeat around. 48 sts.
  5. R5: Mustard yellow, sc around. 48 sts.
  6. R6: Change to brown, sc around. 48 sts.
  7. R7: Change to mustard yellow, sc 7, inc, repeat around. 54 sts.
  8. R8: Mustard yellow, sc around. 54 sts.
  9. R9: Change to brown, sc around. 54 sts.
  10. R10: Change to mustard yellow, sc around. 54 sts.
  11. R11: Change to brown, sc around. 54 sts.
  12. R12: With brown, work sl st loosely around for a neat lower edge.

Slide the skirt over the body from the legs upward before the head makes it difficult, or open the back seam if needed. Sew the top edge of the skirt around the lower body. The flared edge should rest above the legs.

Blue Garden Jacket

The jacket is one of the main features. It is denim blue with long sleeves, a folded collar, small pockets, brown buttons, and colorful flower embroidery. The jacket is made as a flat cardigan and sewn around the body.

Jacket Body

Use denim blue yarn. Work in rows.

  1. R1: ch 37. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 36. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2: sc 6 for right front, ch 6 and skip 6 for armhole, sc 12 for back, ch 6 and skip 6 for armhole, sc 6 for left front. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R3: sc 6, sc 6 into armhole chain, sc 12, sc 6 into armhole chain, sc 6. 36 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  4. R4-R9: sc across. Ch 1, turn.
  5. R10: sc 4, hdc 2, sc 24, hdc 2, sc 4. Ch 1, turn.
  6. R11: sc across. FO.

Wrap the jacket around the torso over the skirt. The two front panels should remain open enough to show a little of the yellow neck and striped skirt. Sew the shoulder and side areas in place with hidden stitches.

Jacket Sleeves

Make two. Join denim blue yarn around one armhole and work in continuous rounds.

  1. R1: sc 18 evenly around the armhole. 18 sts.
  2. R2-R4: sc around. 18 sts.
  3. R5: sc 4, dec, repeat around. 15 sts.
  4. R6-R11: sc around. 15 sts.
  5. R12: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.
  6. R13: sc around. 12 sts.

FO and weave in ends. The sleeve should stop just above the brown hand so the hand remains visible.

Jacket Collar

Attach denim blue yarn at the top front corner of the jacket.

  1. R1: sc evenly around the front opening and back neckline, placing about 30 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2: sc 6, hdc 4, dc 10, hdc 4, sc 6. FO.

Fold the collar outward. Tack it down with two tiny stitches near the shoulders so it looks like the open garden jacket in the photo.

Jacket Pockets

Make two tiny pockets with denim blue yarn.

  1. R1: ch 6, sc 5. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2-R4: sc 5. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R5: sl st across the top edge. FO with tail.

Sew one pocket to each front panel. Add a light blue surface stitch along the top of each pocket. Sew two small brown buttons vertically down the front center.

Flower Embroidery on Jacket

Use small lengths of red, yellow, white, purple, pink, green, and light blue yarn. The photo shows little flower appliques and embroidered stems on the blue jacket.

  • On the lower left jacket front, embroider a small red flower with a yellow center and green stem.
  • On the lower right jacket front, embroider a white daisy, a purple flower, and a small pink flower.
  • Add two green stem lines and tiny leaf stitches around the flowers.
  • Keep the decorations small so the jacket still looks like a neat handmade miniature garment.

Sandals

Make two sandals using tan, beige, and brown yarn. The sandals have a rounded sole, a strap across the toes, and a red ladybug decoration on each foot.

Soles

Use tan yarn.

  1. R1: ch 8. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side, sc 5, inc. 16 sts.
  2. R2: inc, sc 5, inc 3 times, sc 5, inc 2 times. 22 sts.

  4. R4: sc around. FO.

Toe Strap

Use beige yarn.

  1. R1: ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and across. 8 sts. FO with long tails.

Sew the strap across the front of the sandal. Place the yellow foot into the sandal and sew the sole invisibly to the bottom of the leg. The strap should sit over the toes.

Brown Trim

Use brown yarn and surface sl st around the side of each sole. This creates the striped look seen in the photo. Add one short beige line on the strap for extra texture.

Ladybugs for Shoes

Make two small ladybugs with red yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO with tail.

Use black thread to embroider a center line, a small head, and two tiny dots on each red circle. Sew one ladybug to the front of each sandal strap.

  7. R7: Change to brown, sc 12. Ch 1, turn.
  8. R8-R10: Change to beige, sc 12. Ch 1, turn.

Make a second panel the same way. Hold panels together and sc around three sides with beige yarn. Lightly stuff or leave flat. Sc across the top edge to close.

Bag Flap

  1. R1: With beige, ch 13, sc 12. Ch 1, turn.
  2. R2-R4: sc 12. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R5: sc 2, hdc 8, sc 2. FO.

Sew the flap to the back top edge and fold it over the front. Add a red ladybug applique to the lower front of the bag using the same instructions as the shoe ladybugs, but make this one with 8 sc in the magic ring for a larger size.

Bag Strap

Use beige yarn.

  1. R1: ch 70, sl st in second ch from hook and across. FO.

Sew each end of the strap to the top sides of the bag. Place the strap over one shoulder and across the body before sewing the bag lightly to the skirt or jacket. This keeps it from sliding.

Sunflower in a Pot

The photo includes a tiny brown flower pot with a crochet sunflower standing beside the giraffe. Make the pot, stem, leaves, and sunflower separately.

Flower Pot

Use terracotta brown yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

  5. R16: sl st loosely around. FO.

Shape the crown with your fingers. The brim should curve gently upward at the edge.

Blue Hat Band

Use light blue yarn.

  1. R1: ch 36, sl st in second ch from hook and across. FO.

Wrap around the base of the crown and sew in place.

Blue Flower for Hat

Use yellow for the center and blue for petals.

  1. Center: With yellow, 6 sc in MR, sl st to close. FO.
  2. Petals: Join blue, ch 3, sc in second ch, hdc in next ch, sl st into next center stitch. Repeat 6 times. FO.

Sew the flower to the front side of the hat band.

Yellow Head Cap Texture

The top of the giraffe head has a smooth yellow cap-like area with strong horizontal stitch lines. You can create this effect with surface crochet after the head is finished.

  • Use mustard yellow yarn and insert the hook around the upper head, above the eyes and pink gum band.
  • Work surface slip stitches in curved horizontal lines from one side of the head to the other.
  • Make 6 to 8 rows, spacing them evenly.
  • Keep the lines parallel so the cap area looks structured and handmade.

This detail helps the head match the photo, where the upper head looks like a rounded yellow crochet cap sitting over the smiling face.

Facial Placement Guide

  • Place the white muzzle on the lower front of the head before sewing the eyes.
  • The pink gum band should overlap the top of the muzzle by about one row.
  • The eyes sit high and close together, touching or nearly touching.
  • The ears sit outside the ossicones and angle outward.
  • The daisy sits near one horn, slightly forward, so it is visible from the front.
  • The black mouth embroidery must be added last so the grin stays centered.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the neck securely to the head, then sew the neck to the body. Add extra stitches around the base so the head does not wobble.
  2. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body so they hang straight down when the doll is seated.
  3. Sew the arms to the shoulders and place the blue jacket over them. Attach the jacket body first, then make or adjust the sleeves.
  4. Sew the striped skirt around the lower body and let the hem flare slightly over the tops of the legs.
  5. Add sandals to the feet, then sew ladybugs to the sandal straps.
  6. Place the crossbody bag strap over the shoulder and sew the bag lightly against the skirt.
  7. Add the brown neck spots after the clothing is positioned, so some spots can appear partly hidden.
  8. Complete the smile embroidery, tooth lines, eye highlights, and small face adjustments.

Take time with the face. The cheerful oversized grin is the heart of this design. Use pins to test the muzzle, eyes, ears, horns, and daisy before sewing. Small placement changes can make the giraffe look sleepy, surprised, or extra happy.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak if you used safety eyes, buttons, wire, or wooden decorations.
  • Gently press with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Keep away from high heat, direct sun, and rough pulling.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The white muzzle is large, rounded, and centered on the lower face.
  • The pink gum band sits above the teeth and creates the same playful smile shape.
  • The blue eyes are raised, bright, and placed close together.
  • The brown ossicones stand upright between the ears.
  • The yellow neck is long and decorated with brown spots.
  • The blue jacket has sleeves, collar, pockets, buttons, and tiny flower details.
  • The striped skirt is yellow and brown with a soft flare.
  • The legs hang straight and the sandals include red ladybug appliques.
  • The bag, sunflower pot, watering can, and straw hat are included as separate accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For display pieces, dust the doll gently with a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush. Work around the eyes, daisy, jacket embroidery, and ladybugs carefully. These small raised details can catch fibers if rubbed too hard.

If the doll becomes lightly stained, use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap. Dab the area instead of scrubbing. Rinse by dabbing again with plain water, then press dry with a towel.

Store the giraffe upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Do not compress the face, horns, ears, or hat under heavy objects. To preserve the seated shape, place tissue paper under the legs and around the accessories when storing.

If the doll is made as a decorative item, keep the watering can, sunflower pot, hat, and bag removable or lightly sewn. If the doll is made for gentle play, sew every accessory firmly and avoid wire, buttons, and loose safety eyes for young children.

Finishing Note

Your smiling giraffe sunflower garden doll is complete when the whole scene feels cheerful, bright, and full of small handmade garden details. The large grin, denim-style jacket, striped skirt, ladybug sandals, crossbody bag, sunflower pot, watering can, and straw hat all work together to create the same playful garden look shown in the reference image.
