This seaside studio suitcase crochet pattern recreates a cozy portable room with a cream textured case, brown travel trim, a fox explorer in a blue sweater and white scarf, a writing desk with map and compass, a chair, a lighthouse window scene, bunting, bookshelf, binoculars, boat, shells, lantern, rug, and tiny treasure chest.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Free Crochet Pattern Overview
This project is made as a structured crochet suitcase diorama. The lower half forms the studio floor, and the upright back panel forms the wall. Small amigurumi pieces are sewn or lightly glued into place after blocking. The finished look should feel like a handmade seaside explorer room tucked inside a vintage travel case.
The pattern uses firm amigurumi tension, mostly single crochet, and many small appliques. Work tightly so the walls, desk, chair, and accessories keep their shape. A small amount of cardboard or plastic canvas is recommended inside the suitcase panels and furniture for the crisp rectangular form shown in the image.
Finished Size
- Open suitcase: about 12 in wide, 9 in deep, and 10 in tall.
- Fox doll seated: about 6 in tall from seat to ear tip.
- Desk: about 4.25 in wide, 2.25 in deep, and 2.25 in tall.
- Chair: about 2.25 in wide and 3.75 in tall.
- Window: about 4.25 in tall and 3.25 in wide.
Skill Level
Intermediate amigurumi and miniature crochet. A confident beginner can also make this project by working slowly and finishing one section at a time. The tiny accessories are simple, but they require neat sewing and patient placement.
Materials
- Worsted weight cotton or cotton blend yarn in cream, beige, tan, camel brown, dark brown, rusty orange, white, navy blue, sky blue, red, black, gray, yellow, sand, blush pink, and muted teal.
- Sport weight yarn or embroidery thread for tiny details, books, ropes, compass markings, and map lines.
- 3.0 mm crochet hook for suitcase and furniture.
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for fox and small accessories.
- 2.0 mm crochet hook for miniature appliques and fine details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Plastic canvas or thin cardboard for suitcase panels, desk, chair, bookshelf, and chest.
- Two 6 mm black safety eyes for the fox, or black embroidery thread.
- Small black embroidery thread for fox nose, mouth, binocular cords, and compass needle.
- Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and optional fabric glue.
- Four small brown buttons or crocheted tabs for front latches and side hardware.
Gauge
With 3.0 mm hook and worsted yarn, 18 sc and 20 rows should measure about 4 in. Gauge is less important than firmness. The finished fabric should not show stuffing or panel inserts. Use a smaller hook if your stitches are loose.

Important Construction Notes
Work the suitcase as two shallow trays joined at the back. The bottom tray is the floor. The upright tray is the wall. Both trays have raised cream borders and rounded corners. The brown strip along the front bottom gives the suitcase the vintage luggage style seen in the image.
Most room details are worked separately and sewn on. This gives cleaner shapes and lets you arrange everything before final attachment. The window scene, bunting, compass, shelf, and hanging binoculars go on the upright back panel. The fox, desk, chair, rug, boat, lantern, shells, and chest sit inside the bottom panel.
Suitcase Bottom Floor Panel
Use cream yarn and 3.0 mm hook. Work in rows to make a firm rectangle. The floor should be slightly taller at the edges, like a shallow open suitcase base.

Cut a piece of plastic canvas slightly smaller than the floor. Place it behind the crochet rectangle. Make a second cream rectangle using R1 to R38 only. Hold both crochet pieces together with the insert between them and sc evenly around through both layers. This creates a thick, stable suitcase floor.
Suitcase Bottom Raised Walls
The front and side walls are crocheted separately, then sewn around three edges of the floor. The back edge stays connected to the upright wall later. The walls should be about 2 in high.
Front Wall
- R1: With cream, ch 49. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 48 sc.
- R2 to R11: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 48 sc.

- R2 to R11: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 33 sc.
- R12: Ch 1, BLO sc across. FO.
Sew the front wall to the front edge of the floor. Sew one side wall to each side edge. Keep the top BLO ridge facing outward. Add stuffing lightly inside each wall before the final seam if you want a softer padded suitcase look.
Upright Back Wall Panel
The back wall is the large cream panel behind the fox. It has rounded corners and a thick raised rim. Make it firm so it stands upright without collapsing.
- R1: With cream, ch 49. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 48 sc.
- R2 to R45: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. 48 sc.
- Border R1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, working 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to join.
- Border R2: Ch 1, sc around again. FO.
Make a second matching rectangle. Place plastic canvas between the two panels and sc around through both layers. Sew the lower edge of the back wall securely to the back edge of the bottom floor. Use a strong whipstitch and pass through the panel insert holes when possible.
Rounded Suitcase Outer Rim
The raised rim frames the entire open suitcase. It should look thick and padded, especially around the back wall. Use cream yarn and work a long cord-like strip.
- R1: Ch 8. Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 7 sc.
- R2 to R150: Ch 1, BLO sc across. Turn. 7 sc.

Wrap this ribbed strip around the outside edge of the upright wall and around the upper edges of the suitcase base. Sew it down with small stitches. At corners, curve the strip gently and sew extra stitches to make the rounded luggage shape.
Brown Front Luggage Trim and Handle
Use dark brown yarn for the leather-like trim at the front bottom. This trim sits along the outside lower front edge, with a curved handle and three latch details.

- R1: With black or dark brown, ch 5. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Turn. 4 sc.
- R2: Ch 1, sc across. FO.
Sew the tab to the top center outer rim of the upright wall. Keep it small so it looks like a suitcase clasp rather than a decoration.
Optional Interior Texture
The case in the image has a visible woven crochet texture. To imitate that texture, add horizontal surface slip stitches across the back wall and lower front wall every 3 rows. Use the same cream yarn and keep the stitches loose enough that the panels do not curl.
You may also embroider short vertical stitches on the outside rim. This gives the suitcase the soft, ribbed luggage texture visible along the front and side edges.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Pin every piece inside the suitcase before sewing. Begin with the wall pieces: window, bunting, compass, shelf, and hanging binoculars. Next attach the rug, desk, chair, and floor accessories. Add the fox last so the arms can rest naturally near the desk edge.
For the fox face, keep the expression simple and gentle. The eyes should be small and round. The nose should be an oval at the muzzle tip. Add one short black stitch downward from the nose and two tiny brown stitches near the cheeks if you want extra warmth.
Sew the fox head to the sweater body with a full circle of stitches. The neck should be firm enough that the head does not tilt backward. Wrap the scarf after the head is attached so it hides the neck seam neatly.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
- Do not machine wash because the suitcase contains structured inserts.
- Keep away from heavy moisture, direct heat, and strong sunlight.
- Use this piece as display decor, not as a toy for children under 3 years old.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The suitcase stands open without falling backward.
- The brown handle and latches are centered on the front.
- The lighthouse is visible through the arched window.
- The fox sits securely and faces the desk.
- The map, scroll, compass, and book are attached to the desk top.
- The shelf contains colorful books and binoculars.
- The rug, chair, boat, shells, lantern, and chest are all sewn down neatly.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the studio, dust it with a soft brush once a week. Work from the top bunting downward so dust does not settle on already cleaned areas. A clean makeup brush works well for the window, shelf, fox ears, and tiny shells.
For small stains, touch only the stained area with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the piece. Press gently with a clean towel and let it air dry fully before closing or storing.
Store the suitcase open on a shelf when possible. If you need to store it closed, place soft tissue around the fox, desk, chair, and shelf so the tiny pieces do not flatten. Avoid plastic bags for long storage because trapped moisture can affect yarn and cardboard inserts.
With careful finishing and light handling, your Lighthouse Fox Seaside Studio will stay crisp, charming, and ready for display as a cozy handmade coastal scene.
