Create a cozy crochet laundry-room suitcase scene with a sweet hedgehog helper, a pastel washing machine, tiled floor, cloud rug, clothesline, folded laundry basket, soap bottles, wall shelf, potted plant, glowing-style garland bulbs, and a “Laundry Day” sign. This pattern builds each miniature piece separately, then assembles everything inside a soft suitcase-shaped crochet display.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi diorama. The suitcase is worked as a shallow rectangular base with rounded corners and a raised back lid. The hedgehog is small, rounded, and front-facing, with a cream face, brown looped spines, tiny paws, and a blue laundry apron holding a striped sweater.
The finished scene is meant to look like a miniature laundry room tucked inside a crochet suitcase. Most parts are crocheted in continuous rounds or rows, then sewn into place. Use tight tension so the pieces keep their soft sculpted shape.
Finished Size
- Suitcase when open: about 9 in wide, 7 in tall, and 4 in deep.
- Hedgehog: about 3.25 in tall.
- Washing machine: about 2.75 in tall and 2.5 in wide.
- Mini accessories: about 0.5–2 in each.
Skill Level
Confident beginner to intermediate. The stitches are simple, but there are many small parts. Read each section before starting, use stitch markers, and pin all pieces before sewing them permanently.
Materials
- Sport weight or DK cotton yarn in cream, oatmeal, sage green, pale blue, medium blue, tan, brown, dark brown, white, soft yellow, dusty pink, mint, and rust.
- 2.25 mm crochet hook for amigurumi parts.
- 2.75 mm crochet hook for suitcase panels if you want a slightly softer fabric.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- 6 mm black safety eyes for hedgehog, or black embroidery thread.
- Small piece of clear plastic for the washing-machine window, optional.
- Thin cardboard or plastic canvas for suitcase support, washing machine, shelf, and table.
- Tapestry needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Embroidery thread in black, brown, white, and blue.
- Small wooden mini clothespins, or crochet clothespins using the instructions below.
- Optional warm yellow LED fairy lights. Use battery-operated lights only and never leave them unattended.
Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring.
- ch: chain.
- sl st: slip stitch.
- sc: single crochet.
- hdc: half double crochet.
- dc: double crochet.
- inc: 2 sc in the same stitch.
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease.
- BLO: back loop only.
- FLO: front loop only.
- st/sts: stitch/stitches.
- R: round.
- Row: worked flat in rows.
- FO: fasten off.
Gauge
Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. With a 2.25 mm hook and DK cotton, 8 sc by 8 rows should measure about 1 inch square. If stuffing shows through, go down a hook size.
Construction Notes
- Work amigurumi parts in continuous rounds unless told otherwise.
- Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round.
- Stuff firmly but not so tightly that the stitches stretch.
- For flat panels, ch 1 and turn at the end of each row unless stated.
- Leave long yarn tails on pieces that will be sewn down.
- The suitcase needs structure. Insert cardboard or plastic canvas between two crochet layers for the base and back panel.
- Use a neat whipstitch or mattress stitch when joining pieces.
Color Plan
- Suitcase outer base: sage green lower band and cream upper band.
- Suitcase inner walls: warm cream.
- Trim and handles: tan.
- Floor: checkerboard squares in cream, pale blue, and sage.
- Washing machine: pale blue with darker blue details.
- Hedgehog face and body: oatmeal cream.
- Hedgehog spines: dark brown and medium brown loop texture.
- Apron: pale blue.

Assembly Order
Assemble the large scene before adding tiny details. This prevents the small parts from getting pulled out of place while you sew the main pieces.
- Join the suitcase base and back wall securely.
- Sew the checkerboard floor overlay to the base.
- Sew the cloud rug to the front center floor.
- Place the washing machine on the right-middle floor and sew through the bottom panel into the suitcase floor.
- Place the hedgehog to the left of the washing machine and sew the feet and lower body to the floor.
- Sew the laundry basket to the right front corner.
- Sew the folding table to the left front corner.
- Attach the shelf, plant, sign, hanging towel, and peg bag to the back wall.
- Attach the clothesline across the upper wall, then add the hanging clothes and clothespins.
- Sew the garland cord around the inside edge and attach the yellow bulbs.
- Add bubbles and soap suds last.
Placement Guide
- Left front: folding table with laundry soap and washing powder.
- Left middle: hedgehog standing slightly in front of the wall sign.
- Center front: cloud rug on checkerboard floor.
- Right middle: pale blue washing machine.
- Right front: basket overflowing with folded laundry.
- Back upper left: shelf and potted plant.
- Back center: clothesline with garments.
- Back left center: “Laundry Day” sign and small hanging cloths.
- Edges: tan suitcase piping and warm yellow bulbs.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Shape the hedgehog face before the final stitches are hidden. Use a strand of cream yarn to pull gently from one eye to the other, creating a soft eye indentation. Do not pull too tightly; the face should stay round and gentle.
Embroider a tiny brown nose on the muzzle using horizontal satin stitches. Add one short vertical stitch beneath the nose and two very small curved mouth stitches. Add pale pink cheek stitches if desired, keeping them tiny so the face remains soft.
Brush the spine loops lightly with your fingers to fluff them. Do not comb too hard, because the loops should look like rounded crochet texture rather than loose yarn hair.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not soak the suitcase if cardboard is used inside.
- Let the piece air dry completely before storing.
- Keep away from pets and small children if beads, wires, or mini clothespins are used.
- If LED lights are added, remove batteries when the display is not in use.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The suitcase stands open without collapsing.
- The washing machine is square and firmly attached.
- The hedgehog is balanced and sewn to the floor.
- The clothesline has a gentle curve and is not too loose.
- The laundry basket looks full, with a few clothes visible over the rim.
- The yellow bulbs are evenly spaced around the suitcase edge.
- The “Laundry Day” sign is readable and centered under the shelf.
- All yarn tails are woven in or hidden inside pieces.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Use a soft dry brush to remove dust from the suitcase corners, hedgehog spines, and laundry basket. For small marks, dampen a clean cloth with cool water and gently press the area. Avoid rubbing embroidered lettering and tiny accessories.
Store the finished piece in a box with tissue paper around the wall and handles. Keep it away from strong sunlight so the pale blue washer, sage suitcase, and soft yellow bulbs do not fade. Check sewn attachments occasionally and reinforce any loose pieces with matching yarn.
