Crochet Tutorial: Turtle Slow Morning Patio Kitchen – Free Crochet Pattern.

This detailed crochet pattern creates a cozy open-room miniature scene with a sweet turtle cooking breakfast in a tiny patio kitchen. The design includes a cream kitchen wall, arched windows with curtains, mint cabinets, eggs, bread, fruit, milk, honey, a recipe chalkboard, a turtle amigurumi with a brown shell and apron, a stove with pancakes, and a vine-covered patio with grill, table, chair, herbs, and a basket of red produce.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished display measures about 12 in wide, 7 in deep, and 8 in tall when made with DK cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. The turtle stands about 4.5 in tall. The left kitchen room is about 6 in wide, and the right patio area is about 6 in wide.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate miniature crochet pattern. A confident beginner can complete it by working slowly and checking stitch counts often. Most pieces use single crochet, increases, decreases, flat panels, simple shaping, and small sewn details.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: DK or light worsted cotton yarn.
  • Hook: 2.5 mm for main pieces, 2.0 mm for small food and vines.
  • Fiberfill: For turtle body, head, shell, arms, feet, and padded furniture.
  • Plastic canvas or firm cardboard: For floor, walls, counter, cabinets, stove, patio roof, and table support.
  • Safety eyes: 6 mm black eyes, or black embroidery thread.
  • Tapestry needle: For sewing and embroidery.
  • Stitch markers: For spiral rounds.
  • Hot glue or strong craft glue: Optional, for securing rigid panels.
  • Thin wire: Optional, for curtain rods, vines, and grill legs.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. With 2.5 mm hook and DK cotton yarn, 8 sc rounds should measure about 1 in. If your fabric shows stuffing, use a smaller hook. If your panels curl too much, loosen your tension slightly.

Important Construction Notes

This miniature is built as a two-part open scene. The left side is a cream indoor kitchen with two arched windows and a mint cabinet counter. The right side is an outdoor patio with a gray floor, pergola posts, a pale roof frame, and dark green trailing vines.

Work the base panels first, then make the turtle, furniture, food, and accessories. Sew or glue the small pieces after all parts are finished. For the cleanest display, block the wall, floor, and roof panels before assembly.

Cut plastic canvas to fit behind the panel. Whipstitch the crochet floor around the canvas so the piece lies flat and firm.

Use soft gray yarn. Ch 41.

  1. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 40 sc.

To imitate the small tiled look in the picture, embroider vertical lines every 5 stitches and horizontal lines every 5 rows using slightly darker gray yarn. Keep the lines light and shallow so the floor remains neat.

Joining the Two Floors

Place the tan kitchen floor and gray patio floor side by side. With cream yarn, whipstitch through the inner border loops for 30 stitches. This creates one wide display base with a visible but tidy center seam.

  2. Rows 2-34: Ch 1, turn, sc across. 44 sc.

Turtle Placement

Place the turtle slightly left of center, facing the stove. The shell should be visible from the side and back, while the face points toward the pancakes. Sew the feet to the floor with hidden stitches. Tack one hand to the pan handle and the other hand near the apron front.

For the most accurate scene, keep the turtle shorter than the back window and taller than the stove. The head should sit just above the top of the stove, creating the look of a small turtle calmly making breakfast in the tiny kitchen.

Small Detail Placement Guide

  • Honey jar: Place on the left front side of the mint counter.
  • Egg tray: Place near the center of the counter.
  • Bread loaf and slices: Place near the egg tray and rolling pin.
  • Fruit basket: Place toward the back counter near the recipe board.
  • Milk bottle: Place on the back counter near the sink.
  • Recipe chalkboard: Sew to the left wall above the counter.
  • Sink and faucet: Place directly under the large back window.
  • Herb pot: Place at the front patio edge near the kitchen opening.
  • Table with flower pot: Place under the pergola, slightly to the right.
  • Grill: Place behind the table, close to the right back post.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that all panels stand straight before securing the final decorations. Add extra stitches at the back wall corners, floor seam, and pergola posts if anything feels loose. Miniature scenes look best when the base is firm and the small pieces are attached neatly.

For the turtle’s face, embroider a small curved smile with dark green thread. Add two tiny cheek stitches in a softer green if desired. Keep the eyes simple and low on the head so the turtle looks gentle, focused, and peaceful while cooking.

Sew the apron ties around the turtle’s back, crossing them over the shell edge if needed. Do not pull too tightly. The apron should lie flat on the front of the body and remain visible beneath the turtle’s arms.

Care Notes

This crochet scene is decorative and should not be machine washed. Dust it gently with a soft brush. If a small area becomes dirty, spot clean with cool water and mild soap. Press with a towel and let the piece air dry fully.

Keep the miniature away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heavy handling. The tiny food pieces, vines, and furniture are delicate. If the item is displayed near children, make sure all small parts are securely sewn down.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The kitchen wall and side wall stand upright.
  • The arched windows have curtains and center bars.
  • The mint cabinet has doors, knobs, countertop, sink, and faucet.
  • The counter includes honey, eggs, bread, fruit, milk, towel, and rolling pin.
  • The turtle has head, body, arms, feet, shell, apron, eyes, and smile.
  • The stove has a black pan and stacked pancakes.
  • The patio has four posts, roof slats, and trailing vines.
  • The grill, table, chair, herb pot, flower pot, and red produce basket are attached.
  • All small pieces are sewn firmly and the display sits flat.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the piece upright in a covered display box or on a clean shelf. Avoid stacking items on top of the pergola roof because the vines and posts may bend over time.

For long-term storage, wrap the scene loosely in acid-free tissue paper. Do not compress the turtle, table, grill, or wall panels. Add a small silica gel packet nearby if your room is humid, but keep it away from children and pets.

If the vines flatten, reshape them gently with your fingers. If a panel begins to lean, add a few hidden stitches through the floor and the nearest support post or wall edge. Small maintenance stitches will keep the patio kitchen looking fresh and display-ready.
