The scene includes a torch-carrying brown innkeeper, a beige bunny with a basket, and a tiny hanging bat near the front gate.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi and mini diorama crochet. This pattern uses basic amigurumi shaping, front-loop texture, surface crochet, small sewn pieces, and simple embroidery. A confident beginner can follow it slowly, but many pieces are small, so stitch markers and neat tension are important.

  • Full diorama: about 13 in wide by 12 in deep by 10 in tall.
  • Pumpkin inn: about 7.5 in wide by 7 in tall before stem.
  • Base mat: about 12.5 in square with rounded corners.
  • Main figures: about 2.5 to 3.5 in tall.
  • Lantern posts: about 3.5 to 4 in tall.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in pumpkin orange, golden orange, moss green, dark green, brown, dark brown, beige, cream, yellow, gray, purple, white, black, and blue.

Gauge and Texture Notes

Use firm tension so the pumpkin stands upright and the tiny accessories keep their shape. The pumpkin body should feel dense but still soft enough to shape into vertical ribs. If stuffing shows through, switch to a smaller hook.

The image has a handmade amigurumi texture with visible tight single crochet rounds. Keep all body pieces worked in continuous spiral rounds unless a row instruction says otherwise. Mark the first stitch of every round.

Main Color Plan

  • Pumpkin: golden orange body with darker orange shaded lower area.
  • Stem and leaves: moss green and olive green.
  • Door, balcony, fence, lamp posts: warm brown and dark brown.
  • Window glow and lanterns: soft yellow with brown or moss-green frames.
  • Ground: medium garden green with dark green grass tufts.
  • Mushrooms: purple caps with white dots and beige stems.
  • Characters: brown innkeeper with blue vest, beige bunny with green vest, tiny dark bat.

Base Mat with Rounded Corners

The base is a soft square garden mat with rounded corners, like the image. It should be firm enough to hold the pumpkin, animals, flowers, mushrooms, lanterns, and path. Work with medium green yarn and the 3.25 mm hook.

Pumpkin Rib Lines

The pumpkin has six deep vertical ridges. The easiest way to match the image is to add raised surface lines and also pull the body inward with yarn tension. Use golden yellow or lighter orange for the raised ribs.

  1. Thread a long strand of golden yellow yarn onto a yarn needle.
  2. Insert the needle at the bottom center of the pumpkin and bring it out at the top center.
  3. Wrap the yarn down the outside of the pumpkin in a straight vertical line.
  4. Insert at the bottom center again and pull gently until the pumpkin indents.
  5. Repeat this process 6 times, spacing each rib evenly.
  6. After all shaping strands are placed, surface crochet 1 sl st line along each rib from bottom to top.
  7. For each surface line, insert the hook under one stitch bar, pull up yarn, sl st, then continue upward.

Do not pull the surface crochet too tightly. The ribs in the image are rounded, not sharply pinched. Shape the pumpkin with your hands after each rib so the house remains wide and cozy.

Curled Pumpkin Stem

The stem is thick at the base, tall, and curls forward like a hook. Use moss green. Optional craft wire helps hold the curved shape. If making this for a child, omit wire and stuff firmly instead.

  1. R1: With moss green, 6 sc in MR. You have 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. You have 12 sts.
  3. R3: BLO sc around. You have 12 sts.
  4. R4: Repeat sc 3, inc around. You have 15 sts.
  5. R5 to R12: Sc around. Stuff firmly as you go.
  6. R13: Sc 5, dec, sc 6, dec. You have 13 sts.
  7. R14 to R19: Sc around. Start bending the stem slightly forward.
  8. R20: Sc 4, dec, sc 5, dec. You have 11 sts.
  9. R21 to R27: Sc around. Add less stuffing near the top so it bends easily.
  10. R28: Sc 3, dec, sc 4, dec. You have 9 sts.
  11. R29 to R34: Sc around. Curve the tip downward.
  12. R35: Sc 2, dec, sc 3, dec. You have 7 sts.
  13. R36 to R39: Sc around.
  14. R40: Dec, sc 3, dec. You have 5 sts. FO, close the tip.

Shape the stem into a tall curl. Sew the wide stem base firmly to the top center of the pumpkin. Stitch around the base twice so it stands upright and does not lean backward.

Arrange large leaves first, pointing outward over the top of the pumpkin. Add small curled leaves between them. Sew only the center line of each leaf, leaving the edges slightly lifted like the ruffled leaf collar in the image.

Arched Front Door

The door is dark brown with a rounded top, lighter brown wood lines, a tiny yellow window, hinge straps, and a beige handle. It sits on the lower front center of the pumpkin.

Door Panel

  1. With dark brown, ch 10.

  • Use tan yarn to stitch two short horizontal hinge straps on the left side.
  • Use rust-brown thread to embroider 3 vertical wood grain lines.

Sew the door to the front of the pumpkin between two rib lines. The bottom of the door should touch the grass base after the pumpkin is attached.

Oval Glowing Windows

The pumpkin has two glowing oval windows, one on each side of the door. Each window has a yellow center, olive frame, and crossbar details. Make two matching windows.

Yellow Oval, Make 2

  1. With yellow, ch 7.
  2. R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch, rotate, sc 4, inc in last ch. You have 14 sts.

  • Do not cover too much yellow, because the windows should look bright and lantern-like.

Sew one window to the left of the door and one to the right. Angle them slightly so they follow the curve of the pumpkin body.

Firefly Inn Sign

The sign is a small rustic board above the door. It reads “Firefly Inn” in black thread. The sign in the image looks like pale wood with uneven brown edges.

Sign Board

  1. With light beige, ch 13.

Lettering

  • With black embroidery thread, stitch “Firefly” on the top line.
  • Stitch “Inn” centered below it.
  • Use tiny straight stitches. Keep the letters loose enough that the sign stays flat.
  • Add 2 short brown stitches on each side for rustic nail marks.

Sew the sign above the arched door, centered between the two front pumpkin ribs. If the sign curves too much, place a small piece of felt or cardboard behind it before sewing.

Right Side Balcony

A small brown balcony sticks out from the right side of the pumpkin. It has a rounded platform and rail posts. It should look decorative, like a tiny inn lookout.

Balcony Base

  1. With warm brown, ch 9.
  2. R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 8. Ch 1, turn.
  3. R2 to R4: Sc 8. Ch 1, turn.

Sew the balcony to the right side of the pumpkin, slightly above door height. Use several stitches through the back edge of the balcony so it points outward.

Stepping-Stone Path

The path begins at the front door and curves toward the lower front edge of the base. Use gray, cream, and pale yellow to make round stones with golden outlines.

Attaching the Pumpkin to the Base

Before sewing, test the pumpkin position. It should sit slightly toward the back center of the base, leaving room for the stepping stones, fence, bat, mushrooms, and characters at the front.

  1. Pin the pumpkin in place on the green base.
  2. Make sure the door faces the front path.
  3. Thread a long strand of orange yarn.
  4. Sew around the bottom of the pumpkin, catching both the pumpkin stitches and the base stitches.
  5. Sew a second round for strength.
  6. Add a few hidden stitches through the back of the pumpkin if it leans forward.

Scene Layout Guide

  • Place the door at the front center of the pumpkin.
  • Place the sign above the door.
  • Place windows on both front sides, angled with the pumpkin curve.
  • Place the balcony on the right side.
  • Place the tall lantern post to the left of the pumpkin.
  • Place another lantern post on the right side near the flowers.
  • Place the stepping stones from the door to the lower front edge.
  • Place mushrooms near the left front and beside the door.
  • Place the fence near the front path.
  • Place the innkeeper left of the path and the bunny right of the path.
  • Hang the tiny bat near the front lantern or gate.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sew the heads to the bodies of the innkeeper and bunny before attaching arms. Keep the faces turned slightly toward the pumpkin door so the scene feels alive. Embroider small smiles with black thread and add tiny pink or brown nose stitches.

Attach the animals to the base with strong hidden stitches through the feet. The innkeeper should stand on the left holding the torch forward. The bunny should stand on the right with the basket angled outward.

Add final small details after everything is attached. Stitch white dots on mushrooms, wood grain on the door, short green stitches around grass tufts, and tiny yellow highlights on lanterns. These details help the finished piece look close to the photographed diorama.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash because the pumpkin, posts, sign, and balcony may lose shape.
  • Keep the diorama away from heavy moisture and direct sunlight.
  • If the stem bends over time, gently reshape it with your hands.
  • If made with wire, keep it as a display piece and not a toy for small children.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The pumpkin body is firmly stuffed and has 6 clear rib lines.
  • The curled stem is centered and secure.
  • The leafy collar overlaps around the stem.
  • The door, sign, windows, key, and balcony are sewn firmly.
  • The path curves from the door to the front gate.
  • Lantern posts stand upright and lanterns hang clearly.
  • Flowers, mushrooms, grass tufts, and fence fill the garden base.
  • The innkeeper, bunny, and tiny bat are positioned like a cozy inn scene.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the Pumpkin Lantern Firefly Inn with a soft brush once in a while. Work gently around the sign, balcony rails, lantern hooks, and animal faces because these small parts can pull out of shape if rubbed too hard.

If a section becomes flattened, lightly reshape it with your fingers and let it rest in a dry place. Avoid soaking the piece. For storage, place tissue paper around the lantern posts and stem, then store the diorama in a box tall enough that nothing presses on the curled stem.

For long-term display, keep the crochet inn on a flat shelf. The base should be fully supported so the pumpkin remains upright. This helps the ribbed pumpkin, tiny garden, and woodland guests stay neat and charming for many seasons.
