Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. Most pieces use basic amigurumi shaping, tight single crochet stitches, simple color changes, and small sewn details. Read each section before starting so the eye stalks, overalls, mouth, and accessories line up neatly.

  • Main techniques: magic ring, single crochet, increases, invisible decreases, half double crochet, double crochet, slip stitch, chain, working in front loops and back loops.
  • Construction style: separate pieces sewn together, with the head and body made as one rounded green shape.
  • Finished size: about 11 inches tall from sandal sole to top of eye, using the suggested yarn and hook.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn in bright green for monster body.
  • Worsted weight yarn in medium denim blue for overalls.
  • Small amounts of white, black, purple, red, yellow, brown, tan, light blue, beige, orange-brown, and dark green yarn.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the doll and firm accessories.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for tiny flowers, bee details, and straps.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes or black yarn for the center of each eye.
  • Two small tan buttons for overall straps.
  • Two tiny tan buttons for sandals, optional.
  • Black embroidery thread for mouth outline and bee stripes.
  • Pink or red yarn for tongue and lower gum.
  • Fabric glue, optional, for securing very small flower centers.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st/sts: stitch/stitches
  • R: round

Gauge and Tension

For amigurumi, exact gauge is less important than firm fabric. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show. As a guide, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 inch with the 3.0 mm hook. Use a smaller hook if gaps appear.

The monster in the photo has a dense, smooth texture with visible but compact stitches. Stuff the head and body firmly, but do not overstuff the mouth area. The face should stay rounded and slightly oval, not stretched flat.

Important Pattern Notes

  • Work most pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless the instructions say to join.
  • Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff pieces gradually as you crochet.
  • For the cleanest shape, use invisible decreases on the body, head, arms, legs, eyes, and toes.
  • Sew pieces with matching yarn and small stitches. Pull firmly enough to hold the shape, but not so tightly that the fabric puckers.
  • The doll is designed with a large head-body shape, long eye stalks, slim arms, short legs, three rounded toes on each foot, blue overalls, and a small yellow bee bag worn diagonally.

Finished Proportions

The doll’s head and torso are one large rounded green form. The upper head is wide and dome-like, while the body narrows slightly under the overalls. The eye stalks rise from the top of the head at a gentle outward angle. The arms are slim and relaxed, reaching near the top of the shorts.

The feet are wide and playful with three green toes on each sandal. The overalls cover the lower half of the body, with short legs, a square bib, two straps, round buttons, and tiny flower embroidery on the front. The bee bag sits across the chest and rests near the right hip.

Main Green Head and Body

Use bright green yarn and the 3.0 mm hook. The head and body are crocheted as one rounded piece from the top down. Keep the upper section full and smooth because it will hold the eyes, sunflower, mouth, and overall straps.

Stuff the head and body firmly. Shape the head into a rounded dome with your hands. The lower body should be slightly narrower because the blue overalls will add thickness. Add more stuffing to the top and sides, then close the final opening.

  1. R47: Dec around. 6 sts.
  2. FO, leaving a long tail. Weave through the front loops of the last 6 sts, pull closed, and hide the tail inside the body.

Large Open Smile

The monster has a very wide black smiling mouth with white upper teeth, white lower teeth, and a red tongue or gum area at the bottom. This section is made as flat appliques and sewn onto the face. Place the mouth across the lower front of the head, centered between rounds 20 and 31.

Black Mouth Base

Use black yarn and the 3.0 mm hook. Work in rows. Chain 19.

  1. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. 18 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  2. Row 2: Inc, sc 16, inc. 20 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  3. Row 3: Inc, sc 18, inc. 22 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  4. Row 4: Sc across. 22 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  5. Row 5: Dec, sc 18, dec. 20 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  6. Row 6: Dec, sc 16, dec. 18 sts.

Do not fasten off yet. Sc evenly around the entire mouth base, placing 2 sc in each lower corner to keep the rounded shape. FO, leaving a long sewing tail. Pin the mouth to the face before sewing so the top edge curves upward slightly at both ends.

White Upper Teeth Strip

Use white yarn and the 2.5 mm hook. Chain 18.

  1. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and across. 17 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  2. Row 2: Sc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, hdc 1, sc 3. FO with a sewing tail.

Sew this strip along the upper inside edge of the black mouth. The uneven hdc bumps create the rounded tooth shapes seen in the picture. Use black thread to stitch short vertical lines between teeth. Keep the strip slightly curved, not perfectly straight.

Lower Teeth

Use white yarn and the 2.5 mm hook. Make 5 small teeth.

  1. For each tooth, make 5 sc in MR.
  2. Sl st to first sc and FO with a small tail.
  3. Sew the five tiny circles along the lower inside mouth, leaving space in the center for the red tongue.

Red Tongue

Use red yarn and the 2.5 mm hook. Chain 8.

  1. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, hdc 5, 3 hdc in last ch. Continue on the other side of the chain: hdc 5, sc 1. Sl st to first st.
  2. FO with a sewing tail.

Sew the tongue at the lower center of the black mouth, slightly overlapping the lower teeth. Add one short vertical stitch in red or dark pink at the center if you want a split tongue look. Sew the entire mouth securely onto the face.

Eye Stalks

The eye stalks are tall, slim, and slightly curved outward. Make two identical stalks in bright green. Stuff them lightly, not firmly, so they can bend gently without becoming lumpy. The finished stalks should be about 3 inches long before the eyeballs are attached.

  1. R1: With green, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3-R22: Sc around. 9 sts for 20 rounds.
  4. Stuff lightly as you go, using the back of a hook or stuffing stick.
  5. R23: Sc 1, dec; repeat around. 6 sts.
  6. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pin the stalks on top of the head between rounds 5 and 8. Place them about 10 stitches apart. Angle the left stalk slightly left and the right stalk slightly right. Sew around the base two full times so they stand upright.

Large Purple Eyes

Each eye is a layered circle with a green outer eyeball, white ring, purple iris, and black pupil. Make the pieces flat and sew them to the rounded green eye base. This creates the bold cartoon garden monster expression.

Green Eye Base

Make two with green yarn and the 3.0 mm hook.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5-R7: Sc around. 24 sts for 3 rounds.
  6. R8: Sc 2, dec; repeat around. 18 sts.
  7. Stuff lightly to form a rounded eye dome.
  8. R9: Sc 1, dec; repeat around. 12 sts.
  9. FO, leaving a long tail. Do not close completely until the eye disk is sewn on.

Arms

The arms are slim, green, and slightly tapered. Each arm has a small rounded hand with two soft finger bumps. Make two. Stuff the upper arm very lightly and leave the final rounds unstuffed so the arms hang naturally.

  9. R24: Flatten the opening and sc through both layers across. 5 sts.
  10. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew the arms to the sides of the green body around rounds 28 to 30. Angle them downward so they rest along the sides of the overalls. The left and right hands should curve slightly inward toward the body.

Legs

The legs are short and green, visible below the blue shorts. Make two identical legs. They should be sturdy enough to support the doll when placed sitting or leaning, but the sandals will create the wide flat base.

  1. R1: With green, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.

  7. Stuff firmly.
  8. R15: Flatten the top and sc through both layers across. 7 sc.
  9. FO with a long sewing tail.

Sew the legs under the body, about 5 stitches apart, so they sit below the shorts. The feet and sandals will be attached later. Make sure the toes point forward before sewing the feet.

Feet and Toes

Each foot has a flat green foot pad with three rounded toes. The toes sit on top of the brown sandal sole, just like the image. Make two feet and six toes.

Sew three toes to the front of each foot base. Place the center toe slightly forward and the side toes slightly angled outward. Sew the finished foot to the bottom of each leg after the sandal sole is ready.

Brown Sandals

The sandals are made with flat brown soles and narrow straps across the green toes. Use brown yarn for the sole and darker brown for the straps. Add tiny tan buttons on the outer sides if desired.

Sandal Sole

Make two with medium brown yarn and the 3.0 mm hook.

  3. For each ankle strap, chain 16.
  4. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 15 sc. FO with long tails.

Place one green foot on each sandal sole. Sew the sole to the bottom of the foot. Sew the front strap across the toes and the ankle strap over the top of the foot. Add a tiny tan button on the outside edge of each sandal strap.

Blue Short Overalls

The overalls are crocheted separately and fitted over the doll’s lower body. They have two short legs, a high waist, a front bib, two straps, button details, and flower embroidery. Use medium denim blue yarn and the 3.0 mm hook.

Overall Shorts Leg One

  1. R1: Ch 24, sl st to first ch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist. 24 sts.

  7. R15: Sc around. 36 sts.
  8. FO and weave in the end.

Slide the shorts onto the doll from the feet upward before the sandals are permanently attached if needed. Position the waistband around the lower green body. Sew the waistband lightly to the body at the back and sides so it does not slip.

Front Bib

Use denim blue yarn. Work in rows at the center front of the overalls.

  1. Join yarn to the front center waistband.
  2. Row 1: Sc 16 across the front. Ch 1, turn.

  1. Round 1: Ch 1, sc around the leg opening, sl st to join.
  2. Round 2: Ch 1, BLO sc around, sl st to join.
  3. FO and repeat on the second leg.

Flower Embroidery on Overalls

The front of the overalls has a small yellow flower on the bib and two taller flowers near the lower left side. Use yarn or embroidery thread. Keep the stitches small so the flowers look like appliqué details rather than bulky patches.

  • Small bib flower: Make five yellow straight stitches radiating from one center point. Add one pink stitch or French knot in the center.
  • Lower pink flower: Stitch a green stem about 5 rounds tall. Add two green leaves. Make five pink petal stitches and a yellow center.
  • Lower purple flower: Stitch a second green stem beside the first. Add two purple petals on each side and a yellow center.
  • Placement: Put the flowers on the lower left front of the shorts, just above the leg opening.

Yellow Crossbody Bee Bag

The bee bag is a small yellow purse worn diagonally across the front of the overalls. The bag sits near the monster’s right hip. It has a flap-like front with a round bee applique, light blue wings, black stripes, and a long yellow strap.

Bag Body

Use yellow yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. R1: Ch 10. Sc in second ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side: sc 7, inc in last st. 20 sts.

  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. Sl st and FO.

With black thread, sew three curved stripe lines across the yellow bee body. Add two tiny black stitches for eyes. For wings, make two small light blue circles: 5 sc in MR, sl st to join, FO. Sew one wing on each upper side of the bee.

Bag Strap

Use yellow yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 62.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 61 sc.
  3. FO with long tails.

Sew one strap end to each side of the bag. Place the strap over the doll’s left shoulder and across to the right hip. Tack the strap to the shoulder and side with a few hidden stitches so it stays in the same diagonal position as the photo.

Sunflower Hair Accent

The sunflower sits on the top right side of the head near the base of one eye stalk. It has a brown center and yellow petals. Make it small enough to look like a cheerful garden accessory, not a full hat.

Brown Center

  1. R1: With brown yarn and 2.5 mm hook, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. Sl st to join. Do not fasten off if you want to crochet petals directly onto the center.

Yellow Petals

  1. Join yellow yarn to any stitch of the brown center.
  2. Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, hdc 1, dc 1, sl st into next brown stitch.
  3. Repeat around until you have 18 small petals.
  4. FO, leaving a sewing tail.

Sew the sunflower to the monster’s head slightly right of center, between the two eye stalks but closer to the right eye. Angle it forward so the petals are visible from the front.

Green Spots on Head

The doll has darker green spots on the upper head. Make three small flat circles and sew them to the dome. Use dark green yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. Small spot: 6 sc in MR, sl st to join, FO.
  2. Medium spot: 6 sc in MR, inc around to 12 sts, sl st, FO.
  3. Oval spot: Ch 5, sc in second ch from hook, sc 2, 3 sc in last ch, work on other side, sc 2, inc in last st, sl st, FO.

Sew one spot near the top left of the head, one smaller spot near the upper front, and one oval spot toward the side. Keep them subtle so they do not compete with the eyes and sunflower.

Red Hat Ribbon and Bow

  1. With red yarn, chain 48 for the ribbon band.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. FO.
  3. Wrap around the base of the hat crown and sew at the back.
  4. For bow tails, chain 18 twice. Tie into a small bow and sew to the ribbon band.

Shape the brim flat with your fingers. If needed, dampen lightly and let it dry around a small round object. The finished hat should look like the garden hat shown to the right of the monster.

Small Potted Plant

The tiny plant pot is an accessory beside the doll. It has a terracotta pot, dark soil, and green leaves. Use orange-brown yarn for the pot and dark brown for soil.

Terracotta Pot

  1. R1: With orange-brown yarn, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: BLO sc around. 18 sts.
  5. R5: Sc around. 18 sts.
  6. R6: Sc 2, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  7. R7-R9: Sc around. 24 sts for 3 rounds.
  8. R10: BLO sc around. 24 sts.
  9. R11: Sc around. 24 sts. Sl st and FO.

Soil Disk

  1. R1: With dark brown yarn, 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. FO with a sewing tail.

Stuff the pot lightly, place the soil disk on top, and sew it around the rim. Do not overstuff the pot. A flat top helps the leaves stand neatly.

Leaves

Make seven leaves with green yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. Ch 7.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 1.
  3. Ch 1, work down the other side of the chain: sc 1, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 1.
  4. Sl st at base and FO, leaving a tail.

Sew the leaves into the center of the soil disk. Place three leaves upright in the back, two angled to the sides, and two smaller leaves toward the front. This gives the pot the cute sprouting shape seen in the photo.

Mini Watering Can

The watering can is a small beige prop with a blue rim, handle, and spout. Make it firm and simple so it keeps the rounded can shape beside the doll.

  9. Sew the sunflower to the top of the head near one eye stalk.

For the happiest expression, angle the eye pupils slightly toward the front center. The mouth should sit wide and open, with the upper teeth following the curve of the smile. A few tiny black stitches at the corners of the mouth can make the face look more polished.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and a mild soap. Do not soak the piece if you used buttons, glued details, or non-washable fibers. Gently press with a towel and reshape the eye stalks, flower, and accessories before drying flat.

  • Keep away from rough Velcro or sharp jewelry that can pull stitches.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • If gifting to a young child, embroider the eyes and buttons instead of using hard pieces.
  • Store the hat, pot, and watering can in a small box so they do not get crushed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The eye stalks stand tall and angle slightly outward.
  • The purple eyes are centered on the white eye rings.
  • The wide black mouth is sewn smoothly with no loose edges.
  • The upper teeth are visible and evenly spaced.
  • The blue overalls fit snugly around the lower body.
  • The two front buttons are aligned at the bib corners.
  • The yellow bee bag sits diagonally across the front.
  • The sandals hold the feet flat and show three green toes each.
  • The sunflower, head spots, and small embroidered flowers are secure.
  • The garden hat, potted plant, and watering can are finished as matching props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, clean the doll by dabbing rather than rubbing. Use a soft cloth and a small amount of diluted soap on stained areas. Rinse with a second damp cloth, then press dry with a towel. Keep the eye stalks supported while the piece dries.

If the overalls or bee bag collect dust, use a clean makeup brush or soft toothbrush to lift lint from the stitch texture. Avoid brushing the teeth and mouth too hard because the small sewn details can loosen with repeated friction.

For long-term display, keep the doll out of strong direct sunlight. Bright green, blue, yellow, and red yarn can fade over time. Display the monster on a shelf with the straw hat, watering can, and plant pot arranged around it for the same cheerful garden scene shown in the picture.

Optional Safety Adjustments

  • Replace all buttons with embroidered circles for a child-safe version.
  • Use embroidered black pupils instead of safety eyes.
  • Sew the bee bag permanently to the overalls if the doll will be handled often.
  • Attach the hat to the head only if you do not want it used as a loose prop.
  • Keep the potted plant leaves firmly stitched through the soil disk several times.

Pattern Summary

This Happy Garden Monster Bee Bag Doll is built from a rounded green head-body base, long eye stalks, layered cartoon eyes, a big toothy smile, slim arms, short legs, three-toed feet, brown sandals, and fitted blue overalls. The yellow bee bag, sunflower accent, straw hat, plant pot, and watering can complete the bright garden theme.

Take your time with the face and accessories, because those details create the personality of the doll. When the eyes are upright, the smile is wide, and the tiny garden pieces are arranged beside it, the finished crochet monster will closely match the playful handmade look of the original image.
