This cozy crochet scene features a cream farmhouse cottage with a colorful patchwork quilt roof, brown door, stitched windows, a green lawn base, fence, clothesline, yarn baskets, baby chicks, sunflowers, tea table, egg basket, stepping stones, and a mother hen quilting in a rocking chair. The finished piece is designed as a detailed tabletop crochet diorama with soft cottage charm.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern uses US crochet terms and is written for a firm amigurumi-style finish. Most pieces are worked with a 2.5 mm hook so the stitches stay tight and the stuffing does not show. The cottage is built as a soft rectangular house with flat cream walls and a sloped roof covered in small quilt-style granny squares.
The full scene sits on a rectangular green crochet grass mat. The cottage is placed toward the back center. The hen sits in front of the cottage door on a small rocking chair, holding a patchwork quilt. Around her are chicks, yarn balls, baskets, a tea table, flowers, a fence, a clothesline, a sign, and a basket of eggs.
Finished Size
- Full grass base: about 15 inches wide by 11 inches deep.
- Cottage body: about 8 inches wide, 4 inches deep, and 5 inches tall before roof.
- Finished cottage with roof: about 8.5 inches wide, 4.75 inches deep, and 6.5 inches tall.
- Mother hen: about 3.25 inches tall while seated.
- Baby chicks: about 1.5 inches tall each.
- Patchwork roof squares: about 1.35 inches each after blocking.

Gauge and Stitch Texture
For the cottage walls, 8 sc by 8 rows should measure about 1 inch with the 2.5 mm hook. A tight gauge is important because the cottage needs to stand upright and keep clean edges. The stitches should look compact, like the textured cream walls in the reference image.
For the roof squares, each square should measure about 1.35 inches after a light steam block. If your squares are larger, use a smaller hook. If they are smaller, add one extra sc border round to each square before joining.
Important Construction Notes
- Work the cottage body first as five panels: front wall, back wall, two side walls, and floor.
- The roof is made from two sloped panels. Each roof panel has 3 rows of 5 patchwork squares, for 15 squares per side and 30 squares total.
- The colorful square motifs imitate quilt blocks. Each square has a flower or star center framed by a contrasting background.
- The hen is seated, so her body is slightly oval with small wings resting forward over the quilt.
- Use pins before sewing. The scene has many tiny pieces, and placement matters for the farmhouse look.

- Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. You should have 45 sc. Ch 1, turn.

- Border Rnd 2: Sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in the center stitch of each corner. Sl st to first sc and FO.
Cut a rectangle of plastic canvas or firm felt slightly smaller than the base. Sew or whipstitch it to the underside using green yarn. This keeps the cottage, fence, chair, and props from sagging.

- Join the vertical wall corners with cream yarn, stitching from bottom to top.
- Insert plastic canvas panels inside each wall before closing the last corner fully.

The walls should stand straight with crisp farmhouse corners. Do not overstuff the cottage body. The roof will rest on top and should not be pushed upward by bulky stuffing.

Sew one box under each front window. Add green straight stitches for leaves. Add small French knots in pink, yellow, red, and blue to imitate the little flowers under the windows.
Optional Chimney
The image shows a tall brown chimney rising behind the roof on the left. Use brown yarn.

Stuff the chimney lightly. Sew it to the back left roof area, making sure it stands upright and leans only slightly backward.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
- Sew the cottage to the back center of the green grass base. Place it about 1.5 inches from the rear edge.
- Attach the stone path from the door toward the front right corner.
- Sew the rocking chair in front of the door, slightly to the right of center.
- Sew the mother hen into the chair, then tack the lap quilt to her wings and lower body.
- Place one chick near the yarn ball, one near the quilt, and one closer to the path.
- Sew the fence and clothesline to the left side of the scene.
- Place the yarn baskets near the fence and the loose yarn balls near the chicks.
- Sew the tea table to the right of the hen and add the teapot, cup, and cookie plate on top.
- Attach the sunflowers behind the tea table near the right side wall.
- Place the sign and egg basket at the front right corner.
For facial detailing, embroider small black eyelashes or tiny straight stitches at the outer corner of the hen’s eyes. Add a gentle peach blush with yarn knots or a very light textile-safe blush. Keep the chick faces simple with round eyes and tiny orange beaks.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash because the cottage contains plastic canvas and many small sewn details.
- Keep the roof flat by storing the cottage upright.
- Avoid pulling the loose yarn strands near the quilt, because they are decorative.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The roof has 30 colorful quilt squares arranged in two sloped panels.
- The cream cottage has a centered brown door, two front windows, and one round side window.
- The hen sits in the rocking chair and holds the patchwork lap quilt.
- There are three chicks, yarn baskets, yarn balls, scissors, buttons, and a clothesline.
- The tea table includes a teapot, cup, plate, and cookies.
- The right side has sunflowers, a sign, a small rug, and an egg basket.
- The stone path curves naturally from the door to the front of the grass base.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the cottage gently with a soft brush. Work from the roof downward so lint does not settle into the quilt squares. For small stains, dab the area with cool water and mild soap, then blot dry with a clean towel. Do not rub the embroidered details.
Store the finished farmhouse in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Bright yarn colors like red, yellow, pink, and blue can fade over time if left near a sunny window. To preserve the shape, place tissue paper around the chair, flowers, and clothesline during storage.
Before displaying again, check that the roof corners, chair legs, sign post, and sunflower stems are still secure. If any piece feels loose, use matching yarn and a yarn needle to add two or three hidden stitches at the base.
