Crochet Tutorial: Cricket Daisy Garden Overall Doll – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cheerful crochet cricket doll has a wide brown smiling head, oversized white eyes, green limbs, blue daisy overalls, tan antennae, little sandals, and a sunflower crossbody bag. The garden scene is completed with a straw-style crochet hat, a tiny watering can, and a terracotta flower pot full of daisies, making the finished doll look like a sweet spring gardener.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished cricket doll measures about 12.5 to 14 inches tall when made with sport or light worsted yarn and a 2.25 mm crochet hook. The seated body is about 7 inches from the top of the head to the bottom of the overalls, with long green legs hanging below the table edge just like the reference image.

Skill Level

This pattern is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. Most parts use single crochet worked in continuous rounds. The eyes, overalls, sandals, flowers, bag, and accessories require patient assembly, but each detail is built from simple stitches.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: Sport weight or light worsted cotton yarn works best for crisp amigurumi shaping.
  • Brown yarn: main cricket head.
  • Green yarn: neck, body, arms, legs, and small leaves.
  • White yarn: large eyes and daisy petals.
  • Blue yarn: garden overalls.
  • Tan yarn: straw hat, sandals, antennae, and watering can body.
  • Yellow yarn: daisy centers, sunflower bag, and shoulder strap.
  • Dark brown yarn: sunflower center.
  • Terracotta orange yarn: flower pot.
  • Black yarn or embroidery floss: smile line and side feeler lines.
  • Red yarn or two small red buttons: overall buttons.
  • Safety eyes: two 8 mm or 9 mm black safety eyes for the raised white eyeballs.
  • Hook: 2.25 mm for the doll and accessories.
  • Optional smaller hook: 1.75 mm for flowers and fine details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, scissors.
  • Optional display wire: thin craft wire for bendable antennae or black side feelers. Use only for display pieces, not toys for small children.

Abbreviations Used

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 single crochet in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Fabric Notes

For the smooth rounded look shown in the image, crochet tightly enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches. A firm amigurumi fabric is important because the head is wide and flattened, while the eyes sit high and rounded on top.

Use a smaller hook than the yarn label recommends. If your stitches look loose, change to a smaller hook. If the head becomes too stiff to shape, loosen your tension slightly but keep the stuffing hidden.

Construction Overview

  • The cricket is made from separate amigurumi pieces sewn together.
  • The head is a wide brown oval, shaped with extra rounds through the center to create a long smiling face.
  • The large white eyes are two stuffed domes attached on top of the head.
  • The body is green, then dressed with removable-looking blue overalls sewn over the body.
  • The arms and legs are slim green tubes, matching the long garden cricket style in the image.
  • The sandals, hat, flowers, watering can, flower pot, and sunflower bag are made separately and attached or placed beside the doll.

Important Shaping Notes

The head should be wider than the body, almost like a soft rounded bean. When stuffing the head, push more fiberfill toward the left and right sides and less into the front center. This creates the broad, friendly cricket face seen in the photo.

The eyes should sit close together on the upper front of the head. They are not flat circles. They are stuffed white domes with the black safety eyes placed slightly forward and slightly inward, giving the doll a curious garden-helper expression.

Stuff the head firmly. Flatten the lower edge slightly with your hands so the face looks wide, not round like a ball. Do not close the opening yet if you prefer to sew the neck into this opening. FO with a long tail.

White Eye Domes

Make 2 with white yarn. Insert the black safety eye before finishing each dome. The safety eye should sit between R5 and R6, slightly off center toward the lower inner side of each dome.

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.

  7. R9: Sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  8. R10: Sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.

Insert the safety eye on each dome before stuffing. For the left eye, place the black eye slightly to the lower right. For the right eye, place it slightly to the lower left. This makes both pupils look inward.

Stuff each eye into a firm dome, not a flat disk. FO with a long tail. Sew both eyes to the top front of the brown head, touching or nearly touching at the center. The lower edge of each eye should sit around R12 to R15 of the head.

Neck

Use green yarn. This short cylinder supports the oversized head.

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R10: Sc around. 18 sts for 7 rounds.

Stuff firmly. FO with a long tail. Sew the top of the neck into the lower opening of the head. The neck should sit centered under the face, slightly behind the smile line, so the head tilts forward naturally.

Green Body

Use green yarn. The body is narrow compared with the head and mostly covered by the blue overalls.

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5: Sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.

  10. R18: Sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  11. R19 to R21: Sc around. 24 sts for 3 rounds.

Stuff the body firmly, keeping the bottom rounded and the upper chest narrow. FO with a long tail. Sew the neck to the top center of the body. The head should appear large and charming, with the body sitting directly below it.

Long Green Arms

Make 2 with green yarn. The arms are slim and hang straight down along the overalls.

  1. R1: Make 5 sc in MR. 5 sts.
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 10 sts.
  3. R3 to R26: Sc around. 10 sts for 24 rounds.

Stuff the lower half lightly. Leave the upper half nearly flat so the arms sew smoothly against the sides. FO with a long tail. Sew one arm to each side of the body around R18 of the body, angled slightly downward.

Long Green Legs

Make 2 with green yarn. The legs are long, slim tubes that hang below the blue overalls.

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Sc 1, inc, repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 2, inc, repeat around. 12 sts.
  4. R4 to R34: Sc around. 12 sts for 31 rounds.

Stuff lightly as you go, keeping the legs flexible. Do not overstuff because the doll should sit naturally. FO with a long tail. Sew the legs to the bottom front of the body, spaced about 6 stitches apart.

Blue Overall Shorts

Use blue yarn. The overalls are built as two short legs joined into one garment, then continued upward over the body.

First Overall Leg

  1. R1: Ch 24, join with sl st to form a ring. Make sure the chain is not twisted.
  2. R2: Ch 1, sc in each ch around. Join with sl st. 24 sts.

  5. R21: Sc 6, dec, repeat around. 42 sts.
  6. R22 to R24: Sc around. 42 sts for 3 rounds.

Test the overalls on the body. They should sit high on the green torso and have a relaxed rounded shorts shape. Add or remove one plain round if your body is taller or shorter.

Front Bib

Work the bib in rows on the front center of the overalls.

  1. Row 1: Join blue yarn to the front center. Sc 16 across the front. Ch 1, turn. 16 sts.
  2. Row 2 to Row 8: Sc across. Ch 1, turn. 16 sts.
  3. Row 9: Dec, sc 12, dec. Ch 1, turn. 14 sts.
  4. Row 10: Sc across. FO with a long tail.

Position the bib flat against the green chest. Sew only the lower and side edges so the top edge looks like a raised overall bib.

Overall Straps

Make 2 with blue yarn.

  1. Ch 26.
  2. Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and across. 25 sts.
  3. FO with a long tail.

Sew each strap from the back waist, over the shoulder, to the top corners of the bib. Cross the straps in the back if you want extra stability. On the front, sew one red button at each bib corner.

Red Buttons

Make 2 with red yarn if you do not use real buttons.

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR.
  2. Join with sl st, pull tight, and FO.

Sew one red crochet button to each upper bib corner. Use a tiny black or dark blue stitch across each button to imitate buttonholes.

Small Daisy Appliques for Overalls

Make 5 to 7 small daisies for the overalls. Use yellow for the center and white for the petals.

  1. With yellow, make 6 sc in MR. Join with sl st and FO.
  2. Join white into any stitch.
  3. Ch 3, sl st in second ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st into same yellow stitch.
  4. Repeat one petal in each yellow stitch for 6 petals.
  5. FO and weave in ends.

Sew one daisy to the front bib, two or three to the shorts, and one near each side. Keep them scattered naturally, like tiny garden flowers growing across the blue fabric.

Tan Antennae

Make 2 with tan yarn. For a soft toy, use only yarn. For a display doll, place thin craft wire inside the antennae so they can curve upward.

  1. Ch 18.
  2. Starting in the second ch from hook, sl st in each ch across. 17 sl sts.
  3. FO with a long tail.

For thicker antennae, make a second slip-stitch cord over the same chain by working back along the opposite side. Sew the antennae to the top of the head between the white eye domes. Angle them outward and slightly backward.

Black Smile Line

The cricket’s face has a long, gentle curved smile across the brown head. Use black yarn or embroidery floss.

  1. Thread a yarn needle with black yarn.
  2. Begin at the left cheek around R20 of the head.
  3. Stitch a long shallow curve across the face, ending at the right cheek around the same round.
  4. Use small couching stitches every 5 to 6 stitches to hold the curve in place.

Keep the smile low and wide. It should run beneath the large eyes and stretch almost from cheek to cheek. This wide smile is one of the most important features of the cricket’s expression.

Black Side Feeler Lines

The image shows thin black curved side lines extending from the cheeks. These can be embroidered cords or display wires wrapped in black yarn.

  1. Make 2 black cords by chaining 28 and slip stitching back across each chain.
  2. Sew one cord to the left cheek and one to the right cheek, beginning near the smile ends.
  3. Shape each cord outward, then slightly upward, then inward again.

If using wire, keep the ends fully covered and sewn securely inside the head. Do not use wire if the doll will be handled by young children.

Daisy Ear Flowers Beside the Eyes

Make 2 medium daisies. These sit beside the white eyes near the upper cheeks.

  1. With yellow yarn, make 8 sc in MR. Join with sl st and FO.
  2. Join white yarn into any stitch.
  3. Ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sl st into same yellow stitch.

Sew one daisy to each side of the head near the eyes. Tuck two green leaves behind each daisy. The flowers should look like little garden decorations framing the cricket’s face.

Sandals

Make 2 sandal soles with tan yarn. These fit at the bottom of the long green legs.

  1. Ch 9.
  2. R1: Sc in second ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch. Work along the other side of the chain: sc 6, inc in last st. 18 sts.

  1. Ch 8.
  2. Stretch the chain across the top of the foot and sl st to the opposite side of the sole.
  3. FO and secure the ends inside.

Slide each green foot end into a sandal and sew around the back half of the sole to secure it. Add one tiny white daisy with a yellow center to the outside edge of each sandal strap.

Sunflower Crossbody Bag

The bag is a round yellow sunflower purse with a dark brown center. It hangs across the blue overalls on a yellow strap.

Bag Back Circle

Use yellow yarn.

  5. R4: In each st around, work sl st, ch 3, hdc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st back into the same stitch. Repeat around to make 18 small petals.

Place the sunflower front over the yellow back circle. Sew around the edge, leaving the top 6 stitches open if you want a tiny functional pocket. For a decorative bag, sew all the way around.

Yellow Crossbody Strap

  1. Ch 55.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook and across. 54 sts.
  3. FO with long tails.

Sew one end of the strap to each side of the sunflower bag. Place the strap from the cricket’s left shoulder down to the right hip. Secure the bag lightly to the overalls so it stays in position.

For the little pale blue sprinkler rose shown at the end of the spout, make 6 sc in a magic ring with pale blue or light gray yarn. Sew it to the spout tip.

Terracotta Flower Pot

Use terracotta orange yarn. The pot has a flared rim, dark soil, green stems, and white daisies.

Pot Base

  1. R1: Make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.

Stuff the pot lightly, then sew the soil circle inside the rim. Keep the soil slightly lower than the top edge so the rim looks raised.

Flower Stems

Make 5 stems with green yarn.

  1. Ch 8 to 12 for each stem, varying the height.
  2. Sl st in second ch from hook and across.
  3. FO with long tails.

Sew the stems into the soil. Make 5 small daisies using the same small daisy method from the overalls. Sew one daisy to the top of each stem. Add a few small green leaves near the base.

Extra Tiny Leaves

Use green yarn for small leaves around the hat, flower pot, and side daisies.

  1. Ch 5.
  2. Sc in second ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.
  3. FO with a sewing tail.

Make as many leaves as needed. The reference image uses leaves sparingly, so place them behind flowers rather than covering the daisies.

Attaching the Overalls to the Body

Slide the blue overalls onto the green body before attaching the head if that is easier for you. Pull the legs through the two overall openings, then settle the waistband around the lower torso.

Sew the waistband to the body using small hidden stitches. Sew the bib flat to the chest, then bring the straps over the shoulders. The red buttons should sit high on the front, close to the base of the neck.

The overalls should not look tight. They should have a rounded, handmade garden outfit shape, with the shorts slightly puffed at the sides and the daisies spread across the blue fabric.

Facial Placement Guide

  • Eyes: Sew the white eye domes on the upper front of the brown head, touching at the center.
  • Pupils: Place the black safety eyes slightly inward so the cricket looks cheerful and alert.
  • Smile: Embroider a long black curve across the lower front of the head.
  • Side lines: Add one black curved cord on each cheek, beginning near the ends of the smile.
  • Antennae: Sew the tan antennae between and behind the eyes, curving outward.
  • Side daisies: Sew one daisy beside each eye, with green leaves behind it.

Assembly Order

  1. Make the head, eye domes, body, neck, arms, and legs.
  2. Insert the safety eyes into the white eye domes before closing them.
  3. Sew the white eye domes to the brown head.
  4. Sew the neck to the head and body.
  5. Attach the arms to the body sides.
  6. Attach the legs to the lower body.
  7. Make and fit the blue overalls.
  8. Sew the bib, straps, red buttons, and daisy appliques to the overalls.
  9. Add the smile, side lines, antennae, and head flowers.
  10. Make and attach the sandals.
  11. Make the sunflower bag and sew it across the body.
  12. Make the hat, watering can, and flower pot accessories.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Pin every piece before sewing. This is especially important for the large eyes, because even a small placement change can affect the expression. The eyes should sit high, rounded, and close together.

When the face looks balanced, sew the eyes securely using white yarn. Pass through the base of each eye several times, pulling gently so the domes sit snugly against the head without sinking too deeply.

Embroider the smile after the eyes are attached. Use pins to mark the left cheek, center dip, and right cheek before stitching. The smile should be broad, calm, and slightly curved upward at both ends.

Sew the head flowers last, placing one daisy to the outside of each eye. Add leaves behind them so the white petals stand out against the brown head.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean the doll with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used wire, real buttons, or safety eyes.
  • Let the doll air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the white eye domes and daisies away from dark wet fabric to prevent color transfer.
  • If giving the doll to a child, remove wire and replace small buttons with embroidered circles.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is wide and oval, not perfectly round.
  • The white eyes are large, raised, and close together.
  • The black pupils face slightly inward.
  • The smile is long and curved across the brown face.
  • The green limbs are slim and long.
  • The blue overalls have a front bib, shoulder straps, red buttons, and scattered daisies.
  • The sunflower bag crosses the body diagonally.
  • The sandals have small daisy decorations.
  • The hat, watering can, and potted daisies match the garden theme.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished cricket doll in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Cotton yarn can fade if displayed for long periods in strong light, especially the blue overalls, green limbs, and yellow sunflower bag.

To remove dust, use a soft dry brush and gently brush in the direction of the stitches. Avoid pulling on the antennae, black side lines, flower stems, or sunflower strap because these are delicate decorative parts.

If the doll becomes misshapen, gently reshape it by hand. Press the head from the sides to restore the wide oval shape, fluff the eye domes with your fingers, and straighten the overalls before displaying again.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in clean tissue paper and place it in a breathable box. Do not compress the eyes, hat brim, flower pot stems, or watering can spout. A little open space around the accessories helps preserve the handmade garden scene.
