Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a detailed amigurumi-style project. The doll is worked mostly in continuous rounds, with separate accessories sewn on at the end. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of every round.

The finished doll sits at about 11 to 12 inches tall when made with DK cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. The head and body are soft, rounded, and slightly tapered, while the ears, eyes, muzzle, clothing, shoes, pouch, hat, gloves, and trowel are made separately for a layered garden-doll look.

Skill Level

  • Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • You should know how to work in a magic ring, single crochet in continuous rounds, increase, invisible decrease, change colors, work into front loops and back loops, and sew small parts neatly.

Finished Size

  • Seated height: about 11 to 12 inches.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches.
  • Body height: about 4 inches.
  • Ear length: about 4.25 inches each.
  • Hat width: about 4.5 inches across brim.

Materials

  • DK weight cotton yarn in soft pink for head, body, arms, legs, and toes.
  • DK weight cotton yarn in medium brown for ears, muzzle, sandal soles, trowel handle, and nose shading.
  • DK weight cotton yarn in sky blue for overalls, sandals, hat, pouch, bows, and straps.
  • DK weight cotton yarn in white for eyes, stripes, gloves, hat stripe, and overall stripes.
  • Small amount of red yarn for hearts and button accents.
  • Small amount of black yarn or embroidery thread for whiskers and mouth lines.
  • Two 10 mm black safety eyes for the eye centers.
  • Four small red buttons, or crocheted red buttons if preferred.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for the doll.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for small hearts, buttons, and facial details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scissors.
  • Sewing pins.

Gauge

Gauge is important for the rounded shape and firm amigurumi finish. With DK yarn and a 2.5 mm hook, 8 sc and 8 rounds should measure about 1 inch. If your stitches are loose and stuffing shows through, go down a hook size.

Eye Placement

  • Pin the eyes on the face between head R11 and R23.
  • Leave about 2 pink stitches between the inner edges of the white ovals.
  • The eyes should lean slightly inward at the top.
  • Sew around the white ovals with small stitches, keeping the edges flat.

Brown Muzzle

Nose Shaping on Muzzle

  • With brown yarn doubled, embroider a rounded triangular nose on the front center of the muzzle.
  • Place the top of the nose across muzzle R4 and the bottom point near muzzle R7.
  • Make 8 to 10 horizontal satin stitches, then outline once with small backstitches.
  • Use black yarn to stitch a short vertical mouth line below the nose.

Black Whiskers

Use black embroidery thread or thin black yarn. The whiskers are long, fine, and slightly curved. They come out from both sides of the muzzle area.

  • Cut six strands, each about 6 inches long.
  • Thread one strand through the side of the face beside the muzzle.
  • Make three whiskers on each side, placed around head R25 to R28.
  • Trim each whisker to about 1.75 inches after tying securely inside the head or anchoring with tiny hidden stitches.

Long Brown Floppy Ears

Make two. Use brown yarn. The ears are long, thick, and rounded like soft tubes that flatten slightly. Do not overstuff. Each ear should extend outward from the upper head, then curve gently down.

  1. R1: MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5 to R10: sc around. 24 sts for each round.

  12. R28: sc 3, dec, repeat 3 times. 12 sts.
  13. R29: sc around. 12 sts.

Lightly stuff only the first 20 rounds, leaving the base flatter for sewing. Flatten the final opening and sc through both layers with 6 sc. FO with a long tail.

Ear Placement

  • Pin one ear on each side of the head between R8 and R12.
  • The base of each ear should sit slightly behind the eye line.
  • Angle the ears upward about 20 degrees before curving them outward.
  • Sew the flattened base securely across 6 stitches.
  • Add 2 hidden stitches under each ear to hold the floppy curve.

Arms

Make two using pink yarn. The arms are slim, simple, and hang beside the body. Stuff only the lower half very lightly.

  1. R1: MR, 6 sc. 6 sts.
  2. R2: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 9 sts.
  3. R3 to R6: sc around. 9 sts for each round.
  4. R7: sc 1, dec, repeat around. 6 sts.
  5. R8 to R24: sc around. 6 sts for each round.

Flatten the top and sc through both layers with 3 sc. FO with a long tail. Sew the arms to the sides of the body at body R34 to R36, just below the head. The arms should angle downward and slightly forward.

Legs

  9. R28: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 12 sts.
  10. R29: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 9 sts.

Stuff the leg lightly and the foot firmly. Flatten the top of each leg and sew to the lower front of the body between body R48 and R50. The legs should dangle over the bench edge when the doll sits.

Toe Details

  • Use pink yarn and a yarn needle.
  • On each foot, stitch three vertical toe lines across the front of the foot.
  • Place the lines over foot R23 to R26.
  • Pull gently to create separated toe bumps.

Blue Sandals

Make two soles in blue, then add straps. Use blue yarn for the main sandal and brown yarn for the bottom edge if you want the sole to look thicker.

  2. Sew the muzzle low on the face, adding light stuffing before closing.
  3. Add the embroidered nose and short mouth line.
  4. Add three whiskers on each side, keeping them thin and slightly curved.
  5. Sew ears to the upper sides of the head, angled outward.
  6. Attach the bows at the base of the ears.
  7. Sew arms to the sides below the head.
  8. Sew legs to the lower front body so they hang naturally.
  9. Fit the overalls around the body and secure any loose edges.
  10. Add red buttons, red hearts, pouch, sandals, and toe lines.
  11. Place the hat, gloves, and trowel beside the doll for the complete garden display.

For the most accurate look, pin every piece before sewing. Check the doll from the front, side, and top. The face should look tall and expressive, the ears should be long and floppy, and the blue accessories should balance the pink body.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Do not soak if safety eyes, buttons, or embroidered details are attached.
  • Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
  • Keep the whiskers flat while drying so they do not curl too tightly.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Large white oval eyes are even and securely sewn.
  • Brown muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • Three whiskers are placed on each side.
  • Both brown ears are attached at the same height.
  • Blue bows sit near the ear bases.
  • Overalls show blue-and-white stripes with small red hearts.
  • Red buttons are attached to the front straps.
  • Crossbody pouch hangs across the chest.
  • Sandals show visible pink toes and red heart accents.
  • Hat, gloves, and trowel are finished as separate garden props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the doll away from direct sunlight to keep the pink, blue, red, and brown yarn colors bright. If displaying on a shelf, place it where the long ears and whiskers will not be pressed against other objects.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the ears, muzzle, bows, pouch, or hat brim. Check the red buttons and small hearts occasionally and restitch them if they loosen.

If the doll is made for a child, replace hard buttons with embroidered circles and make sure all small parts are sewn securely. For display pieces, the tiny props can remain separate so the full garden scene can be arranged just like the photo.
