This crochet scene creates a rounded green farm base with a blue pond, pebble border, raised vegetable beds, a curved footbridge, tiny quails, lantern posts, flowers, mushrooms, a garden bench, trellis vines, tools, baskets, and a round cabbage cottage with a cream wall, brown door, window details, and layered cabbage leaves forming the roof.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size and Skill Level
This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished display measures about 18 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 12 inches tall when made with worsted weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. The cottage is about 7 inches wide and 8 inches tall including the cabbage roof.
- Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
- Main techniques: Single crochet, increases, decreases, working in back loops, surface crochet, flat panels, embroidery, and simple joining.
- Construction style: The base, pond, cottage, bridge, garden beds, quails, vegetables, leaves, and accessories are made separately, then sewn together.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn in grass green, pond blue, cream, light cabbage green, medium cabbage green, dark cabbage green, brown, tan, gray, white, yellow, orange, beet red, carrot orange, purple, black, red, and small amounts of other garden colors.
- 3.25 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
- 2.75 mm crochet hook for tiny vegetables, flowers, and facial details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Yarn needle.
- Stitch markers.
- Scissors.
- Optional cardboard, plastic canvas, or foam board for stiffening the base, bridge, cottage wall, shed wall, and sign.
- Optional 6 mm black safety eyes for quails, or black yarn embroidery.

Gauge Notes
Exact gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important because this is a display piece with many stuffed shapes. With worsted yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, 6 sc by 6 rows should measure about 1 inch. Use a smaller hook if stuffing shows through.
For a firm diorama, crochet tightly and stuff the cottage, stones, quails, vegetables, and mushrooms only enough to hold shape. Overstuffing small pieces can make the scene uneven and harder to assemble neatly.
Base Mat
The base is a rounded rectangle of grass green crochet. It should look like a soft farm lawn with slightly rounded corners, thick enough to support the pond, cottage, garden beds, and bridge.
Green Rounded Rectangle Base
- With grass green and 3.25 mm hook, ch 61.
- Rnd 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 59, 3 sc in last ch. Working on the opposite side of the chain, sc 58, 2 sc in first ch. Join with sl st to first sc. 122 sts.

Make a second identical base panel if you want a thicker mat. Insert cardboard or plastic canvas between the two panels, then sc through both layers around the edge using grass green. Place 3 sc at each rounded corner to keep the shape flat.
Surface Grass Lines
- Using a yarn needle and darker green yarn, embroider 12 to 16 long running-stitch rows across the mat from side to side.
- Keep the lines slightly uneven so the base looks like a handmade crocheted lawn.
- Leave the front center open for the bridge and pond area.
Blue Pond
The pond is an oval blue shape placed at the front half of the base. It has a rounded pebble border, lily pads, fish, cattails, water lilies, ducklings, and a footbridge crossing the middle.
Pond Oval

Pin the pond to the front half of the base. The long side should sit horizontally, with enough room behind it for the cottage and enough room on the left for the vegetable garden. Sew around the pond edge using small whipstitches.

Cottage Placement
Place the cabbage cottage on the back right area of the green base. It should sit behind the bridge and pond, with the door facing forward. The garden bed should stay to the left, and the wood shed should sit on the right side.
- Pin the cottage to the base before sewing.
- Check that the front door lines up with the stepping stones and bridge.
- Sew around the cottage bottom using cream yarn and small hidden stitches.
- Add extra stitches through the back of the cottage into the base if the roof feels heavy.
Main Layout Guide
- Back right: Cabbage cottage, shed, logs, tools, crate, and side window.
- Back left: Trellis, garden table, and dark soil vegetable bed.
- Front center: Blue pond, arched bridge, lantern posts, fish, lilies, and ducklings.
- Front left: Farm sign, bench, flowers, and garden fence.
- Front right: Picnic mat, basket, rolled blanket, stones, and pond plants.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all large pieces are sewn down, add the tiny pieces last. This prevents the small vegetables, flowers, and animals from being hidden under the bridge, cottage, or garden bed. Work from back to front for the cleanest finish.
- Sew the cottage first, then the pond, garden bed, bridge, shed, crate, and trellis.
- Add pebbles around the pond after the bridge is attached.
- Sew quails in place with several stitches through the bottom of each body.
- Embroider quail eyes, cheek stripes, and beaks after positioning them.
- Add flowers, mushrooms, tools, and vegetables wherever the scene needs more color.
For the quail faces, use tiny stitches and avoid pulling too tightly. A small downward beak and slightly curved cheek stripe will make each bird look gentle and handmade. For the cottage windows, keep the embroidered crossbars centered and even.
Care Notes
- Keep this crochet cottage as a display piece rather than a toy for very young children.
- Avoid soaking the full diorama because cardboard or plastic canvas inside may bend.
- Use a lint roller or soft brush to remove dust from the cabbage leaves and pond details.
- If a small vegetable or flower loosens, sew it back with matching yarn and a yarn needle.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The cottage door faces the bridge and pond.
- The cabbage roof has dark outer leaves, medium side leaves, and a pale top leaf.
- The garden bed includes carrots, cabbages, onions, beets, and leafy sprouts.
- The pond has pebbles, lily pads, fish, cattails, ducklings, and water flowers.
- The bridge is slightly arched and has visible plank lines.
- The quails have eyes, beaks, wings, feet, and small accessories.
- The sign reads Pond Cabbage Farm or has stitched lines suggesting text.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the shape, store the finished piece on a flat shelf away from direct sunlight. Long exposure to strong light can fade green, blue, and red yarn over time. If storing in a box, place tissue paper around the cabbage leaves and bridge.
For dust cleaning, use a cool hair dryer on the lowest setting from at least 12 inches away. Hold the cottage roof gently while cleaning so the cabbage leaves do not bend. Spot clean only with a barely damp cloth and let the piece air dry fully.
Check the pond pebbles, lanterns, quails, and tiny vegetables every few months. Because these pieces are small and raised, they may loosen with handling. A few hidden stitches with matching yarn will keep the display secure and beautiful.
