Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. This pattern uses basic amigurumi shaping, flat panels, simple embroidery, color changes, surface crochet, and sewing. Most pieces are worked in continuous rounds unless a row is clearly stated.

Finished Size

  • Farm base: about 18 in wide x 24 in long.
  • Barn: about 7 in wide x 6 in deep x 7 in tall.
  • Silo: about 2.5 in wide x 6.5 in tall.
  • Tractor: about 4.5 in long.
  • Farmer doll: about 4.5 in tall.
  • Animals: about 1.5 to 3 in long, depending on animal.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or acrylic yarn in grass green, dark green, red, cream, brown, tan, beige, black, white, pink, orange, yellow, blue, gray, and small amounts of red and gold.
  • US G/4.0 mm hook for the base, barn panels, roof, and large flat pieces.
  • US E/3.5 mm hook for animals, farmer, tractor, vegetables, and small accessories.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Cardboard or plastic canvas for optional barn and base support.

  • Scissors and pins.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • st = stitch
  • sts = stitches
  • FO = fasten off

Important Pattern Notes

Use tight stitches so stuffing does not show. The image has a neat amigurumi texture with compact stitches, so use a smaller hook for stuffed pieces. The base and roof need a slightly softer drape, so the 4.0 mm hook works well there.

The barn is built from separate red panels with white trim sewn on top. The cream roof is a long ribbed rectangle that bends over the barn like a rounded arch. The silo is a tall cylinder with a pale dome cap and red lower wall.

The farm mat is worked as one large green rectangle, then paths, garden beds, pond, fences, barn, animals, and accessories are sewn on. For a sturdier display, place plastic canvas inside the barn and under the base before the final border.

Gauge

  • With 4.0 mm hook: 16 sc x 18 rows = 4 in square.
  • With 3.5 mm hook: 18 sc x 20 rounds = 4 in.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Place all large pieces before sewing. The barn sits at the back center, the silo attaches to the left side of the barn, the pond sits in the front left area, and the garden beds sit at the front right. Keep the tan path open through the middle.

  • Sew the barn firmly through the floor edge so it does not wobble.
  • Sew the silo to both the base and the barn side.
  • Sew fences after placing animals so the pasture openings look natural.
  • Sew the tractor beside the farmer near the front path.
  • Add black embroidered eyes to animals with small straight stitches.
  • Add tiny smiles using one short curved stitch where appropriate.
  • Use pink yarn to add cheeks to pigs and the farmer.
  • Hide all knots inside the pieces whenever possible.

Care Notes

Spot clean the farm set with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used cardboard inside the barn or base. If the set is made entirely with washable yarn and plastic canvas, hand wash gently and air dry flat.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Barn roof is centered and curved evenly.
  • Door trim forms clear white X shapes.
  • Silo stands straight beside the barn.
  • Paths meet cleanly at the center.
  • Garden beds are sewn flat with vegetables attached securely.
  • All animals have eyes, ears, legs, and tails.
  • Fence rails are sewn at two heights between posts.
  • Loose yarn ends are woven in and hidden.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the play set flat in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade red, green, and orange yarn over time. Keep the barn roof lightly shaped by placing tissue inside the arch when storing for a long period.

For dust removal, use a soft brush or a lint roller with gentle pressure. Do not pull at surface crochet details, fruit knots, fence rails, or vegetable leaves. If a small piece loosens, resew it with matching yarn and a blunt yarn needle.

If gifting this farmstead to a child, check every sewn detail before use. Replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes for children under three years old. The finished piece is best as a decorative soft play scene, quiet-time toy, or handmade nursery display.
